"Housed in a former train depot that dates back to 1870, this spot offers a simple menu of Italian classics executed perfectly. They only have a few starters and salads and a small selection of pizzas and pasta, and while you can’t go wrong with a menu this short and sweet, their squid-ink tagliatelle with tuna and bottarga is especially delicious." - Allison Green

We're in from out of town to celebrate my brother's birthday, and the Depot didn't disappoint! The Train theme and overall atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and our food was terrific. I had the Conductor breakfast meal, and everything was made exactly how I like it, including some amazing homemade bread! My brother loved his patty melt sandwich and seasoned fries, as well as the homemade milkshake for dessert! Elizabeth was our server, and she was super nice and took care of everything we needed! She also suggested some things to do while we're in town, that we definitely plan to check out! She ALSO made sure my brother got a terrific piece of pie for his birthday! Overall, we had a great time, and plan on coming back while we're here, and any time we're back in the area!

A Sunday, late morning breakfast, that turned out to be a step into history, complete with great old photos of this former train depot and an actual train rumbling by outside. The food is decent as well as the service.

Owning my own restaurant myself I like to try different places to eat and this place did not disappoint! I am not much for breakfast food and you can get lunch or dinner at 9 in the morning if you want! The food was on point. The service was absolutely phenomenal. While we waited for food The train went by it was pretty neat. 10/10 recommend!

I did not eat here. I went for an interview, it was still early maybe 10:30. Must say from first glimpse this place is very nice when you walk in. I was greeted with a smile by the staff and the patrons dining. The prep was explained to me by the kitchen manager and everything sounded amazing. Everything is made fresh daily and looking around during my interview the service was amazing and the food looked even better. Presentation was on point and atmosphere was worth bringing the fam back to try for ourselves.

Google
Horrible. The owner of this place needs to be ashamed, what a embarrassment to even have a restaurant of this low quality in Grant. I am not going to go into detail but after our last visit when the food has hair in it, the steak was medium rare and when ordered medium well. The waitress never came back to check on our food until we determined it was inedible and sat there for 20 minutes doing nothing. And to top it off they charged us full price and told us the manager would be contacting us to resolve the issue. Still waiting to hear back.

A much improved visit from the past. Staff was friendly & attentive. Service was fast and food delicious!!

Google
Great food. Decent portions. It takes longer than average to receive the food, but it is worth the wait. Reasonably priced.

Google
Man I have been so disappointed and dissatisfied the last few times I’ve came here for food. The service and atmosphere is fine, but the food is not what’s being advertised. I’ve grown up in the town and the depot used to be the place to go. I ordered a French dip sandwich to go. On the menu, it says “roast beef piled high…and smothered in Colby jack” instead, I received maybe 4 pieces of meat, with minimal cheese. For 12.99, I would not recommend it. Also, all of the menus posted state the sandwiches are (I believe) 7.49, so I was a little shocked to see the price when I picked up. I also ordered a cup of broccoli cheddar soup, which was very cold after waiting about 5 minutes after picking up my order. I’m usually not one to complain, but I am very disappointed with the food I received here. I think I’ve given this place one too many chances.

Yelp
One star for the ambiance, the place is a real old railroad depot. One star for the friendliness of the wait staff. We are not strangers to this place, we come to Western MI every year and stay for months. We hit up The Depot frequently while we are here. This was our first visit of the season. We stopped for a late breakfast (11 AM) on our way to run some errands. There were very few customers when we entered. Ordered 2 over easy eggs and bacon, and an omelet, I asked about gluten free toast...not available, and nothing else to replace, like a scoop of fruit or a small juice. Then we waited. After 25 minutes we asked our food server when our food was coming. We got no explanation of what was happening back in the kitchen - like cook on brake, no cook, no clean dishes, you're not from around here we don't like you, nothing....however the waitress was sort of nice. She went back to check but, came out empty handed and began waiting on new arriving customers. Huh? A few minutes later, I asked again, she said they were plating it. Really? We decided not to run our errands, our timing was based on getting in and out of the depot in a half hour or 45 minutes. We misjudged (them). So 35 minutes after our arrival, our food came. One of my eggs was broken and had gotten hard cooked. The potatoes were tasty, but short, only 3 slices in a whole order of bacon. All this and no toast, and one egg for $17.50 with tax and tip. I tipped well, since it really was not our waitress's fault, although she did not catch that my order was messed up. Not a good day.

Yelp
Great place. Austin greeted us at the door with a great smile and seated and waited on us. Very good waiter and the food portions were large and very good. All the train memorbilia is interesting and a train went by while we were there.

Kevin W.

Yelp
Stopped on our way up north and the food and service was good . Had the hot turkey sandwich and chicken noodle soup. My son had the club car sandwich with fries that he loved. Everything was good on the way up. My son wanted this sandwich on the way home so we stopped again. Figured I'd try the hot beef sandwich and a bowl of chili and my son having the club car sandwich with chili. Well they didn't have the hot beef sandwich so had to have the turkey again. They had no chili so I went for Chicken noodle soup and then they didn't have that. Was extremely disappointing visit on way home.

Yelp
Stopped here on our way home from our cottage. The restaurant is train themed, because it's in an old train depot. The place is peppered with charming old photos. There is even a caboose for the kids to play on near the entrance. They also have a toy train that goes around the ceiling. It's just a cool place if you have kiddos or love history. Was very pleased to see they have all day breakfast for my pancake loving kiddo! He got the Mickey Mouse pancakes. Had chocolate chips for eyes and a nose and a piece of bacon for the mouth. He ate every single bite. I ordered the taco salad and it was very good nothing to write home about but will definitely get again. My husband got the chicken fried steak and loved it so much that I didn't even get a chance to take a picture of it. They also have a ton of different pies and turnovers and cookies to choose from. Lemon Meringue pie is my absolute favorite and I was able to get a piece of that. They also have peanut butter pie, pecan pie, coconut cream pie, cherry pie, apple pie.... you name it is so good and you can tell everything is made from scratch. Will Definitely be back for breakfast again!

Annie M.

Yelp
The Depot is great at doing what they do. This is a family diner with very Michigan-country style food. It is exactly the type of food that I would expect to get at any diner in the Midwest. Their menu consists of Reubens, club sandwiches, fish and chips, homestyle breakfasts, fried pickles and more. You get a big ol' plate of food for a really great price. I couldn't believe how cheap their desserts and pastries were too. I had a giant turnover for like $2 or something crazy like that. The Depot is really cute inside with natural light, a beautiful wall color, comfy booths and regular bistro style seating. The servers are attentive and friendly. This is not usually my go-to style of dining, but it's definitely the type of place that you can go with your entire family and everyone will find something on their menu to enjoy.

Yelp
Make sure orders are double checked, they have a tendency to forget item re past couple of experiences, Slow service tonight, not met with friendly greeting, very busy, two men walked out re lengthy wait, another sent food order back. Ps burrito was to salty for my taste, could only eat half at the restaurant

Logan K.

Yelp
Good atmosphere. Food is okay and service is not the best if it gets busy. I'd try to go at non busy hours.

John M.

Yelp
Took a friend for lunch. I had the chicken noodle soup and Laurie had the French dip. The soup was week, but I finished it any way. The sandwich and fries were not the same as from the last owners. The fries are bland and have a strange consistency and the sandwich was salty. We had great service. Next time, we will stop in Newaygo. I enjoy the location especially when a train goes by but the food definitely changed. I'm sure Breakfast is good...how can you screw that up...

Renee J.

Yelp
Arrived 15 minutes before closing. Wait staff very friendly, in spite of a late arrival. First time...I was hoping for French onion soup or pot roadt...neither on menu. Their beef aus just was served on white bread. Instead of a roll. which seemed odd, especially as they offered a hot roast beef sandwich with gravy and mashed potatoes. I decided to try their chicken noodle soup, waitress was uncertain if any of their souos were homemade, chef salad and a glass of Merlot. I was surprised when the soup looked creamy, turned out to be the broccoli cheddar soup...it was ok. The chef salad had lots of ham, turkey I could not finish it all. The waitress came by, after she realized she served the wrong soup. I said it was fine. She gave me a complimentary cup of chicken noodle soup to take home, for her mistake. I have yet to try it, so I cannot comment. Overall decent food, reasonably priced, serves alcohol, friendly staff.

Evonne H.

Yelp
Stopped here on our way through to traverse city. Had breakfast, very reasonable prices, waitress was efficient and nice, and the food was way above expectation. Their desserts were all homemade, and even though it was breakfast, we could not resist taking a huge turnover with us for later. Wish we lived closer so we could come here more often

Carla M.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. The service was awesome and really fast and the food was great! Highly recommend.

Yelp
Had lunch after Christmas shopping all morning. Thought I would stop at depot...usually like most of what they have on the menu. And I usually don't complain...just let staff know it wasn't their best. Yesterday was basically the last straw. Ordered chicken strip plate with fries, coleslaw and a coke. Wait was longer than usual. When it arrived the chicken was burnt and the coleslaw must have been taken from the bottom of the container (really wet). The chicken must have come from an anemic flock of hens. One strip was a little bigger than the size of my thumb and the other two hardly made up the size of the first strip. Two/thirds of the plate was covered with seasoned fries (my favorite). Couldn't eat the chicken...waitress said she would take something off...didn't happen. She offered to buy dessert, I declined, it wasn't her place to compensate me for a "train wreck". I did however eat the entire bill. Won't be going back any time soon. I would also like to warn people about their fish plates. Again the fries take over 3/4 of the plate...one has to push the fries aside to find the fish. Breakfasts are much better

Deb W.

Yelp
We had breakfast at lunch time. Everything was good and service was too. Will be going back

Michelle N.

Yelp
I will be a kind as I can as we are all still recovering from our new reality in a post pandemic world. Longer waits are to be expected, one hour and forty minutes for food is not acceptable however. Seeing as were we're one of at least four tables with this wait I know this is just standard for them. My advice is that if you are short staffed and this wait time is the norm, warn patrons ahead or simply do not be open. No apologies from manager or server. Had to cancel plans waiting for mediocre food and unconcerned staff. A warning to all, if your in a hurry, skip this place for sure.

Aaron B.

Yelp
I went here on Sunday, not really that busy I waited over 45 minutes for French dip sandwich, decent food but horribly slow service,

Kaitlyn M.

Yelp
To start off this review let me say I hate giving any type of negative feedback. I grew up in Grant and for the past 27 years have been going here and never had an issue, until today. My boyfriend and I came in to have lunch on our way home. The Depot was definitely busier than usual, but we were seated within 15 minutes. We already knew what we wanted to eat so we placed our orders and waited for the food to come out. Normally the food comes out within 20 minutes. Today we had to wait for 45+ minutes for our food. During this time our server didn't check in with us to see if we needed anything. Now I understand with it being a Sunday afternoon it's busier than normal, but our server could have checked in with us and at least given us an estimated time of arrival. Also during this time we saw people who sat down after us getting their food first, among that a party of 6. The food was just as good as it always is which is the only reason I'm giving it three stars. I'm extremely disappointed with how the Depot has seemed to go downhill over the years. I don't know if it's due to management, or staffing issues but either way it needs to be worked on or eventually it'll cause them to lose business.

Elyse A.

Yelp
Haven't been here in years! Had the chance to while in driving home from Newaygo and saw the sign for the breakfast buffet. We got seated quickly and our server was able to take our drink order quick. The buffet didn't' appear to have a lot on it, so i opted to order from the menu and just get the kids buffet for my son. I was actually surprised when I went up there, it had more than I would have thought. Two kids of scrambled eggs, meats, potatoes, biscuits / gravy, french toast sticks.. pry missing a few, too. My mom and I both got omelettes and they were a very hearty helping. Mine was good, lots of onions.. but i was okay with that. The homemade bread was very good. Food comes out decently fast, service was good. Felt like the restaurant could have been a little cleaner.. and the tables are pretty close together in the front room.. so we were pretty tight. Bathrooms were kinda sketchy... Nice option for breakfast.

Sue H.

Yelp
We went to the Depot today with my 93 year old mom. After waiting an HOUR, we were finally served "food". I ordered a French dip to share with mom, but it was more like a Reuben with VERY little meat and my daughters burger was cooked so horribly it could have been a hockey puck. Burned and DRY! I told Ashley, our waitress, and her response was "it's not MY fault"!!! My daughter asked for the manager. A "faux" manager came and comped our "meal". Thank you and we were about to leave when a man, I assumed the owner, came out and was extremely defensive and threatening with his hand in my face telling me a cook didn't show up and what was HE supposed to do all the while with his arm across the booth so I couldn't get out!! I had to ask TWICE for him to let me OUT! This is a HORRIBLE place, nothing like it once was and I will NEVER ago back even though I visit family in the area yearly.

Doug S.

Yelp
We've been to The Depot several times now and it's been good every time. The building is a restored old train depot and they've made the decor a fun reflection of that. They even have a model train that occasionally runs around the room--kids love that, of course. The food has always been good and seasoned just right. Most of the menu items are good American diner fare with fun, train depot themed names. The excellent homemade pie and great service complete the experience nicely.

Andrew H.

Yelp
Great service, poor execution. We enjoy trying new places and aren't that picky, however The Depot disappointed even us. The corned beef hash was overly salty. The coffee was literally cold, and after we asked for fresh coffee, it was far too strong (and we like it strong). Overall, we would not return.

Deb W.

Yelp
Passing through and stopped for lunch. The people were very friendly and the service was great not to mention the food. Will definitely stop again.

Mallorie E.

Yelp
Very disappointing. The quesadilla was ok, the deep fried pickles were good, the fish plate was bland and dry, the chicken alfredo was bland, but the garlic bread that came with it was over seasoned. The service was good and fast though.]

Bethanee R.

Yelp
We waited for over an hour for our food. We arrived at 1:31 we walked out at 2:40. Four tables came in after we did. They ate and three had left. Our waitress assured us we were her next order to be coming up. Ridiculous since we were the first table that should have received our food. As we had to leave because our daughter had to get to a soccer game the waitress finally was asking about our order. The cooked look confused and didn't know what she was talking about. Extremely irritated about the poor service at this restaurant.

Brian Z.

Yelp
Asked about the country fried steak.. Frozen. Chicken parm... frozen. I ended up getting "The Porter" a roast beef sandwich topped with mushrooms, onions and havarti cheese. It looks like a grilled cheese with roast beef but it was disappointed with the taste of the nasty canned sliced mushrooms. The beef was not heated through and cold in the middle. They could have made a decent sandwich by using fresh sautéed mushrooms and onion instead of the raw uncooked onion and gross canned mushrooms. See photos! I did get a piece of cherry pie to go and I had asked if it was homemade which the waitress said it was. I got out into the parking lot and got in my car took 2 bites and tossed it out the window because it was a very tinny taste which means the Cherry filling was straight canned Cherry filling. In my opinion I would stay clear of this place when passing through and find something else. I think I would have been more happy with Taco Bell

Ray S.

Yelp
Never been here before, but came on a recomendation from a friend. Waste of time and money. Would give ZERO stars if I could. First, not impressed with the place from the start. Seated under the TV, so everyone stared slackjawed in my families direction while we waited for sundial speed service. All food was brought out one item at a time by a server who hates her job. Canned mushrooms on my son's very greasy burger with a stale AND soggy bun and my daughter's spaghetti and garlic bread was essentially Army noodles and ketchup with frozen meatballs. I have purchased country fried steak from WalMart that was better quality, with the ones served to my wife and I being on par with a Banquet TV dinner. My wife and I have 20 years of restaurant work experience between us and this place made our heads spin like an episode of Kitchen Nightmares. EDIT: The piece of unknown, plastic like matierial that was inside my wife's over medium eggs ended up making her "rent" her breakfast all over The Depot's parking lot. Foul.

Gary B.

Yelp
Drove there from Grand Rapids because I had an Entertainment book coupon and they don't honor them. They have a sign on the door stating they didn't authorize it. Kind of started on a sour note, but the reviews had me go through the door anyways. I am so glad I did. Started it with deep fried mushrooms. Nice portion and fried just right. Big mushrooms that I cut in half so they would cool down a bit. Not the best I have ever had, but nicely done. My wife got the olive burger and fries. She like them both. I had the hot turkey sandwich and mashed potatoes with gravy. I do have a photo posted. The home made bread does make it look huge and I thought there would be little turkey on it. Surprisingly there was a nice amount between the bread. Not sure if the gravy was homemade or not, but it was tasty. Overall, this was a nice place to eat and a good amount of food for the price. I would agree with other post that the service is a little slower than most places, but I'm layer back and am not usually in a rush. Not a big deal to me.

Karen B.

Yelp
I'm pretty sure this place used to be an actual train depot. It has some of the best food I've had in a long time. We stopped here just on our way through on a whim and split her Reuben sandwich which was served on fresh baked bread. The bread was cut thick and the sandwich was so delicious. We couldn't resist having homemade pie and I had the coconut cream which was extraordinary. I still have dreams about it. We will definitely be back here. Their prices are fair and the service was impeccable.

Steve S.

Yelp
Was out chasing trains Saturday and stopped in for dinner. Seated quickly friendly staff. I ordered Pere Marquette steak and was pleased with food and service. Nice place for a rail fan to take in all the railroad items in the store. Small town Mom and Pop enjoyable place to eat.....will be back......

Peter T.

Yelp
The food was great. We had half sandwiches, soup, & salad. The sandwiches were generous portions and good well. We had the Club Car and the Railroad Reuben. These were delicious! Cooked just right and cheese and veggies were perfect. The cheese and broccoli soup my wife said was really good. The tossed salad was a good portion all the vegetables were fresh. This restaurant is a great fine. It's really spoiled us. Additionally, the service was very friendly and prompt.

Erica L.

Yelp
We use to go to this restaurant every single Sunday morning and we really enjoyed it. The last few times we had been there, the building was REALLY hot, the service was really slow, and our food was mediocre. It stinks because we really like that restaurant, but we have since found a new place for breakfast.

Steven R.

Yelp
I have been coming to the Grant Depot for 15 years. I do not remember how I found it, but it is a fantastic, top of the line family owned restaraunt. They have an old train theme, since as the name applies, they used to be the train depot for Grant. The interior is decorated with original train pictures, slogans, antiques of all kinds on the walls and ceiling shelfs. The original cast iron belley stove is there, and the water tower outside is the original from the train station heydays. Now as for the food, not a bad thing on the menu. All the items are train function named, like the Conductor, the Train Wreck ( my favorite ), and many, many others. All the food is "home cooked" and the deserts are home made and dangerously awesome. This restaraunt is only a 30 minute ride north of Walker where I live, so it is a great treat to ride up and enjoy the open country and farms on the way up. I love that ride up. Very relaxing and worth time going. Prices are incredibly inexpensive, and the service fantastic.

Brooke J.

Yelp
Fantastic local spot with great food at an affordable price. I always bring out of town friends here for breakfast - really generous portions and good quality. The fact that it use to be an old train station is cool added factor.

Tom V.

Yelp
Bottom line: great setting, good food but slow service. I had a club sandwich on rye that was big & good. The fries were great, maybe the best I've had. Maria had a burger with Swiss cheese. She thought it was on the dry side but I had a small piece of it and to me it was good. I had a piece of coconut cream pie and it was good. I liked the old railroad station sitting. While we got our food quickly our waitress would disappear for long periods. We needed napkins and she was no where to be seen. Took forever to get the check and then again to get to sign the credit card receipt.

Gerald W.

Yelp
Awesome food and a cool nostalgic atmosphere. Literally a few feet from the railroad tracks, we always hope a train goes by. They have model trains that run inside that the kids love. Homemade desserts are delicious too!

Brian G.

Yelp
This is the best food I've had in the Grant, Newaygo, and Fremont area. The breads that are made in-house for the sandwiches set this restaurant apart from others. The pie is fantastic. The server was attentive and kind. The only criticisms I have are that it takes a little long for the food to come from the kitchen (maybe too much variety on the menu to be faster), also it is not the most accessible restaurant. The step down to one dining area really needs to change to make the entire place more easily walker/wheelchair accessible. Nice job with this place. I will be back!

David V.

Yelp
Great food and service. Taylor was attentive and could not have been sweeter. Reuben sandwich an onion rings were the best! Definitely coming back.

Ralph H.

Yelp
The Grant Depot has good food, especially the sandwiches but, the service is generally slow.

Anne A.

Yelp
We eat here once every 2 months or so. Not fantastic food, but decent. Service is hit or miss. I like their shrimp basket. Large portion and resonably priced. Burgers are good. Steak usually overcooked. Breakfast is good. Love the trains.

Kristina F.

Yelp
A cute small town restaurant. Food was great. I had the Gourmet Burger. It was cook perfectly. Service was friendly and timely. Prices were were pleasantly low. Adorable place with great food.

Carrie V.

Yelp
Yum yum! Satisfying lunch. Friendly staff and a clean atmosphere...and home made pie!

Yosemite S.

Yelp
I love the food, but the waitress stood there and glared at our party, and walked away for another fifteen minutes. We had to go to the front desk for service, and it took another ten minutes to get service again. Service is terrible.

Bernadette S.

Yelp
Trust me they don't want me to tell you this! We have been going to Grant Depot on the way home from my in-law's house for years, the food is OK and the prices are also OK, but the draw for us is that my little boys love watching the trains go around and around the resturant, but today was the last time we will be setting foot in there. they had a busy morning and we waited for a table for the six of us. The waiter who cleared the table asked the waitress if she wanted him to take it because she was busy, I heard her say "no". Half an hour later after my husband hunted her down she asked how we were doing I didn't answer because I was upset, she asked again and I said upset that people that were seated after us had already ordered and she told me to "please don't bitch at me." My husband doesn't think she said please. I collected my hungry children and went to a different resturant for breakfast.

Jeff R.

Yelp
Really enjoyed stopping in here on our way further north. The food was good and plentiful for everyone in our family. And for railroading fans, it's a great step back in time with all of the photos, lanterns and other memorabilia filling the walls and shelves. We will return!

Derek R.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped for lunch. Service speed started a little slow, but after our sides came out everything was perfectly timed. Beautiful real wood tables, and we really liked the railroading theme. Will definately be back.

EB H.

Yelp
they have an AWESOME lemon meringue pie!!!!!!!!!!! and its a cute place too

Chris B.

Yelp
Last night I had the best steak ever. And the asparagus was also unbelievably delicious! I couldn't even eat it all, so I saved the rest for lunch. I'm eating it right now, which is why I am writing this review. This is SO good, all over again! One thing I do wish I would have done, was pick up a homemade pie in the bakery case, or even one of the ginormous cookies. Right there at the checkout, they have absolutely the most yummiest desserts on display. Cherry pies, apple pies, assorted cookies the size of plate, and much more! They have a little train that goes around the room at the top, so it's great for adults and kids of all ages. It is definitely worth the short drive, I'm going to try out the breakfast next time, they serve it all day. The prices were very reasonable, plus they also serve beer and wine, and I was told there were new owners - they obviously did a fantastic job with the food and atmosphere!
