Durham Ox

"A 300 year old pub in a sleepy hamlet; in summer, head for the lovely courtyard. Menus focus on honest, homely cooking, with everything made on-site; choose a blackboard special – often game or seafood accompanied by something ‘wild’. Cosy bedrooms feature original brickwork and quarry tiling." - Michelin Inspector

Great spot serving really good food. It’s better than your average country pub for sure, the price reflects this, but it’s well worth it. Rightly so in a lot of well established food guides. There is real food knowledge behind the menu and execution. Their Wine list further reflects this appreciation for good food. There are not many places in the area which hit this level. Good to see it can be found in the North!

I had high expectations before arriving, and they were completely exceeded. From check-in to check-out, every detail was taken care of flawlessly. Our pool cabin was a true haven, offering breathtaking views across Yorkshire. The food was exceptional—high-end cuisine with a laid-back country vibe. The staff were not only helpful but also incredibly knowledgeable, adding to the overall experience. Loved every moment of it! I will be coming back- Thanks x

My wife and I spent 2 wonderful days at The Durham Ox. We stayed in the Pool Cabin which was fantastic! Private garden with a massive hot tub, huge sleeping and relaxing areas with all the amenities you could need. And 2 toilets! Great views and so peaceful. We also had excellent breakfasts and dinner at the pub too. The service at the pub (more a high end gastro pub) was superb, the food fresh, piping hot and prompt and the whole atmosphere was cosy and friendly. We even had our 2 dogs snuggled down by the table with us. Nothing was too much trouble for anyone working there and we are most definitely coming back. Excellent value for money and we cannot recommend highly enough.

Visited with high expectations - left knowing we would not be returning. Went early doors and opted for a mains sharing plate that included a complimentary glass of prosecco that we are still waiting for ! Would have been welcome as it was £12 .65 (including service] for a bang average glass of Pino Grigio Blush. The food was good but nothing special and the final bill most certainly was not good value

Had a really good 1 night stay in the green room. Rooms are really quite big with all the amenities and a small lounge area. Restaurant is very good with good choice of food especially on the specials with very good and staff are also very good and attentive. Breakfast choices are good with a small selection of cereals, pastries etc. would recommend

Lots of character and really great food.. the plating is a bit “old” sometimes, but there is depth and quality which is what matters … good wine list too

Ĥad an excellent stay here. I knew we were in for a good time when, on arrival, I saw the complementary Yorkie bar left in our room! The room was very comfortable (we were in a room called "Field", it did have low beams but we managed to avoid banging our heads! Bed was great which ensured a good night's sleep. Bathroom was spacious with quality toiletries. The evening meal was excellent and service was perfect. We had a lovely stay thank you and shall return.

After seeing a friends food i thought I need to go there - it was specifically for the surf and turf platter - despite booking there was a wait of an hour but atleast they were honest as I expect they don't want to compromise the food. It was good and despite thinking we wouldn't eat it all , we did and I could have eaten more steak! If you love fishy too then it's a must! The car parking space was hellish though and the weather/ frost and ice didn't help - i would go again but in better light. Pub and outside area was lovely looking.

Yelp
This is a restaurant/pub with rooms. You can have an informal meal in the bar area or dine in the restaurant. Cooking is classic contemporary and very good quality - more a gastro-pub style. The food was excellent but the lack of wine knowledge was interesting. The waitress tried to convince me that an Italian 'ripasso' wine was 'exactly the same' as a South African Bordeaux blend we had ordered but was out of stock. Bizarrely when I said I wasn't happy with that the waitress insisted she was right. I work in the wine industry and know the huge difference there is between them and we ordered a different wine. This same waitress also filled my glass to the brim of the huge glass (using half the bottle!) so we had to ask someone else for different glasses as we required the wine to be poured properly. I take wine seriously and wanted an expensive bottle poured correctly There is accomodation here that ranges from standard comfortable pub style to full blown suite. We went for the luxury option and had a cottage to ourselves. It was like a country cottage but with a higher level of comfort. The bathroom was huge with a jaccuzzi bath and sumptuous bedroom. Overall we had a very nice time - the wine incident was the only blip. The full English breakfast was as good as I have ever eaten too.

Yelp
The service was horrendous , completely ignored to be honest. The food was very ,very average and therefore very over priced. Positive points? Good wine list ( if you can get served) and the toilets were clean.wouldn't bother trying it to be honest , just seemed very badly run.
