De Mondion

"The luxurious Xara Palace Hotel is set in a 16C building in the heart of the beautiful walled city of Mdina where, on the top floor, you’ll find this intimate, elegantly dressed restaurant featuring impressive artwork from around the island. If you’re here in the summer, a table on the terrace is a must, thanks to the stunning views extending across the east of the island to the coast. The cooking is technically adept and the combinations are well-judged, with menus showcasing the best of the island’s produce in sophisticated, classically based Mediterranean dishes – Scottona beef fillet is a speciality. Herbs and vegetables are sourced from the restaurant’s own garden which is cultivated sustainably in accordance with the principles of regenerative agriculture. The impressive wine list offers a broad choice with some great quality vintages – it’s worth asking the sommelier for recommendations from their selection of local wines. Despite the hotel’s sumptuous style, service remains friendly and not overly formal." - Michelin Inspector

The food was exquisite. The Chef brought an interesting twist in every dish. The balance between the acidity, bitterness and sweetness of each dish was well kept. I would recommend the foie gras and octopus for starters, followed by the beef for the main. The service was excellent and we were well looked after.

1 star Michelin Lunch for 75€/pers Very good selection of Malta’s wines by the glass Top notch service (at the level expected for a Relais Châteaux) The food was very conforting (unusual in gastronomic cuisine) you can feel the love and the chef’s « gourmandise » in every bites. Everything was excellent and toped with a great view. We are even thinking about coming back before the end of our holidays to ré-experience everything again. 300€ in total for 2 with 5 glasses of wine, 1 glass of top whiskey, 3 espressos, 2 glasses of non alcoholic wine and 1 sparkling water (it could have costed 100€ more and we would have still though it was worth it).

We've returned to De Mondion several times over the past years, drawn back by its breathtaking setting in Mdina. The restaurant offers spectacular views over Malta's countryside and coastline, and is particularly enchanting in winter when the wood fireplace adds extra warmth to the atmosphere. The standout during our lunch last week definitely was the service team, particularly our main waitress and the exceptional sommelier. Her deep knowledge of both international and local wines, including Malta's vineyards, led to perfect pairings throughout our meal. Our lunch started promisingly with a delicious gazpacho and excellent bread selection - the sourdough and their olive oil were particularly memorable. It's nice knowing they source some ingredients from their own garden. While the foie gras starter with beetroot impressed, the risotto, though good, was oversized and not our favourite. Our mains - the Foraged Mushroom with 'Baħrija' Onion and Brioche, and the snapper with leek, basil, and onion vinaigrette (topped with Sturia caviar) - unfortunately fell short. The mushroom dish lacked harmony, with bland portobello and uncomfortable pastry texture, while the generous portion of snapper was visually uninspiring and rather neutral in taste. The cheese selection for dessert was fine but unremarkable, though the homemade prickly pear jam was a lovely touch. One note on service - while attentive, the practice of refolding napkins during absences feels outdated and perhaps unsanitary. Despite some disappointments with the dishes, De Mondion's exceptional wine program and the sommelier's expertise continue to impress. While the food might not have met our expectations, the stunning location and professional service make for a memorable evening out.

What an experience. Recommend the 7 course sample menu. The staff was exceptional. I'm not a wine drinker, but the single Malt pour was good for Malta. The executive chef served me the last dessert dish, way cool!!! Worth every penny.

This place is a whole vibe. My boyfriend took me here for my birthday (August 2024) and the food, service and view are just incredible. All of the staff were so friendly and knowledgeable and took care to explain every dish to us. The sommelier was brilliant and helped us pick some truly incredible wine to go with our meal (I’m obsessed with buttery wine because of this man). I should talk more about the food, though, because every dish was so unique and tasty. They bring you these tiny bites to try for free between courses and each one was mind blowing, especially the little ball-things in the nest (I forgot what they were but you’ll know when you try them). You can literally see the garden on the hill where they grow the ingredients locally and my boyfriend was obsessed with the basil gazpacho. The hotel was giving strong white lotus vibes and the location in Medina’s old town was unforgettable. They even bought me a special card and birthday dish at the end which made the day really special. If the restaurant read this, thank you so much to everyone involved in this experience - I would give you guys 10 Michelin starts if it was up to me!

De Mondion is an extraordinary culinary gem perched atop the luxurious Hotel Xara Collection, offering not just a meal but a true gastronomic experience. Under the expert guidance of Executive Chef Clint, each dish is a testament to his dedication to sustainability, seasonality, and the vibrant flavors of the Maltese Islands. Collaborating closely with the in-house Xara Gardens team, as well as local farmers and artisans, Chef Clint ensures that every ingredient used is of the highest quality. Our evening began with an array of Chef’s innovative starters, each more exquisite than the last. We were served a variety of freshly baked breads, including a superb gluten-free option, accompanied by savory, melting butter that set the tone for the feast to follow. The Gazpacho Soup with Tuna Tartare was a refreshing and perfectly balanced introduction, showcasing the finesse and creativity of the kitchen. Each dish was presented with a detailed explanation by the attentive and polite staff, enhancing our appreciation of the culinary artistry at play. For the main course, we delighted in the local red bream and the Scottona Beef Fillet. Both dishes were cooked to perfection, highlighting the freshness of the local produce and the skillful techniques of the chef. The flavors were both bold and harmonious, leaving a lasting impression on our palates. To conclude this exceptional meal, we indulged in five types of artisanal cheese, each offering a unique taste and texture that rounded off our dining experience beautifully. Even after the cheese plate, they brought complimentary little sweets to try. Every aspect of our evening at De Mondion exceeded our expectations. From the impeccable service to the breathtaking views of Malta, it was an unforgettable night. This restaurant truly embodies the essence of fine dining and is a must-visit for anyone seeking an unparalleled culinary adventure. We picked a 2015 Muscadet Wine from Loire Valley to accompany our meal. It was a great value option for White Dry Wine lovers. Overall score 4.8/5 for a Fine Dining Restaurant

The tasting menu is a must! We enjoyed every dish, but the agnolotti and the tuna were a highlight. The staff were attentive and great the whole night. The sommelier did an amazing job selecting a bottle of wine for us based on our tastes and offered great suggestions for things to do in the area.

This place is amazing! The food was top quality, super delicious and well presented. The service was fabulous: our waiter was very kind, friendly and attentive. We celebrated our son’s 18th birthday, and they made it very special for us and we are grateful for great experience. All staff we encountered was very smiley and we loved that. The food price I’d say was reasonable. Elegant restaurant with excellent food and friendly staff!
