Where To Get A Park Picnic That Isn't Crisps & Hummus

"The Picnic Pick: A hench sausage roll  ⏱️ 4-minute walk to Victoria Park’s Royal Gate East entrance Please do not be surprised if you gain a large following of anxious sighthounds while walking through Victoria Park with this meaty, super-stuffed sausage roll. Pop by The Deli Downstairs—an idyllic pseudo Sainsbury’s for Hackneyites who rightfully deem rhubarb jam and fresh goats’ curd to be essentials—and order the sausage roll. You’ll inevitably get distracted by the Guinness cake and arty tinned fish packaging, but order those too, why not. And then make your way to the park. Gingham blankets and modern picnic poster child—Torres crisps—encouraged.  " - heidi lauth beasley

Where To Pretend You’re In A Countryside Farm Shop In London

"This Hackney spot is just a Hunter welly boot shuffle from Victoria Park, and it’s a superior place to stock up on top-tier snacks. The shelves of The Deli Downstairs are lined like a Willy Wonka’s chocolate shop—but for adults who dream of Torres crisps, Guinness cake, and their vegetables displayed in wicker baskets. There are a few seats outside, but the likelihood is that these will have already been nabbed—but it’s easy to cosplay at a countryside picnic. Load up with a seeded bagel and some of Papo’s Bagels’ jalapeño smear, as well as some totopos, and head over to the park. Gingham blankets and Nora Ephron paperbacks are encouraged. The Deli Downstairs - Review - Hackney - London - The Infatuation

"Whether your weekend plan involves lazily strolling around Victoria Park, or staying home for a Netflix marathon, The Deli Downstairs is the superior place in Hackney to stock up on top-tier snacks. There are a few seats outside, but the likelihood is that these will have already been nabbed, so really this is a grab and go situation. Inside, the shelves are lined like a Willy Wonka’s chocolate shop—but for adults who dream of Torres crisps, Guinness cake, and vegetables displayed in wicker baskets. A seeded bagel and some of Papo’s Bagels' jalapeño smear should definitely be in your basket, as should some sturdy, corn totopos. The selection of well-stuffed sausage rolls are always a hit, and you can’t go far wrong with the tarts here either. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch" - Sinéad Cranna

Love supporting small local businesses but sadly was met with an appalling attitude from who I can only assume is the owner. Spent £60+ yet when we asked the server at the counter about a product that was 2 months past its best before date (and the only one left), she was rudely interrupted, and we were abruptly told to put it back on the shelf and how they are well within their rights to sell products after a BB. A jar of seed butter for £6 is pushing the boat out at the best of times, a small discount or even just a polite response / explanation would’ve resulted in a purchase. Probably wouldn’t return based on that interaction, left a sour taste and awkward atmosphere for the other younger staff.

Ravioli & Friends at The Deli Downstairs - it's an authentic Italian ravioli in the very heart of London. Definitely not your average filled pasta. Freshly made ravioli - offers innovative combination of fillings. Every single dish were delicious, well executed, delicate in texture and presented beautifully. The service was excellent very friendly and attentive. Thoroughly recommended.

I have been a regular for a while, and have received good value for money. But recently I bought cheese and could not believe my eyes, seeing staff handling the cheese, the bare surface, not the rind, with their bare hands. I have contacted other highly regarded cheese shops in London and been told that they never do this because of the danger of bacteria transfer. I don't even do it myself at home, always handling so that only cheese paper touches the surface of the cheese. I am shocked and disappointed that this deli does not do the same.

I unfortunately didn’t try their fresh food this time but it’s an impressively stocked deli, with some fine foods I can’t find anywhere else. The granola I bought was excellent.

Excellent with lots of artisan cheese and specialty groceries. A few items to purchase and eat on the tables and chairs outside. Next door is a shop selling household provisions which is charming. Do have a browse next time you are in Victoria Park Village.

I recently visited the website of Deli Downstairs as I was looking for Perbellini-branded pandoro and panettone, and have been thoroughly impressed by the outstanding customer service. Even though one of them wasn't seemingly available for delivery online, Sophie emailed me extremely promptly offering me some options, and then we proceeded to have a lovely conversation over the phone where she went above and beyond to setup a bespoke order for me to ensure I got the products I wanted with minimal effort, and within 48 hours of initial contact. It’s rare to come across such a high level of service, and next time I'm in London, I will definitely pay them a visit! I highly recommend them for not only their outstanding selection of Italian ingredients including pandoro and panettone, but also their top-notch service. Thank you again Sophie!

A very nice store with a variety of niche deli products: from Asian dumplings to French wines to local canned cocktails

Yelp
I love this little shop in Vicky Park Village! With a good cheese selection in the back, it completes the 'village' feel of the area, complementing the nearby butcher, fishmonger, greengrocers, dry cleaner, and pharmacy. There's a good selection of cordials and juice, olives and antipasto as well as organic dry goods. The Deli is also home to a cafe so you can stop by and relax with a tea or coffee. Prices are reasonable and you can, of course, buy everything in small quantities.

Yelp
We had a rare Monday off work. The sun was shining, we'd had a walk around Victoria Park and we fancied a brunch-y type offering but couldn't deal with the hoardes of children at the Pavilion Cafe. The Refreshment Room at the Deli Downstairs provided the answer. Amazing Croque Madame (only quibble would be the fried egg was a leeetle bit underdone), a bacon sandwich on really good bread with nice thick bacon and two yummy flat whites. We sat outside on recycled tables, drinking from re-purposed yoghurt pots (the posh terracotta French kind- not plastic pots!) and admired the selection of tea towels they had for sale. Service was fast and friendly, the food tasty and filling and the whole thing cost less than £15. Two happy campers!

Yelp
I love this place, it has such a great selection. Come by and treat yourself to the most decadent deli lunch you'll find in the area! From the cured meats and cheeses, to the salads and cold brew! We came in and asked for our sandwiches to be made, choosing our own fillings - they were totally happy to oblige! The problem is, they aren't yet used to doing so - the meats weren't cut properly and the salad had some stray ingredients that were a little off putting. (Totally not the fault of the deli though - it's their supplier.) for the cost, I'm not sure I'll frequent it, but I'll be back for the odd pick-me-up and hope that the attention to detail comes to match the hospitality :)

Yelp
Went here for lunch today to their cafe sweetly named 'The Refreshment Room'. They have a small menu of breakfast style meals such as eggs on toast or mushrooms on toast and some hot sandwiches. I got the vege sandwich and my boyfriend got the Reuben. Both were outstanding and came out quickly. They have a lovely range if teas, coffees and organic juices to match. Next door is their deli with fresh produce, meats, cheeses and other antipasto products. The cafe is very cute. It has a takeaway bar outside for coffees on the go and plenty of seating (some of which are made out if egg trays stacked and banded together). Very organic home-style place.
