The 22 Best Restaurants in Richmond, BC - Eater

"Richmond is booming with hot-pot restaurants, and this Chinese import is one of the best. In contrast to most other places, which feature a large, shared pot, diners at Dolar get their own individual hot-pots — still with the option of a split bowl containing two broths. It’s the quality of the broths that makes Dolar rise above the others, whether it’s pork leg bone, mushroom, Szechuan hot and spicy, or tomato and oxtail. Items to add to the hot pot are impeccable, and you can always count on a refreshing ice cream cone at the end of the meal. [$$$ - $$$$]" - Jay Friedman

Went for lunch during happy hours and they had a special menu going on and decided to go with that. Food options came with free bar and made it very acceptable for its higher prices. There is also free ice cream at the end. The servers were very helpful and explained a lot of their options. Very impressed with their knowledge. The atmosphere was amazing as it feels very high end. Even the washrooms were very good, clean, and well maintained. Would come here again for special occasions. 5 stars overall.

I recently went back to The Dolar Shop for a family birthday lunch after a long break, and the way the tea service implemented felt unwelcoming. I ordered tea for myself thinking it would come in a cup but it turned out we got a whole teapot. Since some people didn't like the tea I ordered, I asked for an alternative pot of tea. The server told me I couldn't get another pot until I finished the first, and then another server said each table only gets one. When I finally finished the pot, the server made a big show of checking it was empty and then demonstrating that the tea could still be brewed (unnecessary!!!). The whole thing felt like I was being policed over tea. If the restaurant is worried about waste, they should serve tea by the cup, not force a whole pot on a table. Plus, the cups are so small it's hard to cool the tea down. It felt like they were offering bottomless tea, but it wasn't really bottomless. Apart from the tea issue, I honestly didn’t enjoy the overall service. More training is needed!!!

Our party size was over 20 ppl, so we had an entire area to ourselves. I was quite impressed with the service we received. The staff were efficient and attentive and they topped up our soup proactively. We mostly ordered meal sets which came with a good amount of food. The wagyu was very tender and worth the price. The only downside was that I felt the amount of vegetables that came with my set was a bit lacking.

Love the quality of meat and seafood offered. It’s definitely on the pricey side, but it’s a good spot for special occasions. I love that each person gets their own soup as well. Service was fast and great.

High end hot pot restaurant and i like the service and quiet area. There are many appetizers, candies and desserts to pick at the front counter. That adds the touch to the meal. I picked my own tea as well with great flower taste. We have 5 people so order separately instead of set meal. Quality is better and we can pick what we like to eat. Make sure save appetite for free unlimited soft serve ice cream at the end. Ice cream has strong milk flavour and i love it. That completes the meal. Shrimp paste must order!

Another go-to hot pot place in Richmond. I really love the bar and the options for meat are good, along with decent quality. Slightly on the expensive side but still recommend eating here.

I've never been super into hotpot but this place I would definitely go back to eat it. It feels more upscale in quality and flavour. I can definitely taste the difference between this and cheap all you can eat hotpots. I definitely would rather eat this even if its a little pricier. I also love the mini pots on the table so everyone can have their own pot like shabu shabu style. Service was great in the beginning, they even called us to come earlier for happy hour. Felt like we were starting to get rushed out of there near the end though since dinner service was starting. Definitely get the shrimp pate thing. They ball it for you into the pot at the table. Desserts were great too. Even the ice cream tasted good and not cheap quality like Ive had at other places.

Unfortunately, I had to give a lower rating this time. I’ve been here many times in the past and used to really enjoy it. After coming back recently, I felt that the quality has gone downhill a bit. The soup base, in particular, didn’t taste as good as I remember. I used to bring all my friends and family who were visiting from out of town here because it was one of my go to spots. But honestly, this time around, I left a little disappointed.
