Best Affordable Food in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Triangle - Eater Carolinas

"Breakfast and lunch items at the Durham Filling Station are as easy on the wallet as they are tasty. Consistently rated one of the best burgers in the town, they range in price from $5-$9. Other options include a fried bologna sandwich ($3.50), a variety of hotdogs and sausages ($2.50 - $6.50), and an all-day biscuit menu ($1.50 -$4.75)." - Matt Lardie

Google
Durham Filling Station is a classic greasy grill serving your cookout staples with fun, ingredient-bending twists. This is the sort of place where the food tastes exactly how it looks; burgers and dogs a la carte, curly fries, mac & cheese with brisket on top. The setup is pretty barebones, you order at a window and then either take it to go or have a seat one of 3 picnic tables under the awning next to the main body of the restaurant. The Filling Station really embraces simple, classic American diner food with a wide array of toppings -- it probably won't blow your mind (I don't think that's their goal) but you'll definitely be happy you came. The sweet tea was great too.

Google
One of my favorite hidden gems in Durham! This place has amazing food and is so affordable. I love that they now have Sat hours. Def check it out! The food pictures is a veggie burger with farmers cheese fuelled onions and pickles, curly fries, and peanut butter pie.

Google
Absolutely LOVED the Junkyard Dog! Just the perfect pile of garbage pilled on top of a great spicy dog. Service was solid and the outdoor shaded seating area was nice. These are the kind of spots that there certainly aren't enough of anymore.

Google
Not five stars in sense of being some fancy, high end type place, but it has great food made fresh to order at a reasonable price made to order. It is like a continuation of the old Wimpys with some improvements like seating added outside. Counter order. Wait for food. Hole in the wall type place but great burgers and dogs made to order. Love the addition on curly fries. Very friendly service. They even take credit card now.

Google
We grabbed a BLT and a spicy dog earlier this week - delicious!! We'll be going back to try more sammies soon. We also picked up a special sweet potato pie and a Reeses pie for Thanksgiving. Both were so good; our housemates couldn't agree on which we liked best!

Google
I ordered a ham n' egg biscuit. The biscuit was fluffy, delicious and golden. The ham and egg were cooked just right. Great place for breakfast. Can't wait to try burgers.

Google
Fantastic food, but what’s even more refreshing is the people. Alex sat and spoke with us and made us feel like family. Do yourself a favor and TRY THIS PLACE!!!!! Support local. You won’t be disappointed

Lora

Google
Farmer's burger with Bacon Fig jam!!!! Insanity! Best curly fries ever. Egg and cheese big enough for two meals.

Yelp
This is walkup to order, outside picnic tables for eating, and limited parking. You walk into a covered space that's pretty much the line. The menu is above the ordering window and the lady working there patiently answered all of my questions about the different names and what they meant. I ended up with the Junkyard burger which is pretty much everything but the kitchen sink! There were several homemade pies on display and they looked amazing. I took my burger outside to enjoy at a picnic table...it was a bit overwhelming and I had to unhinge my jaw a bit to get a bite. It was very tasty but I think I'll try something else next time....and definitely get a piece of peanut butter pie!!!

Yelp
Another Durham classic burger joint that just DOES IT RIGHT. The Good: Thick juicy burgers with all the helpings you may want. If you want a good, classic, all-American burger, with a sense of nostalgia of a father grilling it from the backyard, this is it. Also, the French fries are BOMBBBB!! The Bad: The Mac & Cheese was not my fav... I thought it had a weird aftertaste but hubby seemed to have liked it. &Just the Tip: We didn't ask for any adjustments since it was our first time here, but next time we will ask for the burger to be cooked pink in the middle! Taste : 8/10 Price : $ Rec. to my friends? : Yes Consistency : 1st time Presentation: I mean just look at the pictures ... doesn't your mouth just water immediately??!? Parking : Decent amount of parking spaces in the lot.

Yelp
Food is terrific. Love the menu choices. Servers are super helpful and try to accommodate all needs but can be a challenge when they are super busy. Only, hesitation is the limited parking.
google avatar

Yelp
I know it's fun to like it, but I didn't like it. After waiting in a hothouse, I got a burger in a paper sack. Now what am I gonna do with it? There's only two tables out back (pandemic) and they are occupied. So I gotta drive home. It is a very good cheeseburger, yes.
google avatar

Yelp
Take my money! Take my money! Possibly the best classic double cheese burger that I've had in the Triangle. When I say, "classic", the kind where it's fresh, warm, and every bite taste like burger heaven. There's only two picnic tables at the moment for outdoor seating but I was able to take up one for myself (since I went early for lunch). I sat there enjoying every single bite. I couldn't done without the curly fries, although it was delicious as well! I can't wait to return to try other items on the menu. A+ customer service with good energy, quick service, a good amount of parking, quality food, simple menu! What more can you ask for? I highly recommend it if you're in the mood for a burger.

Yelp
Wasn't as impressed as reviews led us to believe. Burgers were over cooked. Seemed like it was a 75/15 ratio. Not juicy at all. Fries right out of bag were soggy and not crispy.
google avatar

Yelp
Recently found this place, wish we had found it sooner! Awesome food and really nice staff. Will definitely be a regular customer.

Yelp
The Durham Filling Station is a true gem. I am a huge fan of the fried bologna sandwich and the junkyard dog. Everything on the menu is super affordable and soooo good. I'm happy that they now have Saturday hours since other places in this location were limited to only weekdays. Highly recommend checking this place out!

Yelp
I actually gasped when I realized the fries were curly fries at The Durham Filling Station, and then I tasted them, and I realized this place was going to be a new part of our Durham rotation! Best. Curly. Fries. Ever. I'm not eating a lot of meat these days, so I opted for a veggie burger with pimento cheese and caramelized onions as my main, and it was good! Not mind-blowingly good, but a good veggie burger. My husband, Matt ordered a double cheeseburger, and he said it may be the best burger in Durham! (He would probably give The Durham Filling Station a 5 star rating; I'll have to go back and try a real burger some time) Another must-try is the brisket mac and cheese--it's ultra creamy, and Matt loved the brisket on top. ALSO, those onion rings are not to be slept on. I only tried a few bits that snuck into my fries, but they were top tier. Overall, excellent hole-in-the-wall friendly vibes, great food, and fair prices. We can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Filling is an understatement. The food was big all across the board flavor, food quality, and portion. Had the junk yard burger oh man couldn't finish it all still amazing and saved for later. The hot dogs dog house could never . The brisket Mac and cheese is the real deal . Even had the pleasure to have lunch with the chef he was amazing and shows in the food. I'm a hot dog fanatic so I've found my Durham location.

Yelp
Great food! Tried the burgers, fries and biscuits. Staff was very friendly. All great!! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Jacob T.

Yelp
The burgers are good but not great. All the toppings that are normally free cost extra here, so it starts to add up. I liked the Arby's tasting fries and dip they make for them. Overall for what you get, it's too expensive to be a repeat spot.

Yelp
I've read good things about this place, so we finally popped in since I had a discount from a local organization. It's kind of nondescript and easy to miss unless you're specifically looking for it. It doesn't look like much -- just a shack with outdoor seating -- but they have solid, filling (yes, it's in their name) food. We ordered two breakfast biscuits, onion rings, banana pudding, and soft drinks. I waited around inside for the order while my wife grabbed slots at the outdoor picnic tables. Minor quibbles were that there's not a lot of room in the ordering area (several unmasked people milling about) and that we didn't get any utensils. I had to come back in and ask for one and was given a fork for the banana pudding. This isn't very close to our house in South Durham, so that would probably prevent us from coming back more often.

Yelp
Great service and the food is amazing! Would love to find out more about the Ramen night. Got a lot of RN's at Duke going to try this place out after they saw our CB's & Onion Rings today!

Chantell L.

Yelp
Listen, Wagyu burgers with truffle oil and aged cheddar are cool but they can never compete with the reserved and modest beauty of an all-American burger. That my friends is what you will find at the Durham Filling Station. No frills but plenty of thrills. The menu is simple: hotdogs, burgers, fries, onion rings and rotating desserts. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and it oozed with greasy, salty Americana goodness. The fries were curly and well seasoned and prices were excellent. Service was fast, friendly and to the point. I don't live locally but if I did this would be a regular weekly stop.

Yelp
Everything that I tried were delicious, but my favorites were the Bacon Cheeseburger and the curly fries Y'ALL, as a carbs connoisseur, I declare that The Durham Filling Station has the most perfect curly fries in Durham! I've been thinking about them since Face coverings must be worn to go up to the counter to order! They have a few outdoor picnic tables available. You can also call ahead and they'll bring your order out to your car! Eat the burgers fresh in the car or take it home!

Dave C.

Yelp
Best burger in Durham. No inside seating. It is worth the inconvenience. The burger actually tastes like something special. Great curly fries. I will be back. Very limited hours. Eat in your car and it's perfect. A great find.

Yelp
The Durham Filling Station is in old Wimpy's spot and they do biscuits, burgers, hotdogs, and more! Their hours are 7am-2pm Monday-Friday and 11am-5pm Saturday. I'm so happy they're open on Saturdays! I've been a couple of times now and tried a bunch of stuff: bacon cheeseburger, brisket burger (a special), shroom and Swiss burger, junkyard hotdog (has a bunch of stuff on it), veggie burger, brisket Mac and cheese, bacon pimento cheeseburger with Bull City Pepper hot sauce (a special), and curly fries (absolute PERFECTION). I loved everything except for the veggie burger (it's decent for a veggie burger but all the other burgers are much better IMO and I'm also a meat eater as you can tell). IEverything is way under $10 (most of them way under)! If you're craving a good burger or hotdog at a good price, this is it.
google avatar

Racheal W.

Yelp
My cheeseburger was awesome. Reminded me of drive-in burgers growing up. If you're on this side of town looking for a low key, quick lunch spot. Check it out!!

Yelp
There are plenty of burger options in Durham but Durham Filling Station will definitely be one of my most-recommended. Can't beat the price of these classic American burgers and hotdogs (and don't forget their curly fries!) We've had their bacon cheeseburger, double cheeseburger, junkyard dog, and their brisket mac n cheese. I loved the junkyard dog--it contains basically everything as far as toppings go and they use a bigger, a little bit spicy hotdog for it. The burgers are good and filling. Have yet to try their biscuits so I'll definitely be back for those--it's just that their hours are kind of odd and awkward during weekdays for working people (So Saturdays are my best bet to find a time to come here). The second time we came here we had a coupon from my boyfriend's Offline Durham membership so we ordered more than we intended (added the brisket mac). The lady in the counter that day was very sweet and eager in answering our questions about the menu. Every other Thursday night, apparently, their chef does a special ramen night which can be ordered online via e-mail. I'll update my review about their ramen once I try 'em because that got me very intrigued! Overall Durham Filling station is a good find for the quality, quantity, and price of their food. PS: this is a take-out only place. I think there's very limited outdoor seating.

Donna M.

Yelp
Was in the area for a doctor appointment and came by to try. Had hot dog, onion rings, and soda. Really good and pretty reasonable pricing. No inside seating. Just some covered picnic tables outside. Looks family owned and food cooked to order. You stand and wait for your order. Will come back if I'm in the area.

Yelp
I've tried stopping by this place 4 times because someone suggested it. However they are never open! 4 times seriously!
google avatar

Jenna W.

Yelp
Overall- I would come again. I just wish they had longer hours Price- very reasonable What we get Cheese burger and bacon cheese burger- simple. Fresh. This place give me in and out vibes. Curly fries and French fries - crispy and tasty without being too salty. The thousand island dressing they give with the fries is what makes them Ambiance - easy to miss it if you're not paying attention. Parking is limited but there is some. Great for take out. I think there are some benches but pretty limited Service - solid. A little slow but it gets pretty busy. You can order ahead and just pick up

Yelp
Cute local place. The curly fries were great. The farmers burger was as well. Nice and quick service

Gail G.

Yelp
Delicious big home made biscuits (big enough to contain fried egg, cheese and sausage patty!). Breakfast sandwich was yummy. Excellent coffee. As a matter of fact, I left part of my second cup out over night and, just to see how it would taste, I reheated it the next morning- still good. No blah after taste. You can't say that about most coffee. I will be back when in Durham to try lunch! Oh yeah, did I mention the strawberry bread pudding? YUM!! Just a suggestion to help the staff: check out their menu on line before calling in your order. Knowing the options before you call will help to speed up your order.

Ryan C.

Yelp
I went here when it was called Wimpys and run by a nice old couple. Prices are a little higher, but the burgers still taste amazing
google avatar

Norma G.

Yelp
Best burger I've had in ages! Ordered a double bacon burger with local farmer's cheese with a side of onion rings and both were spectacular! They butter the grill when toasting the buns, the bacon is thick and perfectly cooked, burger is juicy, onion rings are oh so good. Service was lovely and they gave me water for free. 3 picnic tables for folks that want to eat right away (we did). Will definitely make the drive from Raleigh when the next burger craving hits.

Yelp
I was looking for a place to get something to eat and stumbled upon this little off the beaten path place. Pulling up to the building I wasn't excepting much; it's not your standard dining experience. The full menu was posted on a sheet of paper in their front window. There are only a few picnic tables placed outside for eating; no indoor eating area. I decided to order the Junkyard burger that came with a cheeseburger, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles. The burger was also supposed to come with chili and slaw. I also ordered a side of curly fries. While I was waiting I was offered a sample of the fresh made vanilla custard they use in their banana pudding. I have to say it was actually really good considering I don't usually like custards. My food was hot when I got it, so no complaints there. The burger was great although it didn't have the toppings I was excepting. I then looked at my receipt and found they had rung up the Farmers Burger which had the house aioli, jalapeños and bacon onion jam on Texas toast. It ended up being a really great burger, and I think I enjoyed it better than if I had gotten the other burger. The curly fries were hot and crispy and the potion was enough to feed 2-3 people. And the staff was very nice. They are only open Wednesday through Saturday from 10-2 which makes it difficult to get back here, but I definitely plan on going again anytime I am in the area.

Yelp
This walk-up burger stand is in the former Wimpy's building and the new owner has done a great job filling those big shoes! The menu is pretty similar, with burgers, hot dogs, fries and such. The food is excellent as far as I have sampled. Small burgers that are very moist and tasty onion rings and fries. They have a rotating cast of homemade deserts. My favorites are the Reese's pie and dirt cake (which comes with a gummi worm). Service is walk up and there has been great adherence to physical distancing rules. There are even some shady spots to rest in. They also do curbside service.
google avatar

Joel J.

Yelp
This place did not disappoint. The burgers and tender and juicy. I had the brisket cheese burger, it was tasty as it sounds. My wife ordered the brisket Mac& cheese and a spicy hot dog all the way. In all our meal was fresh, hot and tasty! Would definitely be back

D A.

Yelp
I always like to check for reviews in new places and came across Durham Filling station. It was great and exactly what I look for when I want a good local place. The staff is great and made great suggestion in their hot dogs. Will definitely be back whenever I come back through town
google avatar

Yelp
We've eaten here twice this week. First for lunch-Good Burgers, Hot Dogs, and Fries. 2nd for Breakfast-Good Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Biscuits. Friendly service. Great prices!
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
Great spot for a quality burger and fries. Super friendly service with fair prices. Nice outdoor seating area to enjoy your meal too. Check this spot out!
google avatar

Seana C.

Yelp
The Filling Station is my new go-to when I want a good burger and fries with no fuss. I called ahead to place my order and by the time I arrived it was ready to go. I got a double cheeseburger (huge!) and my husband got a bacon cheeseburger. We also got some curly fries that come with the best dipping sauce! I originally had ordered the pinto beans but they were out of them so they offered me a free dessert instead, I went for the Reese's pieces pie which was super rich and delicious. All of the staff were super nice, the food was ready quick, and it was delicious, a perfect combo!

Fizzy L.

Yelp
Umm this may have been the best burger we have ever eaten. The bun was buttery but held up to the burger. Patty was juicy and flavorful. We added caramelized onion and they were perfect. The staff were so friendly too.

Hilarie S.

Yelp
This place was great!! They had build your own burgers and everything was delicious! We had a double chili cheeseburger and the chili was perfect. It was meaty chili that soaked up the bread just right in every bite. The onions were mild and not overpowering and the mustard and slaw blended very well together.. the other burger was a bacon cheeseburger burger with crisp lettuce and all the regular toppings! The pickles on this is what made it for me!! 10/10 I will definitely eat here again.
google avatar

Tanith T.

Yelp
Great comfort food spot with mouthwatering stacked cheeseburgers, crisp tender fries and homemade desserts. Classic comfort food and not too expensive especially for the quality. Definitely recommend.

Ty H.

Yelp
I ordered the farmer! It's delicious! Wish the bread was toasted and thick like Texas toast so it wouldn't much up but it was still good never the less....I will be going back!

Arielle H.

Yelp
Today was my third time visiting and the food is consistently sooo damn good! I'm pretty simple but I loveee a good burger and I'll make that 30 min drive just to get one from here. Don't forget to add their curly fries and special sauce on the side and I promise you won't be disappointed. The customer service is also pretty darn good, all in all a great place to eat at!
google avatar

jerry m.

Yelp
Great bacon cheeseburger! Crispy curly fries also very good. I'd like to see some directional traffic flow signage. All of he patrons were courteous and mindful of keeping their distance, so it was fine. Wish they were open in the evenings as it is rare that I can make the lunch hours. I'll be back if I'm anywhere near at lunchtime.
google avatar

Addison C.

Yelp
This is the first time I've been to the filling station 10/10! The food was as good as the customer service, they were all so nice and gave us great suggestions on what to eat. If the banana pudding isn't homemade could've fooled me, it was so good!

Laura H.

Yelp
So happy to have tried this place. The curly fries are to die for and the grilled cheese was the pinnacle of comfort food. The staff is so friendly and the whole experience is so easy. It doesn't hurt that prices are incredibly reasonable. Highly recommend for when you're craving fast food like comfort but 10x better taste!
google avatar

Jill S.

Yelp
No frills, simple, and incredibly delicious burger spot (and legit hot dog) with two picnic tables for outdoor seating. Onion rings and curly fries on the side make for a great indulgence. Will definitely be back.

Philip R.

Yelp
I was on a road trip and needed a quick fill up. I got a burger and it was absolutely among the top 5 burgers I have ever had in my life. So good. I may go out of my way to come here if I ever find myself within 100 miles of Durham again.

will s.

Yelp
It's pretty average to be honest but still decent compared to a Jimmy's or other food stops like this

Tameeka W.

Yelp
I just came for the first time today and i can definitely say it was good! Friendly staff and great food can't beat that! Definitely will be coming back i got the burger and curly fries and it did not disappoint!

Rita P.

Yelp
The Vege burger is the best I have ever had.......,,,,a great place where everyone has s delicious choice
google avatar

Dennis T.

Yelp
Food was excellent, service was fantastic, and prices are fair. If you are not a Durham native, put the address in your GPS to help you get there. There is no apparent signs at the place and it can be easy to miss. Quite a gem once you discover it though.

Paul R.

Yelp
This hole in the wall was an amazing find. Delicious food combined with great customer service equals a very happy belly. Certainly will be back
