Lamb & Lion | Best places to stay in York | Bucket List Travels

"If a TV crew wanted to film a drama set in 18th-century York, they could do a lot worse than choose this 300-year-old hotel with its winding, dimly-lit corridors and cosy snugs. (They’d have to hide the flatscreen TVs first, though).  It’s situated just a few minutes’ walk from York Minster, the city’s art gallery, and Theatre Royal, and right next to Bootham Bar, one of the medieval gateways to the city. History buffs should choose bedroom number 11 if they want to look straight out onto it.   The Fat Badger has atmosphere aplenty and the building, from 1758, blends in seamlessly with the city’s historic core. A quiet garden at the back, bounded by the city walls, is a welcome bonus in the summer months.  " - Will Hide

Had an amazing Sunday roast here. Staff were attentive and service speedy. Food delicious. Good wine selection. Toilets clean and cosy. The music was just perfect. Portions a good size. They had an entire roast dinner still available when I arrived at 7.35 and pudding too. Can't fault it!

Excellent food and service - rooms needing a revamp||The evening meals were excellent and the breakfast was spot on - especially the granola. ||All the staff were great. Friendly and helpful. ||The rooms however were really disappointing. I understand the price takes the location into account, which is excellent, 1 minute from York minster, however they really need some TLC. The bed sounded like it would collapse when you sat on it - although it didn’t def not the room for a romantic break! The street was extremely noisy until about 3:30am, not the fault of the hotel but the single glazed windows didn’t help. |The radiators were full of dust and fluff and the shower felt tatty although lots of piping hot water. Lovely toiletries provided, plenty tea and coffee and room cleaned and fresh towels. ||I would definitely recommend eating here. Make sure you let them know if you have a voucher for a discount as it cannot be deducted after.

We booked this for Sunday lunch for 7 people and it was really very lovely! The service was warm and welcoming, the food was great! We had Sunday lunch and between us had the Turkey, Pork and Vegetarian pie - all of them came with fantastic tasty veg and trimmings . Very very tasty and just what was needed after a weekend full of celebration and a long journey ahead to home. Well done - a worthwhile visit!

The check in ladies were a bit uninspirational but the bar staff were super and the lunch we had after we arrived was good. Top marks to the turkey crown sandwiches. Our room was right at the top of 57 steps and whilst it had a wonderful view over the rooftops to the Minster it was a bit of a climb several times a day!|The room was a bit too hot but with the window open we got the temp right. The biggest problem was the lack of light.. the room is incredibly dim even with all the lights on, it's like being in perpetual gloom. Only one bedside table was a pain and the tiny shower fills with water. |Breakfast was excellent and the location superb but I don't think we'll stay here again. We prefer their sister hotel, The Guy Fawkes Inn

I booked a table 3 months ago in the restaurant for my friends and I. It was a Christmas get together, we all live away from each other and York is the perfect place to meet. I thought the restaurant looked cosy and would be so pretty at Christmas. When we arrived we were told we had been upgraded to the pods? We didnt want a pod? We don’t want to sit in their hidden garden away from everyone, in the winter weather on a wooden picnic table covered with a thin plastic dome with a zip. I asked why we had been giving this and it became apparent that they had over booked. We were then offered a table that was still occupied, in the bar area. To make matters worse the food was truly horrible. I had the burger which had zero seasoning and the chips were so over fried they just tasted of oil. Horrible experience from start to finish

Visited the restaurant on a rainy day recently - they had some room in the bar for us which was lovely and warm. I got the pork roast which was delicious and filling. My partner had the burger which he really enjoyed. Worth a visit for a meal!

Stayed in this quirky old hotel for a few nights whilst visiting York. Had a room on the top floor which was very hot as we were having a heatwave outside. Bed was comfortable, bathroom adequate. Breakfast cooked to order and very good. Staff were friendly and efficient. Situated next to city wall and near the Minster.

A really nice place to eat, service was excellent. The food… was imo sublime, the parsnip soup was to die for! I would advise booking to get a table in the restaurant rather than at the bar however menu is the same.
