6 Drive-Through Adventures for Socially Distant Explorers

"Since 1968, residents of Puente, California, have been satisfying their sweet cravings by driving right into a giant donut. The Donut Hole is a special kind of drive through. Flanked by a fiberglass donut on each end, the tunnel houses a bakery window that serves up all kinds of delicious doughy discs, from glazed to chocolate frosted to coconut dusted. Originally part of a chain, the building is an example of the mimetic (also known as “programmatic” or, more simply, “novelty”) architecture style that was especially popular in Southern California from the 1920s through the 1960s. With the rise of the car, businesses were looking for new ways to capture the interest of the increasing number of drivers on the road. A simple sign wouldn’t do: In addition to giant rooftop sculptures, some architects designed buildings in the very shape of their products: tamale shops that looked like tamales, hot dog stands shaped like hot dogs, and so on. While the rest of the Donut Hole franchises have since disappeared, the one on the corner of Amar Road and Elliot Avenue—the only one constructed into the tunnel of fried dough—is the sole survivor." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

A throwback to old-school donut shops! The Donut Hole is the perfect spot for an indulgent, no-nonsense donut experience. Their glazed donuts are melt-in-your-mouth delicious, and the maple bacon one is a fan favorite. It’s a drive-thru, but there’s a tiny outdoor seating area if you want to hang out. Great for a weekend treat or a quick snack on the go

Google
I’ve been wanting to try this in previous visits to California but could never fit it in. Finally got there today and it was worth it. Donuts looked great in the drive thru display and the staff were friendly and seemed happy to be there. Lots of varieties, decent prices. I got a maple bar, old fashioned, buttermilk, and apple fritter and all were outstanding. I didn’t eat the buttermilk until maybe 7 hours later and it still tasted fresh and wasn’t dry.

Google
I’ve been to this establishment a couple of times this place has been around a very, very long time continuously, making donuts it’s famous the most picture pictured doughnut store in the country .They got a variety of donuts, croissants, sandwiches, and beverages the services courteous and friendly. they only take cash today we ordered a few of the old-fashioned donuts, they were good. The prices are in line with the rest of the donut shops in the area. I wanted to stay you got a watch out how you drive in it’s a narrow space and you don’t want to scrape your rims.

Google
A drive-In Donut Shop which you drive through the middle of a Huge Donut I ordered the Strawberry N Cream and Peanut Butter Donut Both were amazing and super delicious the peanut butter one blew my mind with how tasty the PB was and how soft and yummy the Dough was and the PB little Cups on top as crumbs were Spectacular

Google
I drove out of my way to treat my son to a donut at this place because he liked the shape of the outside of the building. The inside of the Donut Hole building is just a regular rectangular building with a small selection of donuts, and they didn't have any bagels even though they had signs everywhere advertising bagels. We waited in line, ordered our food, and then when I gave them my debit card, I was told CASH ONLY. Who in the world carries cash?? I get direct deposit, and getting cash requires either driving to an ATM and getting charged a fee or going to the grocery store and spending $5 minimum to get cash back. Who has time for that???? A drive thru is supposed to offer convenience. That's the whole purpose. It's to save us the time of getting out of our vehicle. If I have to drive around, find a place to get cash, walk around, walk back, drive back, that is truly inconvenient and doesn't provide easy accessibility to the public to buy donuts. This building is stuck in 1968. Why is "CASH ONLY" not posted on a sign outside the drive thru????? What a waste of time and gas.

Google
Fun experience for the kids! Single lane wide enough for most (not all) cars. You drive right in and their display of donuts are on your left side. The display isn’t very fancy, typical of what you see in most donut shops. At the end of the line is the window where you tell the person your order and they will box it up for you. This place is CASH ONLY. There are a couple parking spots if you wish to stop and eat but this layout is really designed for you to drive through and leave.

Google
What a cool place. It was drive thru. Quite the line of cars waiting to go thru. You enter a big chocolate donut and drive down the center. Pull up to counter and a guy took my order. I tried a maple bar. And ordered the cronut. They warmed it up and it was mouth watering. Also ordered a dozen donut holes. Wow. They were light and airy and kinda dissolved in your mouth.

Michell Symor

Google
It’s a refreshing concept; the donuts are delicious, and the waiting line isn’t too long.

Yelp
I grew up in Puente right over the bushes across the street from the Donut Hole on Nantes best donuts you can buy! The post office was on the other side of the wall in my backyard...PURO PUENTE!

Yelp
Iconic drive thru donut shop, offering fresh donuts to La Puente since 1968. The distinct building, which is shaped like a donut, is a prime example of mid century Programmatic architecture. The business was once a chain with multiple locations, but today, this is the only remaining shop. I felt like a kid again as my husband and I drove through the giant fiberglass donut. Inside, a large case offers an impressive selection of donuts. They have all the classic cake and raised donuts you could hope to find, plus colorful decorated and fancy filled choices. 6 donuts set us back less than $15. They accept cash only. My favorite, ironically, were their donut holes. The bite sized pieces were fried to perfection, and drizzled in a crisp icing that was not overly sweet. The classic raised/glazed and chocolate cake were solid, and I loved the adorable rainbow decorated donut. The strawberries and cream filled donut was full of real, ripe strawberries. I hope The Donut Hole lives forever.

Yelp
Fun neighborhood donut shop that is in the shape of a large donut. I think the only way to buy donuts from this place is by drive through...and through the giant donut hole. It's not just a novel way to get food - they have a good selection of different donuts as well. It should be noted that I think it's cash only. The service and operation is very similar to a fast food drive through. I came here because I heard of this place through a coworker and just wanted to drive through and get some donuts. I got a maple bar and a chocolate chip bar. I thought they were good! I think freshness depends on the time of day you go, but I will say that I went after lunch and the donuts I had seemed to be fresh. Again, I think the only way to order is through the drive through. There is minimal parking, but it's usually not necessary unless you plan to park and eat your donuts there I guess.
google avatar

April F.

Yelp
It's a donut shop. You drive thru the hole. This place is always on the "odd roadside stuff" lists I find when looking for something random to do with my family. It's fairly easy to find and drive in. Obviously they have more selection the earlier you go. Someone took our order at the first window which was odd because we hadn't even seen what was available yet. We paid and received order at second window. The workers were polite but not overly friendly. I was underwhelmed by their donuts, I've had much tastier. Their cronut holes were pretty good. I don't think I'll return but it's a fun experience for the kids.
google avatar

Chelsea B.

Yelp
Got the glazed donut fluffy and yummy. Classic donut no complaints. Ordering was quick and easy. You can see the donuts through the window. There's a couple of spaces for parking so you can park and eat your donut. Driving through the donut is so much fun. There was several reviews saying donuts weren't fresh but mine was, I got it on a Monday at 10 am. I highly recommend it if you're into history, quirky roadside attraction, and donuts.
google avatar

David Z.

Yelp
This place is exactly as advertised. It's a drive through a donut hole. I'm telling you, as a grown adult, I had a lot of fun driving through this and ordering my sweets. Service was fast as expected. There is no sit down area, so you get the donuts to go and be off on your way. This place is a treasure. Had plenty of laughs with the family.
google avatar

Danny P.

Yelp
We've been to this establishment a couple of times, it's been around a very long time continuous making donuts since the 1960s. Today we got a couple of old fashion donuts for dessert after a dinner in the SGV. The service is is courteous and friendly and Just so you know they only take cash.. They have a variety of donuts, croissant, sandwiches and a variety of beverages. The prices are in line with the rest of the donut shops in the area. The architect is unique structure, really famous. Lastly you need to watch out how you drive-in it is really narrow and you don't want to scrape your rims.
google avatar

Angela C.

Yelp
*CASH ONLY* To be honest I only stopped in because I was driving by and saw this giant donut tunnel and I just HAD to go check it out. The driveway is narrow and I was scraping my tire driving thru (Toyota Sienna van) so be careful. They offer a good variety of donuts - bigger than other donut shops. They also have croissants, breakfast sandwiches, and fancy donuts like smores and this cute rainbow donut. I ordered a bunch of stuff and when I was ready to pay with Apple Pay they said that they only take cash. I didn't notice the sign inside. So I found $5 in the car (I don't carry cash often) and drove away with one buttermilk donut. It was good, not mind blowing, but standard donut shop taste. I would not hesitate to come back with cash to try more of their offerings!
google avatar

Karen ..

Yelp
CASH ONLY $20 for 1dozen seems a bit over priced. The quality is just ok, nothing great. I also don't like that they squeeze 1dz donuts in a small box so by the time you get to your destination the flavors are mixed & smeared.
google avatar

Sammy B.

Yelp
My family was craving donuts on this rainy morning, so obviously the Donut Hole was our first stop. Love this spot because of its drive thru and great service. We got apple fritters, old fashions, vanilla sprinkle, and blueberry. We will definitely be coming back again!
google avatar

Tony T.

Yelp
I came here mainly to check out the cute donut drive-through. They have a good selection of donuts which were pretty yummy and reasonably priced. The only downside is that it's cash only.
google avatar

Sergio Z.

Yelp
This is my first time at the Donut Hole so many years I remember myself and a friend always go there for their fresh donuts and wide selection of donuts. The outside looks the same I cam remember the fun part is going thru the hole and seeing the donuts behind the window. The one thing my wife and I enjoy the most is the apple fritter I remember trying their apple fritter it was full of flavor that I remember.

Matt M.

Yelp
yall need to update your hours if you aren't going to be open at 5 AM on Sundays, maybe today you guys slept in
google avatar

Cindy M.

Yelp
No no no no! My friend came here and ordered donut holes. She found bugs in them and was going to give up and just toss them. We were at the end of the tunnel when she noticed. I told her no you should get your money back. So I went back and told the lady at the counter to look at the bugs. She started yelling and saying that I put the bugs there on purpose. Why would I do that? Rude lady threw the money at me and took the donuts. I told her "you better not put that back to sell to some other costumer " disgusting place. DO NOT GO.
google avatar

Laarni L.

Yelp
I came here to drive through the donut hole. It's so darn cute lol. Make sure to bring cash, you'll see a cash only sign. Just ordered the chocolate bar and tiger tail. Tiger tail has a little crispy outside, the dark color is very cinnamon-y which I liked :) I didn't love the chocolate bar, the outer part was dry for my taste, however, the inside dough is very soft and moist. Donuts 3.5 stars for my taste
google avatar

Anna C.

Yelp
Freshness and quality have gone down. After going to The Donut Hole for years and being pretty happy with the quality, it's sad to say that there's a change in quality. Therefore my once 5 star review has now changed to a two star review. Three out of the last four times the donuts have not been fresh. Then just this week the service was very different too. I'm not sure if there was always a time when they sold a dozen donuts for a standard price. Most donut shops do. Yet I was told this week by the shop attendant that The Donut Hole only sells by each item/donut, and not a standard price for one dozen. That's so weird. Whatever corners are being cut are making the quality of the donuts less fresh and sometimes not fresh at all (stale). Hope that there's a way for this once awesome donut shop to be good once again. Bring back fresh and quality donuts.
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
What a fun surprise. I was starving and driving around in an unfamiliar town about to give up, roll the dice and turn into the next restaurant I found. Luckily right around the corner was an in n out and this place. Eureka! The Donut Hole is the best thing ever. Lots of delicious fresh donuts, super nice lady working there too. It's just an all-around win. The only thing I would say worth noting, and this is not a criticism, just a heads up. It's kind of narrow. The opening is plenty big enough but I was in a pretty small car, a Porsche 911, and I was worried my wheels would rub on the curb on either side. If I was in a large work truck or possibly even a large sedan I may not have risked it. Looking back though, that damn donut was so delicious it may have been worth it.
google avatar

Ben T.

Yelp
We drove 45 minutes to check this place out. It was so worth it! It's a cute little donut drive-thru with a big selection of gourmet donuts. There wasn't much of a wait (only a couple cars in front of us). The person working the counter was fast and friendly. I definitely recommend this for a Sunday adventure...or any day of the week, really!
google avatar

Ray M.

Yelp
Driving into a large donut, one feels as though they are about to enter a ride at Disneyland. Kinda cool. Donuts here are always fresh, affordable and employees though they don't always smile, are very friendly.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
They only take cash! Such a huge inconvenience! They don't give receipts! When I pay cash I need a receipt to make sure what I paid is correct. I had to ask for one. The donuts weren't even that good TBH.
google avatar

Mike C.

Yelp
Pretty cool and unique place for some doughnuts. The drive-through itself is aesthetic and great for pictures. It's kind of something I'd expect to see in Disneyland or Universal studios. They have a bunch of different flavors of doughnuts, ranging from regular/standard flavors to unique flavors such as smores. I came here for the smores and lucky charm doughnut. The smores doughnut was pretty good, just the right amount of sweetness. The lucky charms doughnut could be better, the cereal itself was super stale and soft- meaning it's not fresh and it's been sitting out there for days. I have no idea when they make their doughnuts but itd probably be best to come right after the make it. Overall, the 2 doughnuts were $7 - not bad considering the uniqueness of the doughnuts. I would come back to try other flavors, but I'd want to figure out when they make their doughnuts - because I prefer the cereal to be crunchy and not soft and stale.
google avatar

Vanessa T.

Yelp
Amazing donuts! My fiancé and I came here two weeks ago for the first time. I got a maple bar and he got a tiger tail. These donuts are the SOFTEST, best donuts I have ever had. The maple bar was super soft and not too sweet. It was the best maple bar I have ever had! The tiger tail was also super soft and tasted just like a cinnamon roll! Super happy with this place and their donuts. It's also a great photo op! We went back a second time with my little sister and got another maple, a strawberries and cream donut, and a s'mores donut. I honestly just wouldn't recommend the s'mores donut. The marshmallows tasted old and stale probably because they're burnt and then sitting out all day. But the other donuts are really freaking good so it still gets a 5 stars.
google avatar

Raquel L.

Yelp
Always saw posts about this place on IG for years and decided I wanted to be a local tourist and check it out. Once you arrive, one can't helped to be in awe and appreciate the creativity of this donut business. It's located in the corner of an intersection and also close to a In N Out, so what a perfect convenience for people to eat a meal and get dessert at the Donut Hole. As you drive your car into that donut, it was well lit and the donut displays you can find in the left side and once you reach the end, you can place your order. I ordered the donut holes, jelly filled donuts and chocolate bars. All the donuts I bought were yummy. Does it taste any different from other donut places? No. I think it's just the thrill of going to a uniquely built donut place and definitely worth a IG post. The Donut Hole has been at this same location since 1963, so I would consider this place as a iconic landmark. If you've never been, check it out and get your picture to post on your social media accounts.

Yelp
I've driven by numerous times but decided to actually go today since it was raining and I was craving donuts. the drive thru line went by pretty quickly. their menu is pretty extensive. I'd recommend browsing beforehand or you'll be deer caught in headlights at the front of the line. we ended up with a plain cake, tiger tail, croissant donut, maple bar, and a Bavarian cream + donut holes. cake donut and croissant donut were major let downs, do not try these. croissant was not a cronut at all and underbaked in the middle. tiger tail was okay but I much prefer donut man. donut holes were a okay though, they're my faves so that is the saving grace.
google avatar

Lorena M.

Yelp
Pricing SHOCKER!! I'm all for supporting local small businesses so I figured I'd stop by for 1dz of fancy donuts (going to party) it was $42.50!!! KRISPY KREME & PORTOS is much cheaper than this! Could have gotten more quality pastries for less. Donuts were soft but cereal toppings such as fruit loops, captain crunch etc... we're very stale. Sorry but Not worth $42,50!! NEVER AGAIN!!
google avatar

Melisa A.

Yelp
Keep in mind, I visited The Donut Hole around 7pm on a Friday. With that said, not too surprised that the donuts we ordered were semi-stale by the time we got there. We got the Cronut Holes, Tiger Tail and a Crumb Donut. The Tiger Tail and Crumb Donuts were great; it was the Cronut Holes that were a bit tough to swallow (literally), though I suspect these would be fantastic fresh. The only reason we went here was to see the iconic donut shaped building which did not disappoint. Ordering donuts through a drive thru was a bit hard, you kind of have to have an idea of what you want, though they do have a walk-up window. They have a very tiny parking lot (I think 2-3 spaces) which makes the drive thru convenient.
google avatar

Evelyn P.

Yelp
If you see this place, try it out! It's a little fun different way of getting your donut needs. The donut holes were so delicious! I wish I would have gotten more donuts just to try them out however the excitement of driving through a donut!!! Made me scramble and just blurt out "donut holes please!" I think anytime I drive by I will definitely have to stop and get some yummy snacks. It's like a drive thru car wash but instead of getting your car cleaned, you get to fill your stomach with sugar and bread. Yum! (And your car doesn't get washed)
google avatar

Lillian J.

Yelp
Cute place. Fun entrance as you drive through a giant donut. They didn't have the donuts we wanted. So we opted to get others. They were good, fresh. Service was average. You can tell she felt bad for not having what we wanted. We'll be back to try to get the donuts we wanted. TIP - if you're looking for the giant Texas donut, you need to put your order in a day ahead.
google avatar

Ivan B.

Yelp
Great service, super fresh and tasty donuts. Such a stable of the town, The kids and I loved it.
google avatar

Astin H.

Yelp
Simply the best. I tried this donut shop for the first time while living in the area. Have made several drives back for the donuts. They are one of the top donut shops in Los Angeles and the donut looks pretty cool to drive thru. If you go midday a lot of the donuts are warm.
google avatar

Kevin P.

Yelp
What a cute bit of Americana, a drive through donut-donut shop! My wife told me about this on our way back from the snow and I thought, you know it's a short detour on what would be a long drive to the valley, what's an extra 20 minutes? And as silly as it seems, it was worth seeing the smile on my wife and daughters faces as we pulled into the back end of a raised donut. The donuts are good (not amazing or overly creative) but they are what you'd expect out of a donut shop, with a few eye openers and a HOT cup of coffee. The single staff there was nice and happy to serve our awkward grinning faces their sweet takes on the simple pastry. Would I go back? Sure, but only if I were in the neighborhood because I was like Mario Cart swerving through the streets to get here - might have been the way Waze took us, but I wish it was right off the highway. So if you're hankering for a donut and happen to be in the neighborhood, stop by for a glazed raised or their fluffy crueler and coffee! But remember it's HOT! Enjoy.
google avatar

Leslie L.

Yelp
*Homer Simpson voice* : Soft...... fluffy ...... donuts Drive thru donuts The only downside is that it's cash only
google avatar

Eli P.

Yelp
Donuts are good but disappointed because donuts are getting smaller. They look like mini donuts, and the price is getting highe. r on top it all they only accept cash boo

Stev L.

Yelp
I often look at this place and wonder, what would La Puente look like if this eyesore was gone? Maybe a nicer neighborhood, this building is old AF and old restaurants subtract from the community, time to close this place like snappys. Also, one time i got a booger in my donut, it was red and green and huge AF! Just go to Dunkin or 7-11 for donuts.
google avatar

Ozzy R.

Yelp
I've been here before. Fresh donuts at 1pm. Very narrow drive through. So be careful. Service is good. Fast. Wide variety. Plenty to choose from. Prices are fair. I love this place. But I wonder how I can get donuts if I ever walk up or come on my bike. Anyway, stop by. I love this place.
google avatar

Bertha S.

Yelp
Fast service, two people helping at the windows. Fresh donuts. CASH ONLY!! Luckily I had cash! Who carries cash these days.. sometimes I do. I live less than a mile away and would come back but not eager to come back.
google avatar

Roman A.

Yelp
I saw a social media reel and said to myself, let's check it out. I was cool and unique but the quality was not all the hype. Service was kind and fast. No credit cards accepted so that was a bummer. Will I go back? Maybe if I'm in the area. Not to take a trip and grab a donut. I'll make the trip to the Glendora spot anytime.
google avatar

Aaron R.

Yelp
so DELICIOUS!!! everytime i go the donuts are fresh and delicious. they have such a homemade consistency. the service is great, the team here has always been so sweet. their variety of donuts rotate frequently so we always get something new. their s'mores donut was truly an experience, after ordering it, they got a blow torch to melt the marshmallow right in front of us... so cool!!! the donuts are consistently great, delicious, doughy and light. i really love the donuts from here. definitely give them a try!! they're addicting!!
google avatar

Tiffiny H.

Yelp
I love The Donut Hole! Simple things like driving through a giant donut make me really happy! I have been here a couple of times, now. The donuts aren't fancy like some places offer, but they are good enough for me. Nice and fresh! And the staff is nice! I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Kevin W.

Yelp
Who wouldn't want to drive thru a donut!!! Amazing drive thru set up. Cash only! No deals for dozens. Everything is per item. Can get really backed up since there is only one lane. You can order at the first window but you don't see all the donuts unless you drive to the second window. Ordering with a mask on is so hard to understand. Came on a Saturday morning and it was only 1 car in line, when I left it was 10 cars deep. Basic Donuts - $1.15 each - Pricey for the simple stuff. Sprinkles and old fashioned were good. Fancy Donuts - $2.75 - Dressed up but was nothing life changing. Small donuts compared to other places with these types of donuts. Donut Holes, half dozen - $1 Cronut Holes - $3 - Best thing here. Amazing texture and bite. Good portion for the price. Bagel Ham, Cheese, Bacon Sandwich - $5 - Disappointing sandwich. Bagel tasted old. Cool mom and pop spot with decent donuts.
google avatar

Estevan L.

Yelp
This place is gross i got a booger on my donut here once. Food is usually cold and donuts are way too greasy
google avatar

Christian L.

Yelp
Does not accept credit card, but has awesome doughnuts. If it was up to me I would hit this spot every time due to the design and fun drive through.
google avatar

Nolan S.

Yelp
I grew up a couple miles from here and today was the first time I have ever stopped in for donuts. I just had to. This place has a couple special donuts along with your standard fare. They even have a HUGE glazed that goes for like $7! It was impressive. There's a green curb area next to their walk up window or you can drive right on through the famous donut hole itself. Check it out and support a local staple!
google avatar

Janet K.

Yelp
So not the best donuts but love the fun of this epic drive-thru. I love driving through the giant donut and supporting local businesses. I'd say if you're gonna go, get there early to get fresh donuts. We tried a variety and the best one was the croissant donut holes. Hope this one is always available and not on rotation because they are yummy!
google avatar

Xue Vee Y.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for a while and finally made the drive out there. You drive through a huge brown donut and pick what you want through the window, which is kinda fun. On the right were two ladies who grabbed your donuts for you. On the left, you can see someone making the donuts fresh! I ordered 2 sprinkled, two twisted glaze, one s'mores (they torch the top to toast the marshmallows), and one strawberry cronut. (Pregnany cravings are real y'all!) I went specifically for the strawberry cronut but almost didn't get one - the woman initially said she couldn't make it for me because the cronut was already glazed. I didn't understand the reasoning so I asked if she could make me one anyway and she was nice enough to do so. Woo hoo! Everything was super fresh and yummy! There are no prices listed so your total is a surprise! It's also CASH ONLY. Luckily we found some cash in the car and prayed we had enough. Total came out to ~$12 for the 6 donuts.

Yelp
They just ripped us off, we always come here but the lady made us pay twice for a dozen of donuts. She was calling us liars but she is the one who took our money. Bad experience, never coming here again.

Yelp
Great donuts. Cash only. If the car line is too long, you can always walk up to the window. We went at around 9 on a Saturday night & they still had a variety of options available. The donuts aren't as cheap as other places, but they are worth it. Get the cronuts! Or, yet the cronut holes!!! They are soooo good. So crispy, so buttery. I will say that they are a tad too sweet, and I'm someone who LOVES sweets. The guys working there are really efficient & kind! I'm not sure about the pricing for everything, but for 2 dozen cronut holes, 1 dozen donut holes, 2 cronuts, and 3 chocolate bars, it cost around $20.

Yelp
Oh man, I thought this place would have iconic donuts because it's such an iconic building. But whoever owns The Donut Hole now has run it into the ground. They're basically donuts you can get any any corner dump but probably not as good. I knew I was in trouble as I entered the drive-thru and saw dirty windows and sloppily hung, generic breakfast sandwich signs. I had a stale cinnamon crumb and an old fashioned. I've had much better, needless to say. What a shame because the building is unbelievable!

Yelp
Donuts you're absolutely amazing! Melt in your mouth delicious, no wonder they have been around for so long! Driving through A huge donut is also not some thing that everybody gets to experience, that was fun for the whole family. Service was great, prices are fair. I can't wait to be back! I highly recommend it! Some of the best donuts in LA!
