10 Best Brunch Places in Dublin | Condé Nast Traveler

"Opened in 2009, this award-winning gastropub specializes in serving comfort food with a modern twist. The décor eschews traditional pub motifs for something sleeker, with light woods, bright colors, color-blocked bookshelves, and sculptural accents creating a vibe that’s part-mod café, part brand-new airport lounge (in a good way) with inventive food to match. Make a reservation for weekend brunch and head in with a few pals—you can't nosh on prawn tacos, a full-Irish, and a pork roast all by yourself, now can you?" - Sandra Ramani

Horrible Customer Service Visited this establishment with a friend for tea and a few drinks plus a meal. Unfortunately, all they cared for was our covid certs. They went on to welcome other customers who came after us and gave them menus. They made us wait for more 30min. We had to literally grab them so they could give us a menu. Even thereafter they left us. We again had to grab them so we could order tea and a drink. The service was extremely poor. They made us feel like we were aliens, rejects, second class citizens or things that do not belong. Never felt this in a century and I doubt I could ever set a foot here or recommend this establishment to any person even the worst of my enemies. I regret setting a foot here.

First flight out of Stockholm on a Sunday morning arrived here at midday for a Sunday beef roast. It's the perfect start to a day sightseeing. You've got to order before Friday if you want this, it's for four people and even though I played safe and ordered medium / well, it was great food and came with the trimmings and a lovely gravy. For £75 you get lunch for four and a bottle of wine. Seriously thinking about taking another trip to Dublin to start the day here again.

Google
Good pub with a good atmosphere. They appear to have a great selection of drinks and lots of people were ordering many weird and wonderful concoctions that looked great. The Guinness was good too though, which isn't always the case in busier bars. Bar food is also available and their sharing platters are amazing. Will definitely revisit.

Well The Exchequer is definitely a pub I would visit again in a heartbeat. We had 3 chicken mains and chips that we all agreed were lovely and drank the place dry of Peroni. The waiter Paddy and all the staff were really pleasant and the food and drink was delicious. Great location, especially on a sunny day with plenty of seating, although you do have to book. Stayed from 5pm until about 11pm and was one of the best nights out I can remember. We were told we could stay as long as we wanted but almost had this cut to 2 hours because of a slight mix up, but they were vary facilitating in the end. I would recommend the Exchequer to anyone, great location, great drinks and great food and great atmosphere. P.S: That was not Darragh you spoke to on the phone or with the dreadful shirt 😅, and there was no Facebook review group with 7000 followers... That was my friend Ian O'Dowd. Apologies, he gets a bit carried away when he's let outside. 🤣 I did however make the original booking. Thanks to all the staff for having us. Darragh, Ian, Matt and Stephen

Google
An unpretentious bar that serves high quality (and award winning) cocktails. I had the smokey old fashioned and it was an absolute dream, no wonder the friendly and knowledgable staff so heavily recommended it. The touch of maple syrup makes such a smooth drink, sweet but not overpoweringly so. I can’t wait to go back and try more. At €9-12 for cocktails the prices are in line with other middle-high end bars and is very fair value for what you get. Will certainly return.

Google
Central location, good service, reasonable prices (for Dublin). The onion ring batter left something to be desired but the fish was good. My family enjoyed their pasta and veggie burger too.

Pub in Dublin centre. Unlike many other pubs in Grafton streets whereabouts, it’s not the one for tourists, many natives come here to have a pint. Many drinks, few dishes on the menu though delicious. Moderate prices!

Yesterday I faced the horrible customer service in the Exchequer. We booked a table outside and we were sit at the edge table near the entrance. It started to rain and even though we had a cover from the rain, because of wind the rain splashed to us and on the table few times. We asked a manager to change the table because we saw a better table next to us but we were refused with the reason that that table were booked by others. Though when we did booking I didn't see the opportunity to choose the exact table. We talked to a manager few times asking to be flexible and change our table because we didn't feel comfortable there but nothing changed. I won't come to the place where the customers are not respected and served as they mean nothing.

Yelp
Surprisingly not busy at all on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon. We had our choice of seats out of the entire bar and extra attentive service. I believe the full brunch menu is offered 12-4 on Sunday. The fish and chips were the second best I've had while traveling abroad. The fish had these bigger pieces of salt on it (yum) and was perfectly fried. The mushy peas were also very good and I loved the hint of mint. The chips were... chips, just okay. The tartar sauce was also very unique, almost a tartar/mustard sauce, and it went well with the fish. The ambiance is very hipster, but I enjoyed the lunch and would visit to try more cocktails.

Yelp
Just arrived in Dublin and wandering around lost, we went into the Exchequer because it was the only place we found in the area with fish and chips. Service was good and the fish and chips were OK; perhaps the fish could have used a little more time I. The fryer as the coating was almost white in color; but, they were cooked and the meal tasted good. Exchequer seems to have many awards; so, perhaps this is the way to fix fish and chips!

Yelp
Came in on a Sunday night around 830pm, four of us were seated promptly. Two of us got burgers (a steak and a lamb), one got the fish and chips, and the last got the rack of BBQ ribs. I got The lamb burger and it was very tasty. It had a nice kick to it, not sure from what, but it complemented the tzatziki sauce nicely. The portion was just right, left me satisfied but not overly full. Everyone else was happy with their meals as well. Our waitress was pleasant and efficient. Was a nice place for a quick bite to eat. Would recommend.

Yelp
The Exchequer is really two establishments in one. Both center on brilliant creative drinks, especially on local whiskeys, gins, and even rums. My favorite - gin, basil and lemon. The first establishment is a lounge consisting of two large rooms of lively young cocktail drinkers. There's lots of comfortable seating and the vibe is upscale. Friendly mixologists. Definitely 5 stars. The restaurant is a small, comfortable space, largely isolated from the enthusiastic crowd . Lovely manager, but vague wait staff. The food was good but Inconsistent. The mussels were tender and buttery but the sauce was over-salted and too heavy for the dish. The rib eye steak was tasty but not tender, and the peppercorn sauce was good but not layered or complex. Nice that they had a vegetarian entree, but it was a melted mess of cheese and pasta for 18€. I think we would try Exchequer for dinner again, but maybe stick to the burgers and fries. Definitely 3 stars.

Yelp
Delicious meal. Incredible meat and sides. I loved the roasted potatoes especially along with the meat. The staff was great and the bottle of wine include delicious.

Yelp
Mixed feelings. Pros: Nabbed a great table after we walked in, excellent timing. Nice cocktails Cons: Volume level of music made it difficult to hear each other. With an order of three cocktails and one coke, the coke was brought over last, which I thought made no sense at all. We left after one round as the music volume was actually turned up as we were deciding our next drink. We went to the Library Bar next door where fun chats were had. The Exchequer is grand for an early evening cocktails before it gets too noisy.

Yelp
One of my highlights of my previous visit to Dublin was the key lime pie cocktail at this bar. But I'm sad to say, this time it was just disappointing. It's a pricey cocktail at €11 but I was super excited to have another one. The presentation is great but this time, the taste was just incredibly sweet - to the point it was undrinkable. I actually considered going to the bar to ask them to make me another one but then just decided to ditch it. So yeh, the cocktail was disappointing but still, this is a pretty cool bar.

Yelp
It's easy to see why Exchequer became the hot and trendy spot with their exposed brick walls, classic clean furniture, and savory menu. Located right next to the Central Hotel, it was only like 3 steps for me. The problem I always see with the trendy spots is that the food is excellent, the staff is cool if you're cool, but the clientele are shit heads (see also... ass hats). They think that they are the greatest on the planet and treat everyone like shit. I don't do well with this group, I always get the urge to toss them out a window when they are rude to the staff or even the table next to them. But I can't fault Exchequer for them. We stopped in for a small bite and they were just closing the kitchen. The waitress rushed in and got them to make us a few small dishes, it was great. These chefs are talented and the menu is outstanding. This is a great place to impress a date (bring your wallet though). Do yourself a favor and joke around with the staff, they will much appreciate it after dealing with the rest of the clients. **** Winner of the best Gastropub in Ireland 2010 *****

Yelp
This. Is. My. One. Favorite. Cocktail. Place. IN THE WORLD!!! Before the Dirty Dick in Paris. Before Tokyo's Hyatt 'New York Bar'. So, okay, the food is average. The veal was awesome, but everything else was okay without making me ask for more. I wouldn't recommend the deserts though. But the cocktails! Mamma mia, their cocktails! Just a though about them and i'm teleported to cloud 9. We started with the * Key lime pie * cocktail. Sir, Madam, this is a real work of art. I can't spoil you, but trust me and try it, you won't be disappointed. We went on with the Tropical Pornstar which was awesome, very complex taste for a fruity girly drinks. Shut up, take my money and serve me moar! We then tried the Smokey Old Fashioned. Gosh, that was amazing too! They can change the taste of the smoke according to your taste. Without mentioning that the presentation is absolutely gorgeous too. I'm dreaming of my next drink at the Exchequer (probably in a few hours), and all the cocktails I still have to experience. Challenge: TRY ALL THE COCKTAILS \o/ If you accept this challenge, you, my friend, are making the right choice in your life (yes, who cares about a car, a house or a family when you can have such amazing cocktails)

Yelp
Well this place sorted me out at the end of our night - it was a long and enjoyable heavy session with friends but the Exchequer was the perfect place to have 2 final pints and see out our evening in proper pub style. A pretty big bar area with enough room to slump or stand - we were in on what is probably an unfashionable night with it being Monday but there was still enough atmosphere with us bringing the party even if no one else was up for it. Some good lagers, wheat beers and ales on tap - the girls also seemed to be quite happy with their cocktails. I remember sipping on some tasty treats but for me it's all about the beers. A bottle of Brewdog 5 am saint was enough to put a smile on my face and with this make sure I remember the Excheq' for a repeat visit!

Yelp
Updating my review and upgrading the rating to a big 5 stars. Without a doubt the Exchequer is one of the top gastro-pubs in Dublin. I've been here now 5 times and each time I have been wowed by the food. This visit I tried with the potted rabbit appetizer----so good and served with warm bread and a mini salad---and the lamb rump as my main---again some of the best cuts of meat I've had in a while. Each was matched with wine from Exchequer's extensive selection. The Exchequer is a very popular trendy place (really neat custom woodwork around the bar and in the back dining room) that remains unpretentious with a very friendly staff.

Yelp
Very disappointing. After the last time, I had high expectations; especially seeing the lunch deals. With a craving for fish and chips however (which is not the deal until Friday) I ignored them and ordered it anyway at the usual €13.95 rate. Really good portion, in that respect I can't complain. But the fish itself was coated with a soggy, undercooked batter- a cardinal sin in my book. And in general the while thing lacked a good hit of salt and pepper which the tartar sauce, having an overkill of onions, did little to provide. No buzz at lunch and the atmosphere is a a bit dim; not too sure if I'll return.

Yelp
Nice meal in the Exchequer, though definitely not as wow-some as I'd anticipated. I had a goats cheese salad with added chicken, my friend had the lamb main. The food was good and very tasty but the portions were very small for the price. The lamb was €22 and honestly nearly could have been a kid's meal. They charged me €7 for the extra chicken on my salad which I thought was a bit much. The decor as well is pretty dated and kinda gloomy. The cocktails however are out of this world. I would recommend rounding off your meal with a key lime pie one. It's literally like drinking desert. And who would be opposed to that!!!

Yelp
This review is for drinks in the bar area only. Awesome ambiance, good looking people and a fantastic drink menu. This place is perfect for me. Stylish and fun. Though we stuck with beer and wine, I was incredibly jealous of people's cocktails. In particular the room lit up when the bartender made the key lime martini. Though I didn't taste it, I stalked the person who ordered the key lime martini. She gave me the thumbs up for approval. I loved the generous pour of my wine, and my husband enjoyed his peroni. If we have time, we will be back!

Yelp
Came here for brunch last Saturday for my birthday and I have to say the food was delicious. I had Eggs Benedict and my boyfriend had the Steak & Eggs, both cooked to perfection and the amount of food was insane. I was stuffed for hours! The only thing was the service was a tad slow even though the place wasn't too busy but the waitress we had was super lovely so it made up for it! 10/10 would recommend for a good feed and if you're in the mood for proper brunch!

Yelp
I've been in here several times and each time I've ordered the same thing- the Hendricks gin cocktail in a tea pot. At €20 it's not the cheapest option but if you're having it to yourself, it can go a long way. Utterly refreshing it's hard to not guzzle this sweet nectar from the teapot spout all at once. - yep I'm a fan of this citrusy, cucumbery cocktail. :) The place it's self is a nice spot though I have only been in it at off peak times - as in not a Friday/Saturday night. I'm pretty sure I'll be seeing this place again in the near future.

Yelp
Very cool place with the best cocktail menu !! They have a little book that has the history of cocktails all over the world and a cocktail to go along with each era. The cocktails themselves are awesome and the bartenders put so much work into them. Some they even use a little flame blower to finish the top. They always have a cocktail and a beer of the week which are really good value and usually something a little different. I also love the decor and the fake library wall. The back of the bar is really cool like a big sculpture on the ceiling. The staff are super friendly and know a lot about the drinks they serve. They also have a full food menu in the back section and have a bar menu in the front bar but i have never eaten here.

Yelp
Service was AMAZING! GREAT bartenders (Megan and Dukey) with great recommendations for drinks and food! I had an Irish Old Fashioned.... I'm kind of an Old Fashioned SNOB. I ONLY like my fave drink with a single ice cube/ sphere/ chunk (I go as far as to specifically ask if the bar uses chips/ cubes/ spheres/ chunks before they make it.... if they only hv chips I don't order it... you know why if you drink REAL OFs). Here, they use a HUGE ice cube !! Not only were the service and drinks good.... the atmosphere was chill.... perfect for a single person looking to enjoy good music (Solange among many others) and a laid back atmosphere. Highly recommended!! Clean and chill!

Yelp
A little late on this review since I went last month to the exchequer. I love the atmosphere of this bar/restaurant. It has a cocktail menu to be proud of and by god the pisco sour (may have come under a different name) was pretty damn fabulous. One of the best I've ever had and that is saying something since I drink them raaaathhherrrr often. Food was good and hearty. If you order bread, expect about 2 loaves per person. It's crazy big. I had the goats cheese main and thought it was fantastic - really tasty. My colleague had the duck Wellington which he said was also very good. The portions here are quite large so we probably didn't need the bread OR the sides of fries. Greedies. We thought the wine was a bit meh, but everything else was super. Service was excellent but we got a bit forgotten after we'd eaten (we were tucked around the corner). I would recommend to folk in the area looking for a lively spot for dinner or drinks.
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
I love the drink selection here and next to Kehoe's is my favorite spot in Dublin. great food and staff, but the drinks .... very original and a great selection of alcohols. let's put it this way, my favorite book is "eye of the storm" by jack higgins, my second favorite is the drink menu at the exchequer.

Yelp
I've eaten here before but it was drinks only this time. We rocked up after dinner in pichet and it wasn't too busy- it was bank holiday Sunday night. The cocktails here are great- I've tried them before. I had a Blue Moon beer- it's a light wheat beer- and the others had various beers and wines. The bar staff know their stuff and service is pretty quick. The floor staff are friendly too. The bar itself is lovely- I like the design. The toilets announce themselves before you arrive- a bit smelly! Probably the only bad thing about the place. However they are downstairs so it's not a big thing. If you like cocktails and friendly service. This could be the place for you.

Yelp
Super nice bar and it's central to everything so it's a good ole spot to organise friends coming from a few directions; during the day it makes for a perfect little spot for a tipple after you've shopped on Grafton Street & surrounding streets yet during the evening it comes alive and is a very popular spot amongst locals; some great beers on tap and the cocktail menu is pretty special, my fave is the hendricks high tea :-) The front of the bar is very contrasting to the space further back, so pending your mood you can people watch along Exchequer Street & sit in the front bar or tuck away with friends for a catch up in the back bar! Perfect! On a summer's day they do have a little space out front and boy, it's a sun trap however yes, it couples up as the smoking area so prepare to wave the smoke away if you get one of those people that aren't all too aware and let smoke drift into your face... All in all though, top marks and a bar I like to regularly go to

Yelp
Ah so glad someone recommended this place to us. We were not able to try the food but the drinks were outstanding. We loved that they put a lot of TLC into the drinks and clearly have put a lot of thought into the flavour combinations. We loved it so much the first time we visited that we came back the next night as well. They had a New England style IPA on tap which was delicious and a rare sight. I had the Key Lime Pie drink and it was over the top but in a great way. They toasted the top before handing it over. Id highly recommend it. If in the neighborhood check out The Exchequer!

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place while looking for a place to have dinner after failing at a few of the pubs around the area. The dining area was quiet. We were immediately seated and tended to. The menu was on the smaller side, but it was not to disappoint. I ordered the fish and chips and it was great! It was not greasy at all and it was very flavorful. My boyfriend enjoyed the confit duck. Neither was a large potion, but the food was good, so we were not upset about it.

Yelp
I have been treating myself to the tasty cocktails in here for a long time now, and they never fail to impress me, or whoever is with me. The Ledger of Liquor is the Exchequers quirky little black book full of all things delicious! And there is something in there for everyone. If you have a sweet tooth the Ginger Pornstar or Keylime Pie are excellent. The Keylime Pie is pretty much dessert in a glass. It has a soft meringue on top. If you are a whiskey fan the Smokey Old Fashioned is very tasty and very cool at the same time! You need to see how it is prepared and served. I can't properly explain it but there is smoke and a huge ice ball involved! If you and your pal are Hendricks fans the Hendricks High Tea is a must. It's comes in a Henricks pot and tea cups - fun! I could go on, but you need to pop in and experience the bar for yourself. Be sure to watch any of the cocktails being prepared by the guys behind the bar. The mixologists are amazing and really know their stuff. I have spent many occasions being mesmerised by their work. Not only are the drinks amazing, the food is excellent and the bar itself has a lovely vibe.

Jesse L.

Yelp
One of the most amazing bars if you're looking for craft cocktails!! All 5 of us were blown away. Our bartender did such a phenomenal job we stuck around for another 2 each. She also gave excellent recommendations for other bars similar to this one. Ask for a drink they might soon be calling "Acid Rain". She made a tart drink that was off the menu and still didn't come up with a name yet. We suggested this and they liked the name. But this was a drink that will make you pucker on the first sip. It had Gin in it and don't recall the rest days ago.

Yelp
I was in Exchequer last night with a large group having their Sunday roast dinner. We were there for a birthday and had about 15 people there (which I know for the staff can be quite intimidating). I cannot say enough good things about the whole experience. The deal with the Sunday roast type thing (FYI: Order in advance required!!) is one roast serves 4 people and comes with gravy, roast potatoes, roast vegetables, mash, and (my absolute favourite) the stuffing. This stuffing is phenomenal and you just have to try it! It's life changing! You have the option to choose from 3 different types of roast: chicken, beef, or pork. Each roast deal also comes with a bottle of wine. The roasts range from 40-60 euro which is a steal considering the wine and how much food you get! Because of the size of our group we ordered two beef and two chicken roasts. We ordered the beef medium but when it came out it was quite rare so I would recommend asking for it medium/well or well done if you're not into the rare stuff. We asked could it be cooked longer and they were very accommodating. Everything was very delicious and there was so much food, we had some left over which they wrapped up for us to take home. The service was incredible, especially for a group this size! We had a few people waiting on us, but one waitress in particular was outstanding. She was so helpful and so accommodating on everything we needed. She really made our night amazing and we were so grateful for her excellent service. Thanks Christine!

Yelp
What a transformation to what this place used to be. Modern, airy, friendly service and best of all - delicious food (oh glorious food how I love ye...). The food in this place is simply - (well yes, you can guess...) awesome. I went there a couple of times and was never let down. Yesterday we went for a nice dinner and it was as always - (to say it in irish slang) deadly. We started of with heavenly cocktails (oh yeah u have to beat the Monday blues somehow, dont u? ;) ) As starter I ordered duck terrine (those of you you have read some of my other reviews might have figured out by now I am a sucker for duck terrine ;) ) and this one was perfect. It came with a delicious side salad and apple chutney on toasted sweet white bread. What a combo - hearty apple, sweat bread and the chocolaty aftertaste of a perfect duck terrine... Kids, be careful when you order this dish - you might not be able to finish the main ..... We also had the selection of bread - and what a selection it is, 3-4 kinds of warm, homemade bread with olive oil or pesto. If you are like me and love to fill up on bread before the main course - this is the place to go =-). Main course was pan fried hake & mash with green peas. I normally like fish, but I always forget why until I get one of those fish dishes you simply cant stop eating. The fish was tender and the mixture of mash, green peas, buttery sauce and flavorful fish brought me right back to those glorious days of catching a fish and bringing it straight to the BBQ (no better way to eat fish btw, but this one came close). Hmmm I still wonder - was I that hungry yesterday or the food so good that I could not stop eating - anyways, it is still unclear but I managed to eat the full starter and the full main course, topped with 2 scrumptious cocktails. Oh what a way to beat the Monday blues ;).

Yelp
This place is growing on me....wasnt too sure at the start, with a crowd that I wouldnt be a fan of normally; but having gone back a few times with different people, I have definitely warmed to the place. Nice staff, good food (they have a gorgeous duck salad starter - yum, I had to hold myself back from licking the plate...!!) and great range of cocktails. They also have a DJ at the weekend. Went there on a Thursday night recently, and all laydeeeez get discounted cocktails until 11, as well as being entered into a prize draw (that time it was a Cowboys and Angels voucher...so good prize!) They recently celebrated one year in business so thats gotta be good!

Yelp
Finally made it into The Exchequer for their Sunday roast. Four people, a choice of roast meats, various sides and a bottle of wine, for €49. You've to order before Friday for that Sunday and though I'm not generally that organised I managed it this time. The food was brilliant: perfect afternoon-after-the-night-before fodder and a great alternative to brunch. The meat was cooked perfectly - we ordered medium rare - and the joint was HUGE. Sides were delish (honey glazed carrots were a highlight) and you carve the roast yourself at the table, which is a nice homey touch. Oh and the staff were lovely and attentive. Highly recommend.

Yelp
This is solely about their cocktail making skills. Not many people see it as a cocktail spot - you should, 777 and The Dylan is up there with the cocktails in this town but for 777 their range is limited plus you have to eat in there. For The Dylan, it's pricey and out of the way. Monday called for a stiff drink. We wandered about the city offering up possibilities, trying to try somewhere different to The Exchequer. "We need to mix it up a bit?" "You'd swear you are talking about your sex life after several years with the same person." "Mind from gutter, now." Sometimes you just have to accept that you continue to return to a place because of it's satisfying consistency. And that is what The Exchequer is. We attempted two other places, I say attempt as the first one had watered down drinks, the second did not get a chance to impress due to the surly bartender. "Let's go to The Exchequer, I'm fed up of this." "Truth." As per usual a warm welcome, I don't know the bartenders. They make great cocktails. They have a great selection of liqueurs. The bartender will always make you something not on the menu or like Monday: "Tell me what ingredients you like and I'll make you something." I love that confidence in their skills. And the prices are great.

Yelp
An enthusiastic 5 stars for my favorite meal of the trip. The Exchequer nails the ambiance, but the food is the key. It took me about 3 seconds to figure out what I wanted: potted rabbit confit appetizer with a pear chutney, followed by a delicious (and nutritious?) grilled chicken with walnut stuffing. Oh yeah, bring it on. Great wines too! I probably could have lived without the polenta cake dessert -- it was underwhelming at best -- but the overall experience put a smile on my face, and that's all it takes for me to sport the full 5 stars.

Yelp
Was so excited to go here for dinner having read some good reviews of the place on Yelp. Unfortunately however, after the experience we had last night I can only describe it as a big, fat let-down. Ok so the food was pretty delicious (the chocolate dessert board stole the show for me) but the service was so far from satisfactory that it completely takes away from any compliments I could bestow The Exchequer. 1. On arrival our table was given jugs of water but no glasses. It took THREE requests and 25minutes until our parched party was finally provided with glasses (this should have been a warning indicator for the level of service that was yet to follow, but we remained naive and ever hopeful for an improvement) 2. The friendly waitress brought out the wrong food and after a good three minutes of the plates sitting in front of us, she apologised and transferred the plates directly to the table next to us... Now although I can appreciate her mistake, I would have been nay impressed to have received food that had been sitting infront of other people for so long before it was given to me... 3. To finish off the evening, the credit card machine was on the brink and the waitress kept on telling my mum that her card was being declined when it blatantly said that the connection was down. It was just the lack of professionalism that was shown, leading to my mum's mortification as the waitress made it seem like it was her problem, not the machine's... This lasted for about 20mins and no apology was given when the machine did fiiinally get working again (and no discount was given despite the multiple food-mix ups either..) Overall I'd say good food but really unprofessional service, to the point that I'd avoid at all costs purely to keep my blood pressure levels down..

Yelp
Went here for cocktails last night and this review is solely about the amazing cocktails. Served beautifully and made with fresh ingredients these were the best cocktails by far in Dublin. Will definitely come back any day for brilliantly made cocktails.

Yelp
We went here on a Monday night. It was quiet enough, but not empty - perfect for a few drinks, a chat and a bit of dinner. Drinks at the bar were nice - they have a good selection of wines. We headed up to the dining area for dinner, where we went with the set menu. We all raved about our dinners - fantastic quality food for a great price. The set menu is available during the week, and at certain times at the weekend. I have a feeling this is going to be my go to place for weekday drinks and dinner for a while!

Yelp
First time here during the week for a christmas party. I hadn't heard of it before so didn't know what to expect. What we got was great food. I'd definitely recommend getting the crab starter. It is superb, with a nice bit of brown bread to go with it. Service was great for a large group and everyone else in the place seemed to be enjoying themselves. For desert they had a good idea of providing a selection of about 5 different deserts on a long plate for 4.95 a head between 4 people. It meant that we got to try a small bit of a few different deserts. All were fantastic. Can't wait to head there again.

Yelp
Went here for lunch a few weeks back and a party on Saturday just past. Great experience both times. Had the steak in the flatbread for lunch which was fantastic and had a walnut and date bread for dessert. Not sure if it's always on the menu but that date bread was the best dessert I had eaten in a long time. The waitress said it's not that popular for some reason, most people order the brownie so maybe they have taken it off the menu. Was at a 30th there on Saturday just gone, really good night time buzz there. Music is a nice brand of house, really upbeat vibe about the place. The finger food provided was just another level. None of your cocktail sausages here. Mini pork bellies, calamari and potato skins. All incredible! For the lads and lassies who like their craft beers it's a great spot. Most of the reviews focus on the cocktails but the beer selection is top drawer. Had the weissenoher amber lager and the dungarvan red ale. You pay about a euro extra for the craft beers over the generic's but they are so much better and you drink less of it because they actually have some flavour! Go forth, eat, imbibe and be merry!

Yelp
Most of the time when you review somewhere you have a sense of overall good or overall bad... but after dinner in the Exchequer I can only say that it was odd. We were in the restaurant part which is quite comfortable, and the service was prompt and polite, but the menu... the menu is weird. OK I'm not against people doing new and different things, and I think restaurants should be putting their own stamp on food... I'd just personally always leave a few safe options on the menu... for the less than adventurous, or for people who are unconvinced by the menu. I was unconvinced by the menu.... anything that started out sounding good seemed to be accompanied by something that just didn't sound like it would work... like scallops and pork belly. I thought it was just me that was at a loss, but our whole table seemed to be confused. I normally skip starters (being more of a dessert person) but we all seemed to gravitate towards them. And we all ended up having starters and sides. I went for the mushroom & poached egg toast, which in fairness was a pretty enormous starter, and the vanilla crushed potatoes. Everyone said the food they got tasted really good. My mushroom thing was really really good. Then I thought I'd definitely have dessert, but again with the menu... just weird. Seasoned yelpers know I am an equal opportunities cake eater, so it should come as a shock to you that I decided not to bother. Lemon curd is not complimented by butterscotch, and there seemed to be some attempt to go for a banoffee thing but with meringue. Perhaps there is great gastronomy behind these dessert ideas, but I can't help but be put in mind of someone I know who habitually puts several desserts in the same dish - TO THE RUIN OF ALL! I might have found solace in the chocolate platter but it was just too expensive. Just another instance where I think I've turned into Bernard Black - I just want a bit of mash and cake! Perhaps if I just trusted the chef I'd have had an amazing food experience... I just don't know

Yelp
So trawling around town and trying to avoid drinking alcohol (a plan which failed miserably later on that night) we popped into this place for a bite to eat, admittedly it was 9:30 so we got there just before the kitchen closed. Waiter was friendly and guided us to a table for two where we examined the menu. Obviously not enough in my case as I misread the main course (I wanted a beef salad and it turns out it said beetroot salad, talk about a malteaser moment on my part) so he suggested that it was available as a starter and was more then big enough, in fact it was practically a main course. Two glasses of wine on his part and diet coke on mine (see I was doing so damn well) our food arrived. I imagine the cow didn't even know it was missing an ear as there was razor thin slivers of beef drowning in a sea of green lettuce and that was pretty much it. My friend at first sniggered, which then turned into pity and his eyes full of concern "seriously though Rebecca have a potato" as he scooped his meal onto my plate, making me feel like Oliver Twist (please Sir, can I have some more?). With the meal then finished, we decided to head home so we ordered the bill and waited...and waited...finally they noticed us intently staring at them and loudly joking that we should just leave and see if someone notices, they served us the bill with a smile. Not the best experience for food but I would come back in here for a drink or maybe it's better at lunchtime or a decent dinner hour.

Yelp
This place is perfect for after work drinks or for a catch up with the girls. The cocktails are amazing. I have the ginger pornstar, true temperance and the smokey old fashioned. While true temperance might be on the fruity side for some the others are well worth a taste. In particular the smokey old fashioned if for nothing else other than to see how it s presents and to smell that fantastic smoked wood. The food was nice but I was left wanting more, just not more from here. I think being told as we were been seated that we only had the table for 2 hours may have put us off a bit, news to us!!! Feta mousse salad to start, followed by fish and chips, all washed down with a lovely bottle of Pinot (the best bit). Food was nice but I have had better. All in all a great evening catching up with a friend but in my opinion stick to the cocktails and wine list!!

Yelp
Went in for lunch on Saturday about 1pm and wasn't too busy, service fine and friendly. As you'd expect from gastropub food was good and trendily presented but very small portions. For two of us ordered fries to share which waitress suggested might be "bit light" - she was right. Salad was starter sized portion, cheese tartlet was a little better but again not big enough - definitely order a side each if you go.

Yelp
Awesome bar, been back twice already and only been here one night. Great pint of Guinness, and a wide selection of beers. Staff really decent and clean toilets for a bar. Not tried the food so can't comment but seems popular enough.

Yelp
We were in the neighborhood & feeling the need for some brunch. The Exchequer was a good choice. the crab 'omelette' would've been more accurately described as a fritatta -- the eggs were cooked all the way through -- in fact, the dish overall was cooked to golden-brown. This was OK by me, as I have a strong dislike of runny eggs, but my date prefers fluffy, just-set omelettes. as for the fish & chips: the fish was great, nicely seasoned and served piping hot, and the pea puree was fantastic. However, the chips were not very hot, not very crispy, and basically not worth the calories. It looks like they have an amazing cocktail program and I'd love to go back & have a cocktail or two.

Yelp
Dont understand how this place has good reviews. Prawn tacos were awful, zero flavor with canned salsa and half cooked shrimp. Service was non existent.

Yelp
We headed to The Exchequer on a friends recommendation. I need to go back and shake his hand. I can imagine a first date going very well in here. The interior is atmospheric. All that is missing is an open fire. It's dark and seductive. The walls are decorated with books, well, kinda...pictures of books really! The music is at the perfect level, I could hear those around me but not people nearby. Cocktails were the call of the evening. We weren't looking for food (and I'm not sure my budget can stretch that far) but I caught sight of what was on offer and practically followed the waiter back to the kitchen. The clientele was couples and groups of lads looking for an interesting drink. The 'Lodger of Liquors' was extensive, so much choice so little time! I found it overwhelming. When the waiter came for our drinks orders I told him I just couldn't choose and was met with the perfect answer 'Just tell me what you like'. Ah-may-zing! The waiter then brought me an amazing concoction, I don't recall the name but it will on the Christmas menu and is a variation on the Dark and Stormy. I suggest you try it! For 'dessert' I ordered the Old Smokey which is a performance in itself and was perfectly to my taste. The price is alright when you consider the artistry and the excellent service. Definitely on the list for when I'm home next!

Yelp
The atmosphere here was really fantastic, and our servers could not have been friendlier or more helpful. We arrived jet-lagged just before the kitchen opened, and they were extremely accommodating, assuring us it would be no problem. The food was good, but nothing to write home about, probably 3 stars, but the bruschetta was delicious and fresh. Prices are not fantastic but also not terrible. However, everything else was 5 stars.

Yelp
I love love this bar and one of the reasons I booked it for celebration drinks Reserved a large table and on arrival Barbra shows us the table and insured no one was taking it . She also went through finger food menu we ordered . It was very very busy but Barbra made sure we got drinks , food in time and food was fab ! All my guests had a great night and raved about the coctails and food Again I couldn't fault thanks to Barbra !

Yelp
Stopped in here for a lunch bite with a colleague last Friday. service was good, we had a quirky waitress who was good fun and helpful. We both went for the sandwich, soup and tea/coffee deal for 8;50. I have to say the value and quality of food is excellent. I went for the pulled pork sandwich with spicy tomato soup while my colleague had the lamb with potato and leek soup. Both were really good. I definitely recommend and will be coming back in with the wife soon.

Yelp
We arrived in Dublin earlier this evening. Our plan was to eat at a different pub on Dame Circle, but its kitchen closed at 6pm. Lucky for us! The Exchequer offers a fantastic menu. We started with the local cheese and charcuterie board as an appetizer. This included four types of Irish craft cheese and three types of meat (pork, lamb and beef). A perfect way to start a meal! For dinner, I enjoyed the pan seared veal liver with red onion jam, crispy bacon, fondant potato and a fava bean & sage butter. This was my first time eating liver and I loved it! My wife enjoyed the sole dinner, which was on special. Both meals were delectable! We washed both meals down with a pint of Guinness. The Exchequer lived up to its title as "Best Gastropub in Ireland 2010." Highly recommended.
