The Dungeon is hands down my favorite bar in NOLA. The decor is awesome, the ambiance is great. There's an excellent selection of drinks. The entryway through the alley is really cool, and the bouncers are very friendly. Can't recommend this place enough if you are a fan of metal!

If you're into a rock/alternative vibe, I highly recommend it! This themed bar has an edgy, almost Rob Zombie-esque aesthetic that adds to its dark and mysterious allure. I initially wanted to visit just to see what it looked like inside, and it did not disappoint. I ordered the Witch’s Brew, which was a solid drink, and the overall setting made for a unique experience. The space is on the smaller side, which encourages conversation—if you don’t mind yelling over the music! One of my favorite parts was the dungeon seating , which added to the immersive atmosphere. If you visit, don’t forget to check out the second floor—I almost missed it because I was a little nervous, but it was worth it! The courtyard is also a must-see; I absolutely loved it. While I see The Dungeon as more of a one-and-done stop for myself, I’d definitely go back if someone I was traveling with wanted to experience it. Overall, a must-visit for anyone who loves rock, alt, and a bit of the eerie! 🤘🏽

Very cool place to stop for a quick drink. Gotta walk thru a dark alley to get to their door. No photos allowed but I snagged one of the outside. The bar tender was nice. Very dark and laid back with Gothic style decor.

Google
A fun little small sized dark lit bar with good vibes, nice music and a nice, quaint outdoor area.

Google
My new favorite bar in the world! It has the best bartender I've ever met. Emily is absolutely amazing. She is very social and interesting to talk to. She really takes great care of her customers. I had an amazing night. Definitely a place to go if you like chains and awesome 2000's metal rock. Oh and don't forget to look around at the art.

Jason M.

Google
Amazing bar! Loved the gothic metal atmosphere. Bartender was awesome and made great drinks. Would definitely come back again and highly recommend it.

Google
This is a dive bar with a dungeon facade. Two floors with a variety of decor and three separate bars. There were no real activities here just tourists gawking at decor. There was a bouncer type at the door giving the appearance I was entering a real play zone. The staff were friendly. The drinks were light and cheap. The music was a good mix of rock and metal. My only excitement was finding a Giger copy on the wall.

Google
Visited last night, out of town, was looking forward to it. There are no photos allowed & usually don’t read signs right off the rip in super dark bars, my apologies. So I took one and apologized on the spot. I was obviously excited if I’m taking a photo of the decor. The bartender was absolutely rude after that. Asked something snarky like “unless you buy me a shot” which what? I still tried to redeem but they couldn’t be bothered & were visibly annoyed. Was in there maybe 5 minutes tops. It cost nothing to be nice to people.

Yelp
Okay, this was my first time coming to The Dungeon, but my friends and even my husband have been here many times. Operating since 1969, The Dungeon is an icon in the circles I orbit. It's a tiny metalhead bar with some outdoor space that has a small water feature, an outdoor velvet-lined coffin; you know, for photo ops and a small dancefloor area. I don't drink alcohol but I did get a Sprite, which was very good. But the reason why I feel compelled to review this place is how the literally saved the day. We were on a girls trip and spent about half an hour here consuming our drinks, taking pics and chatting. We left around 10-ish on a Friday night and headed back to our Air B&B. About a third of the way back, one of my friends realized she left her purse at The Dungeon. The attentive door staff found my friend's purse and kept it safe until we were able to arrive and claim it, thus saving our girls weekend! I thought The Dungeon was a cool joint to begin with, but they really propelled themselves to superhero status with how they saved our trip. Bravo The Dungeon- well done!. I'll definitely be back next time I visit NOLA!

Yelp
Maybe this used to be a cool vampire bar, but I guess not anymore. Nothing about it is vampire except for the coffin in the courtyard that you can take a picture with. The doorman was rude, and half the bar was closed--apparently the top part is only open Thursday-Sunday, and there isn't any information online that would let you know that, so I was disappointed that I only got to experience about 300 sq ft of the bar.
google avatar

Yesenia E.

Yelp
Everytime I come to New Orleans I always visit this place. There two stories. No cameras or recording allowed inside. The drink selection is very limited. The major of items I asked for they didn't have. So we had to stick to generic over priced drinks that were watered down. The service was slow. The music was nice. Seating was extremely limited so you're standing shoulder to shoulder with people.
google avatar

Rick C.

Yelp
I must see when in New Orleans. If you like good rock 'n' roll and that spooky atmosphere the dungeon is the place to be just know no pictures or video allowed. Drink prices were not bad either.
google avatar

Alayna S.

Yelp
Bouncer was incredibly rude and annoying. Drinks were meh. Also very small inside... Not an actual goth bar, feels veryyyy tacky. While you're in NOLA, if you want the real deal, go to the Goat!

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday evening when it was dead so can't say I was able to get the full experience that the Dungeon may have to offer, but had an overall good time - mostly because the people around were friendly. Everything about this spot is narrow so if you're not into dark, crammed places, why are you here? They don't have a menu so it's kind of up to you to know what you want. I don't drink so I asked the bartender to concoct a mocktail for me - she made a combo of orange and pineapple juice. My friend got a glass of Rumple Minze mixed with Sprite. Together I think our bill came out to be $12 which is not expensive at all compared to the New York prices we're so used to. Apparently there's an upstairs but it was closed as they didn't have enough traffic to open the extra area.
google avatar

Loretta W.

Yelp
We did not eat here, but we drank and danced and laughed and had the best time ever! If you love loud metal music in a dark, dungeon-like atmosphere, then this is for you! Our bartender was super fun and friendly! Great service! No photography allowed inside!
google avatar

Gabriela M.

Yelp
Unique hidden dive bar, with a jukebox that only requires $1 per song. It's a very small, narrow and dark bar. No pictures/ recordings allowed, which we found strange. Restrooms are a joke- don't expect much. The upstairs bar area was closed. The bartender seemed cool but then she screamed at a guy that was either attempting to take a picture or recording at the bar. I get it, pictures are not allowed but she was very rude and said a derogatory name to the customer.

Yelp
For years this bar was my favorite.2floors loud music fair prices great staff and some of all types from quarter.Went there 6months ago and left in 10 minutes.Wont go back. .Really one floor. You have broke my heart
google avatar

Bill S.

Yelp
Fun dive bar with great jukebox and bartender. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed my birthday night cap drinking excursion that started with let's stop for one and left after ????? Getting back to hotel was interesting. Can't wait to go back this December for my next birthday.
google avatar

Yelp
We came to The Dungeon expecting a unique and edgy experience given its long-standing history in the French Quarter. What we got instead was a thoroughly miserable time thanks to the two bartenders on the lower level who were, frankly, absolute C's. There are rumors of the place closing or the son of the owner taking over. Whatever the case may be, they really need to get their act together because this place will not last with that type of service. After reading other reviews, it is clear my experience was not unique. People have been calling out the same behavior from these bartenders for well over a year, and yet they are obviously still there. And to top it off, my vodka soda tasted like water. Those dumbasses are lucky they walked away with a tip after giving nothing but attitude, ignoring customers, and serving crappy ass drinks!
google avatar

Elliott B.

Yelp
For what this place is, it does it pretty damn perfectly. I mean, if you like hard rock and metal and dim lighting and skulls, this is your jam. This was one of the last stops of the evening, so I was feeling pretty dang good and got into the metal jams more than I normally would have. Like, YES. The ceiling is so low that someone warned me I was about to hit my head as I was jumping around. Wheeeeee. They don't serve food and the booze selection is limited. It's not about good selection - it's about skulls and red lighting and ROCK AND ROLL. Service will probably laugh at you if you request some fancy drink here. Just guessing. Will stop here again for sure.
google avatar

R L.

Yelp
Cool place but they really penny pinch and watch the size of the poor of the drink. Like really. Drinks r weak
google avatar

Cat F.

Yelp
A dark dive bar down a very narrow, red lit, creepy alley. At first you think it's tiny, then you realize it's pretty deep but narrow and also has another area upstairs. It was very easy to find. It's historic, here since 1969 (lol)
google avatar

Linda B.

Yelp
Oh my God, I love this place so much it speaks to me. I can't wait to go back to New Orleans so I can go there. It's my favorite favorite place love the selection of music -the darkness. atmosphere all of it
google avatar

Suzanne A.

Yelp
Better bar than most bourbon street places. Great juke box to chose your music friendly bartender service. No pictures allowed so you need to check this out on your own.
google avatar

Pamela M.

Yelp
I went "back in the day" when the Dungeon did not open until midnight. I think their hours were midnight to 8 AM. Typical of NOLA, drinks were pricey and once upstairs, you were elbow to elbow - it was tiny and always packed! You could not fit a stage in the upstairs area, and I know there was not live music. I enjoyed the super-divey atmosphere and the punk rock vibe of the era at the Dungeon. It was dark, crowded and it was difficult to see the kitschy items displayed in nooks in the walls. I was really happy to visit the Dungeon, even though we did not make an entire night of it.
google avatar

Amy W.

Yelp
Well this place was interesting. Haha. We were expecting more of a super natural theme. It's really more like an S & M spot. There are two levels. The upstairs was blaring death medal. The drinks were mediocre. No pics allowed. Meh. It was fine. Probably depends on what you like. It really wasn't for me.
google avatar

Ken C.

Yelp
It was an interesting spot mainly for the experience. There were lots of tourists, and everyone seemed to just want to enjoy the atmosphere. This isn't really a place for a full meal, but great for a few drinks and chatting with friends. The theme is dungeon-inspired, with dark reds and blacks everywhere. Our bartender was from Mississippi and had a great sense of humor--had me laughing!

Yelp
i thought this place was pretty lame. we came on a friday night and it was busy upstairs but not so busy downstairs. and i think the reasoning is because the downstairs bartender totally sucked! there were dirty cups left all over the bar and she spent SO much time at one end just talking to a guy. and then she would disappear to the back area (but i could still see her) and then come back "out" and talk only to this one guy. seriously after 40 minutes of us sitting there, she made her way down asking if we wanted drinks. my boyfriend got a whiskey coke and i got a whiskey sprite. and she was like "what, a sprite? that's so weird, are you sure?" and i was like "...yeah?" so she goes to make them, brings them back and does that bartender straw taste test in front of me and says "it's just so weird, i had to try it. and it's gross" before pushing it in front of me. like, okay thanks for your opinion. The decor upstairs was cooler, but there was very limited space/seating and you're not allowed to take any photos inside. so all things considered, it was totally nothing special and not worth going to. like, net negative experience.

Yelp
My girlfriends and I had had this bar on our list of must go-to's bc my fiancé who has a history with NOLA stemming back decades recommended it. We were super excited to go here. Unfortunately, it sucked. The bartender was a huge b. I wanted to know if they had any signature cocktails and she said "We're a dive bar" in this snarky ass tone. Girl, f'n duh. But you work in a touristy locale and most bars, even dive bars, have signature cocktails. I ordered two vodka tonics with lime, a Diet Coke and sparkling water. The Diet Coke was all water, our drinks were shit. She had a f'n attitude when I said to keep it open and said they hold onto the card. Girl...I wasn't born yesterday. No need to talk to me like I was. She said it like I've never been in a bar in my life, like she was schooling me. Get over yourself. I work in the industry. I am sensitive and appreciative of servers and bartenders and tip accordingly. This girls f'n attitude left me wanting not to tip at all. I almost wrote on the receipt because we heard her complaining about tips to a patron. She was so snotty and I suspect was drunk/on something... Whoever manages/owns this bar needs to do some re-evaluation of their employees. If I treated customers the way she did at my bar and restaurant, I'd be fired. Don't recommend. I spent $41 on two vodka tonics, a nothing Diet Coke that wasn't a Diet Coke because they haven't switched their syrup bag for their gun and was too interested in acting like hot shit to other patrons and ignoring us. Don't be a b to people who do what you do and do it better. Maybe you'll get tipped more than a cent.

Diego M.

Yelp
Pictures aren't allowed here. A great dive though, if a little expensive. It's small and cramped just like a dungeon should be, but there's still enough small nooks and crannies to sit in. A nice courtyard as well.
google avatar

Megan N.

Yelp
Horrible - over rated . NO PHOTOS ALLOWED .. why nothing special .. waited 10 minutes for a bartender and no one showed up - walked out. Oh bouncer is rude and no personality .. i will not be back
google avatar

Genesis M.

Yelp
Service great for a bar. No food. And this is definitely rated r so the ambiance matches.
google avatar

Monica C.

Yelp
We go to New Orleans once a year and always have to drop into this dive. I love the decor and the vibe to go chill and have a drink. If you haven't been it's a great totally NOLA place to visit.
google avatar

Joanna H.

Yelp
Personally i don't understand the no photos policy inside here since there's nothing particularly risky or abnormal about this bar other than the spooky dungeon decor. Not to say it isn't a good bar with cheap and tasty drinks, but the no photos policy really puts a damper on things especially when you're not a local and want to make memories with your friends. Overall it's a cool experience and i definitely recommend stopping by and checking it out before your next adventure in new orleans.
google avatar

Bob V.

Yelp
I'd heard about this place and had to check it out. I bet it's more fun when it's crowded! Definitely would go again. No photos inside but worth the stop.
google avatar

Colleen D.

Yelp
A cool metal/goth bar with a great jukebox. A fun entryway down a spooky dark corridor led to a long bar; we sat in a both inside of a cage. Stayed for drinks and a few songs, unfortunately we were there on a weeknight and missed getting to see the upstairs so we look forward to another visit. If you're used to this kind of bar, you'll feel at home.
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
My husband and I went in on a Sunday night, and I think we just hit it at the wrong time. When my husband asked the bartender about the history of the place and shared what he had read, she had no idea what he was talking about. She totally blew him off. I found one of the secret doors within the bar, but the space it led to was dark and not being used that night. There's supposedly another secret door that I did not find, and it's unfortunate that the bartender wasn't willing to engage us in the mystery of this place, because it would have made our visit a lot more fun. It's a great themed dive bar, so worth a stop if you come across it. Just be prepared for an experience. Or not.
google avatar

Craig M.

Yelp
The dungeon is the best bar in the French Quarter! The bartender and the bouncer were the best ! Showed us a great time and took care of us where most places don't care .
google avatar

Ellery D.

Yelp
Great ambience! Will definitely be back, and will bring out of town friends with me. Can't believe, as a goth, this was my first time here. Try the Key--a delicious, refreshing frozen whiskey daiquiri. Really hit the spot on a hot night, and only $7. If you want to take it into the courtyard, the door guy will deftly pour it into a go cup for you.
google avatar

Lisa D.

Yelp
Loved this bar so much that I visited twice on my trip to New Orleans. I love a good themed bar. The music selection on the jukebox is pretty perfect.

Harold T.

Yelp
They kill!! Real Nola vibes. Creeps galore! lol A loud place to argue. Bartender and the decor go well together.
google avatar

Alli C.

Yelp
We love the Dungeon! No photos/videos, good music and reasonable drinks for NOLA. Bartender offered great referrals for late night food and waited on us quickly. Will always return!
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
I'm giving this place two stars simply for the decor it's a very unique gothic themed bar with the worst cocktails ever. They were overpriced and I've never known a screwdriver to taste like cough syrup and wouldn't be able to drink it. Another kicker is New Orleans is notorious for not wanting any pictures taken inside their stores and restaurants kind of odd but ok so it's really hard to give reviews on places when you can't back them up with pictures all a person can go by is experience and word of mouth. Maybe beer would've been better but I don't recommend mixed drinks. This place is super small inside so there's not many places to sit so with that being said I wouldn't suggest this place for large groups of for people who like mixed drinks.
google avatar

Senia O.

Yelp
No PHOTOS Yup no photos or selfies However we definitely had the chance to sneak in in before being told NOPE! Drinks a little strong The bartender (girl) needed maybe a longer skirt as ,her but showed and she shines us every time she had to reach over for a drink in the cooler not
google avatar

Alistair K.

Yelp
This place is tiny. That was the major issue. It's down a long hallway and through a courtyard and that was all very cool, but the rest was a major letdown. I would have enjoyed the decor and ambience if it wasn't so claustrophobic. The small bar was all full and there's not much space to wait near it in the hope of managing to get a drink. We waited fifteen minutes and the bartender didn't even glance our way before we got tired of being crammed in and left. It was a bummer and I didn't see enough about it to look enticing for another try next visit to the city.

Chris M.

Yelp
Dark and grungy and it's a vibe! Hidden and kinda spooky but worth it for sure. Lots of NOLA history and locals are drinking here.
google avatar

Christopher C.

Yelp
Totally chill vibe here, as long as you like gothic/heavy metal decor, a hard rock/metal soundtrack, great drinks (try "The Key" (to the chastity belt)) its a great whiskey slush perfect to combat the New Orleans heat. Get a shot of SoCo on top to really round it out. The decor is fantastic, theres a great little courtyard to smoke right outside. The Vibe is really stellar, and though I would classify it as loud (on the weekends for sure) its not so loud you cant have a decent conversation at the bar. Which is really nice given the atmosphere. You dont get that too often. Shout out to Drew and Aaliyah, two amazing bartenders I had an absolute blast with! They have pretty great merch too. Im Enjoying their zip up hoodie right now and got my friends and I homegrown hot sauces. They have drink cozys too. All of it bares their emblematic dungeon maiden mascot. Highly recommend. Say hi to the fish for me (in the baphomet skull tank, because this place is metal as hell) But do the place a service and dont take pictures and video. Its plastered all over the place and the doorman will actively remind you. They arent jerks about it either. The people complaining on here were obviously problematic about it. Its incredibly common, especially in the french quarter for boutique shops and establishments to enforce such a rule. Be respectful. Put your phone away and experience it for yourself first hand. There are plenty of photo opps in the courtyard and entrance.

Yelp
Love the theme, but the service is meh. We were there on a cold, slow night and the Bartender was MIA when we walked in. Very limited seating at the bar and nowhere else inside. As we awkwardly waited for the bartender to return, more people showed up (many just left) She finally returned, checked on customers around us who had drinks while failing to notice her new (sober) customers who had none. We finally got her attention, got a drink and bailed. I love a dive, but not one where the bartender is so inattentive that I'm begging to be served (and laughed at when I ordered a simple 3 ingredient drink). I can't imagine trying to get a drink there on a busy night.
google avatar

Starr S.

Yelp
My favorite right on my Nola trip! great music, reasonably priced drinks, the vibes are right. I absolutely love spooky / horror themed stuff so if you're into that and rock / metal then this is your place. Only thing that could be better is that it needs more seating
google avatar

Lexi M.

Yelp
So I would probably never come here and certainly not at night. But because of the restrictions, they were open during the day. Our friend was telling us about this place and how he loved it, but it's a tad out of our comfort zone. He wasn't wrong. But I will say when you're in New Orleans you have to soak it all in. The entrance to get into this bar is a very narrow alley and then it opens up to a small courtyard area. When we got there the upstairs was closed so it was only the small bar open. We were told we had to order our drinks and then drink them outside. I got the key to the chastity belt frozen drink and it was delicious! The inside is very spooky and full of sassy pictures, but now I can say that I went.
google avatar

Jesse A.

Yelp
Very unique and historical place. I highly recommend you visit while in New Orleans. You will find it tucked away in the French Quarter.
google avatar

Wally Z.

Yelp
Super cool entry down an alleyway. Grungy, goth like vibes as soon as you enter. Dark red lighting definitely fits with the vibe they're going for and I dug it. Came here for their famous Key to the Chastity Belt drink which is a whiskey-based slushy drink. Absolutely delicious. Loses 1 star for the strict no pictures allowed rule, and a silly $10 minimum credit card charge. This actually changed our intentions, as my partner and I initially planned to share a drink since we were calling it a night. Ended up ordering a 2nd drink to meet the minimum so it was a slight inconvenience but all in all it was worth it for the Halloween-bar like vibes that the bar offered. I'd come here again if we were to return to New Orleans.
google avatar

Darci K.

Yelp
I love a good weird unique themed place and this hits!! It was memorable that's for sure. Service was great, drinks were good!
google avatar

R M.

Yelp
I was promised that there would be real vampires there and the Dungeon did not disappoint. Great upstairs bar for chilling and downstairs bar for ambiance and being elbowed in the throat. Upstairs bartender from Paoli, PA was great and poured nice doubles. A "should visit" in the Quarter. And for those saying it's overpriced, maybe pick up a newspaper some day - everything is.
google avatar

Martina C.

Yelp
Blah. This is not only NOT a metal bar anymore, according to my girlfriend, who loved it prior for playing real metal and being a totally rock and roll bar, but the drinks are meh, expensive and the place has a weird layout that makes it feel cramped and unbreathable in places. I had an Espolon Tequila and soda but even finding decent tequila was a stretch. HARD PASS.
google avatar

Gurpreet L.

Yelp
Such a great gem in the middle of the hussle and bussle of New Orleans! My partner grew up in Lousiana and has mentioned The Dungeon to me a few times over the years. I finally had the privledge of visting when we came down for Mardi Gras and I can say that it didn't dissapoint. The vibes are amazing! Although I had a blast, there a few things I want to mention so that you're not surprised. 1. It's a small bar! It's two stories but there isn't a lot of seating and it can get super packed very quickly. Thankfully, they are very good about limiting the amount of patrons so that we aren't packed like sardines. 2. As every review mentions, you can NOT take phots/videos inside. Please be respectful of that rule! I don't care how badly you want to post on Instagram, please dont. 3. Getting in and out of the bar requires you to go through a very tight alleyway. When they are limiting the number of people inside, there is a line that forms outside in the alleyway which means you have to squeeze by people as you enter/exit. It's super important to keep in mind if you don't like tight spaces. Thankfully, I didn't have to wait in the alleyway line but if I did, I would have felt pretty clausterphobic.

Yelp
The Dungeon is an experience you have to have when visiting NOLA. Back in the day, the Dungeon opened up after most other bars had closed. What's the inside like? Just read the name, but don't let it scare you away. Great drinks, great service, great experience. Let your piercings and tats show cause everyone else is showcasing their artwork and you'll fit in just fine.
