My boyfriend and I stayed at the Double Red Duke for two nights in July 2025 and overall, we were very pleased with the experience. Our room was very spacious with a pleasant view of the hotel’s greenhouse area. We liked the ‘country cottage’ aesthetic of the room but also appreciated the modern amenities such as the very good air conditioning and huge walk-in shower, which is always a big plus for me. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and we appreciated this also. Our room was made to look immaculately clean each day, so thank you to the cleaning staff for this.|We ate at the restaurant one night and the food was delicious; a very noticeable step up in quality from many other hotel restaurants. Breakfast was similarly lovely, and we enjoyed sitting in the garden room at the back as it was very pleasant.||There are a couple of reasons why I cannot give this experience 5 stars, however; they are small reasons in the grand scheme of things, but for a hotel with a good reputation such as this (and a price tag to match) I think they are fair.|1. When we arrived at 3:30pm, there was no-one at reception and it took a long time to locate a member of reception staff. I had to poke my head into the kitchen area and ask them if there was anyone who could check us in; it then seemed to take an unusually long time/seemed strangely difficult for the staff to locate someone who could do this, so we stood there for quite some time unattended to. For a small hotel, I’d expect every member of staff to be able to do a guest check-in. This is obviously a small thing, but just for context, a couple of days prior I’d received an email from the hotel asking me for my estimated arrival time and inviting me to optionally upload a photo of myself ‘so we can welcome you when you arrive’ (or words to that effect.) I had no problem providing a photo and indeed I did, as I was interested to see how that would play out when it came to my check-in experience. As it happened, it led to a bit of a deflated feeling as I felt the hotel had set something up which they weren’t able to follow through on.|2. The staircase just round the corner from room 7 where we stayed was labelled as a fire escape, but since the door to that staircase had a window in it, I could see that the whole time we were there it was blocked by a large pile of seemingly forgotten-about/unattended-to housekeeping paraphernalia. Again, a small thing, but high price, high expectations.||All in all I would recommend the Double Red Duke and would be happy to stay there again. It’s a beautiful hotel in a lovely village setting offering great access to the Cotswolds and a great option for those who are privileged enough to be able to pay more for a premium hotel experience.
