The 15 Best Bars in St. Paul

"The Dubliner has been around in the University Midway neighborhood since 1983. (Its kitchen, which once served Irish classics like Guinness-battered fish and chips and a Guinness-braised beef stew, is currently closed until further notice.) But the Dubliner is known for its wide selection of pints on taps and top-shelf whiskeys — and it’s a go-to spot for Irish music, culture, and dancing, plus live music: Catch local acts like the Twin Cities Céilí Band, Charlie Parr, and Alex Rossi." - Justine Jones

I'd recommend coming to the Dubliner on a night when there's live music. I'm sure there'd be a great crowd. Parking can be a challenge but that's because it's kind of in a difficult part of town to park. Pricing is somewhat high for the area but you're also paying for the entertainment. Came in on a Tuesday evening and there were few people there but the trivia was fun. Come check it out if you like live music and old world vibes!

Google
You order at the bar. There is no table service. No food. Prices are fair, and the decor is what you'd expect from the place's name. It's a corner bar, and that's what you get. It's a his place to have a quick drink or two with a friend.

Google
Great bartender. The live band was solid, the atmosphere was great and the drinks were cheap.

Julia Ploof

Google
This is the best Irish Pub in the cities. It feels like you stepped through a portal straight to Ireland🇮🇪

Karl Alden

Google
One of my favorite places to stop for a drink in the cities, I always seem to be able to get out spot near the corner and share a talk with a friend. Sometimes there will be a nice little folk band or the like, people sitting to read their books.

Google
Great Irish pub with great Guinness (authentic slow pour!) and heggies pizza. Unfortunately the kitchen closed as result of the pandemic. Great bartender running the place by himself, but I'm glad the pub is still around. Pool table, pinball, and darts in the back. Great place to meet people of any age group.

Google
I stopped by to celebrate the 5th anniversary of my car breaking down a few weeks ago. This place has always been a good time but I quit drinking almost a decade ago. The bartender was such a genuinely nice guy he asked one of the patrons if she knew the person she was leaving with. I've never in my 45 years of life seen this type of concern from a bartender and think he should teach a class to the rest of em. Thanks for givin a damn ~ huge respect from this broad!!! 😇

Google
The Dubliner used to have a kitchen, now it does not. All you can get now is a frozen pizza warmed up at the bar. Also they used to have popcorn, which I like. Now, they do not. The service and atmosphere are okay, but I miss being able to go in to hang out with a cold beer and popcorn or burger and fries. Beats me why they'd change in this manner.
google avatar

Yelp
Sheesh. This place has changed. Bonnie's Cafe, the greasy spoon of amazing breakfasts is gone, and is now a game room. The popcorn? Also gone but the Heggies is still being served and it still smells amazing. There are daily beer specials and live music happening. I like this place, parking lot is easy and since I last wrote a review of this place, University Avenue is getting cleaned up as is the clientele. A couple of tables of ladies hanging out this Thursday evening and the Vikings game is on all the TV's, which just so happens to be two, one in each room. This is no longer the bar of yore, but the old school feel is still there as that "age" and "comfyness", like a well worn hoodie, just cannot be replicated in newer establishments.

Yelp
This is one of those dive bars that just does it right. Stopped in to see the live music that they often feature. They had an excellent guitarist playing covers in their corner stage - good volume where you could be immersed in the front or still chat with your table in the back of the bar or the game room. The bartender was fast and friendly, even joking back and forth with the guitarist which made for some good laughs. Their game room is really their biggest asset - for a dive bar their are plenty good wastes of time including darts, pool, pinball, and a collection of board games. They offer some local seasoned pretzels and the usual run of the mill bags of chips but often have a food truck parked outside as well. I continue to pray this place keeps its authentic and great local feel - no better place to relax!

Yelp
If St. Paul is Minneapolis' twin, the Dubliner is Vegas Lounge's unapologetic irish cousin. Come for parm pretzels, JFK's alluring stare, big game hunting, and patio chain smoking.

Favorite bar in the twin cities frrr bar tenders are awesome vibes are awesome and JFK is there

Yelp
This place is a low key gem of Saint Paul. Do yourself a favor and stop in on your next venture near Vandalia. The whiskey collection is authentic and true to the lush lands of Ireland. Complete with Teeling, Powers and Tullamore Dew to just name a few. We had a small bar group and took a seat right when we walked in. John the bartender greeted two of us who arrived early and i ordered an iced tea. We ordered the fish and chips per recommendation. It arrived hot and fresh with house-made tartar and a lemon. The cod was succulent and lightly battered while the fries were crispy with just enough seasoning salt. The seasoning on the cod was light which I appreciated and the batter on the fish resembles the consistency of tempura batter. The staff does seem super relaxed and meets basic needs of service. But nothing over the top. So although the food was outstanding, I had to give 4 stars.

Yelp
Authentic Authentic Authentic Irish Pub This had to be said 3 times because it is critical to the review. Once a week, there is an Irish jig night. Let me paint a picture. The entire bar will stand up and one person will go in the middle of the restaurant and sing and Irish limerick while the rest sing the chorus while swaying. This will go on for hours. Don't side: You may need to go directly to the bar, even if you have a table to order food, but everyone gets involved. You will not get the best service, but what you will get: 1. Great Irish food that will leave your stomach happy and make you forget your diet for the night. 2. Entertainment. Even the bar tenders had strong Irish accents 3. A good cold pint or two 4. Outdoor patio in the back (Note: Folks do smoke, so if this bothers you, sit inside 5. Open seating (don't expect a host). You may need to jump on a table because it can get crowded in the evenings. If you want something divey, where you don't need 5 star service with great food and entertainment, this is a good place to go located between Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Yelp
I had no expectations coming here, I find that's the easiest way to go into things. It was an all-around hoot! We went in on a Tuesday night because some out of town friends wanted to check out the Irish Set Dancing. A great little band was set up and a small group gathered to set dance the night away. My friend participated, but I was content to observe and take in the people and the pub. We dove into some fish and chips and beverages. The food was hot and was tasty, which sometimes can be a hit and miss at a dive bar. I knocked it back with a Magners Irish Cider which was stellar. This is a seat yourself place with a dark interior and the love for the Kennedys is proudly displayed on the walls. Had some great conversations here, and in the land of MN nice, that is REALLY hit and miss (this coming from a transplant). There's a patio out back, but it's a wee bit smoky. So if that is not to your liking, you'll want to sit inside.

Yelp
Cute little pub! So after partaking in yoga and a pint at Lake Monster Brewing my girlfriends and I needed sustenance! The Dubliner was super close by since we couldn't wait for the food truck to make it to the brewery. Check in on Yelp and get a free cup of coffee! Perfect! Plus the cups were on sweet little paper doilies! Since it was March and we were in a pub I chose the corned beef hash special with eggs and toast. Pretty hilarious they were out of the mainstay toast choices so I got cranberry wild rice toast. Excellent choice! That cranberry wild rice toast was the perfect ending to over easy eggs on top of some damn good hash! Really great flavors and diner taste! The restaurant was quaint and cozy with wood booths and an old world pub and diner combo feel. I definitely want to stop back for happy hour or dinner sometime soon!

Yelp
very slow service and bartender was definitely on drugs. Also I left my wallet there and that same bartender stole cash out of my wallet. Went back to a new bartender and got my wallet back without my cash in it. very unprofessional and stole 80 dollars from me. wasn't worth the time and money to try to fight it. I hope he can use it to buy more drugs.

Yelp
Second time here for their Full Irish. It's closer than the other spots that have Full Breakfasts, so instead of schlepping out to Morrissey's or Anchor, I stopped by today. This is just a review of their Full Irish - I haven't ordered anything else off their menu, though I have stopped in for a beer. Firstly, there are better options in the Twin Cities. Secondly, it's not really what you would call authentic. More like US Chinese restaurants' approximation of Chinese cuisine. Or Mexican vs Tex-Mex. Close, but not right on. No rashers, American bacon instead. Hash browns. American baked beans, not the milder Heinz variety served in the UK. They did have black pudding slices, but it was hard to taste them because they were VERY well done. The banger was pretty close - but again, it was a spicier variety, more like a brat than a proper banger. So, it filled me up, but wasn't a real Full Breakfast. If you're looking for authenticity in your Full Brekkie, hit up Morrissey's or Anchor (the former holds the title).

Yelp
Hands down best food ever, the blood sausage was amazing, my whole meal was perfect eggs were done to perfect . I highly suggest trying out this little pub. When I'm down this way again I will definitely be going here. 5 star staff...

Yelp
Lunchtime entree to go! I stopped at Dubliner for a quick to-go order, picking their Reuben (which was a good choice). It comes with fries (they were crispy & SPICY). This is an Irish rendition of the Rueben: chunks of delicious corned beef with kraut & good cheese on rye! Update 2019: same great experience here at Dubliner! It's the whole Irish enchilada: funky atmosphere/good pub grub/fantastic Guinness pours/live music/service. Don't forget to claim your YELP benefit of a cuppa Boot Strap coffee!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is classic. Love this bar. They have free popcorn and darts. Also a large screen playing any game and a stage for live Irish music. Pretty cool. They have a patio in the back which is nice in the summer. The inside is classic for a Irish pub. Cool retro bar and large area for seating. Also their food and drink prices are great and their specials are always on point. The bartenders are always kind and it's right next to the light rail. Great pregame place. Just overall a great stop!

Yelp
I haven't been here in nearly twenty years, and right now, I surely don't regret it. We stopped in for lunch, since they bought the cafe next door, I did think they had regular lunch service in the cafe. They do not. They serve food in the bar. You have to order at the bartender, which doesn't make sense, because it was quite busy. He was really struggling to keep up, and it took us quite a while to order. It also took quite a while to get our food. We ordered two grilled cheese sandwiches, and onion rings. I didn't expect that it would take as long as it did. The grilled cheese sandwich was quite small, and was very plain. No choice of bread, or cheese. Their menu does NOT match the menu they have posted online. Unfortunately, the things we were planning on ordering were not on the actual menu when we got here. When we asked, we were told, "Not today!" So, which day then? They do deserve a star for the onion rings. They were great! Very unique flavor. I would've preferred if they were served hotter, but they were excellent.

Geri V.

Yelp
Looked for a lunch place and beer. This pub does not offer food although there are photos with food. Options are frozen pizza and chips. Looks like it could be a cute bar for music though.

Yelp
Located on University, this place is hard to miss. Owned by Jewish Catholics, there's a shrine of JFK all over the walls, which is fun to look at once you've had a few, but creepy initially lol Ricky served our beverages last night and did a wonderful job at maintaining the bar. He had wonderful energy, and explained a bit of the history of this place (hence, me knowing it's owned by Jewish Catholics) I'm not sure if mentioning that is offensive, but he made an emphasis on it as if it was an important part of the story. He also used that reason to explain the JFK shrine. The vibe is chill, and a great place to meet with buddy's and chat.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a straight Irish bar experience - if that's what you want, then this is your place. Good Irish beer selection, better Irish whiskey selection. Fair pricing for the cities. Plenty of seating, good place to meet people and enjoy a pint. If you need to light a candle for your favorite Irish author, they have a shrine there. Beat up chairs and tables (typical Irish Bar stuff). Big Bar. Laconic bar tender. Live music some nights. You can watch the Viking game (one projection TV, not awesome picture). No food outside of frozen pizza and popcorn (it's a bar, remember?). If I am in the area, I will be back.
google avatar

Sophie S.

Yelp
Please go when there is live music and make sure you get an Irish beverage - from whiskey to snakebites. My favorite local pub. But must admit the staff is never that friendly.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Phenomenal pub with good food. Live music almost every night a must visit in St. Paul. How many pictures of JFK are on the walls? No one is sure.

Harry B.

Yelp
Want to go to a real Irish pub? This is the place to go in the twin cities. You like live Irish music? Here you go. You want a pint of Guinness and a good conversation with a bartender from Dublin? The dubliner has you covered. I recommend.

Yelp
Ok so this was my second time here as my first time here was a bit hectic (I was here during St. Patrick's Day weekend). Now coming here on a non Irish holiday I was able to experience the food, drink, and atmosphere on a normal day. When I came in there was only bar services o I just sat myself up at the bar and put in my order with the bartender who was friendly and seemed to be making good conversation with the patrons. I ordered myself a pint of Guinness, the obvious choice in my opinion. The bartender knew exactly what he was doing, when I got my Gunniess the foamy head was spot on resulting in that perfect signature dome shape. And of course my pint came in the signature Guinness glass. For the food I ordered a Shepherd's Pie, and my very first! I loved that it was served in a small clay pot vessel, so it was pretty hot. My first Shepherd's Pie was yummy. The mashed potatoes on the top were cooked nicely, and made great with that melted cheese. The mash on the inside was really nothing too surprising, tasted exactly as I expected it to, ground beef and lamb with mixed veg in a tomato light sauce. But I was very happy that when I dug into my dish and exposed the delicious mash underneath the potatoes, that I was hit with a great woof of lamb. That made me smile as a Shepherd's Pie should have lamb in it and the fact that the lamb was the dominate scent and taste in this pie proves that this was a pretty authentic Shepherd's Pie and not a Cottage Pie. Overall I was quite pleased with the service here and my meal. I definitely enjoyed my pint of Guinness and will try to stop by again for another and also get me some Irish Whiskey!

Yelp
Try the Scotch eggs! They're Zach's favorite. We're here on a Wednesday night for Irish music and dancing. Talent and experience not required, just the right attitude.
google avatar

Glenn M.

Yelp
Another one of our favorite places to meet up with friends. Usually we see music from our favorite local bands but the last time, we met our friends for a bite before going down the street for a show. The kitchen was good and I really enjoyed the Irish Stew. The bar is very good and has all of my favorite Irish beers, especially Guinness.
google avatar

Shane K.

Yelp
(Note: Reviewed at three stars due to only one visit, and only to drink) This was a pretty decent spot to spend St. Patrick's Day this year, and it's just a $6 Uber ride from O'Garas (if you're out and about on the 17th). Despite being quite busy, I didn't have to wait too long for a pint of Guinness, as they tried to keep multiple cups lined up, setting at the bar. If you're a Guinness snob like me (I mean, I do hold an official Perfect Pint Poured certificate), you know the key to the perfect pint is the settling. I was impressed with Dubliner. Usually when demand is high on St. Pats (and even not high at other places) the pint is not allowed to settle, and thus the Guinness doesn't reach its full potential. Now that the Guinness lecture is out of the way, back to the review: overall I was very impressed with the service despite the crowd. Will add more stars as I come back and try food.
google avatar

Yelp
Thanks to Steve T who got together some funky Yelp friends to experience Dubliner's Right Track Soul Night! Right Track Soul Night is the first Friday of each month, and is free to show up at 9pm and throw your body around to some 60's vinyl. I was excited when I saw on Yelp that there's a private parking lot, but at 9pm it was filled up. I had to circle around several times since there's no street parking around, until a spot opened up. Enter through the back of the building where you will be carded inside. The interior is fun and divey - lots of character and characters! There's a bar area with stools and several assorted tables with seating. I saw different displays and memorabilia including old bicycles and hardcover books. And I really love the neon sign of the old establishment. The crowd was super diverse - friendly people of every age. Call drinks are $6.50 each I believe. There's a popcorn machine too, but I was disappointed that it wasn't running that night. Or maybe I was relieved, because I can make myself ILL with all of the popcorn I can cram down my gullet. Especially with a gin gimlet to wash it down. The tracks came on and the tables were moved to make for a dance floor. People were getting down with their bad selves (as my dad would say), yet it wasn't too crowded or loud for our group to enjoy conversation. Such a fun Friday night!

Yelp
Our second visit to the Dubliner Cafe for breakfast on Sunday 11/13/16. The restaurant was cold minimal heat. The egg dish we had in our first visit per our waitress was taken off the menu because it took to long to prepare. My hash browns were starch laden and stringy. Wild rice toast was the highlight. Disappointing that this Cafe had so much potential when it replaced Bonnie's but it is now very generic in its offerings and service. Came back today. The food (veggie omelette) was excellent. The space was warmer and more welcoming. Quirky waitress but she is young. All in all I think they have gotten the kinks out. A good choice.
google avatar

Amintha R.

Yelp
it's very much an every mans bar. I don't expect too too much. The drinks are a solid level every time I go. The music seems to always be playing. the staff is attentive and I appreciate that. There isn't much else to say about it, They do have popcorn.

Brad S.

Yelp
Had another great meal at the Dubliner. You have to try the Reuben Burger. Simply Fantastic. Tom and Geri have hired an amazing cooking staff that is creating outstanding bar food. Go and try it.

Yelp
Live music and poetry readings. Very clean bar with lots of space. The reuben was perfect with a good balance of chunks of corned beef, kraut, and thousand island dressing. I ordered at the bar and they have very good ginger ale which was always filled. Anxious to try the other side. The AC was very comfortable on a hot day.

Yelp
I love ceili dancing there on Wednesdays! Friendly people, great live music, very supportive to the local Irish dance and music world. Decent food, good beer.

Yelp
This place pours a great Guinness every time! If you're lucky, it'll have a clover for luck in the bishop's collar. Other draws: free popcorn and live music and dancing.

Yelp
Stopped in for a Saturday breakfast on the 25th, at about 11:00 am. I got the Dubliner Café Standard, sunny side up with sausage, doll got the same, just scrambled, with bacon. Pretty basic breakfast. First, it took a good 10 - 15 minutes to get coffee and the menu's. Our wait person was really a sweetheart, her name is Rachel. She was very sweet and apologized multiple times for the wait. The place was full when we walked in, but it's not a big café. What I observed is that the kitchen could not handle much more than one meal at a time.
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Enjoyed the Irish dancing here on Wednesday. The fish tacos are amazing as well. I really liked the friendliness of the patrons. I would say this place is great for groups. The artwork on the walls tells it's own story. The live Irish music is great. The Wednesday night band was amazing. I'd say overall it was a great experience.
google avatar

Joe V.

Yelp
If you're looking for Irish Whiskey, an Irish Pint, or Classic cuisine with an Irish flair, I recommend it! A Pub atmosphere on one side casual dining on the other. We had a large group and shared some of the food items. Splitting the items to separate checks at the end was no big deal for our server. A well trained friendly knowledgeable staff provides a great Pub and Dining experience. The Chef has an incredible imagination - the menu is delicious, and unique! I had the goat cheese flat bread toasted triangles with a sweet red onion jam - POW! Also, if you've never had deep fried, hard boiled eggs with a zesty horseradish cream sauce, you need to get to this place! Incredible!

Yelp
Brie the bartender was awesome! We enjoyed her personality and hard work. The Scottish eggs and Ruben were absolutely delicious! Can not wait to go back!

Yelp
I've been going to the Dubliner Pub for years now. I dance there as many Wednesdays and I can, show up on all sorts of other days because they have some of the most entertaining live bands and a dance floor that is completely perfect. One of the best things about the Dubliner was the lack of screens. It was truly a place to meet people without the distraction of some flashing screen to distract from getting to the know the person on the bar stool next to you. I am saddened beyond words to have that TV playing in the corner. Every time I tried to watch the dances, my eyes were drawn to the bright flashing TV in the corner because that's what humans do. It use to be that during the dancing we were drawn to watch the flow of a skirt or kilt as the dancers spun and the silly antics of people moving to music. I will miss the old Dubliner Pub. It's so hard to find a bar without a TV...the Dubliner has lost one of it's best charms.
google avatar

Yelp
This is your classic example of both charming St. Paul and your local neighborhood watering hole. Best Irish pub in the twin cities and I say that with confidence. When I first began going there (circa 21 years of age), it only offered bags of chips for $.50 and Heggies pizzas, which being a simple man was enough for me, but in the last few years they took over the adjoining space in their building to offer a sit down restaurant which now includes a full kitchen. They've gone to great lengths to preserve the history of the location, evidenced by the enormous "Ace Bar" sign they have inside, which if you don't know, was what was originally in that spot 100 years ago. All kidding aside, the live music, the Kennedy posters on the wall, the ambiance and the fact that in spite of having a new kitchen with many more food options they still proudly serve an epic frozen pizza, is what keeps me returning. Hands down my favorite Irish pub and one of my overall favorites in STP. Head on up and sing along with the crowd.

Yelp
We went to Dubliner Cafe for lunch. The quinoa and kale salad was delicious and my brother loved his Reuben sandwich. The service was prompt and friendly. The atmosphere is casual, clean, and nice. The space was recently renovated and they did a great job. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
1-1/2 hours for a burger, don't think so. Haven't seen it yet, doubt I'll be back. It's a fricken Monday for Christ's sake!!!

Yelp
Just had lunch at the Dubliner Cafe! The food was wonderful (generous portion of fish and chips) the service was prompt, and the staff was super friendly. An interesting and varied menu. (I gotta go back!) The atmosphere (modern/retro) is really inviting and comfortable. Close to train stops and easy parking. A lot of fun!

Yelp
Best bar ever! Go get a Magners and enjoy the free popcorn. Great live music most nights. Irish dancing every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. Be aware the pub quiz on Sundays is the hardest in the twin cities.

Joseph S.

Yelp
Good place. Chill Irish pub. I had the cranberry turkey sandwich and a Bloody Mary. It was what I would expect and an enjoyable experience with my family.

Yelp
I have had Guinness in practically every bar I've ever walked into where it's available and I have to say that it tastes the best at the Dubliner. There have been studies done about how beer tastes better in the right atmosphere and I believe that it is true. I've been to all the fancy places downtown St. Paul and Minneapolis who try oh so very hard to look like fancy pubs in Dublin but that is about as far is it goes. You won't find fake vintage Guinness ads and newly printed copies of a Dublin newspaper from 1932 in a fancy frame on the wall at the Dubliner. They put whatever the hell they want on the walls, whether it's a beat up Irish flag or a portrait of JFK. The floor is dirty and the chairs are old and worn out, but for me this feels much more real. There's no huge crowd of dowtown jocks and meatheads with their bimbo girlfriends trying to feel Irish. Instead you will find your regulars and locals (real locals not just a name) having a pint and a good conversation. The only criticism I would have is that sometimes they don't have the usual popcorn machine going if there's not a lot of people there and I am always game for some popcorn with my Guinness, especially since there is nothing else to eat there. The music is always good, but more so on wednesday night. There is good chance you will see me there then because the group that plays that night is excellent and brings the perfect atmosphere for a night of "drinking and blackguarding."
google avatar

Bananie P.

Yelp
I've yet to have a night at the Dubliner that wasn't excellent. Several of my best pub tales begin with, "We were at the Dubliner..." and more often than not, directly following, the chorus of listeners cries, " I love the Dubliner!" I am hesitant to even review it as stellar since I'd be loathe to see if overrun. But in the spirit of friendship, it is fantastic. Dark and cozy and perfect for a night when you really want to enjoy the company of your favorite friends, and make new ones... Shots of jameson, pints of guiness and of course, an irish lassies favorite, Magners Cider (Bulmers to those who've been across the sea on the emerald isle) Add the music and trivia to the list and note that the gents who play are usually amenable to a request or two. Cash only, so don't forget to stop @ the ATM before you get there... Unless of course you love yourself a $2.50 service fee.

Yelp
I've only been to the Dubliner twice, but will be returning often... And, of course, the reason is the live music! Who doesn't like listening to Irish jigs and drinking songs? My first impression was it doesn't have the physical ambience other pubs do...but again, the music is the great thing about this place. There is a parking lot, but it's pretty small, so get there early on the weekends.

Yelp
Looking for something fancy? This is not the place for you. Looking for a perfectly poured Guinness, a dram of Jameson? The best live Irish music in town? Then this is THE PLACE. There is nothing fancy about "The Dub", just honest folk hanging out, having a laugh together at a working mans pub. My kind of place.

Yelp
Good service. My friend enjoyed his full pint of Guinness. But please save yourselves and do not order the Guinness fish and chips. It was just a big old pile of doughy, greasy covered fish. And the chips weren't chips they were seasoned fries. I couldn't eat any of it I even tried to scrape the dough off but the fish was so greasy it was unpleasant to the taste. My friend put a bite in his mouth and actually then spit it out into a napkin. Very disappointed but again many stars for service
