Coronavirus and Rent: NYC Restaurateurs Outline How They Are Staying Afloat | Eater NY

"I learned that Harlem Southeast Asian restaurant the Expat, whose space is owned by Columbia University, had its rent forgiven for April and May, and co-owner Andrew Ding says the university has also been sending surveys to commercial tenants to assess what future rent arrangements might look like." - Tanay Warerkar

Grubhub Is Allegedly Charging NYC’s the Expat For Phone Calls That Didn’t Generate Orders | Eater NY

"A Southeast Asian gastropub at 64 Tiemann Pl., near Claremont Avenue, the Expat reports that Grubhub charged it for dozens of phone calls that didn’t result in orders: between January 4 and April 20 the restaurant received 54 Grubhub calls but only three resulted in orders, and Grubhub allegedly billed $6.20–$7.17 per call for a total of about $380 (just under $21 of that for calls that generated revenue). Co-owner Andrew Ding alleges many of the charged calls were customer queries (26 calls about ingredients, hours, or delivery), 16 calls rang and went to voicemail yet still incurred fees, and nine calls were follow-ups about orders already placed online that resulted in double commission charges; Ding called the practice “unethical,” “predatory,” and “unconscionable.” Grubhub says it will conduct an immediate audit and has previously pledged refunds, but restaurants must review and dispute charges within a 120-day window and a February survey found 91 percent of restaurants still hadn’t been refunded. The Expat’s delivery business has surged—from about 20 Grubhub orders per week pre-pandemic to roughly 47 orders per day in March and April (nearly 2,500 total)—yet the restaurant has lost 70 percent of overall business, furloughed nine servers and bar staff, is operating with a crew of eight mostly in the kitchen, continues to pay thousands in commissions, uses Relay rather than Grubhub couriers, and fears retaliation for speaking out." - Tanay Warerkar

Orders through Uber Eats. $107 for 3 dishes. Fried rice and Singapore noodles were horrible. Not edible. We threw all out, sadly. Soup was OK, but the noodles were soggy and stuck together. Really wish that weren’t the case. Never from joint again.

Google
Great atmosphere and genuinely attentive service. The Lemon Pepper Curry wings are a standout. They're unique, crispy, and packed with flavor. Other favorites: the Curry Chicken Quesadilla and the Char Siu BBQ Pork Fried Rice. If you’re having a cocktail and like bourbon, order the Super Strawberry Smash Bros. All around a fantastic spot. I’ll be back.

Google
Came here for brunch and it was amazing! Every dish was delicious and fresh and the cocktails were strong and tasty. We ordered the Vietnamese omelette, Thai basil fried rice, spicy mango salad, and lemon curry tater tots. I'll definitely be back!

Google
This is the first time I've ever had a Pad Thai and not been satisfied. It was slimy, tasteless, and overall disgusting. I'm sure this place is fine as a college bar, but don't go here expecting good food.

Google
A cute bar for meeting with friends or for a date. It’s great to go for happy hour to get drinks and snacks. I really like the chicken wings and the different flavorings they have.

Han Yong W.

Google
Great spot for a happy hour (11:30 AM - 6:30 PM Monday through Friday and 4 PM - 6 PM on Saturday and Sunday)! The cauliflower wings are a must order! . My favorite drink on their happy hour menu is the Kumqat Spritz. Note that it can easily get crowded especially when there's an event hosted by the University.

Google
I came here after a friend recommended their chicken and waffles to me. The service and vibes of this spot are pleasantly rustic and chill. The wait staff were very comfortable making recommendations, which I really appreciated. While visually the impressive, I personally didn’t enjoy their take on chicken and waffles, as it leaned too far into the savory side (they added spring onions and some Asian seasoning). The skin completely fell apart the already small portion of fried chicken and it was very dry and lacking any fat. The syrup, however, was wonderful!

Google
The restaurant is a gastro pub and is in the basement and as you enter the bar is right in front of you, so its a drunkard's delight. The restaurant is pretty small, however, there is outside dining. Outside dining needs to up their game, it's pretty sloppy and some tables had bad lighting and right underneath the public CC cameras. Food: ⭐⭐½ Positives - The lemon curry pepper wings were good. It had a crunch to it and had a good zingy taste to it. The curry chicken quesadillas were very good. Earl grey hot tea was outstanding. Negatives - The Singapore noodles although came with a large serve, felt was lacking seasoning. The Tom yum chicken fried rice although smelled good, the taste didn't match the aroma, infact the food tasted stale and mushy. The Bo Luc Lac was delicious, but disappointing when it came to quantity. There were more cucumbers than beef cubes and it was cooked to well done 😐. The spring rolls were soggy and oily when served. Coconut rice didn't have the authentic robust coconut flavor. Service: ⭐⭐ The waitress who took our call, received us at our arrival, and who seated us was welcoming & cordial. However, the waitress who took our order was on the flip side. Initially was good, but turned out to make our evening a disaster. We placed our order and 20 mins later my wife had her order (fried rice). Unlike most restaurants, they didn't serve the appetizers first and my wife waited for the rest of the food to arrive so we all could eat together however minutes passed and nothing arrived. I had to call the waiter and sendthe fried rice back as it became cold. She looked pissed turned around and said in this restaurant we serve whatever is ready first and everything else comes after. In my head and the rest were thinking "so what's the concept of having appetizers (cravables) if you don't get it before the entreés". Anyways we let it go by and waited more. 10 mins later she comes in and in a mocking tone explained: "since you wanted everything together, they are remaking your food". We all had facepalms😐. 10 mins later the server came and explained it to us for no reason and this time said next time you have to tell us if you want appetizers first. But isn't this common sense to serve them first???!!!!. Anyways we got the food and it wasn't up to par. Ambience: ⭐⭐⭐ The restaurant looked very dull as the first impression led to it being in a basement. Lighting was low, tables and chairs didn't match, some seats were right underneath the NYPD cameras, and tons of marijuana smoke from the streets. I would let others know to dine in and have less than 5 people as the tables don't fit larger groups. Overall: ⭐⭐⅓ Suggestions: Use basmati rice or sona masoori rice, might help with the mushiness of the rice. Explain the customers the order in which they might receive their food. Waitresses need retraining in people skills. Please make rounds to ensure people have full glasses of water.

Yelp
I just went here with my sister for a Sunday Brunch. And we were both extremely happy with everything, the food, the service and yes the FOOD! We had the Bahnmi B.E.C., Steak and Eggs, and wings. All delicious! I had the Kumkuat Spritz, delicious and my sister had the Passion Fruit Margarita. And our server Flo was just the BEST! So sweet and very helpful. You should check this place out, for sure.

Yelp
We came on a cold day while walking near morning side park. The decoration was impressive and creative with Taiwanese magazine pages and newspaper from the 80s on the ceiling and random porcelain plates on the wall. It is evident that the owner tries to cultivate a cultural nostalgia for expats. The food was just fine - fried rice was plain, chicken wings were well seasoned but a bit dry. Lychee Thai ice tea did not taste like lychee or Thai ice tea, but succeeded to be filled with too much ice. Can't comment much on the Vietnamese coffee - the waitress didn't remind us to stir it in advance. Therefore, we had a cup of pretty bitter coffee until hitting the condensed milk at the bottom.

Yelp
This spot is a cool gem. Appreciated the vibes that they had and cool atmosphere. Really enjoyed the Roti with curry chicken when I came here back in 2020

Yelp
This place was amazing! When you walk in you can be a little deceived. The music was r&b/hiphop, the walls look like some other century then the tables are like farm house maybe- a lot going on and I guess perfect example of expat! Everything was great and fresh. I would come here a million times over. The table seating isn't the best but the food is so good you make due. I would order it all again besides the chicken wings they weren't cooked enough for me and I asked for well done (other drawback was that they couldn't do all flats). They even had GF soy sauce and I was amazed and so happy for that. The food didn't come out all together but still was great. They didn't have many servers but they were still quite attentive. Also the table we sat at was very wobbly and we kept trying to put napkins under it but it eventually worked. I recommend and hope when I come back it's just as good as this time.

Yelp
Rating is only for the food. The food lacked flavor. It was very bland. I liked the drinks though except for the Thai iced tea which wasn't sweet at all. Ask for their hot sauce or bring your own so that the food has some kind of kick to it. If you can't do spicy, ask for more salt. The food needed more seasoning. The other weird thing was the lime that came with the dishes was hot like it was just boiled. A lot of the dishes had pork and I wished they had other options like beef or duck. On the plus side, the staff was courteous when I asked for spoons. I like there is an option for you to request that the bar tender can custom make a drink for you. I wished they had dessert spoons or gave us new spoons for dessert. The lychee rose crème brûlée didn't taste like crème brûlée because of the texture. It's the first lychee dish I don't like and the first crème brûlée I dislike. I usually love crème brûlée. The texture is more like a gelatin dessert than crème brûlée. It has this thin film like texture under the brûlée I really dislike.

Yelp
Such a cute and unique place. Stopped here for brunch with my coworkers and was glad we went. The dishes are so interested that I shared two with my buddy just because we wanted to sample it all. Also, you can't go wrong with a bottomless mimosa situation..just putting that out there.

Yelp
What the hell happened to this place, the Pad Thai used to be my go to here but the last two times it's been basically an inedible pile of soggy slop where all the noodles are overcooked and chopped into little pieces on arrival. My girlfriend had the Singapore noodle which was also an inedible gloopy mess. I noticed we weren't the only ones that barely touched our food looking around. Such a bummer how much this place has slipped.

Yelp
Servers were super friendly and ambiance was fun. Dimly lit place with a 1900s theme. Satay chicken nachos were huge and delicious, loved the peanut sauce on it and the crispy tortillas. Curry was also tasty. Taking off a star for desserts. The creme brulee was not a creme brulee. The top had no crust at all, just a soggy thin film of slightly browned sugar. The lychee rose flavor was off in the dish too. It was also a really tiny portion for how much it cost (the dish looks wide, but it's really shallow). The other dessert (brownie and ice cream) was also a pretty small portion :(
google avatar

Natalie L.

Yelp
The food a disappointment. The flavor was just not there for all the dishes except maybe one. We ordered firecracker chicken wings, chicken satay nachos, the chicken curry roti, and the Thai iced tea. The wings had no actual flavor, they were just simply spicy. The curry that came with the roti pancake was watery and lacked flavor. Curry is usually a thicker texture so it was a really strange way to experience that. The Thai iced tea was not sweet at all it was watery and unpleasant. Probably the worst one I've had in my life. The chicken satay is what saves this review from getting a 1 star. It was quite tasty but got very cold because our server never gave us plates, napkins, or utensils. He seemed a little out of it. All and all this experience was not the best and I'm hoping they could add more flavor to their food as well as their staff.

Yelp
1/1 Ambience; 1.5/2 Food; 0.5/1 Service; 1/1 Value The ambience is warm and charming, lending itself perfectly to date nights or hang outs with friends. The space is lovely and evokes vibes reminiscent of an old bar, but with an energetic and casual vibe. I went on a Thursday evening, and given the proximity to Columbia University and the Manhattan School of Music, the restaurant was packed with students. There was a bit of a fratty vibe, but nothing too ostentatious. The food is a mix of pan-Asian fusion as well as classic dishes. My friend and I shared the Thai basil stir fry and the Thai basil fried rice with Odin's skull and the overflow sake. The former drink was delicious and the latter was a very, very generous serving with an apt name. Both entrees were fresh and the portions were enormous; this was my only meal for the day and I went home feeling very full. While the fried rice was fantastic with a well-balanced salty and savory flavoring, the stir fry was more bland and fell short. Our waitress was friendly, but service was spotty with the staff not providing utensils or water until we just got up and got it ourselves. Overall, the Expat was a good experience with a couple setbacks. The quality of the food for the price and generous portions makes this a place worth visiting!

Yelp
We love this place BUT ... PLEASE BRING BACK THE MOCHI CHURROS ! Have dined in and love the ambience, but also have ordered takeout quite a bit, the food is always delicious

Yelp
My husband and I have walked by this cute spot so often and wondered what it was like. We came here for our anniversary dinner and it didn't disappoint! We had enjoyed the subtly spicy Crispy Curried Tofu bites. My husband enjoyed the Stir fried Bok Choy with Garlic with pork and a fried egg. I loved the Pork Ramen Stir Fry. Despite how busy it was we were able to have a fun leisurely dinner. Really loved the tasty meal and eclectic ambience. Service was great too!
google avatar

Christina S.

Yelp
Here's the deal, I loved the location and vibe of the spot, but the food didn't match. We ordered the chicken and waffles and the tater tots. For my taste the chicken was overcooked on the outside, but moist on the inside. The waffle was great. The syrup was much to strong for the plate IMO. I'd suggest having a lighter syrup option. Tater tots were normal tater tots, cooked well, tasted good! The bottomless mimosas though were delicious! I could come back just for that. All in all, we won't be back.

Yelp
Since Fairway closed down, the Westside has been a bit bleak, and Expat has come to revive the neighborhood. Went on a Sunday night. Heads up when you enter the space, you're walking down a few steps to the entry. Lovely hostess to your right, cheerful attitude. We sat at the bar, which is central to the place. The open style design allows you to see the entire space, and all its' intimate nooks. There is even a projector screen showing hilarious *silent and closed captioned* cinema. In regards to the food menu- tasty and delicious. Hints to the pan-Asian theme, as I had the Chicken Pad Thai. Also tried the scallion pancake appetizer, sauce is BOMB. In regards to the cocktail menu- pretty decent selection. They carry Roku which is rarely seen; also attributing to the theme. Bartender was sweet and knowledgeable. Would definitely come back, love the ambiance and the aesthetic. It's giving rustic cottagecore with an Uptown twist.

Yelp
Huge portions of really tasty food! The Papaya Salad is the best I've ever had. The. staff is really friendly and really compliments the pub's other-world vibe. My waitress was Hana and she was a delight with a great sense of humor.

Yelp
Obsessed with this place. Always and forever my nyc bar!!! Can't wait to be back again. The staff are hilarious and the drinks are amazing. The decor. The food. The MUSIC. Incredible.

Jim T.

Yelp
There menu is getting smaller and smaller. No more soup noodle! No more tots loaded with pulled pork! And not to mention portion got smaller and price got higher.
google avatar

Munoz J.

Yelp
We wandered into here while visiting our daughter who attends Columbia. What a find! Thought was going to be like any other bar and grille but the menu variety was outstanding! Compliment to the chef! Also the guy tending bar with long hair that looks like Jesus and Thor makes a mean Manhattan. Kudos!

Lisa M.

Yelp
I used to love this place. The kumquat spritzers, cauliflower wings, churros with green tea sauce, amongst many other items on their menu are delicious! However, a few days ago I went with a friend and I ordered the churros. To my dismay and surprise I chewed into the churro and felt something extremely crunchy. When I pulled the hard crunchy particle out of my mouth there were two pieces of glass stuck between the churro.
google avatar

Yelp
Great Valentine evening hanging with my Sister in Love and my niece in Love ended here with some apps and drinks after my time with the Mr. & our children. We need Carlito who was an amazing bartender who kept our glasses filled and tasty cocktails. We dined on an array of appetizers - lemon pepper cauliflower wings - Lemon pepper wings and hot wings - Papaya salad - Shrimp rolls Our drinks started off with us all having different drinks before we ended up having the same drinks plus plenty of shots from the bartender. This place is cute and quaint and perfect for drinks from our experience but it appeared that several people having dinner at tables and the place picked up pretty good after we hung for a hour or two at the bar. I look forward to heading back for more CHEERS moments.

Yelp
I LOVE expat!! Seriously such great service, such kind and friendly staff. Also had the best spicy margarita I could ever ask for. Seriously consider this bar for a wonderful night out with friends.

Giselle G.

Yelp
I came here on Wednesday night for their happy hour menu. It was great and I would definitely recommend getting the cauliflower wings which were amazing. We ordered the dinosaur wing; cauliflower wings, spring roll, the pork quesadilla and drinks. For the drink we had the kumquat spritz. The dinosaur wings which were chicken wings were not too good. The cauliflower wings were delicious and to me better than the actual chicken wings. The spring roll was fine. The pork quesadilla was really good; the pork was flavorful and delicious. The reason; I took one star off is because they included gratuity on the bill. I did not see this marked anywhere nor was I informed of the gratuity being included. This is a problem because then I paid I additional gratuity. We paid on the automatic machine so I did not notice until today when I was cleaning out my wallet and looked at the receipt. When I went to pay, I was shown the amount to pay and if you want to add gratuity; which I did. Restaurants usually have this type of information in a very visible place to inform you and or they say the tip is already included. Also when you are given a printed receipt it had the information but being that the machine was used; customers won't be aware.

Yelp
I love it here! I love the ambiance and energy here. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The Expat is very unique and has a very laid back environment. They have music and entertainment here regularly as well. I tried their burger and fries, and it was the best burger I've had in awhile. I'd highly recommend stopping here!
google avatar

Elai S.

Yelp
Fries were tasty. Veggies on the burger are tasty and different, I sense they were mixed in some kind of mint juice. First of all, I would have enjoyed a larger burger for 19$ . Second of all, while it was tender and tasty, this burger lacked any substantial amount of sauce and was dry, so I ended up putting ketchup and mayo on it to make it more tolerable which obviously takes the point away from gettinga specialty burger. I might, just might, give it another try with a different food item. Maybe
google avatar

Mitali S.

Yelp
Great food and drink menu. Curried tofu bites and cauliflower wings are a MUST have! The service can sometimes be slower but everyone is extremely nice. It's cute for a date night or lunch with coworkers. Highly recommend!

Rose D.

Yelp
I never write reviews but I just couldn't stay silent and watch one of my favorite places in the area just fall apart right in front of my eyes. Like others below me have also reported, if you've been a regular then you're in for some heartache because nearly all the food that used to make this place amazing are gone or unrecognizable. Mochi churros gone, their burger selections gone, and what happened to the noodles?? I brought friends here to impress them but it was so embarrassing.
google avatar

Ana L.

Yelp
The drinks were amazing, I had one of the mead cocktails and it was so delightful, however, the main courses had little to no flavor. My fellow diners and I were very disappointed by the lack of flavor as the curry fries we got as an appetizer were absolutely delicious. I would recommend for drinks and apps, but the large dishes leave much to be required.
google avatar

Mykel B.

Yelp
A GREAT place, just a block away from the subway. The menu is completely mix... truly EXPAT. A mix of American, Vietnamese, Chinese, Indian... and that's just the burgers! For expats and locals too. The staff is also helpful and understanding. (I had a reservation for 6 and no one but me showed up!) The ambience was friendly, with a good mix of bar surrounded by various sized tables. If I lived closer, I'd be there every night.

Rebecca L.

Yelp
Sarah the bartender is a star! My first experience at the Expat was absolutely outrageous. I recently moved to the city and this crew has created such a welcoming dynamic I actually feel overwhelmed by all the love! I cannot wait to come back with friends to share my great and wholesome experience with everyone I know!

Yelp
The place was a bit dingy lol, but I liked the food. Singapore noodles with medium spice was good. The French toast was decent too

Yelp
came here on a random weekday for lunch during their happy hour. it wasn't very busy at all so the service and food was really quick! the kumquat drink was really delcious and everything was so reasonably priced. the actual decor of the restaurant was very tasteful and interesting. I would love to come back at a busier time during the evening!

Yelp
FYI: I left a review prior, deleted it as the manager called me after I left it and attempted to reconcile the situation. I am politely declining and moving forward because the overall situation I think needs to be addressed regardless as a "just in case" I needed some time away to think before coming back, but the entire interaction just made me uncomfortable. I'm adding an extra star for the first person I spoke to and that's about it. 3 to most people is "average" and this wasn't an average experience for me. I ordered online last November, the 5 spice tofu and shiitake. The first person I spoke too on the phone was nice and helpful, I stated I had allergies and he wrote them down, and even noted to remove mushroom as I was sensitive to gluten. When I received the order, it still had mushroom so I double checked with the person on the phone, as I gave benefit of the doubt maybe they gave me a different kind of mushroom -- no. He apologized and said they messed up and gave me the regular marinated mushrooms, and they offered to send another one. I was already nervous about this, but they reassured it would be fine. The second plate I received had the second item I was allergic to which is garlic. Garlic is one of those things you can SEE and SMELL. I even took a photo to show the staff, keep this in mind for later. So I called back to tell them the second order they sent had garlic. I ended up giving this to a friend because of course I couldn't eat that either. By this time I was upset because 2 orders were messed up and I was getting hangry. The second person on the phone pretty much got the burnt end of this and he seemed flustered on the phone, he tried to scramble and rectify the situation himself, but after waiting he told me that the cooks on the phone told him the did NOT put garlic in my food. I took a photo and offered to send to them, because I found it astounding that they were indirectly accusing me of lying when the proof was there. They blatantly refused to listen to this, and the guy ended up handing the phone to the manager later. I explained the situation on the phone to the manager who initially seemed unsure of what to do with the situation and just offered to refund me. I just accepted the refund, but I was annoyed with the fact the kitchen staff tried to gaslight me when I offered to show proof. Not something I would recommend doing, unless you want legal trouble. Again, the restaurant ended up calling me /after/ I left a review about this experience, I think they were not expecting the honest truth on a public forum. However, I will not be returning due to this situation. It left a really bad taste in my mouth, no pun intended. I felt humiliated and exhausted. Please take this into consideration for the next person who addresses food allergies. And for the love of god, please *don't* call me, just take this as a lesson and heavy honest feedback. This is an issue with a lot of NYC restaurants I've noticed. I think unless someone goes into anaphylactic shock, and/or dies, it won't be taken as seriously unfortunately.
google avatar

Hunter S.

Yelp
Based on the dish I ordered, I'm not totally sure what this restaurant wants to be, but it seems to have enough interesting offerings that I would try it again. I got the signature chicken sandwich. Being from the Nashville area, I was thinking hot chicken, but it was actually just regular buttermilk chicken. The sandwich was on a toasted bun and contained three patties, so it was A LOT! I got the tater tots for sides and some spring veggie rolls. The veggie rolls were hot and crispy. Multiple sauces available, but I went with the chili sauce. Appears to have Thai noodles and multiple fried cauliflower dishes/wing renditions as well as regular wings. Also wok dishes, burgers, and some cheesy fry/nacho dishes? Again, not bad food, at a reasonable price. Just not sure the ultimate theme! Maybe Vietnamese inspired gastropub?

Yelp
Came here around 10pm on a Tuesday with colleagues and it was great! The bar was packed but we were able to stand and some of us got a table to eat as well. I can't comment on the drinks but my friends seemed to enjoy theirs a lot. A few of us shared the Spicy Five Spice Pork Nachos and it truly hit the spot. The portions were decent for the price and it was a creative asian fusion twist that actually worked IMO. so many other items on their menu looked fire too, I can't wait to come back and try!
google avatar

Angela L.

Yelp
I've been here twice but I had to wait to write a review because I only had drinks the first time. I'm glad I waited because the food is really what makes this place fantastic. Don't get me wrong, the cocktails are also amazing! But wow, I was shocked at how delicious the wings were. My entree and my guests entrée were both filling and delicious. Can't remember what I got as I went two weeks ago but we both couldn't stop talking about how delicious the food was as we kept stuffing our mouths. This restaurant has plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. If I had any complaint it would just be about how slow the service was. You can order your drinks and food online so I guess that's why they don't come around too often. But we were having trouble with this and constantly needing someone to order from but it would take forever for someone to come around.
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
Great bar, though the food is like a 6/10. Inauthentic American Chinese for a restaurant that seems to want to pretend the food is authentic? Their whole perspective on food baffles me. That said, my favorite place to grab a drink. Service is instant, informed, considerate, helpful without being obtrusive. Drafts probably won't be your favorites but the cocktails are decent and the prices ain't bad. Some art house films were playing the corner while I was there. I liked it.

Yelp
I've ordered take out many times from here but this was the first time I've been in the actual restaurant. First, props to the place for taking reservations for brunch (and on a Saturday I might add!) We had a big group (8 people) and some were early, some were late but we were seated pretty much immediately even though the full party wasn't there. They do bottomless mimosas, bellinis, and prosecco for $25 (you can mix and match). Bloody Mary is an additional $10. 6/8 of us did the bottomless and shout out to our waiter who we basically ran ragged. Even with our chaotic ordering and constant requests for more things he did such a great job. For brunch they have some things from their regular menu, and then an entire sweet and savory brunch menu as well. Half our party also stayed for another hour or so after and the bartender gave us the happy hour prices even though it wasn't happy hour. Overall really tasty food, cute spot in person, and staff are very accommodating.

Yelp
UNBELIEVEABLY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. We ordered food through their website. They got the order wrong. When we called, there was no apology, no offer to make things right, instead the person answering the phone "checked with the ktichen" and said they she didn't believe us. Then we were told that we could email the restaurant and they might "consider" a refund. All we wanted was the Pad Thai we had ordered, but they had no interest in that. Finally a higher up offered a refund, but it shouldn't take mulitple calls to get what shoudl have been done in the first place. We used to be regular customers. No more.

Yelp
We popped into the Expat on a Saturday for a quick lunch. The food was great, a huge portion and well priced. The barman Zach was super friendly and did a great job. Thanks for such a great experience!

Yelp
I'm not going to say we'll never be back, because we eat here all the time. But last night my girlfriend put in an order that left a bad taste in our mouths. The last three times we've order for delivery, we've paid extra for green goddess dressing that they didn't include in the bag. So last night, we put in order and she called, politely asking that the dressing be included. I thought she asked pretty politely and ended the conversation with a "thank you," in response the expat employee abruptly hung up the phone. When the order came, we had the dressing on the side AND the salad she ordered absolutely drenched in green goddess, almost like they were playing a joke on her. It was like a green goddess soup.

Yelp
I don't normally give out one-star reviews on principle; there's always a chance that the place just had a bad night or there are extenuating circumstances beyond its control. My experience tonight at the Expat is testing that position, as tonight was quite possibly the most subpar bar experience I've had in my three decades on God's green earth. The Good: The bar is warm, and it's cold outside The Bad: Food and drink quality is poor, inattention from bartenders I arrived at the Expat at 7:30 PM on a Saturday night; early for the bar scene, but perfect for dinner. I didn't have a reservation, but was able to get seated immediately at the bar by a stroke of fate. My wife and I put in an appetizer and drink order, lemonade and a house cider. I sampled the lemonade as soon as it arrived and was pretty dismayed to find that there was zero sugar at all in the drink. The bartender put a shot of simple sugar into the glass on request, but the level of sour in the drink was at the point where there was no real hope of saving it. No issue with my wife's cider, but no points for that since it came in a can. The appetizer we ordered, tater tots covered with cheese and char siu. It took over thirty minutes to arrive, which was bad enough, but the tots and char siu were lukewarm at best when they arrived. It's pretty evident that the dish sat for 5-10 minutes in the kitchen before being brought out, indicating that food delivery systems need to be tightened a bit moving forward. I've been here for an hour since then (still here as matter of fact), and was only asked how things were when the check arrived. Not great. I'd heard that the Expat was a great bar to visit, and there's a lot of potential here. It's just sad that things turned out the way they did tonight. If anyone's hungry, I still have some of those lukewarm tater tots on the table. I'll be headed out to McDonalds in a few.

Yelp
Rounding up here to 4 stars. I'd ordered in before from the Expat, but tonight was my first time stopping by in person. Tonight I got the same drink twice (frozen lychee marg), but the second serving tasted nothing like the first (which I originally loved), was weirdly coconutty and barely frozen. We tried two versions of the cauliflower wings -- the first firecracker wings were medium spice and we enjoyed just fine. Then we upgraded to the dragon cauliflower wings, which weren't eventually as spicy as promised and were a weird dry-rubbed texture I could do without. Both were overpriced and generally meh, though I appreciate that the veggie option is available. Service was kind of slow, but there's a decent amount of outdoor seating around the space and the service is friendly. Unfortunately we wound up at a table that was right underneath a dripping AC unit

Yelp
Went there with friends and ended up with a horrific case of food poisoning. Almost all of us ended up in the hospital. This place needs a serious investigation. Avoid at all costs unless you want to spend your night clutching a toilet bowl instead of enjoying a drink.

Yelp
The expat is a local neighborhood favorite. The Singapore noodles and the Thai basil fried rice are some of my favorite dishes and always a must. A great spot for happy hour or brunch, just a great overall time to relax without too much pressure to move along. Sometimes there are fun events happening so definitely take advantage and stay for the fun.

Yelp
Great place for good Thai food but I come here for the cocktails and nice Sake selection. Chill vibe inside. Some outdoor seating.

Yelp
The Expat is my favorite place to hang out. Awesome staff, great food and even better drinks. Not to mention the music and ambiance are always incredible. 10/10 neighborhood spot!

Yelp
BRING BACK THE MOCHI CHURROS. As someone with a gluten allergy, this was my favorite bar and now I am going to come SIGNIFICANTLY less. We didn't even get to say goodbye to them. While you're at it PLEAAAASE also bring back the pork nachos! Why are you guys doing this??? Getting rid of all the best items is so heartbreaking to us regulars.

Yelp
Friendly and attentive service. And the food was phenomenal! So delicious and great portions. Also, the music was spot-on
