My husband Ricardo and I share a special affection for this massive dinosaur of a building. (Now renamed "The Dinkins") A retired merchant seaman, Ric came to NY after Hurricane Katrina in September of 2005. I was teaching ESL at a place on Union Square. Our paths crossed and, we became friends. I have the honor today be Ric's wife. We married June 24, 2008 at Centre Street, near City Hall. My neighbor's daughter, only four at the time, bragged to her mother that we 'got married in the hallway!!" I never bothered to correct her ; I like her version of things. We planned to get hitched on a Monday, but were told 'it's a madhouse, same as Friday," so we went instead on Tuesday - with Ms. Blanca Martinez officiating. You simply must visit the Marriage License Bureau to get a full sense of it. Among other sights we saw: an overweight bride to be with a crooked tiara, wearing a white prom dress, complaining with colorful expletives... her feet hurt, like some x-rated Pearl Bailey. I've often thought it would make a terrific New Yorker piece, or a documentary. A slice of Big Apple history which still continues to endure, thriving even among the latest crop of cynics. Take a tour soon as you can, and savor that old marble, glassworks, brass and....spirit!
