The 21 Best Restaurants In Chinatown - London - The Infatuation

"The Eight is a big, pine-heavy, canteen-style, Hong Kong-inspired teahouse that has an air of Muji about it. But you don’t come here for another LED diffuser, you come here for eggs. The whipped volcano egg—a whirling, swirling, mound of eggs with curry on the side—is as aesthetically pleasing as it is flavour-wise. Other things, like roasted meats and noodle soups, are decent enough, but you’re better off going with the moist, butter-laden, pineapple bun." - jake missing, heidi lauth beasley, rianne shlebak, sinead cranna

Are These London Restaurants Worth The Hype? - London - The Infatuation

"The Verdict: It’s by no means a total flop, but it’s certainly not worth queuing for. The Eight has all the tells of a restaurant that’s done the rounds on TikTok: an anaconda-ish queue outside, phones poised on almost every table, and the distinct sense that you must have missed something as you pay the bill. The Hong Kong-style teahouse on Shaftesbury Avenue isn’t a dud, but its overly snapped aesthetic and swirling volcano eggs with curry aren’t good enough for you to pitch up outside either. The signature pineapple bun is light and sweet, the roasted meats aren’t up to par with other spots in Chinatown and, for the price you’re paying, you can do a lot better for the most part." - Sinead Cranna, Rianne Shlebak, Jake Oliver

The Eight Review - Review - Chinatown - London - The Infatuation

"You can tell when the internet has a restaurant in its clutches and The Eight is the perfect example. More often than not, especially in the evenings, there’s an impatient queue snaking down Shaftesbury Avenue, full of white knuckles gripping trusty screens waiting to get a table at this casual cha chaan teng. This is a stan crowd. The Hong Kong-style teahouse's pineapple buns and volcanic eggs have done the rounds on TikTok, so people are happy to wait in the name of what gets us all going most: content creation. But for all the hype, The Eight is just fine. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Once inside, this Chinatown spot feels like a Muji mood board come to life. Pine wood, neutral tones, and an all-round clean aesthetic reigns supreme. In the daytime, this makes it a peaceful venue for a swift lunch as there’s little to no queue midweek. The constant crowd—some of whom are Balenciaga-clad, others who are much more B&Q—seem to think similarly. While a few tables immediately have cameras zooming into curry, upstairs is mostly a heads down, chopsticks up, in and out within an hour kind of place. The basement, with two booths big enough for a double-page spread photoshoot, feels like somewhere you can settle into. Given the menu is over 150 dishes deep it’s worth having a game plan, particularly as some of the food can be very average. You’ll see the whipped volcano egg—a whirling, swirling, mound of eggs with curry on the side—on most tables, and it’s as aesthetically pleasing as it is flavour-wise. Pineapple bun with butter is a sweet butter-smearing delight if you’re down to get your hands dirty. The best of the bunch is the heinously saucy baked pork chop and fried rice in curry sauce. It’s not a light lunch, but at least you don’t have to wait around for it either. Food Rundown Spicy Wonton In Red Oil The sesame-heavy sauce that these ping-pong ball-sized dumplings are in, is the star—oily from chilli but nutty enough to have a slurp. The wontons themselves are generously filled with pork, and together it’s a winning combination. Pineapple Bun Although there are a few pineapple bun options on the menu, we’d recommend the most simple. The sugar-crusted bun is a big, bulbous thing, sliced off centre for a slap of cold butter to sit inside. It comes with a pair of disposable gloves for you to tear and smear the butter into the sweet dough but, frankly, we’d just go at it. It’s perfectly baked and a sweet vehicle for sauces. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Signature BBQ Rice A signature dish can be a misleading thing and, unfortunately, this char siu pork and fried egg on rice is just fine. The mustard greens bring a bit of something but it’s not the most tender, nor the most flavour-packed meat. It’s a bit meh. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Volcano Egg Curry Beef Brisket Probably the restaurant’s most popular dish and a mostly satisfying one. The artfully swirled volcano egg and rice tastes of, well, egg and rice. The beef brisket curry is mild and easily spoonable. It’s cool-looking comfort food. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Crunchy Garlic Chilli Ho Fun Crunchy, garlic, and chilli is an enticing combination of words, but these noodles under-deliver. The crunch is a cursory handful of chopped crispy onions, and the garlic and chilli are nowhere to be seen. Disappointingly bland. Baked Fried Rice With Pork Chop In Curry A cheesy, meaty, carby puddle of a dish. The kind of thing that could keep you full and leave you sofa bound for 48 hours. Light? No. A protector against cold weather and SAD-induced thoughts? Absolutely. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch" - Jake Missing

Came here with my family for lunch and honestly it was the best restaurant in London we have visited by far! The staff are incredibly friendly and the waiter gave us so many great recommendations and guided us through the very extensive menu! 😍✨ We ordered about 8 dishes and they all came out to our table within 10 minutes, such fast and incredible service! The food was insanely delicious and the portions were huge! I even had to pack half my meal to take home. The atmosphere is amazing and a big shoutout to the staff who were so kind and friendly! Can’t wait to come back here and try all the other things off the menu 🥰✨ thank you so much!

Overall a very good experience, though not quite excellent. The food was solid and clearly well prepared, with authentic flavours and generous portions. A few dishes really stood out and tasted fresh and comforting, especially if you’re craving classic Hong Kong–style cooking. Service was polite and efficient, although it felt a little rushed at times and not particularly warm. The atmosphere is casual and lively, which suits the restaurant, but it can get quite noisy and a bit hectic during busy hours. While everything was enjoyable, nothing quite reached that “wow” level that would make it unforgettable. A bit more attention to detail, whether in presentation, service, or consistency across dishes, could easily push this to a 5-star experience. That said, it’s definitely a place I’d return to for a reliable and satisfying meal. Good quality food, fair value for money, and a solid choice for Hong Kong cuisine in London.

Lovely restraint in Chinatown with large selection of food, great atmosphere, will be back to try more food! Huge selection of dishes, we started with the turnip cake, tasty and not oily, would recommend! The pineapple bun is delicious, it’s big as well, the sugar crust on the bun combined with the butter is amazing! Then we tried the three roast BBQ with rice, came in a big portion and the roast are all cooked nicely, I like the addition of the mustard greens to balance meat and the rice. We also tried the shrimp roe lo mein(noodles) with wonton, the shrimp roe noodles are quite flavourful and the prawn wontons are juicy. The garlic sauce choy sum surprised me, it’s a simple dish but they added crispy seaweed on top which made it so addictive. Drinks wise, the red bean coconut tasted great and also you can never go wrong with a milktea. Overall,I would definitely come back to try more food! The service is good, they have more seatings downstairs, but on weekend might have to queue a bit. The restaurant is very clean too.

Came for lunch on Boxing Day and had some nostalgic HongKong-style food here. The curry fish balls had got a nice kick of spiciness and we enjoyed the mixed sauce Cheung Fun (rice noodle rolls) a lot.

One of the best Hongkong-Style Café in Europe. They serve authentic Hongkong dishes. I even came here 3 times in the span of a week because the food were simply THAT good. We ordered the pineapple Bun with sliced salted butter in the middle (best eaten warm), Hainanese chicken rice, homemade silken tofu with seaweed and mushroom, pork in barbecue sauce and omelette rice. But the champion is the shrimp wonton soup. Thin and silky wrapper, juicy crispy shrimp filling and hearty broth… I still dream of this to this date. They offer free infused water, but don‘t skip their hongkong milk tea or lemon tea. Service is quick and immaculate. Resonably priced. Would highly recommend this!

Delicious Hong Kong style restaurant with a wide variety of choices. The volcano egg beef brisket curry and rice was amazing and egg was done perfectly! Kids really enjoyed the noodles and the hainanese chicken rice and baked tomato pork chop rice were also really tasty. Note that the baked pork chop rice will take a little longer to arrive compared to the other dishes so maybe give that a miss if you’re in a rush. What stood out the most was the exceptional service from all the staff! Waiters were polite and friendly and the lady who made our drinks was also super nice. It’s the little touches that make the difference! We will definitely return as there were many other dishes we wanted to try.

We're a group of 4, walk-ins only. There was a long queue on a Saturday dinner around 6pm, but we managed to get in and seated after waiting for 10-15minutes. The srrvices was amazing, very attentive crew and welcoming vibes. It was busy and bustling. The food is okay and worth the price (we have tasted better food of the same cuisine). Food came quick but not rushed, the beverages however are amazing. Overall, it was satisfactory. ❤️

A Hong Kong styled restaurant with similar service vibes with a well spaced out interior. We tried: 🍞 Salt & pepper tofu 🥢 Sweet & sour chicken 🥓 Honey roast BBQ pork 🥓 Crispy pork and rice 🍜 Beef ho fun 🍚 Jasmine rice 🥣 Purple potato sago with tapioca We enjoyed all the meat dishes. The sweet and sour was very easy to eat. The honey roast BBQ pork was tender and thinly sliced. The crispy pork (siu yok) was beautifully cooked but I felt the ratio of rice to meat wasn’t quite right. The tofu pieces were big, golden and crispy but the exterior lacked flavour. The flavour came from the condiment toppings. The dessert was our favourite. Not too sweet, creamy with chewy pieces of tapioca, I will be back for this!
