How to Eat Like a Hallmark Christmas Movie Character in Maine, Connecticut, and Vermont - Eater Boston

"If you take a snowy hike in Acadia, maybe you’ll slip on a wet rock at Thunder Hole and twist an ankle so an attractive townie has to carry you back to the adorable Elmhurst Inn for slightly safer Thunder Hole activities." - Stasia Brewczynski

We stayed here for 3 nights while seeing Acadia. It was a last-minute reservation, and I'm so glad that we were able to find this gem. The location is great, walkable to downtown and close to a grocery store for all of our last-minute needs. They served a fun breakfast each morning, and it was nice to try out the different Maine treats (blueberry French toast crumble was amazing). The best part of the stay was Cheryl! We really appreciate how personable Cheryl was! She did a wonderful job managing everything during our stay and made us feel welcome before we even arrived by checking in during our travels to see about our arrival time. She had great tips for places to eat, things to do, and the best ways to navigate the area.

We had another wonderful stay at the Elmhurst Inn last week. Cheryl is the consummate host. She makes sure that we have everything we need to make our stay comfortable. The morning breakfasts are amazing! We love being able to have a choice of the two offerings each day and everything comes out delicious and hot. None of that pre-packaged junk that other B&Bs are starting to move to. Our room was comfortable and spacious. I highly recommend the Cadillac Suite! The Inn is perfectly located with plenty of parking. Just park your car and walk around town to the many restaurants and shops. It’s also just a short walk to the Village Green where you can catch the free Island Explorer to Acadia National Park. We highly recommend taking the Island Explorer to Acadia as the parking is pretty much impossible to do in season. This was our second visit to Bar Harbor and the Elmhurst Inn. We will definitely be back! Thank you, Cheryl!

We had a wonderful stay there last week. It’s very centrally located, yet on a quiet street. You could walk to all the restaurants and waterfront. Cheryl, the host, was friendly, engaging, and made us feel at home. Every morning we had a superb breakfast that kept us full till dinner. It is very close to Acadia National Park. Highly recommended!!

This inn was fantastic. It’s in a great location with off street parking and within walking distance to all of downtown Bar Harbor. Cheryl, the manager, was awesome and very welcoming and friendly, even offering suggestions of things to do in the area. The breakfasts served in the morning were fresh and tasty and more than I expected from other stays at similar inns. The room we stayed in was quiet and comfortable. I would 100% recommend The Elmhurst Inn for a stay in Bar Harbor.

Google
This Bar Harbor Inn is a cut above ALL the rest. They are smart to stay open all winter charging very reasonable $$ for stays. (We all come back!) The breakfasts are healthy with good choices, great Carrabassett Coffee. Cheryl is a pro and treats everyone as an old friend. I only visit in the spring and fall, but this BandB has some old world charm with modern updates and top flight service. You can't miss (even if, like me, you DO miss the old days when Bar Harbor was a close knit seaside community of summer 'cottages' and a busy wharf.) Oh, well. Things have changed, but Elmhurst is as great as can be!

LOVELY 2 night stay here this week. Our room was spacious & cozy. We had incredible service from the moment we arrived until departure. Cheryl runs this place so well & is a delight. She gave us great off season recs & felt like an old friend. Our breakfast each morning was fabulous as well!- Even accommodated my dairy free needs. 5 star stay!

We had a great stay at the Elmhurst Inn; the room was spacious, the bed was very comfortable, and the breakfasts were beyond good. Sheryl is a rock star at the front desk! Incredibly helpful in getting us oriented to Bar Harbor and with local restaurant recommendations and park tips.

Google
Our stay at Elmhurst was wonderful. We stayed for a week in February and Cheryl was tremendously kind and helpful throughout our stay. I'd give her 10 stars if I could! The breakfasts and afternoon treats were fabulous, and Cheryl always had great recommendations for things to do/see. The inn provides umbrellas, board games, and other items for guests. There is plenty of parking, and the location is perfect for walking to the grocery store, pharmacy, restaurants, and shops. We stayed in a room with a fireplace and really enjoyed it in the winter. Staying at the inn also provides free access to the local YMCA which has everything you might need for general workouts. Would absolutely come back to Elmhurst any time of year!

Yelp
For our first time in Maine, we stayed in Hulls Room at the Elmhurst Inn. What a fantastic experience. Breakfast each morning offered two entrees and we always chose one of both to share, solo, or fight over. We loved all the options. We had 6 breakfasts and none repeated. Breakfast came with an entree, fresh fruit, bread, fresh juice, coffee/tea. I never left hungry, that's for sure. Our room was spacious. We had a nice king sized bed that was cozy. Our shower was nice and hot, which was welcome after a long day of hiking or biking. We could control our room temp so we had nice cool nights so we could snuggle with the comforter. Each day starting at 3pm, snacks were served in the dining room which was often homemade cookies, iced tea, chips and salsa, or nuts. A little sweet and a little salty. A coffee and tea station was available 24/7. Cheryl was helpful with her knowledge of the area. The place was spotless and the employees worked well as a team. Such a great experience.

Yelp
Truly an amazing stay for our 1st wedding anniversary! We stayed on the top floor in Hulls Cove, the room was comfortable and so cute with a great balcony to relax on after a long hike! We had amazing information from Cheryl on hikes and in town recommendation's for some great food. Even better though? Cheryl put on an amazing breakfast which really helped start a day filled with hiking in Acadia. Coming back to the most comfortable bed, delicious tea and cookies between 3pm-5pm makes an extremely welcoming atmosphere. Proximity to town is also a plus, getting into the center of things takes about a 10minute walk. I would highly recommend staying at The Elmhurst Inn for a cozy and comfortable stay.

Yelp
We just came back from our 2nd stay here and it was equally excellent! We stayed in Sand Point this time on the 3rd floor. It was a smaller room but had enough of what we needed and was a bit cheaper overall. The breakfast is still one of the highlights as is Cheryl, the innkeeper. She's pleasant and funny and a great person to deal with while on vacation. Looking forward to coming back again!

Yelp
What an excellent find for lodging while in Bar Harbor. The house is quaint and tastefully decorated. check in was easy and the owner was always around and very welcoming and helpful with recommendations and local infromation. Our room was on the second floor, no elevator so be prepared to carry luggage up stairs. Bedding was excellent. Comphy Sheets that I have looked into buying since I have been home. Our room had king size bed with, two overstuffed chairs, a fire place and private bath with shower. Plenty of parking and located within walking distance of downtown Bar Harbor. Breakfast is included in the price of the room and was so nice. You had a choice of entree each morning (either egg and meat dish or sweet, pancake/waffles). Breakfast also came with coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and specialty items each morning (croissants, smoothies, speciality breads, fresh fruit). Excellent start to the day. The girls who served us were extremely friendly, polite and efficient. Great experience.

Yelp
A beautiful old building in the heart of town, with charming rooms and a delightful host. Breakfasts are ample and delicious. Worth every dollar.

Yelp
This inn is wonderful! My sister and I stayed in the Beehive Room. We thought the room was larger than it looks in pictures - she and I had enough space for our things and to maneuver around each other. Cheryl and the staff are incredibly welcoming and friendly. The inn has some quirks you'd expect from an old building - creaky stairs and such - but it all adds to the charm. Breakfast is excellent and Cheryl has helpful resources (like hiking maps) and recommendations for guests. This inn would be our first choice for a return trip! Can't recommend it enough.

Yelp
We finally made it back and this time we brought our family! We stayed in the spacious carriage house out back. This was perfect as it had 4 bedrooms and a sitting room in both the up and downstairs. Cheryl is still an amazing host and our stay reminded us how much we enjoyed being at the Inn.

Yelp
I love this cute place. It is very well kept and the hostess is so knowable and loves to fill you in. Breakfast is served every day and is so so, a bit dry for my taste but overall good. Pillows are so so, bring you own if you can. The location of the Inn is great and short walking distance to most things. There is a welcoming porch in the front perfect for people watching and chatting. I would come back here.

Yelp
Cheryl was very welcoming! The inn was very clean and mask rules were respected (and hand sanitizer was provided! We stayed in the beehive room and it has a gorgeous sunlight over the bed which was romantic and charming. Close walk to everything close by (8 min to the waterfront) and only 10min to see the sunrise at Acadia. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Perfect location to reach all of downtown Bar Harbor - - with off street parking!!! We stayed in the Echo Lake Suite which is located in a separate building next to the main dwelling. There are two bedrooms, each with air conditioners. The bathroom is accessed through either bedroom. There is a sitting room up front with a television, mini fridge and a Kuerig coffee maker. Wifi is provided at no extra charge. Breakfast is available each morning in the main house and guests are provided two choices. If you are on the go and can't sit for breakfast, they will make you a to-go breakfast. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate and cookies are always waiting in the main house dining area. Cheryl is a fantastic host and has the pulse of the town - - if you have questions about Bar Harbor, her insight is invaluable!

Yelp
We stayed at the Elmhurst Inn in late April, just before the real start of the tourist season, and would definitely try to stay their again in the future! The Inn itself is beautiful - timeless New England cottage, but with every modern comfort we needed. Our room was spotlessly clean, and well-stocked with towels, blankets, heaters if needed, suitcase racks, iron and iron board, etc. We loved staying in the Bass Head room and sitting by the fireplace after dinner and a day of hiking in Acadia. Breakfast was delicious and served each morning in an adorable and well-lit sunroom that overlooked the cherry blossom tree near the driveway (which was in bloom while we were visiting!). The true standout at the Elmhurst was our host Cheryl. She was there with anything we might need, and she was kind, professional, and friendly. There was a list of local Bar Harbor restaurants and breweries that were all within walking distance, as well as tide and sunrise/sunset info for our adventures in Acadia. During our stay, I needed to mend a small rip in clothing from hiking, and Cheryl was on-hand to provide a sewing kit. I will be telling all my friends that when they go up to Acadia and Bar Harbor, they have to stay at the Elmhurst Inn! Thank you for such a wonderful stay Cheryl!!

Yelp
I'm going to be the first Yelper to talk about the Elmhurst Inn. So many awesome things to say! 1. The Manager is super helpful. Went out of her way for us multiple times to help us have what we needed, etc. I have celiac so have to be strict about gluten and cross- contamination and she was knowledgeable and took the time to check ingredients for me. I appreciated this so much and it made me feel very comfortable! 2. After experiencing this B&B, I honestly don't know why I'd stay in a hotel again - lol - the B&B feel is so warm and inviting. 3. Our room was super cute and spacious (we stayed in the Cadillac Suite). 4. The breakfasts!!! There's this cute breakfast patio that overlooks the gardens - little tables for 2 with white wicker furniture, fresh flowers, cute little salt and pepper shakers - I just loved all the thought and detail that went into making it the cute and inviting place that it is! 5. The breakfasts were DELICIOUS! We were so spoiled! Yummy quiches, waffles, pancakes, omelettes, and more. Always with a first course of fruit, yogurt and breakfast pastry. I'd highly recommend the Elmhurst Inn. Quiet, quaint, and beautiful, just like Maine!

Yelp
When researching my trip, I called the number of places and ultimately settled on the Elmhurst based on the location. I have never been so glad that I picked a specific place to stay in my life. I've always kind of shied away from bed-and-breakfast, I'm not really sure why. I have to say this experience has changed my entire outlook on B&Bs and I will be searching for them from now on in my travels. The experience I had here was just unbelievably amazing. Cheryl, the inn manager, Could not have been any nicer. We ended up actually adding an extra day to our stay because the experience was so great. The breakfasts are top notch and the service throughout the entire stay was A+ . It was truly a pleasure staying here; I felt as if it was warm and welcoming and I was staying at a friends house. If I ever find myself back in the bar harbor area I will definitely be staying here again.

Yelp
I love this place so much!! It's gorgeous, the rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated with antique furniture. I love how historic the place is too (originally from 1878). I stayed in three different rooms and I loved all of them. One of them had a little reading room/sun room which was awesome and the other one had a fire place which was functional and they were so thoughtful that they left a fire log and matches there for me so I made a fire and it was so romantic! Everything is thought of at this place. They have fresh flowers everywhere, hot water and a selection of teas and also coffee available at any time, mini fridge... Anything you need is there. The dining room for breakfasts is absolutely gorgeous and full of sun and the breakfast is DELICIOUS (all the guests were saying that, not just me). Their quiche was so good I had to ask for a recipe! And it's all served in a beautiful classy way, it's a real experience! But the best part about it was honestly Cheryl, the inn keeper. The NICEST person you'll meet and she went absolutely above and beyond to help me with anything I needed. I didn't have a car there and one day I couldn't find an Uber/cab to take me to Cadillac mountain. Cheryl immediately offered to take me, drove me all the way up in the afternoon and then picked me up in the evening. Unbelievable. You don't see that kind of kindness in this world anymore. Thank you so much, Elmhurst inn, I had the BEST time and I will be back soon again!

Yelp
A lovely stay! Charming decor, clean and comfortable rooms, friendly and helpful staff, and the breakfasts are AMAZING!! This B&B is an easy walk from almost everything to do in Bar Harbor. Cheryl and her staff were so helpful. Whether I needed help choosing a menu item (there are no wrong choices here!) or finding my way around, they were happy to help. I was traveling with family on this trip, but would have felt very safe staying here alone. I can't wait to go back!!

Yelp
We stayed here October 11 and 12. We love to stay in Bed and Breakfasts and Inns, so when we did a search for our first trip to Bar Harbor, we found this jewel. The Elmhurst is in a great location, within walking distance to all of the shops and restaurants and beautiful harbor. Upon our arrival, we were greeted and shown around by a young man who worked there. Our room, Frenchman Bay, was beautifully decorated, a large newly renovated bathroom, with a fireplace in the bedroom. Breakfast is served between 8-9:30 and you get a choice of two entrees. The first morning we chose the tomato, cheese quiche with a side of sausage links accompanied by a bowl of melon drizzled with a raspberry puree. Amazing!! The second morning we chose the bacon, cheese, tomato strata accompanied by half a baked pear topped with vanilla yogurt and granola. Each layer of the strata was so fresh and light, with crumbled perfectly cooked bacon on top. We sat on the beautiful porch one late afternoon and had a glass of wine. One morning I awoke early and grabbed a blanket and a cup of coffee and enjoyed the crisp autumn air on the porch rocking chair. When we return to Bar Harbor one day, we will definitely stay here again.

Yelp
What a wonderful BnB. We had the nicest time. The Inn is super clean and cozy. The manager was so sweet and helpful. We will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
This is a long one folks. This review is late but still well deserving and needed to be posted. My bf and I have been to Maine twice before bc it is one of our favorite summer getaways. This time we decided to stay in Bar Harbor. It should be noted that whenever we stay somewhere in the northeast we always look for classic B&B's with the lovely Victorian vibe to them. The Elmhurst Inn just might be the best one yet. The Inn is beautifully cared for by the manager, Cheryl (who also made the best cheesecake cookies I've ever had AND printed the recipe for me!) Breakfast has a sign up sheet for the week with multiple options. Bf and I always chose different things so we could try them all. Honestly a very delicious breakfast. Sit down service with fruits, parfaits as starters, different breads, then mains also coffee, teas, juices, pastries. Our room was on the top floor. Lovely sunshine coming in the morning to wake you. Balcony. Great bathroom. Super clean. Couldn't ask for more. The staff is extremely helpful. They also organize a social hour! I understand most guests have jam packed schedules but it's a nice offering that isn't really offered anymore so we took the opportunity and partook in it! The porch is fantastic. We sat outside during a lovely summer night with a bottle of Rosé and it was so peaceful. The inn is located in the perfect spot. A very short walk to the center of town and just far enough away so that you don't get all the noise at night. This is exactly what you look for when you stay at a classic B&B. I honestly can't wait to go back.

Yelp
This is a lovely place! A 5 minute to down town Bar Harbor and the docks! A 10 minute drive to Acadia and Cadillac Mountain! The hostess here goes way out of her way to ensure that you have the very best experience! This is the only place I will ever stay when I visit Mount Desert Island! Also the breakfasts here are incredible! Best bang for buck hands down! The Victorian house is beautiful! I can't say enough great things about the Elmhurst Inn!

Scott W.

Yelp
This place was terrific. Great location about 2 blocks from downtown. Far enough to miss the noise and people and close enough to walk in 5 mins. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Breakfast was amazing.
