8 Best Hot Dog Spots in Durham, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Driving by one of the four locations, three of which are in Durham, and one in Hillsborough, you cannot miss the Dog House. The outposts are true to the name; the buildings are shaped like an actual dog house, making it a fun, quirky roadside destination. The playful theme continues on the menu where customers can keep it simple with the “Puppy Dog,” just $2.35, or try something tangy like the “German Shepherd” with spicy mustard and sauerkraut for $2.95. The standard offering is a snappy red hot dog, but for an extra 50 cents, diners can upgrade to beef. Either way, expect a soft, slightly mushy bun and a no-frills approach. The Dog House leans into simplicity, nostalgia, and value. Opened in 1970, this local fixture also serves up Southern staples like golden hush puppies and an old-school fried bologna sandwich. It’s the kind of place where convenience meets comfort food. No fancy presentation, just a reliably satisfying bite when you’re on the move." - Gabi Mendick

It sits nestled at a busy locale off the main strip. It can be easier or more difficult to get in/out depending on what direction you're coming from. The spot was definitely busy with customers around the lunch hour. The menu has good selections but not too overwhelming with choices. I decided to try the dogs and made it a combo. Order taking and check out was quick. This is not a sit in place. Instead you walk up to the order window and go for it. The server lady was professional when taking my order. To get my food took about 15 minutes. Everything was good overall. My only quirk was that it didn't seem like a lot of food. I definitely recommend you stop by and check it out when in the area.

While exploring NC it was fun to stumble across the Dog House. The dogs were smaller in size but you can’t beat the price. We had the Tailwagger Combo with Hound Dogs. Fries were crispy and dogs were delicious. Great spot for quick bite at a good price.

Now this is a simple, no frills, no thrills kind of restaurant. I like it. I has a simple menu and has cheap prices. This was my first time trying the restaurant in general and first time at this location. I originally wanted to try the American Classic Burger (looked at the menu online) but this location doesn't serve burgers. So I got the Tailwagger combo. It comes with two hot dogs (all beef dogs are $1 more), medium order of crinkle cut fries, and a medium drink. Not a bad deal plus you can choose what toppings you want it. I kept it simple and just did ketchup and my husband did chili and cheese. The customer service was great and she was very helpful and knowledgeable.

While exploring NC it was great to have an opportunity to try the dog house. The dogs were smaller in size like any other, but each cost about $3. Not bad and just good for a quick bite.

As a local, I grew up going to the dog houses all around Durham, great place to get a hot dog at a good price and they are always consistent and friendly. I just left this specific location and the lady at the speaker/window was very rude. I had a simple but somewhat larger order, 8 hotdogs, nothing crazy added or extra, she yells at me through the drive thru speaker they only have a 6 hotdog limit for drive thru. There is no sign posted nor has this ever been said/ posted before, fine. I go to the window as she so “pleasantly” requested, after waiting a short time, she comes to the window and just said “card or cash?”, I reply and pay, even leaving a tip. A couple of minutes later, I received my food and as soon as I grabbed my bag, she slammed the window shut without receiving the receipt I requested. This is the first time in about 10 years or so I’ve received unfriendly service from this location. When I visit, i typically interact with the manager and other team members who are very friendly and kind.

Out of the 3 dog house locations, this is by far the one I like best! They are super fast, courteous, clean and their tailwagger combo which includes 2 hot dogs, crinkle cut fries and a drink for under 10$ is a meal you just can’t get at a fast food restaurant. Add the hot apple pie and you will be in dog house heaven! Ct

Google
$10 combo for two small hotdogs, a handful of under-salted fries, and a drink. The hotdogs were surprisingly flavorless, given they were the bright-red kind I often associate with that classic hot-dog taste. Service was typical for a fast-food establishment. It's an interesting place, but I won't be coming back again.

New Bern Puppets

Google
Such a great local restaurant. The hot dogs and bbq are tasty. The fried apple turnovers are like the old McDonald's turnovers- crisp and delicious. A friendly staff. Highly recommend for a quick lunch.😀

Yelp
Quick and friendly service, cheap prices, and the food was pretty good! Don't expect the best hotdog you've ever had but really good bang for your buck. The cheese fries were actually our favorite the classic fake cheese of your childhood simple but delicious.

Yelp
horrible experience at doghouse in Durham on hillsborough Rd. I ordered 2 hotdogs and asked for 6 ketchup and was then told "Oh we don't give out ketchup for hotdogs." I was confused... the lady said "We don't give ketchup unless you get fries." she offered me 3 ketchups, I asked if I could pay for 3 more & she the told me we don't have a ketchup button..... with an attitude so I asked for a refund the lady quickly closed the window without answering my question, came back a couple mins later with another lady talking under their breath "A refund For some ketchup." the fact that I'm pregnant and did NOT want fries is the reason I got a refund mind you i was nice & polite even though I was caught off guard by the whole ketchup situation .... and the rude ass attitudes I got in return BECAUSE I WANTED KETCHUP was not necessary at all. Do yall count the ketchup packets at the beginning & end of each shift because losing out on $7 for $.2 worth of ketchup certainly doesn't make sense. so if you're only ordering hotdogs then I suggest you byok (bring your own ketchup) or just go to cookout up the street the service is better & they don't count ketchup packets.

Yelp
Hotdogs anyway you want them. They are a little slow but the food is fresh and hot. Also have decent Brunswick Stew and Apple Pies.

Yelp
Solid hot dogs, the pork dog didn't have a lot of flavor, but the beef was very juicy and the polish sausage was phenomenal. Very happy with the choices and toppings and the staff was friendly and service was fast. In under 20 minutes, we ordered, received our order, and ate with most of that time spent eating. 4 dogs were $13 and were perfect. The outdoor tables were dirty so we ate in the car, which is totally fine for a fast food place.

Yelp
Yuck- chili taste watered down like it was cooked in water and then drained and put on the hotdog. Hotdog tasted like nothing. The bun was cheap and wet. Nothing special. Just gross

Jay G.

Yelp
guys....this makes no sense. put it in a cup. Never have i ever seen something this absurd in all my life. At best you're serving melted styrofoam to your customers.

Yelp
The Dog House's website boasts that their philosophy is to serve their food "with fast and friendly service...come by any of our stores and see for yourself why The Dog House has the best hot dogs in town." I did. They don't. That is not to say they were bad. They were just decent. Average. And perhaps they are the best hot dogs in Durham. But that would be nothing to boast about. Things did not start off well when I was given disinterested, aloof service in place of the promised fast and friendly service. This set a negative tone, but I kept an open mind. Maybe the dogs would save the day. All the way: the slaw was good, but the chili was pretty bland. I upgraded one to the all beef wiener, which is usually a good decision, but it did not make much of a difference here. It is a lower grade of all beef to the point that their traditional pink dog, one of the tastier ones I have come across, was actually better. German Shepherd: sauerkraut and spicy mustard...it was good but not great. Old Yallow: this one is recommended by Our State Magazine. It is covered in liquid cheese product and bacon bits, and by bacon bits I mean the imitation bacon bits that have no bacon in them. My expectations were pretty low. But I confess that I did enjoy this hot dog. So maybe if you are in the area The Dog House is worth a try, but this will go down as another strike against Our State Magazine's List of top hot dog joints in North Carolina. They just don't belong on any such list.

Yelp
I'm upset I didn't order two hotdogs! So good! Really nice gentleman working there too. Will definitely be back for more hotdogs!

Yelp
Fast, Friendly Service. Best Hot Dogs around and there are a lot of great hot dogs around Durham. Great Chili. BBQ and Stew are great too.

Yelp
This might be one of the easiest restaurants to spot. It's a great place to break your diet and comes complete with a drive-thru for this purpose. You can't argue with the prices here. I don't think you can break your pocketbook and go home hungry. In fact, I'm not entirely sure you can break your pocketbook here. While I prefer beef dogs to the pork dogs they serve here, the Ol' Yellow was fantastic and I wish I'd gotten a second one. The dogs don't have a snap to provide texture, but the bacon bits helped combat this significantly. The other dog I picked was a puppy dog, but being plain, the meat just didn't hold up on its own. Also, if you're not a fan of mustard, your menu choices are extremely limited. The apple turnovers are cheap and fantastic. They smell and taste like some treat you'd get at the NC State Fair.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of hanging out with my Supervisors, and Coworkers, at Nurse Care of NC, (Durham- Office) to be shown Appreciation for always being early or on time, never absence, nor late. Anyway the office staff began discussing this great hot dog, place. They have my vote as best tasting hot dogs in town. I will be back!!! Stop by People and try it for yourself!!!

Yelp
Don't eat here. No special orders. Wrong change. Off by $10. Missing food from the bag. I mean there was only 3 hotdogs on the offer. They screwed it up by 33%. Terribly slow service. All in one, my first, and only, visit.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to eat for many, many years now. Good prices and always consistent! if you wanna pig out on some good ol' hot dogs then this is your place!

Yelp
I love the German Shepherd! Staff is friendly food is great! Fries are always hot and service is quick when you are in a lunch break hurry. I love to stop in and pick up a half dozen dogs and fries for the family dinner!

Yelp
A hot dog house shaped like a dog house. My siblings and I were giddy as little children running up to marvelous hut. I've been burned by gimmicks before, so I wasn't expecting much. Man do I love it when a place proves me wrong! On top of being one of the coolest places I've ever seen to house hot dogs, the fun continues with the menu names. The names are vast and humorous, making the decision process difficult, but I endured! I went with a "German Shepherd:"spicy mustard and sauerkraut. Sounds simple enough, but this is one of the best hot dogs I've had in a while. The dogs themselves are really flavorful. My second dog was an "Ol' Yallow:" mustard, melted cheese and bacon bits. Now this excessive, diet-killer is what one dreams of when dreaming of hot dogs. If you don't fall into a coma after savoring the "Ol' Yallow," try the Hot apple turnover (topped with homemade icing). They caught our eyes when finishing up our order. They are just as good as they look, the icing really drives it home. You'll never be happier being in the Dog House--check em' out!

Yelp
Always good food and always get my order correct in drive through. They are fast considering everything is made to order. And they are always friendly

Carter G.

Yelp
We and my friends pulled up trying to experience a new food spot. We pulled up order two dogs each, ate the dogs, and experienced extreme regret. Please, for the love of god, do not eat at the doghouse.

Yelp
Want to eat like a local?? Go to the Dog House, any location works. Yes, they use red, skinless pork hot-dogs, and yes they boil them, but, we locals grow up eating here, and we love it. My wife isn't a fan, so, it's a treat-myself sort of spot. A tail-wagger combo featuring one Ol' Yeller and one Hound Dog with an orange soda is fantastic. As far as the location, it's convenient to a lot of areas in Durham, and the folks working there are pretty quick and generally courteous. This location is my favorite of the chain.

Yelp
Why are the hot dogs pink? Maybe it is a southern thing or something and I just don't get it but the food was horrible. I got a dog with chili and onions and it was gross. The hot dogs were pink inside! I can get past the color but they tasted gross too. So maybe I just had a bad dog, but their chili and onions were gross too. I did not like anything I ate from here. And I really gave it a chance. Again, maybe I'm out of the loop or something but this food did not work with my tastebuds.
google avatar

Kate W.

Yelp
This is just iconic. From the giant dog house to the pink, boiled hot dogs. It's nice for a change of pace. The chili and slaw aren't soaking wet so easier for stuffing in my mouth driving down the road. Cheese fries are just fries covered in a canned cheese sauce but it was loaded on for sure. It's a good place e when u want a fast dog especially if in Durham on Hillsborough Rd. It is what it is. Enjoy!

All About C.

Yelp
This overall is my favorite location over quality control but timing is definitely an issue. I was in line last week for over 10 minutes waiting at the window. If my money had not already been paid and I did not already have my taste buds set for it, "I wouldn't have purchased". Food is not overly priced I definitely love the fact that they offer beef hot dogs which they have for a while now. This location is extremely busy so unless you have time to wait I was saying try someone else but it's well worth it.

Rachel K.

Yelp
I live five minutes away from here, but I've never really noticed this place, which is weird because it's a really obvious yellow, dog house shaped hot dog stand. This place is fast and cheap; they do not have seating, so you have to either sit in your car or take it home. They also have a drive through. The worker said this place has been around for 30 years, which was a cool fact we found out. We ordered the beef dog with chili and a beef dog with onion, ketchup and mustard. Maybe it's because I like the simple things, but I liked the latter. They have different style dogs on their menu that I wouldn't mind trying the next time I go. The ladies there were sweet and informative.

Yelp
Food was awful, cold, and on top of that didn't get all of my order! $14(two tailwaggers) for and incomplete order, but maybe they did me a favor. O yea, I called to let the so called manager know that my order was incomplete and I had to ask the manger to apologize for messing up my order, being that she was the one putting it together..well that's 20th century customer service for ya! sucks

Yelp
I did not grow up on the red wieners of the south so these hot dogs left something to be desired. The prices have increased from what the menu online displays. A collie and ol yallow with an apple turnover was over $5. Sigh. Next time I will head down the street to Cook Out for my hot dog craving but I will return for the apple turnover. They're DELICIOUS!
