This will sound worse than I intend, but The Fin initially wasn't our first choice when we were searching for hotels for my buddy's wedding. Rather, my friends and I had originally planned on staying at The Seabird a few blocks over like so many of the other guests...until we saw the rate. Sorry, but ~$400 a night before the weekend festivities were even set to begin? Not so coincidentally, that just so happened to be right around when The Fin suddenly shot up to the top of our list! Huh...imagine that.
Much like Hilton's other Tapestry Collection properties, The Fin has a more unique vibe than your typical hotel. At the same time, it's also a bit of an outlier, as it's a boutique hotel in an older, renovated building (their name is presumably a nod to their predecessor here, The Dolphin). Knowing that, and after checking out photos of the hotel online, I already knew that the amenities (and that the rooms) were going to be on the modest side. For example, the "business center" is just a computer set up on a small desk and there's no pool to lie out by, though they do have a quaint rooftop patio and a shuffleboard table in the "lobby".
As far as the aforementioned room goes, it similarly lacks a lot of bells and whistles. In a sense, it almost felt like walking into a studio apartment - the bathroom is immediately to your left, the closet to your right, and the sink acts as a pseudo wall to enclose the bed area. That being said, it's also not a huge deal if you're not going to be in the room very much. Plus, all of the essentials are still accounted for - A/C, in-room wi-fi, decently comfortable bedding/mattress, hairdryer, iron, ironing board, toiletries, a safe, extra pillows, coffee machine, mini fridge, etc.

While there may not have been anything particularly awful about the room, there were definitely some shortcomings - one of the bedside lamps was out, there weren't many usable outlets (the one under the desk was fully utilized), and there wasn't any overhead lighting in the bed area. Granted, there seemed to be an upward facing fixture in the headboard, but nothing turned on when I flicked what I assume was the power switch. I also didn't like how they push you to create a Hilton Honors account to log onto the wi-fi (or risk potential fees), but my biggest issue was with how thin the ceilings and walls were. Even from the back of my room, I could hear the conversations by the front desk, as well as in the room next door, and the footsteps of the people upstairs. Yet, ironically, I didn't hear much of the traffic out on the street, which was actually my initial concern, so points for that.
In all, while I didn't love every aspect of my stay at The Fin, I certainly didn't think it was an awful experience. My issues were by no means critical and, considering how they were cheaper than other nearby hotels, worth enduring to save some cash. I might feel otherwise if the rates had been higher, but in the end, they still satisfied all of my basic needs out of a hotel (clean room, cheap rate, etc.), albeit without giving me a compelling reason to return. Although, I will absolutely come back to the attached coffee shop/restaurant next door, The Switchboard - it's so good!
