Why Chicago Is So Tough For Food Trucks | Eater Chicago

"Owned and operated by Sam Barron and his wife Sarah Weitz, this business evolved from food trucks into a multi-format operation after struggling with Chicago’s restrictive truck rules; it now includes two trucks, two food hall outposts, a full-service restaurant in Lincoln Park, another location in suburban Evanston, and an imminent beach location in Wilmette. The owners say city regulations and licensing hassles forced them to lean on food halls and brick-and-mortar venues to grow, and they continue to recount long, inefficient permitting processes and shifting inspection requirements." - Ximena N. Google
Definitely my favorite sandwich shop in the area. The staff if very friendly and they have a great menu of items. My go to is the turkey sandwich with avocado and a side of fries. Yum!

Google
I had the most delicious perfectly peppered burger at the Fat Shallot. Also my burger was perfectly grilled with fresh arugula and handmade dill pickles. The Fat Shallot has nice staff and is very clean with two different areas for outdoor seating. I recommend this place to anyone who enjoys summertime grilled foods and a nice treat!

Run, don’t walk, to this new neighborhood gem! Such a wonderful addition to Central St! Went for lunch on opening day & the counter service was warm, friendly & SO FAST!! My husband & I split the Truffle BLT & the Cheeseburger plus an order of Truffle Fries (sauce on the side for dipping, rather than the smothered version). Your kids are going to love the football table, claw machine & Pac Man video games inside along with giant Connect Four & bags outside on the sun drenched patio. You are going to enjoy excellent local beers (we had Sketchbook’s Orange Door & Half Acre’s Daisy Cutter- don’t judge our midday drink, we were celebrating our anniversary!!), beautiful decor & a quiet meal with your person because your kiddos will be too busy playing games to bother you! The food was excellent- can’t wait to try other options next time. Sit on the small Central St sidewalk patio, in the front dining room, in the back bar, or on the big back patio. Can’t go wrong! Welcome to the neighborhood Fat Shallot! We’re thrilled you’re here!!

Had a mom- son (18 mos) lunch at the Fat Shallot today. Their buffalo chicken sandwich is something I’m always craving and my son enjoyed his hot dog and fries. What’s even better than the food is the ambience and the owner Sarah’s ability to make you feel like you just walked into her kitchen at home. I am always looking for family friendly places where my kids can act like kids about be judged as their parent and this is one of those places. 🩷🩷

The Fat Shallot in Evanston, Illinois. First time here at the restuarant. Unique concise menu with easy solid choices. Manager Trevor tells me The Fat Shallot offers regular food truck visits at various locations in Chicago. You order and pay at the counter and the food is brought to your table. Trevor's enthusiasm is contagious and his knowledge of Fat Shallot's menu and locally sourced specialty foods is much appreciated. Connor was equally energized and clearly enjoys working here, which is a nice touch for diners. The decor is simple and clean, everything you need is readily available. There is also a little bar tucked away in the back featuring a game-room atmosphere with more seating. The turkey sandwich is served high on a pretzel roll. It's gourmet and tasty. The tuna melt had artichoke hearts which I LOVE and munster cheese standard, plus I added american......sooo good. It isn't typical tuna salad mix but simply tuna plus special aioli on the toasted rye which I enjoyed. They have some fantastic high-end stone ground mustard seed you might like to sample. You must try the whole dill pickle. It isn't mushy and limp like most places but quite crunchy with a salty twinge which rounds out each bite of your sandwich. Delicious tomato bisque soup was cream-based, savory and served HOT - the croutons had a yummy crisp buttery finish. For desert, Trevor insisted we try the caramel horchata crunch ice cream bar and it surely was creamy, decadent, rich and worth our time! Connor suggested the massive chocolate chip cookie so of course we got two for the road. And they too did not disappoint. So glad we happened upon the Fat Shallot and we look forward to seeing them again soon.

Google
I enjoy the various events they do but the food Is ridiculously priced for what you get. My husband and I split a burger, my kid got a hot dog, add two cocktails and our bill was $76. INSANE for walk up service.

Google
Was a little sketchy at first since they were one of the few restaurants open on Sunday during the Big10 wrestling finals. Place had a run, and we're quoting some pretty hefty wait times. Ultimately, our food came out really quickly, and the black peppercorn aioli on the smash burger needs to be experienced by all. Order at the counter and then take a seat. It's worth it.

Google
Really cool space. Dining in front, party in back with the juke box, video games and the bar! And a really nice outdoor courtyard in the back. I've had the buffalo chicken sandwich at Gilson Beach before, so I had to try it at this new location. It's perfect, great buffalo spice and little slices of celery and ranch dressing. YUM! I paired it with their delicious fries. You have to come and try this.

Yelp
So good! I definitely will be back! Really really great lunch and late night food. Simple menu means that everything served ironed out the details is delicious and works together. The BLT was the highlight for me, with the chipotle aioli that came with the cheese curds also standing out. Grilled cheese was also great, and the Arnold Palmer was fantastic on the hot day. Staff was super nice and love how bright and modern the inside was as well. Great place I definitely will be returning to.

Yelp
We brought a group of about 30 people here for a summer work outing. There was a bit of a hiccup with seating when we arrived, but the staff handled it quickly and got us settled on the patio. Grace and the team were kind, responsive, and made it work, which I really appreciated. The food was fantastic. The sliders, fries, and apps were all crowd-pleasers. Everything came out hot and fresh, and the pacing was solid given the size of our group. The vibe was fun and low-key, which was exactly what we were hoping for. If you're planning a casual event or just looking for a reliable spot to eat and hang out, I'd definitely recommend The Fat Shallot. We'd absolutely come back.

Yelp
Definitely my favorite sandwich shop in the area. The staff if very friendly and they have a great menu of items. My go to is the turkey sandwich with avocado and a side of fries. The staff is very friendly and there's enough seating for the entire crew. Highly recommended!

Yelp
I've been back yet again for trivia, which I wish they did more often. Now that the patio is open, I'm excited to come back (and use our free appetizer coupon we won at trivia last time). The food and drinks are great, the vibes are on-point, and the staff is friendly. I'm also curious to come here for some of their live music and other events.

Yelp
Ambiance: I'd say this is a trendy kind of place. Sort of shabby chic deco, getting a coastal vibe meets the 50s. Very clean environment. Everything looks pretty new. There is a bar in the back which we didn't go to, large screen TVs. Service: Very quick service. You have to take your own menu and then order at the register. They don't take 100s though, Even though my order was $88. So no large bills here. Super friendly employees, positive attitudes all around. Food. Truffle BLT 4.0 stars. The bacon was a little too crispy. I've never said that before about bacon but it was. Needs a sauce with a little more flavor. The bread was spot on. Super crispy not soggy at all, fresh ingredients. It was nice. Truffle fries: 5.0 stars. Very good. Perfectly cooked. Chicken fingers: 4.5 stars. Cookie: 3.5 stars. My kid says it would be better if it was warmed.

Yelp
Great neighborhood place. We came for lunch on a hot summer Saturday. Got the truffle BLT (which I had tried at their satellite shop at Sterling Food Hall downtown and Food truck!), but also got the Buffalo chicken sandwich and cheese curds!! All delish! Best part is the cute lil bar in the back where we got some ice cold beers to go with our food - great space! Staff was friendly and quick! Will come back soon!

Yelp
I just had the same experience as another reviewer with the restaurant closing ahead of the posted time and turned me away at 7:55pm. Very rude and unacceptable. No apology or excuse was offered.

Yelp
I finally made it to their brick and mortar in Evanston today. I had my usual, the BLT. My son had the burger with cheese. Both sandwiches were delicious the burger had great grill flavor and was juicy; it came with two patties. For drinks I had the ginger lemonade, which was so good with a ginger aftertaste. If you like ginger, you'll like this. My son had a fountain soda. We also ordered the truffle fries. I thought there was more to the truffle than sauce. I would've liked some shaved truffles over top, especially for the upcharge. I paid $48 for our two sandwiches, an order of fries and drinks. This was an expensive lunch. I see this as a special occasion place for lunch and not a regular spot for food. The restaurant was light and attractive. They also had outdoor seating. Very fitting for a place in Evanston.

Yelp
While very busy on a Friday night (and very kid-friendly), we luckily were able to snag the last T able up front when the back room was very loud and the outdoor patio was full. The food was solid, with very generous portions, and priced fairly. We'd definitely return or place an order for carry-out!

Yelp
Awesome, family and kid-friendly spot! Same menu of delicious sandwiches you expect from the Fat Shallot after over a decade as a food truck. Turkey and buffalo chicken were chefs kiss favorites and the salad is really good as well. Tons of stuff for the little ones to do and always other kids to play with as well. Trevor was a super friendly bartender and big thanks to him for turning us into the frozen gin and tonic which was an instant classic on such a hot day. Only suggestion to the owners is some signage that says there's a bar in the back as we passed it over when walking by because from the sidewalk it only seems like a sandwich shop.

Yelp
I loved this place when I lived closer to the Revival Food Hall location, so now that this is near our current place, I'm elated! If you like BLTs, you MUST try the Truffle BLT. It's insane...I crave it! I look forward to going back to try other items like the burger and the turkey. The fries are good, too, but the sauce we got with the black sesame seeds is one we'll skip next time. Also looking forward to attending one of their trivia nights! The space is really light and airy up front and the back room has a full bar with windows overlooking the outdoor space. Excited to try that out next summer! Service was good and the food didn't take long at all to be prepared and brought out to us. Plus, this location has beer if you want to imbibe. (Probably more but I wasn't looking to drink that day.)

Yelp
Quality sandwiches in a cute space. Burger needed a little salt. Friendly folks handling carryout.

Yelp
$10 for a 6 ounce cup of beer Everything on the website was not on the menu Brought the wrong food and had to wait 12 more minutes No receipts Trash on the ground Very rude Brought a BLT but forgot about the lettuce and tomato No Sprite No Coke No ice tea They were out of their special Yeah, they're fat Only reason that they're getting people is because they're in a fantastic spot I had a bellyache for six days after that and I went to the doctors and they said that I possibly got a food poisoning from them
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Holy crap this food is good! However, then you thrown in the bar tending skills of TC???=!my new favorite Evanston place!!
google avatar

Ritti T.

Yelp
I got the cheese curds and the truffle BLT to go. I wanted to love this place because I'm such a big fan of truffle mayo but the BLT did not live up to the expectations. They didn't put enough truffle mayo and the avocado was so brown it turned me off to eating it. The cheese curds were okay, wasn't melty as I like them usually to be. Maybe I didn't choose the right items. I'll eventually give them another try but it won't be a first choice
google avatar

Yelp
I have been eating Fat Shallot on and off for years, starting at their Revival location. Back in the day, they were on Mealpal so I was getting truffle BLTs every week! Well anyway, let's just say I have a physical dependence on them now. I now rarely go downtown, which is why I was so happy to see this place open near my new home on the north side. The space is clean and beautiful and quite big. The eating area in the front is cute, and the big room in the back has the bar. I got my usual BLT and a beer and enjoyed them there. Meanwhile, we noticed that they have trivia, so we'll be back for that. I really hope this location does well and Fat Shallot continues to thrive. Next time I'm in, I plan to try the burger to see if it can even compare in deliciousness to the BLT. I'll update when I do!

Yelp
Very nice space. Fast casual food that is elevated with some unique sides and sauces and an impressive wine/beer list. This used to be the Old Neighborhood Grill but now it has a bright, clean, beach-y vibe. I brought my teenager and his friends here for an early Friday night dinner, but will come back for a night out with my friends as this is a friendly and casual place to just relax, eat and catch up. No TVs in the front space, there was a low pitched (you could hear yourself and your companions speaking) mix playing and there was no overspill from the bar area. It kind of feels like a big living room. The grilled cheese was fantastic (get it with the bacon!) and they make a really good french fry. Hamburgers were praised by the teenagers in my group. There is a delicious truffle aioli sauce that you can eat with anything there. It's especially good on the cheese curds. There is a bar area in the back and a patio where there is live music in the warmer weather. Order at the counter and they bring your food out. Be sure and try to the Ginger Lemonade. And shout out to the front of house manager, who is really glad you are there and so warm and friendly. We will be back because I am very curious about the Spicy Sesame Fries and actually really want to have a burger myself and the ones the kids ordered looked delightful.

Jessica L.

Yelp
No where on the website states that the kitchen closes at 8pm. Everything thing says closes at 10pm. I went and was in the store at 7:55pm. And was told I could not order food due to the kitchen closing at 8. Overall the food is great just needed better communication.

David M.

Yelp
Great food. Love the burgers and most of the apps. You have to try the chicken sandwich as well. Frozen margs were great too

Yelp
Stellar local restaurant. We were visiting friends who live in the area and frequent The Fat Shallot (amazing name). You order at the counter, then they bring out to you. I had the truffle BLT. Chef's kiss. What a lovely sandwich! I added caramelized onions to mine, and I recommend it. As a self-proclaimed connoisseur of brussel sprouts, I believe they could've used at minimum a lemon/lime wedge for a squirt and at max a balsamic drizzle as they read a little dry. Regardless, the mains, the drinks, the service, and the vibe were all on point. I would not hesitate to come back.

Yelp
My new favorite restaurant in Evanston and an awesome addition to the neighborhood. They've completely redesigned the old dark space into a warm, welcoming scene. The front is the main dining area, with a cozy bar in the back and an awesome patio that has live music. I've been there a bunch of times since it opened and every item on the menu is excellent. It's tasty comfort food - think sandwiches, fries, Brussel sprouts. My favorite items are the truffle BLT and the homemade slaw, but it's a hard choice because it's all so good. Major bonus for this turning into a neighborhood spot that's super kid-friendly. I love coming here on Friday night and running into family friends!
google avatar

Yelp
Cute sandwich shop with some tasty food. I tried the shrimp po' boy and my daughter had the turkey sandwich. We tried the spicy sesame fries which were tasty but the heat kept building so we were unable to finish them. The ginger lemonade was really interesting. Will definitely be back again.

Yelp
Awesome food. Awesome staff. Fun ambience. Great neighborhood spot. So glad that this establishment is around.

Yelp
My wife and I really enjoyed this place. Very cool atmosphere with a cool little bar in the back and a cool looking patio. They have games for the kids to play so it's kid friendly. The service was really good and everyone was extremely nice. I got the po boy and sandwich and my wife got the blt. Both were very good. There was great flavor and everything was cool great. This is definitely a place that we will return to and would highly recommend this place to anyone that is in the area or anyone looking for a fun and tasty experience.

Yelp
Mixed feelings but overall enjoy the food here. Each time I've come Ive ordered something different. My only beef is with the Tuna Melt. The tomato soup is incredible! Reminds me of the tomato soup from the Noddle in Wilmette (rip). Burger is delish but with it was a little greasier honestly. I added the grilled onions and it was awesome. Fries are incredible as well! Really nice fry, crispy crunch on the outside but soft in the middle and seasoned well. The tuna melt is where I have problems...when you think of a tuna melt you think mayo, cheese, onions, pickles. Idk what I received but it was none of those things. Rye bread was a choice. Dry ass tuna with no mayo. I think they spread whole grain mustard on the bread which was a choice. The arugula was not bad and may have been nice if the rest of the sandwich was correct. My BIGGEST issue with this sandwich was the ARTICHOKES!! Who puts artichokes on a tuna melt?! I mean why not just throw in the kitchen sink while you're at it. Needless to say I ate the sandwich. If it wasn't supposed to be a tuna melt I probably would've like it.

Luca H.

Yelp
Great BLT!! Even better ambiance. A sandwich shop I am going to make a staple lunch spot!

Angela M.

Yelp
I'm going to be honest, I didn't know anything about Fat Shallot when I heard it was going to give food on our film set. But after having that turkey sandwich, Fat Shallot has become my go to sandwich spot! The staff are so kind and I now enjoy sitting in for a quick bite during lunch breaks.

Grace H.

Yelp
We love coming to The Fat Shallot! They have something for everyone in the family & we have made coming here a weekly tradition. With bingo, trivia nights and live music, there is always something fun happening here. The outside patio is perfect and the staff is always so kind and helpful.
google avatar

Yelp
Went in around lunchtime on a Friday after seeing they had a truffle blt and truffle fries, that's exactly what I ordered, plus a beer. Service was pretty quick and you order/pay in front of where the food is prepared. They offer quick bites in a pretty decently sized restaurant with a front dining area, back dining area with a bar(no bartender when I went) and a nice spacious back patio area. I'm not in Evanston too often but if I'm looking to fulfill my hunger and thirst quickly when I am, I'll be sure to stop by. It was all on point and flavorful. The only things I wish is they had a bartender at that time I went and more bacon (everyone probably does) on my sandwich.

Naya H.

Yelp
Had the best grilled cheese of my life and also received the best service and kindness from them while on a film set at Northwestern. Super nice people and delicious food! The grilled cheese & the turkey sandwich are BOMB!
google avatar

Keely J.

Yelp
We've used catering services twice in a year for family birthday parties and the food is always a hit! Sandwiches are great and the salads are delish. Owners are the kindest folks and service is always fast, responsive and thoughtful. We love Fat Shallot.

UnscriptedLove P.

Yelp
Literally the best sandwiches in Evanston. Staff was amazing. Also, they have vegan and gluten-free friendly options which is hard to find in Evanston.

Perfect Woman P.

Yelp
Best fries I have every tried in Evanston. Staff was friendly. Cute spot to bring n kids

Yelp
Soooooooooooooo gooooooooooooooood. Such a fun vibe. Went will all my friends. Had a great time

Yelp
Just went back for an eat-in visit. I just couldn't help myself. I carried-out only a week ago, but wanted to go back and try some more of their delicious food, so I took my daughter to lunch. I ordered their Truffle BLT, and an order of Spicy Sesame Fries with Aioli and a Ginger Lemonade to cool things down. The truffle BLT was amazing, with more bacon than I could shake a stick at (who's shaking sticks at bacon?)... the bacon was thick and crunchy, the bread was wonderful and everything was super flavourful. The fries were spicy and the aioli had a nice kick to it. And if I was expecting the Ginger lemonade to cool things off I was nicely surprised, because the ginger had its own kick. Sarah, one of the owners, came over and to say "hi" (she is so nice and friendly), and my visit was just so pleasant and I'm just so pleased that have become a new member of the Central street family. Try it, you'll like it!

Gini O.

Yelp
I highly recommend Fat Shallot-my 16 yo daughter and I had a wonderful experience there this weekend. The staff is very kind, efficient and hospitable. The food was fantastic-special kudos for the burgers and the best Brussel sprouts I've ever had--so yummy. Very good chocolate chip cookie to top It off. We purposely ordered a lot to test several items so we finished up our leftovers for dinner at home. We will be back and hope to hit their new Wednesday Trivia Night! Give them a try!

Applause F.

Yelp
Ambiance and service was great. Our team really enjoyed eating here. Fun times. Love their ginger lemonade and avocado and tomato sandwich

Steve J.

Yelp
Place is setup nicely, but menu is EXTREMELY limited. The one item that interested me, from at old menu, a shrimp po' boy, was no longer on the menu. Food was average, at best. Could not taste truffle in the truffle BLT. Truffle fries were OK, but had a strange white sauce. Beer is expensive.
google avatar

George V.

Yelp
Poor service for a small business. Took 10 minutes to even get to taking my order on a lunch break. Never again. I would not even recommend the food. You can get tastier fries at McDonald's.
google avatar

Naomi A.

Yelp
Food was thrown on the plate . Served Fe was slow but nice . It seem like it could be like a happy to go place but I was not impressed with anyone trying to have a fresh effect!

Karice S.

Yelp
Last weekend, I was involved in the production of Asking For It- a Northwestern student film. As Unit Production Manager, it was my job to find food for the cast and crew over those days. The Fat Shallot helped me give everyone a large lunch for the last day of our first weekend of filming. It was nice to be able to end our weekend on such a good note! The people there were extremely helpful and accommodating when planning my order, and everyone on set was so happy with the food! The turkey sandwiches were so delicious! Thank you so much for your help!

Gerry G.

Yelp
Mediocre food with matching service. I hope they can improve. Drinks aren't bad. Only one or two menu items are good.

Sharon S.

Yelp
Great food, friendly service, good for kids and adults. Definitely want to get the fries.
google avatar

Angelica D.

Yelp
The menu was limited. Not much to choose from. Not the healthiest place to eat if you're watching your diet. The food was greasy but it depends on what you order. I got the BLT and it was greasy. My husband got the shrimp sandwich and it was bland. No sauce. Just bread and shrimp. And it was a little pricey.
google avatar

Erika D.

Yelp
The place is perfect for outdoor lunch. Great atmosphere, nice patio and friendly service. The food was delicious. Also love the bar service to the patio.
google avatar

Yelp
As often as I return Amazon packages at the UPS store right next door, I just noticed this restaurant that's been opened since fall 2023! Standing outside it looked large, clean and so pretty I just had to check it out. Traditional American menu and I could have just went home and made a grill cheese w/ bacon and fries, but sometimes you just wanna eat out. My meal was hot, delicious, and plated & presented very well. Friendly people work here too. I will definitely be back and will tell others. Great location. They will do well!

Mila K.

Yelp
love the food here so much!! I had the vegetarian sandwich and it was so good like caprese vibes

Ned B.

Yelp
Nice outdoor space and KID FRIENDLY. Service was great as well -- iced mugs is a nice tough for beers. Food was average.

Yelp
Best best best!!!! This spot is exactly what we needed here in Evanston! A friendly neighborhood spot with great food, great drinks and the best company!!!!!! You have to check it out!
