6 City Club Hotels In the U.S. That Don’t Require Membership - AFAR

"Dating back to an 1891 Romanesque-revival clubhouse (the organization began in 1882) in downtown near the river, this intimate club offers about 21 rooms and suites—luxury king suites with bold purple accents and spa suites with white clawfoot tubs—and a notable on-site spa that includes heated saltwater soaking pools in each locker room. Dining centers on a restaurant that leans toward classic meat dishes (examples include beef tartare and duck Bolognese), while a repurposed library serves creatively crafted cocktails (such as the Campfire Mule and Snowing in the Sun); happy hours can begin as early as 1 p.m." - Pat Tompkins

I rarely write reviews, but this experience was unacceptable. A luxury hotel that can’t provide basic amenities like hot water is already a red flag. But what truly made this stay unbearable was the complete lack of accountability or care from the staff and management. We went had no hot water in our room. When I brought it to the attention of the staff, they deflected any responsibility, repeatedly passing me off to “management,” who were either unavailable or, when finally reached, dismissive and condescending. Instead of offering solutions or even a simple apology, I was met with gaslighting — being told the issue was temporary, that it was being handled, or worse, that it wasn’t really happening. Spoiler: it never got fixed. The attitude from management was as cold as the showers. Unprofessional doesn’t even begin to cover it. It’s clear this hotel is in decline — from the minimal staffing to the poorly trained or completely unqualified people running the show. There’s no attention to guest comfort, no willingness to take responsibility, and absolutely no sense of urgency in resolving basic issues. For the price point, I expected service, hospitality, and functioning utilities — instead, I got excuses, disrespect, and freezing showers. Do yourself a favor: spend your money elsewhere. There are plenty of hotels that still remember what the word “hospitality” means. This is not one of them.

My son came to view the room with me and the spa suite is amazing. It gives this warm and cozy but very elegant feeling. I have dinner reservations for Bohemia at 7pm tonight and I can’t wait to try their food.

What a lovely historic hotel to stay at and really a beautiful accommodation!! We had the suite with 2 queens for my daughter and myself and the beds were super comfortable - linens great - everything! Lovely room - nice big bathroom. Only beefs were room was 56 degrees when we arrived and we had come to enjoy the spa services for my daughter’s birthday and we were bummed the salt water grotto was down.

Stayed in one of the larger suites, lovely historic hotel and decor , Service however varied . Front of desk was sometimes good, other times a little lacking. The talking parrot in reception was hilarious. The one thing that let It down was the bar had an event / music night on , and it was going until early hours of the morning. Due to the building being old , the rooms are not very sound proof and it kept me up unfortunately.

Google
Elegant and Historic Hotel in Downtown Detroit within walking distance to a concert we were attending at Ford Field. The King size bed was one of the most comfortable beds we've slept in and the pillows were fabulous. We both agreed that "Bruno" the hotel's parrot was the highlight of our stay ! We will definitely be staying at The Detroit Club when back in Detroit!

Jen, the Event coordinator, is wonderful. She is attentive, knowledgeable and supportive. Thank you Jen for helping organize an event. Detroit Club is cozy and has kept to Detroit traditions in style creating a very comfortable and lovely space.

This is the review for only Dining in the dark experience booked via Fever - Me and my wife spent over $150 per head for Dining in the dark experience and we ended up leaving hungry. Portion sizes were extremely small. Price breakdown for 1 person as follows- $72 for ticket $18 booking fee $21 gratuity $8 water $20 for parking. Drinks aren’t included and are overpriced. We spent close to $50 on 2 drinks. It is a 4-star hotel but does not have any parking, which is a joke. I feel ripped off and I won’t be coming back. I would not recommend this to anybody I know either.

I travel a lot and I would never stay here again as I was in town for a conference…so early mornings. The hotel has a bar and live music which makes it impossible to sleep - at least if you are on the second floor. The crowds of loud drunk people finally cleared out just before midnight but the staff is cleaning up - so its 12:56 and there are still people (staff) talking and moving around downstairs. The doors are very thin so you can hear everything in the hallway as well as the noise from people walking up and down the stairs. It is obvious the location of this room is problematic and should you decide to stay here - do not stay on the second floor. The first 2 nights of the stay - sleep was interrupted but tonight it’s next to impossible. I spoke to a manager who was not able to move me as the hotel is booked. The hotel is clean, the bed is pretty hard and the temperature of the room is hard to regulate. The hair dryer is smaller than my hand and it took forever to dry my hair. It also took the man at the front desk 40 mins to check our group of 5 in. He stopped multiple times to assist people who were eating at the restaurant pay for their valet parking - while we waited. There are a lot of other choices in the area - I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Yelp
Very swanky and stylish library bar with a restaurant on the side, Bohemia - with nice food and will be a separate review - and other lounges. Cool furniture and lighting as well. Nice libations as well. Service was great and the bartenders were very skilled. Highly recommended!

Yelp
My mother was coming to town for a Christmas shopping visit and we booked the hotel club online very easily. The check-in process was seamless and our room was very cozy and comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed the spa and the morning breakfast. The lounge area is ambient and plenty of materials to read and cozy up by a fire. There is an adorable parrot there which just adds a touch of whimsy. The staff are all very nice and considerate and we highly recommend Staying here. There is a smoking lounge on the third floor that I know my husband would appreciate. The main floor restaurant we ate at for dinner was delicious. The hotel was quiet during sleeping hours with light jazz and city buzz heard into late night.

Yelp
The Detroit Club is a beautiful and historic building that is worth visiting for drinks or dinner. I attended a 1920s themed dinner event here, and everything put on by the Detroit Club was superb. The food was so delicious and exceeded my expectations. The salmon was so tender, and there was a made to order pasta station. I plan to return for more events along with trying SOAK Spa, which I have heard good reviews from friends.

Yelp
Came here for a trade show dinner with a vendor. The building and interior are very impressive. Dark wood, chandeliers, Victorian furniture. It's all very cool. The bar is relaxed but upscale. Bartender is outstanding and works her butt off. There are lots of comfy couches to drink and relax on. They also have a separate menu. Lots of bar type food. We had dinner in the main dinning room. We were alone. It seems that it is closed on Tuesday and they made an exception for us. That was nice. I think the manager waited on us. He was very good. The food was just ok. He was bragging about it but it was just ok. I got the sea bass and it was not as good as it should have been. The wagyu smash burger was good. Fries weee just ok too. Everyone else thought the food was just ok too. Overall the ambiance is awesome! Maybe the bar food is better. The drinks are good. Now the place is pricey. This is a special occasion type of place. But it is very cool. Even to just go in and look around.

Yelp
The ambiance was really nice. Our waiter was super attentive at the beginning and then through the middle pulled a "hudini" and disappeared. The food was ok, nothing to rave about. Half of our party like their dishes like pasta and salmon and the other half didn't. Chicken was too dry and halibut with couscous had no flavor at all. Not sure I'll be coming back.

Yelp
Nice room but no working heat. I tried going to front desk who said it would be fixed while we were out at a concert. We came back at midnight to find that room temp won't go above 75 degrees. Went back to front desk and they offered a space heater!!! I knew I was in detroit but they had no class. I asked for a manager to give a call and never received one. Just shows how much they cared!! Stay away unless you like a cold room!!

Yelp
We had a great dinner at The Detroit Club on NYE. The building is old, eclectic and gorgeous; the staff is warm, engaging and willing to bend over backwards to make sure you're happy. The drinks were amazing, and dinner was delicious. We started with raw oysters. Then for dinner I had salmon with root vegetables and my husband had tenderloin with broccolini. We will be back!

Yelp
I have had two couple's massages here; this place is impressive. The grotto is an excellent finish to the massage. I will return.

Ron S.

Yelp
Old hotel renovated has nice picture appeal, but in actuality it is not good. The renovations seem to be made to look great but are not professional nor luxurious. The hotel Front Desk doesn't look updated at all. Looks more like a coat check in at a ....'Club'. Across from it they have 'Club' T-shirts for sale. Some are out on hangers and look like they have been there for decades. Colors look faded. Just tacky. The floor of the entry is old tile. I got a real good look at the front desk and lobby as it took them 10 minutes for me to get anybody. They have a bell which I rang several times. The elevator looks almost scary, like a something from the 40's. Raggedy floor and tiles. The room itself is not bad, but it is not elegant. The Bed is on the firm side, the pillows, I called them bubble pillows. They were big and soft, but when you laid your head on one side, the other side would bubble up. Room had a nice shower but 2 things with it. I put my liquid soap bottle on the shelf and it slid off as the glass shelf was not straight. Next, after a nice hot shower, at least the water was nice and hot, when I was trying to get out, it took me a few seconds. The door opens into the shower. Nothing wrong with that, but the door handle is only on the outside of the door. Hence, with my wet hands, I had to grab the small knob backside of the handle to pull the shower door open. The furniture looked tasteful but was hard. About 9PM I was hungry and thirsty. Had an ice bucket in the room, but no plastic to put over it. Anyway, I went out the room looking for an ice maker. Couldn't find one so called the lobby. Lobby answered and said the ice was only down on the 1st floor by the entrance but they could bring some up. I said, well I was going to order some food and I could get the ice with the food. Front desk said they could take my order and bring it all up together so I made an order with the front desk....and waited......and waited......and waited....and looked out the room to see if they left it out....nope....and then at 11 I just went to bed. Hence, No Food For me. At least the net morning when I checked out it was not on my bill. Looking at other reviews and along with my experience, it seems that the place is very understaffed, hence the long waits and bad service. Also, most the other reviews are from people eating at the restaurant. I stayed at the hotel and did not get to eat there as mentioned. All in all, this is a quaint old place and is more like a Bed and Breakfast with a restaurant and cigar bar then it is a hotel. If you have that in mind, and expect that then it may be ok. However, know that service was both bad and slow, and this old quant place has been somewhat modernized, but is not luxurious or elegant.

Yelp
Food pretty good. Great ambiance. Super slow service. Where were the busboys to help the one waiter serving all the tables????

Yelp
Canceled reservations when they thought they could get more because of the NFL draft. Sleazy and unethical place. Go anywhere else.

Yelp
I did not stay at the hotel or dine at the restaurant. I went to the spa downstairs which was amazing. I also had a few drinks at the bar. I guess the drinks were really good because I left my AMEX card. After destroying my house, I called and they had the card there. When I picked it up, I had to show multiple forms of ID which I truly appreciated. Everyone was super nice and helpful. Thanks!

Yelp
Few tips when visiting this place... 1 - come correct. They can be a bit picky about who they let in. "Correct" means dressed for a semi fancy dinner and cocktails. I really enjoyed the cigar bar, non members can come and partake for a $20 cover. It's gorgeous inside through and through which made me feel fancy for being there. Bartenders are friendly and the people never cease to entertain even as a fly on the wall. I'm not a fan of the cover, although I get it (or whatever).

Yelp
What a beautiful building! I love Detroit's historic buildings, and this one is uniquely charming. Valet is available, which is great in this part of town, and it definitely has a "club feel" when you walk in, though it's currently open to the public. The dining rooms were beautifully set, the lighting was warm and inviting, and the old wooden floors add character to the space. We were greeted immediately, and given beverages. I then started with the spicy tomato soup - it came out piping hot and was creamy and delicious. My colleague had the salmon entree, and I had the lobster & shrimp roll with a beautiful fresh side salad with lots of veggies. My colleague reported that her salmon was excellent - perfectly cooked and tasty. My sandwich was so fresh and flavorful; full of perfectly cooked tender seafood, not over-dressed, well-seasoned and delicious with a touch of lemon. Both of us look forward to returning, and I encourage anyone who works in this area to head here for lunch as it is unique, tasty and fairly quick. Their prices were also very affordable for the area and portions were good. The only reason for one less star was the service was a tad slow to have such an empty dining room. I hope they fill it up and are able to add more waitstaff for the lunch hour because the food was awesome.

Jen T.

Yelp
I can't say enough wonderful thing about this beautiful building and amazing staff! our dinner was amazing and craft cocktails were remarkable. thank m not a wine drinker but they had one of the latest sections I've seen.

Yelp
Our stay at the Detroit Club was perfect. I was traveling with two girlfriends and our room was big and the beds were so so comfortable! the places seems to have been recently updated. The bathroom was great. We loved the old-school charm. Front desk people were friendly and helpful. The hotel was quiet. We hung out in the bar one evening and the bartender was so wonderful (forgot her name, she was leaving for Spain the next day). She made us some great cocktails and also had great tips for being a visitor in Detroit. Value of this place was great and it was centrally located.

Yelp
Ambience - 5 Library Bar - 5 Greeting upon arrival - 5 Staff in library Bar - 5 Hostess - 2 Waitress - 1 Food - 3 Having menu items - 1 Price - 2 There announce here is excellent. The staff not so much. The food was bland and it seems that having regular menu items available is not av strong party of their business model. Really liked the look and feel of this place, but drawbacks abound. 40 bucks for a drink and glass of wine is insane. Chicken, salmon and a bread basket came to 70 bucks, so the entire experience was over 100 dollars for poor service, bland food, but great ambience. They need to get more professional people here to have this place match the prices and the ambience they are trying to portray.

Daria C.

Yelp
we did dinner in the dark, paid almost $1000 and the meal was awful and didn't worth it...for $150 per person you get appetize, meatballs!!! which you can eat at home! and cheap dessert. won't be doing it ever again...very unpleasant experience

Yelp
I really, really wanted to be able to say this place is awesome, but it's not. The good: Service/ waitstaff - the hostess was very welcoming and kind the server was absolutely perfect. She was attentive, and answered all kinds of questions that I had related to the history of the property and club. She is truly a professional who enjoyed the service and was truly concerned that I, her customer was a satisfied patron. The wine and drink menu was impressive, the use The Botanist Gin - I mean - hello - that is impressive! The not so good: The food. The menu was fine and my reading of the menu led me to believe that this food was perhaps - hand crafted? Don't be fooled. This is typical restaurant fare. The chowder was - ok. I was back and forth between a burger or the chicken on the menu and was persuaded to opt for the burger. It certainly sounded good - three cut beef blend, signature sauce. I did ask for the no bun option and a lettuce wrap or just leaf lettuce which i was given. But the burger was cold, not rare as requested, and not a hand crafted burger. The menu should not be why you come here. Come check it out for the historical relevance of the one time private mens club where movers and shakers of Detroit changed history. I had high hopes but they were not met.

Aikia F.

Yelp
Received an amazing massage from Davion. She was very sweet and professional. I was in need of a massage and foot rub she exceeded my expectations. Will definitely be back to see her and highly recommend.

Alyce D.

Yelp
Did you read in the Free Press what this hotel did to the Toledo couple? Cancelled a two month reservation without them knowing then tripled the rate. This is a shady business. This is on my "never stay or recommend" list.

Yelp
The Detroit Club Grille will be open to non-members until the membership is filled. Then, unless you're a member, it's buh-bye to your chance for a mouthwatering meal in this beautiful, historic building. We were a party of four on a slow Tuesday evening. Our server and bartender were, therefore, not busy, and we received fabulous, personalized service. I'm not sure it would have been quite AS good on a busier night, but I'm confident it would be plenty good. The dining room is amazing; all dark wood and brass tack club chairs. Some of the tables and chairs seemed antique. The table is set with Detroit Club plates and flatware. We felt like we had stepped into an old-fashioned private club, which we had. Everything we had to eat and drink was delicious. Drinks were nicely poured and inventive, and everything we had to eat is something I would be happy to get again. We started with bone marrow, mille feuille, and bao. All were pleasing, and big enough to share. The bao was unexpected, and my favorite of the starters. For entrees, we had the pork porterhouse, pappardelle, filet mignon, and salmon. I'd recommend any of them. To finish, we had fresh-brewed coffee and a caramel flan. The coffee and the dessert were both excellent. After dinner, we were allowed to self-tour the historic building. It has a spa in the basement, a large ballroom and a cigar lounge upstairs, and hotel rooms for members on the top floor. It's quite a place! I wish The Detroit Club well in filling their membership. I will be seeking out a member to bring me as their guest to enjoy the grille.

Yelp
Gorgeous old building. Didn't stay here or eat here, but took a full tour of the place, every nook, cranny, and dumbwaiter. The place definitely has something to say - and it speaks volumes. They have a gorgeous ball room for about 100 people. the spa in the basement has a hot tub and infrared rooms. Peeked into a room and they're nice, not opulent, but tasteful. Will try to come to this joint for some food in the future.

Gabi T.

Yelp
Overrated hotel with rude staff. Horrible customer service from the minute we walked in. They act like it's a privilege to stay there. Give me a break this isn't Beverly Hills.

Lisa E.

Yelp
Thee best and finest of service and dining in downtown Detroit ! This historical hotel / restaurant caught my attention from the very moment when I called on a seriously rainy day searching for a close place to walk and dine. Reena was so polite and took great time sharing with me in detail and soon (and though I feared to be wasting her time) I was off and there, umbrella and all. Renee is a jewel, and Servers were fantastic ! I cannot say enough about the food and experience with Nigel and John. Tastes were absolutely amazing and the ambience was tops! Loved the historic nostalgia and its unique beginnings, would you believe 1882 ?! I'll say no more, the story can be researched when you come... Thank you for an impeccable dining experience !

Yelp
Upon arriving, you realize soon, you'll be transported back and time, to a place where class and elegance once reigned. The Detroit Club has over one hundred years of serving the city tucked within its walls. We dined at Bohemia, the clubs restaurant, and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our meal. Our server April and her son Caden,, provided us with one of the most incredible dining experiences we've had in a while. The dinner was coursed properly, the appetizers including beef tartare and summer squash, were delicious! Let me tell you... Order the sack of burgers if it's the only thing you order here. Probably the best hamburger I've had in a while! I went with the salmon for dinner, not to be basic but I was craving salmon skin, and my boyfriend had the hot Nashville chicken. There is another review that states the Nashville chicken isn't properly done, and since neither he or I know what that's supposed to taste like, I don't have anything to compare it to. All we can say is that it was absolutely delicious, and he stated that it was the best chicken he has ever tasted in his entire life. That's saying a lot! Sadly this time around we didn't order dessert, but will return to do so. If you are looking for a romantic, upscale without being stuffy environment, I highly recommend dining at The Bohemia in the Detroit Club.

Yelp
Came here for a nice night downtown and this was my first time at the Detroit Club. The place itself is rich with history and the decor is magnificent. I was very pleased with the ambience and scenery. The different bars within adds for a nice area for pre or post dinner cocktails; or just stop in for a few and enjoy the craftsmanship. Being my first time here, I was expecting a bit more from the service and staff. For this being toted as a somewhat private club, I guess i was expecting as such. The restaurant was pretty empty when we arrived, but they sat us feet from the bar...usually okay, but not when there were so many open tables (which remained open all night). Then there were a few other tiny issues which shouldn't happen at a high end steakhouse, etc. The food was delightful and tasty. Nothing you wouldn't expect. They don't have traditional Detroit zip sauce, but the steaks had more than enough flavor. Oh.....they charge you for bread. Hmmm, very odd, especially when it's a plain bread basket. No special garlic butter bread or anything....boooo. But, steaks and salad were good. I'd stop back in for drinks, but I think it's a bit overpriced for what you get. Highly recommend you stop in for a cocktail at a minimum, just dine at your leisure.
google avatar

Stephanie R.

Yelp
I can't say enough about this place. It's absolutely beautiful and the staff waited on us hand and foot. I felt so special. The food was just as impressive and the drinks were good too. Definitely a must try.

Debra H.

Yelp
It took a very long time to get our food. The salmon was over cooked and the lobster rolls a huge disappointment. A beautiful setting, too bad the food was lousy and way over priced.
google avatar

Jocelyn D.

Yelp
We were extremely disappointed in our evening. The kitchen is not up to the previous dining experiences we have had. The Caesar salad was not good and not presented as stated on the menu. Bread basket, that was four pieces of wonder bread toasted with butter, $12.00? Salmon was fishy and non eventful. Ribeye was mediocre. We do not plan on returning
google avatar

Sarah J.

Yelp
The star of the Detroit Club is definitely its swanky decor and atmosphere. They have a restaurant, a couple liquor bars, a cigar bar, hotel rooms, and a spa area. Public is welcome at the restaurant, cigar bar, and library bar but I'm not certain about the spa or the hotel rooms. You may need to be a member of the Club for those. We had friends with us who were interested in becoming members so we asked if we could have a tour, and our request was graciously accepted. Spa was beautiful and offered the standard services, had an infrared sauna in the locker room, several massage rooms, and a salt water grotto/pool in addition to a weight and cardio room. We were able to see one hotel room, of which there is a picture below. We were told that there is a bear claw tub in some of the rooms, which sounded lovely. The library bar is well equipped with all kinds of unusual liquors and potions and tincture-looking bottles. Drinks were well made. The library itself is cozy and had a fire going. There are lots of meeting rooms for rental and we saw them prepping for an engagement party and that was beautiful. Food is good at the restaurant. I think they have brought in a new chef and from reading previous reviews the new chef seems to be doing better. We all had a good dining experience. My friend has a few dietary needs to be taken into consideration when she dines out and our server was very helpful and understanding and accommodating. Definitely a great option for a fancy evening or a special occasion.

Yelp
This was a great stop for lunch. First of all this place is gorgeous. The dinning area has a very classic setup. There are a lot of windows so it feels brighter then most other places that have this type of atmosphere. The lunch menu has a good variety of things but it's not a super long list, which I appreciate. I went with the Chicken-Apple-Brie Sandwich. There was a good amount of chicken and right amount of brie and apples to balance the sandwich. The pesto and brown mustard were really good on it and the bread was perfectly panini'ed (it's real word, I just made it up). The chips were great as well, crunchy and light. Great place, great food!
google avatar

Jess L.

Yelp
I came here for a happy hour and it was a great choice. I got a Mai Tai, $7. Great price and the best Mai Tai I have ever had. It had a unique twist and tasted like an upgraded version of a regular one. Also tasted a friends drink, which was smooth. Classic and cool decor. Only downside is no food specials for happy hour.

Yelp
They re-opened yesterday so of course there were one or two hitches in our otherwise delicious Mother's Day brunch. Charlie, the F&D manager MORE THAN made up for anything that may have been amiss. If Charlie is the new standard this will soon be my favorite place again. THIS IS THE PLACE TO STAY IN THE CITY period.
google avatar

Yelp
First, this place is classic Detroit. Al Capone ate here and had a cigar box here. Kerry was a veteran who knew all you needed to know about food and beverage. They don't make them like her anymore. I had the special pork chop. Delicious! Asparagus was cooked to perfection and I was full. I look forward to another visit if back in Detroit. BTW: dress is business.

Yelp
What a wonderful venue. I attended a private event for a strolling dinner. The food was wonderful. We had a large variety of finger foods and small plates from which to choose. We were also able to go on a mini-tour of the club. There are 4 floors with rooms to rent on the top floor. On the 3rd floor, you will find the ballroom, a cigar lounge, and a wine closet that was made from converted telephone booths. There are private function rooms on the second floor. The first floor library has a bar at one end under a huge chandelier. Original woodwork is beautiful. You can picture Henry Ford having a drink there.
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
Wow! Please don't let the word get out. Went to a book signing and then an awesome meal. Try the Library Bar. Cigar Bar on the third floor has food I hear. Not a smoker and left. Raclette was missing the cheese. Un noticeably! Ceasar salad was very good...it better be! But some may think it's too dry. Drinks in the Library we're healthy. Parking is non existent...valet park. Or Lyft/Uber...Wait dessert.??? Chocolate Dilise....sooooooo GOOD! Yes a MUST ENJOY!

Yelp
Why this hotel rate as 31/2 star? I surprised... I think, this hotel deserve 5star even just for decoration. Hotel room is clean And real authentic classic( not just pretending) And they prepared at hallway coffee and tea and pastry for the guests with very clean display. l love this hotel. I would come to Detroit for just this hotel.

Ella R.

Yelp
Atmosphere and service was great. However the food was very sub par. We ordered the Nashville hot chicken (which is nothing like real Nashville chicken if you've had it before) and it was basically inedible. They don't use real buttermilk batter to fry the chicken....and the fried part felt way too well crusted to the chicken and thick. It should be flaky and spicy! The guy at the table next to us was struggling to eat his. We also ordered the branzino which was so over salted (we understand it's dry aged) but again, so bad. At $38, we expected so much more. Lastly, we ordered the filet which was supposed to be 12 oz but it felt like 7 oz and very thin. We ordered it medium rare and it came out well done. Don't get me wrong the wine was great but the food was just so disappointing and we really wanted to love it!!!! Really hate to complain but with 3 people and $250 + later and bad food, we will not be dining there again. That being said, if you're looking for a cool atmosphere for a drink or a wine, go for it! Just don't go upstairs for the food!

Yelp
The Detroit Club is located right in the Heart is Detroit. From its breathtaking decor, to its top of the line dinner, the Detroit Club has consistently delivered. I have been a member for about 5 months now and the level of professionalism is unmatched. I have done everything from closing their Cigar Bar down at 2am, dining in for dinner, and early morning swims in their spa. I have never been disappointed with how their team has treated me and my guests. Going above and beyond would be an understatement. If you are in Detroit looking to impress your family and friends, you definitely need to swing by for a drink in their cigar bar. I promise, you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
I'll give this place a one only for the dinner service. They were out of 3 things on the menu (shrimp cocktail) being one of the items. Service was terrible as we had to keep flagging her down for more drinks as she just kept walking passed our empty glasses. Ordered the steak and it was cold along with the broccoli still being frozen. Also saw two other tables send food back too. The only good thing about this club is the library bar. By far in my 3 years of living downtown, this was the worse experience I've had on service and food.

Yelp
Extraordinary display of architectural opulence in Detroit! We were a party of 30 and had 5 servers assigned to us. The service was great, the food was even better. For our Sunday brunch, selections from this table ranged from steak and fries, French toast, the lemon curd and blueberry pancakes and lobster and crab omelette. Our group met at noon and the timing was perfect at this downtown Detroit location. Sunday's in downtown Detroit tend to be quiet and this particular weekend is the Detroit Gran Prix so all of the action is on Belle Isle. Not sure how it would be without the races underway but there weren't very many people here outside our group which worked out well.

Yelp
While in town on business travel, I noticed the historical Detroit Club building and looked it up. It seemed interesting, so I booked a massage followed by dinner. This was the best decision I made on my trip! I had the back, shoulder and neck massage at the Spa. Much needed after days of traveling and long hours of work. The spa was luxurious, the masseuse was highly skilled, and I felt great afterwards. The spa is on the bottom floor and includes a pool, sauna and very large changing room with lockers (very luxurious) with all the amenities for you to return yourself to 'normal' after your treatments and go into public! I arrived early for my dinner reservation - it was technically before the restaurant opened but the staff was super nice and seated me anyway. They shared the history of the building and the club and showed me interesting details (the dining room still has the original wallpaper at the top of the ~20 ft ceilings and the chandeliers that are electric now are the same ones that used to hold candles.). The dining room is luxurious in every way. You truly get a feel of what private clubs in the late 1800s were like. You can tell the club is working to maintain the luxury and exclusiveness - so that when one attends the club, it feels very special. It's actually a real treat to get to go to the club as it used to be membership only - but due to being closed during COVID - they have opened up to non-members. They do plan to eventually go back to a membership basis so I highly recommend going now - especially if you don't live in the area, like me! The staff was super friendly and very responsive and made me feel at home. Since I was by myself, I had time to look around and watch. The staff learns everyone's name and addresses them by name during the whole meal. It was touching to see the staff preparing tables for upcoming reservations. I heard them saying to each other: 'This table is for the XX family. Let's move this here so they can see out the window. This table is for so and so - we should put the glasses here.' They were thinking about the experience just like you and I would plan for family coming to eat. I also noticed - with my meal and others - that the food is served in courses - with very intentional timing based on time to eat the previous course, digestion time, etc. They specifically discussed these courses and the timing when I asked. It was perfect for me to enjoy the meal - but very unlike typical American dining experiences where you have starters, an entrée and dessert and they are served as fast as you can wolf them down or even at the same time. Be sure to plan time to eat here - don't expect to rush. I was never longer than 5 minutes without a course, but I was given enough time to eat it and a course was never brought out before I had finished the one before. The food was top notch! I had french mussels - cooked perfectly with a garlic butter sauce and warm bread for my first course. It was followed by a super crisp , fresh caeser salad. I had the filet mignon (which is a generous 9 oz filet) which was cooked exactly as I ordered (my waitress waited while I cut it to make sure). I had the wild mushrooms with my filet - very tasty. And, since I can never resist a dessert, I had the triple chocolate cake served with vanilla bean ice cream. This is a REAL cake. Absolutely delicious. And huge. By this time I was beyond stuffed - it was all too good! All in all - an excellent experience at a historically interesting and beautiful location -with super friendly staff and top notch services and food. I will definitely come again when I am in Detroit.

Yelp
Valet Parking - no one watched cars. They stole my catalytic converter. We planned a reservation and it took forever to get service.

Yelp
Hosted an event here and while the venue was beautiful and the food was wonderful, the event staff didn't seem to have it all together. It turned out well but we constantly had to find the staff to make sure the room was setup. It came down to the wire but in time I'm sure they will find their groove. The space is so warm and inviting , I would recommend anything larger that 100 guests. Very intimate.

Yelp
This restaurant is all about historic upscale class! I'd love to return and stay at the Hotel above just to get more of the gorgeous ambience but that'll have to be for another day. We were greeted by the hostess who was very personable and sweet to us despite our late reservation (9:30 PM). Immediately I was struck by the elegance of the lobby and of the restaurant area, which was done up with beautiful table settings. The dress code is definetly business casual or above. The service was absolutely impeccable as we felt waited on at appropriate intervals without feeling like we were being overwhelmed but never had to call for their attention. When asked what food the hostess recommended, she made sure we chose the best items--even though they weren't the most expensive ones. My boyfriend got the clam chowder while I got the soup of the day, a spicy tomato basil. Both were delicious although the spicy tomato basil soup was definetly on the spicy end. They brought the dishes out in the most elegant way with a plate of croutons balanced upon the little ceramic pot that held the soup. They also gave us warm bread rolls, but only two of them. For entrees, my boyfriend got the 8 ounce filet mignon while I got the risotto. Both of us loved our entrees! The risotto in particular was very filling and creamy thanks to the parmesan slices they added in. It was definetly the richest risotto I've ever had! During dinner I got to admire the surroundings a bit more. Because we went in late on a Thursday, there weren't too many people. The chandeliers are brilliant and the decorations are opulent. The table setting itself gave off a fancy feel due to our waitresses' rearrangement of silverware that was so seamless as we transitioned from one course to the next. For dessert, we had the creme brûlée. I've had better, in terms of the caramel top which tasted a bit burnt but the custard underneath was so creamy and soft in a way that I loved! Overall, incredible experience! I've paid over $200 for less meals and our bill totaled out to only $97! A perfect place for your next fancy business meeting or classy dinner date.

Yelp
Had a delightful time at the Detroit Club yesterday evening. The craft cocktail lounge is very cool with a preserved old-time vibe, befitting its early history. Best improvement - WOMEN are now allowed, thank goodness! The bartender was very adept at craft cocktails, and they have a wonderful selection of brown and clear liquors. On to dinner in the main dining room. Again, the atmosphere was wonderful, and everyone we came in contact with was welcoming and friendly. The various salads & soups the six of us ordered were excellent, as were all of the entrees. My wife had the shrimp which she enjoyed. The 28-day aged ribeye was wonderful, but I order mine "Pittsburgh style" or "black & blue" (charred on the outside, very rare in the middle) and our server came back and told me the chef said that because it was aged for 28 days, he could not accommodate my request. I'd never heard that before. We had a 6:00 reservation prior to an 8:00 curtain, and although we lingered in the bar a bit too long, we informed our server that we were on a tight time limit, and she assured us we could be out by 7:45. Didn't happen, unfortunately, but as I said, we were partially to blame. Our server was VERY apologetic, saying the dining room was quite busy, but it did not seem overly crowded to us, so maybe service could be a tad quicker in the back. That said, we definitely enjoyed the ambiance, service and food and will be back soon!

Yelp
I have over the past year enjoyed this amazing club. The staff is very attentive and on point. If something is not to my liking they do there best to make it right. The Library Bar is a gem of the club. It has wonderful craft cocktails and very talented mixologists. Tara, who is almost always there is amazing! The food is great. This is a Detroit Club is a unique gem for all. I would encourage you to give it a try! Yo won't regret it!

Yelp
Are you ready for an experience? Over the past few months, I have stayed at the Detroit Club a few times. The staff are lovely and very accommodating. What makes the Detroit Club unique is it's history and authentic, classical decor. Every time I walk thru the doors, I am transported back in time. With limited rooms, the Detroit Club offers a personalized experience each and every time. One of my favorite rooms is the Honey Moon Suite. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the rooms as each one is uniquely decorated with such attention to detail. I LOVE the large bathrooms and glass showers. On my last visit, the linens and blankets were nothing like I have ever felt, super soft and luxurious. One of my favorite things to enjoy is the Cigar Bar Lounge. They have quite a selection of cigars and cocktails to enjoy. I also enjoy the morning continental breakfast and coffee, which is so convenient being on the same floor right outside of the rooms. The do not serve breakfast, but the hotel is open for lunch. If you get a chance, check out the spa located in the basement. I am looking forward to my next visit.
