While in the area to do the whole "touristy thing" with my boyfriend and his two boys, we took a break from witch-history for an early dinner at The Derby.
We started with the Poutine and then ordered the BBQ half chicken meal, the Nashville chicken sandwich, and the Mediterranean wrap. We asked for a few small substitutions which the server took care of... (potato salad instead of french fries for the wrap and sandwich, and I requested if they could add some fresh mozzarella to my wrap just to 'beef it up' a bit since the only protein on it was hummus - which I was more than happy to pay extra for) -- all were no issue, per the waitress.
(Our waitress was great, by the way. Even offering to add Grenadine to my boyfriend's son's lemonade when he asked if they had any flavored lemonade or just plain.)
Our food arrived...
The poutine was pretty standard, nothing special to it, but still yummy.
The potato salad that we had substituted for the fries was enjoyable! My wrap was yummy but pretty small, and the added mozzarella couldn't have been more than 2 millimeters in thickness - it might as well not have even been there to be honest. I still enjoyed the wrap none-the-less because of the delicious flavors but between the wrap size and potato salad portion - was left a bit hungry.
The Nashville chicken sandwich was pretty ok, but that's about it.
The real issue here was the half BBQ chicken: Firstly, this was one small chicken. It came with corn on the cob that didn't have a pleasing texture - my boyfriend's son, who will eat corn on the cob til the cows come home, took a few bites and said "dad, I can't eat this..." Next, while the portion of the chicken was small, the bigger issue was that it was so leather-dry that it wasn't edible. My boyfriend and his son picked at it a little bit (they made it through some of the dark meat but it was such a tiny piece...) but the chicken breast portion was beyond dried out. (The baked beans it came with were fine, as was the surprise slice of watermelon)
When the waitress came back to take our plates away and ask how everything was, I did take it upon myself to let her know that there was an issue with the chicken - and I pointed out how dry (and inedible) it was. She apologized and whisked the plates away, coming back a few minutes later to let us know that they removed that meal from the bill - which, for $19, we were very appreciative of. My boyfriend's kiddos were embarrassed I said something, but I told them that a chef who's proud of their kitchen would want to know if something was leaving the kitchen in poor form so it could be made right for the next time someone ordered it.
I wobbled back and forth between 2 or 3 stars but ultimately settled on 3 because the server was friendly, helpful, and timely... and the restaurant took the meal off the bill to make it right.
