The Depot was a great place to catch a performance, especially in the so called "VIP" section. I do wish more egalitarian words can be used to designate something special. In our current political and economic climate, expressions such as VIP and Elite seem so coarse.
Jackson Babcock, one of the Depot's managers, took great care of me and my guests. We had reserved table seating, with great sight lines, and a server getting us drinks from the quiet bar. I didn't quite understand why the bar was so empty. SLC, get your drink on! Businesses need profit to stick around. If you don't want ticket prices to go up, spend some money. Your Marijuana dealer is not helping the SLC economy. Have a chaser with that joint. Maybe I'm too used to Wisconsin.
Acoustics were great and everyone, including the bouncers, treated us with respect and dignity. I had some trouble figuring out what to do with the electronic ticket on my phone and the hard copy reserved seating, but the people working at the Depot were all patient, except the woman at the "Will Call" window, whose impatience had an air of disdain. That's probably her parent's fault.
The only disappointment was the band, Beats Antique. Their performance used so much pre-recorded music, that I couldn't discern what was real and what was synced. Because of my age, I am used to a "live performance." Bob Dylan was booed off of the Newport Folk Festival stage for using an electric guitar. Can you imagine how a band using pre-recorded sound would be treated? Of course I understand technology is an integral part of music in the 21st century. But that doesn't mean I have to like it. If a singer didn't accompany you on this tour, I find using a recording of her singing in a performance cheesy and cheap, beneath the talent of Beats Antique. In addition, the choreography of the dancers was comically bad, unrehearsed, and amateurish. An elementary school play would have better dancin g. However, all this is not the Depot's fault.
I will return to the Depot for a performance, and hopefully this one will be "live."
