The Best Restaurants With Views in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Open seasonally from approximately early May to the end of September, this easygoing restaurant at McCuddy’s Marina in Northeast Portland floats right on the waters of the Columbia River. The sunny outdoor patio is the best place to snack on seafood, sandwiches, burgers, and other casual fare while boat-watching. The cocktails are also fun, especially the Shark Bite, which comes with a grenadine-filled toy shark to submerge in blue curacao a la Jaws." - Zoe Baillargeon

The Deck is THE Columbia River glow-up spot—sun on your face, cocktail in your hand, and vibes so good you’ll swear you’re on vacation. We came, we sipped, we conquered the menu—and let me tell you, the vibes were as crisp as that Columbia River breeze. The staff knows how to keep the good times flowing, and the whole experience screams “you deserve this.” Pro tip: snag an outdoor seat, order a margarita (or two, we don’t judge), and live your main character fantasy while the boats drift by. This place? Chef’s kiss. 💋🍹🌅

Google
Hands down a great spot on the river. The food was amazing. Drake took great care of us , we had a fun conversation with him throughout the evening. Next time we are in Portland we will be back.

Google
What an excellent place to finish the work week. The service is on point. Thank you Drake! The drinks are absolutely delicious and the food is equally delicious. So nice to unwind after a busy week. I plan on trying almost everything on the menu. It's that good. We had the watermelon margaritas and some appetizers. Perfectly perfect.

Google
Perfect place for lunch or dinner in the sunny weather. They are located right on the water, so the view is awesome. Our waitress Laura was great! She was friendly, she took our other in a timely manner, and the food was fantastic!! It's outdoor seating that's covered, so you get the fresh air and sunshine without getting too hot from the direct sunlight. However, if you like the direct sunlight, they also have seating without the cover with umbrellas. The restaurant was very clean and they played music (not too loud). I will definitely be adding The Deck to my fave list when they are open for business.

Google
The food is tasty, but the new menu is much pricier than before. Wonderful staff and a world class view make it a noteworthy stop.

Michael De Pinto

Google
Unique spot right on the water. Excellent drinks and food!

Scott Carroll

Google
Hey, you're on the water, the wait staff is a happy bunch, the food is excellent and well above the price point, and on a sunny day you will feel like you're in the Bahamas.

Kelli

Google
It is a bit of a walk cuz it's down literally on the river but so worth it. The servers were super nice. The food was so good. The French fries had a hint of lime so be prepared for that. The cheese burger was so juicy and I could add pineapple which I love. We also had the calmari and it was fantastic. The fish was fresh warm and crispy. Can't wait to try it again.

Yelp
Enjoyed sitting on the floating patio. Beautiful Portland sunset. Restaurant closes a bit early. They didn't rush us out, but definitely felt we should finish and go. Food was good, but temper expectations. It's on par with pub fare.

Yelp
Came here for the views and sea food We got fish and chips and halibut fish tacos. The fish tacos didn't taste fresh and didn't have a good crunch to them. Also the sauce was lacking so they didn't have much flavor either. The fish and chips were definitely better and they came with good tartar sauce. There's plenty of parking but you have to walk a lot to get to the restaurant. The view is nice, you are literally on a deck on top of the water and there wasn't a lot of people at all & we went on a weekend, the service was slow but the waitress we got was very friendly. In my opinion the prices are too high for the quality of food they provide Would maybe come back just for the views

Yelp
Food was gross a taco is more like a salad that birds eat. Obviously they have never eaten real authentic Mexican food. The service was horrible had better service at McDonald's than this place. If you're a hipster then you will fit right in. I got ignored the whole time I was there should have asked for a refund. The only waitress barely wearing anything just looks at me and dismissed me .Good lord people save your money and your insanity. The only good thing was the music. That was enjoyable. Until that little twitt asked me to move if they have a crowd. Wow could you be more abovioyse you don't like bigger people. Anyone who ant a size two. Never again will I ever come back here unless I am a glutton for punishment no thanks.

Maribeth A.

Yelp
The Deck is a relaxing place to eat. Service is wonderful. Food is great & fairly priced! I just wish they'd service a better red wine. Then the Deck would be awesome!

Julie L.

Yelp
The food is good and reasonably priced. The wait staff is great. The only negative is the red wine choice. They need a better cab or a red blend. Please.

Yelp
The Deck is a bit like the Island Cafe's kissing cousin, situated a little further upriver along the Columbia in McCuddy's Marina off Marine Drive, and a little more obscure: it's very easy to overlook. Hell, I did for years, until this last weekend! It has its own set of advantages: closer to home (for us), less crowded. It's a little less photogenic, and a little rougher around the edges in some places, but still a wonderful spot to enjoy some casual lunch fare and cocktails on a warm, sunny afternoon! We ordered the Deck Burger for myself: a sort of French Dip/burger hybrid, complete with au jus; the Chapman Bleu for my wife: a cod fish sandwich boasting bleu cheese dressing and crumbles instead of tartar sauce; a Tokyo Tea for myself, and a Peaches and Tea for the lady. Both of us subbed out our included French Fries for one of the pasta salads on the appetizer menu: the Pesto Tortellini and the Sundried Tomato Penne, respectfully (the latter, without a doubt, is the *exact* same pasta you can buy from Gartner's deli on Killingsworth, FYI, and absolutely worth your money!). The Deck Burger seemed a little plain: could have used more caramelized onions and maybe some other accoutrement, IMO, but it was still pretty tasty, properly cooked, and the au jus a well-executed staple. My wife's Chapman Bleu, on the other hand, left me envious: she was utterly in love with it, savoring each and every bite: the bleu cheese complementing the deep-fried cod filet surprisingly well! Both of us would be hard-pressed to order anything else on the menu, upon a return visit. Cocktails were light and refreshing, and sizeable for the price. The Tokyo Tea, being basically a Long Island Iced Tea with Midori (I think?) was light and refreshing, and the Peaches and Tea was exactly as advertised: peach iced tea with a punch. Service was friendly and reasonably competent, even if most of the servers working seemed to be slightly-green high school aged kids working a summer job: no complaints about attentiveness or accuracy. The river views here are almost incomparable for any restaurant on the Columbia within city limits on either side, and a gentle wake from passing ships keeps things lively, at least for those resilient to sea-sickness (it's really not bad at all!). As I grow older, I've begun to realize that I am particularly partial to ships, docks, harbors, marinas...anything nautical by nature, as well as any restaurants that occupy said spaces or embrace said themes (Dad-mode fully engaged, I guess?!). Maybe I was a sailor in a previous life; certainly not this one, which is something I regret. Even so, despite my lack of sea-faring experience, on any sunny summer afternoon or evening, there's a decent chance you find me standing (well, sitting) on The Deck.

Yelp
Lovely view, lovely vibes. Great place to sit and eat along the Columbia river and frequently do not have a wait like the Island cafe. The price to portion size is good and the drinks are great. Last time we were there we ordered the shrimp cocktail salad and the fish and chips. Love the battered fish, great fries, and the salad was good but i did not like all the little shrimps. This seemed like it was the canned shrimps.

Yelp
The environment was really relaxed. I didn't know this place existed. It's tucked away on the marina just past salties. Once you park there is a little walk to the restaurant. It's like your going to get on one of the boats. The walk down is steep so be careful. Once we arrive we were asked if we wanted to sit outside on the floating deck or inside. We chose outside. At the time there was only uncovered seating available which meant lots of sunshine. We took it. Later another table opened up with an umbrella so we took. Perfect it's hot today so shade was important. While waiting to order you can enjoy the view. You are literally on the water. Duck floating by hoping a bread crumb or two will drop. There is signage that say no feeding the wildlife. They may become aggressive. Noted!!! Also we had several plains fly overhead including four fighter Jets that were incredibly loud. For me it made the environment considering it's up the road from the Portland International Airport. We orders fish and chips and clam chowder. The fish was perfectly battered and flaky. Not greasy at all. They were perfect and super delicious. It was served with fries and coleslaw. The coleslaw was ok I've had better and the fries were fries. Very good dish. The chowder was very tasty and very smoky tasting. For me it was like they had cooked it with some smoked brisket. Perhaps the bacon they used in the chowder had a smoke on it. The dish was full of clam pieces, potatoes and veggies. It was amazing. I tipped the meal off with an average tasting Arnold Palmer . Overall a great meal and a fun place to eat.

Yelp
Beautiful Columbia River views! This was a fun place to have an early dinner. The food was pretty good - standard fare. But I gotta admit, the drinks were WEAK! We had a Cadillac Margarita and the Deck's version of a Long Island Iced Tea. Both sucked. We will be back though as the service was ok and the atmos was fun and casual.

Yelp
Wow the deck has been in decli e the last few seasons. This season not worth the venture. Everything was saturated in grease. Grease literally poured out of the chicken quesadia. Gross..the service is fair, the views have lost luster with the construction barges tied up right next to it. Honestly try Island Cafe or Puffin Cafe.

Katherine B.

Yelp
Went here for dinner on a hot July night, sat outside with a beautiful view of the river framed by hills. Cooling breezes, excellent service and delicious food that arrived quickly made this a memorable place to spend the evening and watch the sunset.

Yelp
Cool experience! Perfect spot to hang out when it's sunny in Portland. The food was fresh and perfectly seasoned. The beer and cocktail were excellent. The staff that helped our family were so nice and polite.
google avatar

Yelp
Food good and delicious..drinks great and different fun choices. Have to wait a short time but worth it. Right on the water shack feeling so much fun. Servers are friendly and helpful.Enjoy!!! Sue Love to take out of town visitors to experience the views or to see a small boat hook up to their decks to come in for a bite to eat.

Yelp
As a local, this is our spot. But keep it on the down low ;) this place is the best. Feels like a vacation to the tropics.
google avatar

Doris W.

Yelp
My friends live really close to this place. They suggested to meet here to grab a meal that was in between lunch and dinner on a Sunday afternoon. You have to park up top and walk down a pretty steep ramp. We had a table next to the water, it was great for duck, fish, and geese watching! We ordered: - fish and cheese curds - steamed clams - calamari Our waitress was great! This place is dog friendly, and our waitress even brought out an ice bucket of water for our dog. My clams were just ok, not amazing flavor or anything, but big portion. The cheese curds were delicious. The fish was pretty good, no complaints there. Cody said the calamari were the best hes had! Fried perfectly. Honestly you can't beat the location of this place. I didnt even feel like I was in PDX! Great spot to visit on a sunny day in the summer.
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
Great view. Outdoor seating, but birds are a nuisance and we had to move to another table to get away from them. Beer on tap. 1/2 bay shrimp cocktail (happy hour menu ) was huge and fresh. Steamer clams tasty but needed to be washed better as some had sand grit. Service was excellent. Be prepared for a long walk down and up a steep ramp to get to and from the restaurant.
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
Great view and service, but the food was just above average. Your experiences may vary.
google avatar

Junee F.

Yelp
What a fun experience. The service was good, the food delicious, and the fresh air just made it that much better.

Tabitha W.

Yelp
Such a fun dining experience. Nothing like sitting on the water (literally ON the water) and drinking a fun tropical drink. The food is good, maybe not outstanding, but quite good and the vibes make up for it. been here twice and can't wait to come back
google avatar

Eric K.

Yelp
Great spot during or after a day on the Columbia! If you're pulling your boat up, watch out for the shallow areas near the dock entrance.
google avatar

Hayden P.

Yelp
Very cool place. Great food, service, and atmosphere. Pretty neat that you can grab lunch and then take your drinks to the chairs out front to lounge with a dock view. No better place to wait for a flight out of PDX.
google avatar

Jack J.

Yelp
This is the spot to be. Hidden gem in Portland with an amazing ambiance right on the river

Yelp
My husband and I came here for a friend's birthday. The food was mediocre. We sat for at least 35 mins before anyone acknowledged us. When we went to tell our friend goodbye, the waiter ask if we had paid for our meal that was already paid for with another server. that was embarrassing for the waiter to ask us that. He could have simply checked with the other staff to see if we had paid for our meal. Before embarrassing us in front of other customers. I will never return to this restaurant.

Suzan K.

Yelp
Cute restaurant on the water. Great menu selection. Love that dogs are welcome. Our server Owen was fantastic. Great atmosphere. Wanted to give a 5 but dropped to a 4 because it took way to long...30 mins? to get our food and the chips...lol obviously they served us the crumbs from the bottom of the bag would I come here again? Absolutely.
google avatar

Ron M.

Yelp
Just had a fantastic meal with seven of us on the water at The Deck. We always love coming here, but today we had the privilege of being served by Reagan. It was very busy but Reagan was prompt and attentive to everything. The food was hot and delicious as always. Highly recommend this place for the ambiance (outdoor dining on the water), good food, and today the fabulous service.
google avatar

Tj R.

Yelp
Waited an hour to get our food. We arrived at 11:45am and placed our order. 15 minutes later a river tour boat arrived and filled up the restaurant. They were served their food almost immediately. If the server had informed us of the wait we would have gone somewhere else as we had 2 children with us that were very hungry. Note: We will now call ahead to make sure there are no tour boats coming in.
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
The food was great, the service was fantastic and you can't beat the views on a sunny day!
google avatar

Craig T.

Yelp
We really enjoyed the fish and chips while we watched logs float down the Columbia river. Our waiter was brand new and kept forgetting forks, but he was very nice and he will do well when he learns the job. We got the fish and chips with us. Some of the best we've had for a while, but have only eaten here one time
google avatar

Jeannine D.

Yelp
Location, location, location! Love this spot, right on the water. Usually tend to get a table on the back deck with great views. This visit we had the fish and chips and teriyaki salmon tacos. Both were yummy.
google avatar

Eric J.

Yelp
It's on the water. That's it. Service is very vary slow. Food is basic bar food. Did I say the service is slow. 20mins for someone to stop and greet us after the host sat us. Then the food took close to an hour.
google avatar

Steve C.

Yelp
Managed to get three meals the 5 pack of coronitas and another adult drink. Bit on the pricey side. I'm sure it was cheaper before everybody raised their prices cuz of this inflation crap. Got some cool pictures of water life. I got the coconut shrimp which were really good. They are not shy with their fries. Definitely a cool little spot to check out if you've never been there. Eating on the water is always kind of fun. Menus kind of basic nothing to get excited about there but we all enjoyed our food so overall a pretty fun experience
google avatar

Kathryn B.

Yelp
On the water with ferns & flowers growing wherever the f they want. Scenic with carp, native blackbirds (i think), & blue herons standing stoic. Not a big fan of the entrees here but such good vibes. Cute spot, cute staff, cute birds & great experience. 100% recommend. Food tip: My dad likes the fish tacos here. I like their fries. A lot.

Yelp
I usually don't read what others are saying, before I do my reviews! The first ones I scrolled, were giving them 3 stars, then I started reading current 2021 reviews with 4-5 stars! Like: New Management, (? who knows), because when we went there, it was for sure a 4-stars! I'd give them 5 stars, if it was a 5 star environment (it can easily have been, the location alone gives that a 5 star)!!! People didn't even know 'dogs were allowed', and my grand-dog got plenty of attention! Nobody gave him a bad look. We also stayed longer, while the parents took him for a walk and a photo-op at the dock. The food? Everyone's happy with what they ordered! When you're at the marina, in a pleasant sunny day like today, EVERYONE wants to eat seafood! And coleslaw! And fries! The service: Being a hot day, wind made it pleasant, I was still thirsty, and no one offered us more water, there are plenty of tables, but I understand in the hospitality industry, they need those tables! My son, carries ice water with him (dog, too gets thirsty), and he offered me some! We stayed longer than we should, and no one kicked us out! Next? Perfect day for ICE CREAM! Today: Is Grandparents & Elderly Day, and today was MY DAY & Rowan's Day, my new grand-dog! What more do I want? BTW: This is my first visit here, but hubby have been here before, with his boating buddies! NOTE: If you're old and have problem climbing up a hill, that's a mighty tall ramp back up to the parking lot. I'm old and I'd say I'm in good shape, but that ramp was OK for me.
google avatar

Kevin W.

Yelp
The only reason I came to this place is because it was a part of my jet boat tour. This place wasn't bad but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here either. This restaurant is floating on the water and has limited options. We arrived by jet boat so I didn't even see the parking lot. They have one bathroom stall attached to the venue but you can walk to another building that has two additional stalls. I got the chicken sandwich here. Decent. Didn't leave an impression. Fighter jets flew above us during our visit. Take it or leave it.

Yelp
The location of this restaurant is certainly very unique... Literally on a Deck and you can see the ocean under your table and chair! There seemed to be a gentle swaying where we were sitting! Arrived during a busy Sunday evening! The wait was around 10 mins The hostess and the waiter were very friendly and accommodating. The Fish & Chips were excellent. The fish used was Halibut where you never go wrong! It was not greasy which was surprising. The fries were okay not the best but will do, not complaining. Anyways hope to be back again!

Melissa E.

Yelp
Had the fish tacos. The view is wonderful. Staff is friendly. I want to come back once they reopen.

Tyson P.

Yelp
Great looking spot on the dock, right on the water. Best coconut shrimp in town. Service was great.

Marina B.

Yelp
Food tasted great. I loved the service we were getting from the server. Super nice girl. Most of all I enjoyed the view. It was our first official date, so I appreciate that we were not bothered at all.

Jayn P.

Yelp
We went to The Deck today, after realizing that they offered more Vegetarian/Vegan options than Island Cafe, where we had originally planned to go. It was a nice sunny day so the ambiance was great. Our server was pleasant and I'd give her props but she never said her name and wasn't wearing a name tag. However, I did appreciate that she was dressed more modest than some of the other employees, who appeared to think they were working at Hooters. At our table of 7 guests, two of us ordered the Fish and Chips thinking we would be enjoying some FRESH fish. What a disappointment! This was obviously a frozen fish product that you can buy at any grocery store. Others at the table had tacos, Vegan Chicken Wrap, a Hawaiian Burger, and Chicken Strips. Apparently, those who had the Fish and Chips were not the only ones disappointed. The burger was a "let down", not as good as the last time and the Chicken Strips were also a frozen product just dropped in hot oil. It takes us about an hour to get to the Deck from our home so you can bet, we will think long and hard before returning.

Jeannette W.

Yelp
2nd Review, 1st visit the fries sucked. They use to have the best batter fries. Started out okay. Checked the website and it stated battered fries. I asked the waitress and she said regular fries but we could substitute waffle fries. 30 minutes after ordering a tour boat unloaded 25 - 30 people. Waitress said the our order was going to be a bit longer... really? The kitchen worked on the tour boat food. Our waitress said she would check on our lunches and never came back. I wish we were told when we arrived that lunch would be extremely slow because the kitchen was working on a large order. It would have given time to go to the Sextant. The waitress said they were out of fries and everyone was getting waffle fries. Adding salt to the wound, the substitution of the waffle fries actually cost extra for the substitution! I hate having to eat fast. NEVER going back again!!!

Yelp
Onion rings - meh. They were edible. They look like chips or petals FYI Ahi sandwich - fairly non descript. A bit tough. Not much flavor. Wouldn't order again. Bloody Mary - basic mix but not much garnish or stir stick. If you're going to serve this drink, it's about the sides. It just came with a lemon/lime slide and an olive. Boo. (And they don't serve ANY virgin drinks) Halibut bites (appetizer) - hard. Edible but only order if you're a fan of Gorton's freezer fish. Coconut prawns - these were actually good!! They give you a LOT (I think 8?) and the coconut and cocktail sauces are flavorful. I would order this again. Fries were too greasy (not a fan of this type of batter either). Clam chowder - it was decent. A bit too much on the watery side but had good flavor. I should have ordered just a cup though along with the prawns since the bowl is so big. Overall this place was OK. Low key vibe. Staff was friendly enough. View was nice on the back patio where we sat. But I still like Paradise on the other side better. But if you're in a pinch and in need of a backup plan or backup to the backup, this would suffice.

Yelp
I have to give this place a high rating just alone for the location. I mean a floating restaurant and bar. Okay maybe not a good combination. The location is perfect for the warm sunny days of Summer. Imagine a cool breeze blowing, hot sun on your face, great hamburger in front of you and cold one it the waiting. I will say that everytime I am in Portland this place just calls my name. Are there better burgers and fries, probably but this combination works for me.
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
Such a fun spot that is nestled right on the water. Great burgers and the Moscow mules were made really well. The customer service was pleasant and welcoming. Surely worth a visit!

Liz M.

Yelp
The only thing going for this restaurant is that it is on the water. You can tie a small boat next to it. The food is low-end quality bar food and expensive. I had the fish and chips. French fries with 3 small pieces if battered cod fish obviously ftom a bag of frozen ones and it was $20. I also tried their clam chowder which is not very good but not awful either.
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
The location is right on the Columbia River. They were following all the COVID standards. Lots of parking. Little bit of a hike walking on the docks. Great service, beautiful late afternoon, drinks on the water, and awesome food. Be sure to get anything with French fries, wow. Ordered the Ruben on Sourdough bread. They grill the sandwiches. The Pastrami was very lean, and I'm still thinking about that sandwich. We also ordered the Salmon tacos and other great food. Can't wait to go back. Not as crowded as Island Cafe and the foods better. Big thank you to the owners, great job!
google avatar

Jim J.

Yelp
I've found our go to resturaunt! The food and drinks were exceptional! The staff is very good. The atmosphere is amazing than sitting in a building. We highly recommend The Deck on the Columbia!
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
During the summer we (including our golden retriever Wilma) practically live there. While it has a different feel than it did with the previous owners, the ambiance and views on a nice day make it a nice respite from daily stresses. The food is good by and large so we're looking forward to it Re-opening for the season this week.
google avatar

Adrienne M.

Yelp
The scenery was Awesome. They had music playing and the sun was shinning! Came in to check out a few things and happy I did. I tried the cheese burger sliders and A Mai Tai! They both were good. Sliders were juicy and flavorful with a great bun. I wish it was toasted other than that yummy. The Mai Tai was made with Sailor Jerry and that was super easy to drink! I felt like I was on a cruise in Hawaii! Okay not really but if I closed my eyes I could image it. I liked everything about this little seasonal Spot! I'll be back for sure! I need to try those sweet potatoes tots!
google avatar

Anthony C.

Yelp
This place is ideal if you want to go out in the summer. I come here with my best friend a few times each year in the summer. It's relaxing, nice ambiance, food is delicious and the servers/owners are nice too. There's a nice little beach spot nearby too that's great for lying down and enjoying the sun.

Yelp
Ok.....yummy big ass rum drink!!!! Chips and salsa and shade for the tired puppies. Didn't explore the menu yet but my server Jeff was awesome. Walk the plank and drink up!!!! Jeff's not in Kansas anymore.
