15 Best Hotels in Portland, Maine

"Made up of what are essentially modern luxury apartments located, The Docent’s Collection opened quietly and is one of Portland's best kept secrets. The “rooms” have high-tech amenities like touchscreen, stainless steel appliances in fully equipped kitchens, but there are plenty of restaurants right around the corner. It's got all the amenities of a hotel combined with the feel of home, and is close to the best of what Portland has to offer." - Joe Ricchio, Alexandra Hall

From the moment I arrived my experience at Docent’s Collection exceeded expectations. The staff was warm, welcoming, and went out of their way to make me feel at home. Check in was smooth and efficient and I was surprised by the ease of extending my stay ||||My room was spotless, beautifully decorated, and incredibly comfortable. Perhaps the most impressive part of my stay was the service. Every team member I interacted with was friendly, professional and genuinely seemed to enjoy their work. Their concierge level of service is best in class ||||I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again and I am already looking forward to my next visit. A true gem in Portland!

The Docent was, by far, the finest accommodation I’ve experienced during my travels. As someone who frequently visits the northern region, I can confidently say this is among the most refined and well-appointed places I’ve stayed. My daughter and I stayed in a two-bedroom, two-bath unit on the second floor of the Thomson Block, which offered beautiful morning sunlight and a charming view of Old Port. The beds were exceptionally comfortable, and the pillows were absolutely luxurious. Access to the unit was seamless, and parking was conveniently located. The property features a sleek, modern design and delivers a true five-star experience in every aspect. We look forward to returning again soon!

Great views and amazing location to see all of Portland. Close to the docs, ferry, tons of shopping and dining, the Portland Museum of Art, and about 15 minutes from Portland International Jetway. Well appointed kitchen, comfortable couches, and the shower was amazing. We really enjoyed our stay here. Would stay again!

We had a 20 night stay in their studio suite and I cannot say enough wonderful things about it. The studio was spacious and comfortable with an incredible kitchen that made cooking so enjoyable. Every single staff member we interacted with were kind and so helpful. The location is unmatched with so many shops and restaurants steps from the door. I highly recommend this stay.

We had a wonderful stay at the Docent’s Collection. The location was superb - centrally situated and easy to navigate both on foot around Old Port & by car for longer trips. Despite being in such a prime area, it was quiet, which made for a peaceful and relaxing stay. The washer/dryer in the unit was a surprise & greatly appreciated. The hotel (more like an apartment ☺️) was cozy, clean, modern, and spacious. We especially appreciated how comfortable the bed was - it made all the difference after long days of exploring! Being located next to a police station also added a sense of safety and security. Communication with the hotel team was clear, consistent, and responsive throughout our stay. While there isn’t an onsite concierge, the self check in process was smooth and in line with today’s more modern travel experience. Overall, we absolutely recommend the Docent’s Collection for anyone looking for a well-located, spacious, easy, apartment-feel place to stay in Old Port!

We stayed for just one night, but wish we could have stayed longer. The location was absolutely perfect — close to everything we needed (Eventide Oyster Co. was a block down the street and delicious) — and the space itself was spotless and beautifully maintained. The rain head shower was such a treat, the beds were super comfortable, and we were welcomed with a lovely basket of local goodies, which was such a thoughtful and unexpected surprise. Highly recommend this spot — we’d come back in a heartbeat!

I don’t really write reviews, but this place was top notch. We come to Portland every year and this is in the best location, great value, and way nicer than the Press hotel which has been our go-to. I appreciated how well appointed the apartment was. From big details, like a really large bathroom to small details like the number of pillows.

This was a great experience for my adult sons and myself. Did notice that the therm locked and we would have lime it cooler. Lots of knocking and unusual noises during the quiet hours. Nothing to bad but definitely mechanical type sounds that woke us up. Overall great stay and we would definitely return!
