The Best-in-Class Spots to Eat Fish and Chips in Ireland

"Operated by the Flannery family whose boat, the Cú Na Mara, supplies much of the catch, this harbourside takeaway with indoor and outdoor seating draws queues for its seafood-focused menu. The buffalo hake bites served with a Cashel blue cheese dipping sauce have a cult following, and the Sharing Box is a popular sampler that combines monkfish goujons, breaded sole strips, chips cut from Maharees potatoes, and the Cú Na Mara’s catch-of-the-day, breaded and deep-fried." - Taras Grescoe

A Local’s Guide to Kerry, Ireland

"Fish Box, a sustainable restaurant that epitomizes the county's sea-to-table ethos. It’s run by a local fishing family whose boat Cú Na Mara (Hound of the Sea) is part of the Fishing for Litter campaign, which enlists fishermen to collect plastics, debris, and abandoned fishing gear to be recycled back at the port. Try the crispy chili monkfish, buttermilk-infused fish of the day tacos, and porcupine-jumbo prawns in a panko breadcrumb."

We ate at The Fishbox two nights in a row and although they don’t do reservations, we only had to wait about 10-20 minutes and then they had a table ready for us. The food we had was amazing and we had a very short waiting time in between ordering and the food arriving at our table. The staff is extremely friendly and overall the restaurant is amazing! We also ordered takeaway twice, which was great as well!

If you're in Dingle and craving fish and chips, The Fish Box is an absolute must—especially if you're gluten-free. I was blown away by how good everything was. The fish was perfectly crispy, golden, and flavorful, and the chips were just the right kind of chunky and satisfying. Best of all? The gluten-free batter was so good, you'd never guess it was anything but classic. Despite the place being packed (a good sign!), the service was impressively quick. We only waited about 10 minutes for a table, and once seated, our food came out fast and piping hot. Portions were generous—definitely come hungry or be ready to share.

Google
Easily the best restaurant in Dingle. Went there twice in the three days we were in Dingle. Delicious fresh fish, friendly staff and great location. It’s really busy tho, we were lucky we didn’t have to wait but go prepared. Only problem is the ladies bathroom, as soon as I entered it smells really bad of mold (both times I went), and when I was washing my hand I noticed why: the ceiling is covered in mold, in urgent need of cleaning and care.

Google
What an amazing dining experience. Stopped for lunch in , while on a bus tour, and wondered if it would be worth the 10 minute walk from the drop off. Oh my!!!! So grateful we made the walk! The fish tacos and spice box gave us so much food, that was so good. We started with a shared cup of chowder, which was absolutely the best we’ve ever eaten. Thank you Fish Box!

Google
Delicious dinner in Dingle that hit all the right spots: warm bowl of chowder, fish & chips, and cocktails. Everything tasted fresh & portion sizes were more than plenty. We stopped by 6pm to put our names down for a table for 2, got seated within 30 minutes. If you have a chance to eat in Dingle, make this a destination!

Google
Came here on a Wednesday night around 1700, wait time was 30 minutes and they were true to their promise. Service is quick. We ordered calamari, fish tacos and kids fish and chips. The calamari was seasoned with Cajun spices and it was actually spicy. The fish tacos were actually delicious. My only complaint is the chips..too thick but that’s a personal preference.

Google
Delicious and great service! Though there was a massive wait, I was able to get right in because they had a small booth type nook available, since I was solo. The fish tacos were phenomenal! Fish was super fresh and flaky. And the two tacos were more than enough for one person. I couldn't even finish the fries. Which were also perfectly crisp on the outside and tender in the middle. Was a wonderful meal.

Google
If you need to eat gluten free - or even if you don’t! - the gluten free fish & chips, as well as the GF chowder at the Fish Box are heavenly! I don’t need to eat gluten free (my wife does), and I can state that the Fish Box’s GF battered fish is as good as any regular fish I’ve ever had. The fish itself was perfectly fresh - they get it from their own trawler - and delicious. The service was warm, welcoming, fast and efficient, and the prices were reasonable. We’re just visiting Dingle for a few days, but it’s so good we’ll be coming back for more.

Yelp
Everything about The Fish Box is 5 stars. The food is all fresh and local. The family run business starts on their boat where they source their seafood. We ordered the dinner box for 2, a delightful sampler of fish, shrimp and calamari. This turned out to be more than we could possibly eat. We also shared a cup of their seafood chowder, which is loaded with yumminess. The service was attentive without hovering and the decor is fresh and clean. They don't do reservations. We arrived just before 6 pm and waited less than 20 min for a table. When we left an hour later, I heard the hostess tell customers coming in the waiting was 90 minutes. This was on a Tuesday in May. I highly recommend The Fish Box

Yelp
I was excited by all the great reviews but for some reason all the food items we tried missed the mark. It was the tasting box with calamari monk fish etc plus chips. The fries were actually inedible and I love even cold fries so that's a huge statement ... they actually smelled like chemicals? Also not cooked enough. The fish was ok the batter fine. Just not a ton of flavor. I didn't like any of the calamari or monk fish - they all looked / tasted about the same . The coconut (?) shrimp was decent hard to mess that up. I left rather hungry. Oh and the calamari had like long stringy skin pieces you couldn't bite thru so you had to like skin it I- was kind of grossed out. Three stars because the place is super cute I loved the bathroom wallpaper and tier service was excellent

Yelp
We wanted to try to avoid some of the crowds and checked in at the Fish Box for an early dinner. The wait lasted around half an hour which wasn't too long. Notification was via a text message and international phone numbers were no issue. Once seated we already had an idea of what we wanted from the menu which listed a decent selection of fried and non fried choices. The crispy chilli hake started out as a sweet and crispy dish but after a while this sauce just overpowered the meal. I think it would've been better to get the sauce on the side and consume to my liking. The fish box was more than enough variety to get a taste for their "submerged" seafood menu. Crisp and hot. Our server was very friendly and did a good job with updates on our order, fast delivery from the kitchen and check ins after our food was served.

Yelp
The staff was very attentive and friendly at this popular family run business. They offer a shareable seafood platter that we enjoyed along with a cup of chowder and crab arancini. The soup was delicious. The arancini were crispy and tasty but seemed a bit pricey for 3 pieces. The seafood platter was good but the calamari, while cooked perfectly were on the soggy side. They were not as delicious and crispy as the fish and shrimp on the platter. The restaurant is tastefully decorated and was very busy. We were there on a holiday weekend and felt lucky to get a table at lunchtime

Yelp
Sorry but this was not a 5 star experience. Not that anything was particularly wrong but after reading these reviews and waiting 1.5 hours i was expecting more. This is just good Irish fish and chips (and other fried bits) but with a long wait attached. FWIW If I had just walked in with no expectations I would have still given 4 stars. That said the service again was ok, not bad or great. The restsurant was busy and clean and they didn't dally bussing tables so that part of the experience was good. Overall the restaurant seemed clean and presented well.

Yelp
This was the favorite meal of our whole trip in Ireland! My husband had seafood chowder nearly every night and this one was the most flavorful and chock-full of different types of seafood. The pan fried hake was also fantastic - incredibly fresh fish and a delicious garlic sauce. The restaurant was quite busy but service was still attentive and timely. The nautical decor made for a fun ambience, especially given the fish is caught locally on the Dingle Peninsula!

Yelp
No pics but we waited an hour (Make reservations) for a spot at 7pm on a Wednesday night....- it's summer and high season so there's that. The fish tacos were great / we also had the Burger and she said it was good but was a bit pricey overall for nice again fried good...

Yelp
The fish box was a nice and relatively casual place to eat within dingle! When we came, there were several families! Food: we ordered the fish and chips and chicken sandwich and both were really good! The fish and chips were not as greasy as they normally are! Service: great service! Our waitress was so friendly! Ambience: low key, casual ambience!

Yelp
One of my favorite meals I had in Ireland. Monkfish was out of this world, amazing drinks and sides as well.
google avatar

Mel D.

Yelp
Service was prompt and cordial. We had 4 dif entrees, and they were all flavorful. Bustling spot with what looked to be happy customers. We also wandered around the church nearby. Pretty grounds.

Yelp
Holy O'Shit! One of the Top 2 Chowders I've ever eaten! Had the Fish and Chips and my wife had the Fish Box.... Both were great. But the Chowder.... Amazing! Dingle is a cool destination and Ireland was been awesome, but I will truly always remember this chowder.

Yelp
Mediocre, forgettable food OK service High prices Not worth the hype Followed Yelp and online reviews and was disappointed in the entire experience ask a local for a recommendation
google avatar

Cheryl D.

Yelp
Service was okay. The ambience would be good. The food was average for the price. The wait was rather long to get in. I am not sure that I would return.

Yelp
Quite simply the best seafood I've ever had in my life. I had this meal 5 years ago and I still think about it. I had the The Fish Box...fried fish, prawns, calamari-the best versions of that I've ever tasted. In every possible way, this place is worth it. Destination eating. I may just have to travel back to Dingle just to re-visit the Fish Box. Thank you for providing a life changing (ruining?) meal.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely amazing. We stopped based on a recommendation from the Old Weir Inn in Killarney. Really glad we did. I had the monkfish goujons, some of the best and freshest fish I've ever had. Meat was the texture of perfectly cooked lobster. W doesn't eat fish but agreed to indulge me. The place didn't have an overly fishy smell suggesting very fresh fish, which was a plus for her. And her chicken sandwich didn't disappoint. Very large portion of chicken under bacon and melted cheese. Staff was extremely friendly. You could tell they enjoyed being part of the crew. Definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
While visiting the Dingle Peninsula I wanted to enjoy the local delicacy: Fish & Chips. Also, The Fish Box harvests their catch off their own boat! Talk about really local. The Fish Box came up in a search and when I tried to go for dinner it was a busy crowd unfortunately, I walked in just as they were closing the kitchen (Pro Tip: they stop serving 30 minutes before closing.) I came back the next day for another attempt and was successful: only a five-minute wait to turn around a table, which I did in a seating area outside next to their to-go/pickup window. I ordered the Fish Box which was a combo of fried fish, calamari, and shrimp served with chips and a side salad. Here's the breakdown: Fish: Fried tempura style and adorned with spices- I've never seen that before! Enjoyed the different style of fry compared to what is typically done back in the US Calamari: Long rings of squid with really nice breading and a great spice- probably the highlight of the combo for me Shrimp: I thought they were shrimp but were probably prawns, they were large and had that prawn taste vs. shrimp Chips: Needs salt but typical thick cuts of potato Salad: Spring mix with cherry tomatoes The box came with tartar and a remoulade/comeback style sauce which were good companions for the combo. Good portions- I took some of it home for a bonus meal later. The Fish Box lives up to its reputation as Dingle's go-to fish eatery. A great option when you want something a more mid-tier/casual sit-down experience vs. the fancier restaurants you'll find in Dingle.

Yelp
Servers amazing, food fresh and delicious and the place is spotless right down to the bathrooms. Definitely worth a stop

Yelp
This is a must stop while visiting Dingle. We enjoyed the "shared box" for two...although it could have easily fed three. The wait staff and hostess were professional. The prices were very reasonable for fresh fish! I highly recommend visiting this establishment!

Tim G.

Yelp
Very busy, packed for dinner on a Tuesday night. We waited about 20 minutes to get in. Great atmosphere. The kitchen was a bit rushed with all the people to serve. My fish and chips were warm, not hot, the chips a bit soggy. The fish chowder was out of this world. Not to be missed!
google avatar

Yelp
Attention everyone- it is so gratifying when Service and Magical Food come together- the staff made our evening an exceptional experience- very accommodating and attentive- Thank You , Thank You You are the highlight of our trip to Dingle, we will come back Torcuato

Yelp
The restaurant was packed when we arrived, but we were offered two seats at the bar instead of waiting for a table. We started off by ordering two Gin Fizzes, made with local Dingle gin. I had completely forgotten that a gin fizz is made with egg whites, which my husband is allergic to, but they were so understanding and offered to make him a new one sans egg and gave me the other on the house. The drinks were delicious, as was the food: we started with a half portion of the seafood chowder, which was full of fresh seafood, and then had the fish and chips and goujons for our mains. The portions were huge! We could have easily shared one and been satisfied. Overall, great food, great service, and a wonderful experience.

Yelp
I want all of the calamari I have for the rest of my life to be like this HUGE Cajun calamari . Our entrees, Thai Chili Monkfish and Fish & Chips were also excellent. We walked into the Fish Box and were told it would be a two hour wait, the quaint restaurant only has 6 tables and does not take reservations so I assume this is common. The hostess was very kind and told us to check back in an hour to an hour and a half and we were able to snag a table a little early. So happy they were able to squeeze us in! My Thai chili monkfish was out of my comfort zone (I'm not a big seafood gal), but I was pleasantly surprised at how tender the fish was and how flavorful the sauce made it. The fish and chips were some of our favorites from our trip. Definitely stop into Fish Box if you're in Dingle.

Yelp
Catching up on Yelp reviews as I visited back in October. The Fish Box is rated as one of the best place to get Fish n Chips in Ireland so this was high on my list. We arrived at opening on a Wednesday and we were one of the last groups to get a seat without having to wait. The place was full right at opening on a weekday. Ambiance is very well lit with natural lighting and the place is very small with about 6 tables. We ended up ordering the fish box to share and it was lot of food. It came with Goujons, Calamari, and Scampi. It was all delicious! The chips were also very crispy, salty, and tasty. This was definitely my favorite fish n chips on our trip. The curry sauce and the tartare sauce were very good! Prices were cheap at about €15/entree and service was great! Overall, The Fish Box was a must try if you in Dingle!
google avatar

Yelp
Very good spot in Dingle for a quick lunch! The seafood was so fresh and breading thickness was perfect. Every plate does come with A LOT of food so be prepared to leave here extremely full in the best way! Service was great! Patio was beautiful on a summer day. Overall great experience and would recommend to anyone passing through here.

Yelp
Came here for dinner for 2 on a Tuesday evening around 5 pm and we didn't have to wait at all! We came because we saw they had vegetarian options, one of the only places in Dingle that we could find many vegetarian options! we got the vegetarian burrito bowl and the arancini and shared both. The arancini itself was well flavored, but I wasn't a huge fan of the cold veggies that they were placed on. Also wished there was a garlicky sauce or something they served it with! The burrito bowl had all the correct pieces! The chili , rice, lettuce, cheese, etc was all perfectly placed and the portion was quite generous. Ingredients all tasted so fresh and I enjoyed eating this. I once again wished there was a hot sauce or something that it was served with, but it was pretty good overall :) felt so good after eating this. What really took this review to 5 stars was the service. Service was AMAZING, everyone was so sweet, service was really fast, and the environment was really welcoming. Best service I've experienced in all of Ireland during my week trip here! Thanks to everyone at fish box for this lovely dinner.

Yelp
So for a person that doesn't love seafood (I know I'm weird) this place was probably one of my favorites in Ireland. I had the bird box sandwich and it was the best chicken sandwich of my entire life (yes better than CFA), I will be dreaming about this chicken for a very long time.
google avatar

Dave M.

Yelp
Very busy spot, had to wait 30 mins for our table for lunch. But that gave us hope that the meal would be a home run. Actually, was average. Hard to find something not fried, so more healthy choices would be nice. While the food was good, was probably overpriced for the quality. Good place, just not great.
google avatar

Karen M.

Yelp
Such good fish, very welcoming, amd we are very full!! This a pic of the fish box for 2, kudos to the chef and the fishermen
google avatar

Krys G.

Yelp
On point for a satisfying lunch in Dingle. Nice hike up the street away from the water. We had the calamari, fish & chips, chowder and the chicken burger and all were solid, hot and fresh. It's walk-in only, so you'll take your chances on wait, but it's worth it.

Helen C R.

Yelp
Staff great! Cute place busy... Fish Balls amazing Calamari Appetizer was not cooked long enough. I think trying for speed rather than quantity
google avatar

Jared O.

Yelp
First time here today , what a nice cosy restaurant with such attentive staff , thank you . My friends and I had a delightful lunch , fish and chips , tacos and spicy monkfish , very very tasty and so unique. Yes one of my friends had the chowder we all tasted it, so delicious. Go try this restaurant you will love it .

Sophia K.

Yelp
I have NEVER had such delicious clam chowder. And I am a huge fan of Monterey Bay, CA classic chowder in sourdough bread. Come here. Try their seafood chowder. Take a lactose/gluten pill and try it. It can get a bit busy and crowded but find yourself a corner and just enjoy your food!
google avatar

Tim X.

Yelp
If you're visiting from out of the country (especially US), this place will change everything you know about fish and chips. We got takeout here on a rainy day while visiting Dingle (would've loved to sit, but they were at capacity and the wait was long and stomachs couldn't wait). We ordered the chowder, the fish box, and a side of mushy peas. The chowder was incredible and warmed the bones on this cold, dreary day. The portion of seafood in the fish box was awesome, and the fried fish was incredibly light. I think too often fish and chips in other places are battered and fried to death. This was a welcome change and how fish and chips should be. Skip the mushy peas though, tasted like baby food (although the Irish might love it). Great value and definitely worth a stop in Dingle.
google avatar

Todd S.

Yelp
Fair quality fried food. More of an assembly line than anything. Good for tourists I guess.

Anthony R.

Yelp
The chowder was good enough and service was good. We got the fish box and the fried calamari was limp and not appealing. Same thing with the fries. Very disappointed as this came so highly recommended.

Jim E.

Yelp
Rather modest looking from the street but people were lined up to get in for lunch before they opened. Wait until you get inside. Very well done decor and nice, clean bathrooms. We had a group of 9 and they sat us at 2 adjacent tables so it worked out well. I had the fish n chips which was perfect. The others all paired up and had the shared seafood platters. Again everyone loved it. 100% recommend this restaurant, just get there early!

Dave B.

Yelp
Incredible fresh fish! Extremely polite and attentive service. Our B&B recommend this place and it was fantastic. Calamari it was fresh and tasty. Monkfish and salmon were really good.

Sandra S.

Yelp
Great food and great service! Loved this restaurant. A must if you are in Dingle! We got this recommendation from our B

Patricia S.

Yelp
Shared the platter for two. It was the best fish very fresh. The breading was not heavy.

Jack S.

Yelp
Delicious food with friendly service. I loved the fish chowder. Parking nearby. Highly recommended!

Janet S.

Yelp
Adorable place. Friendly staff. Lovely food. The fish n chips was amazing. The rose was nice and dry. I'd come back

Yelp
Visited Dingle on a rainy day in August, and while the whole town was a delight, the Fish Box really stood out as a highlight. My American family and I extensively sampled fish n chips offerings throughout the island, and this was by far my favorite. I had the fish tacos, which I highly recommend: the fish is baked but through some sorcery looks, tastes, and feels fried but with a more delicate presentation. The accompaniments were fresh and crisp. We also shared amongst the table and the Fish Box sampler and the seafood chowder were also delicious. Even my somewhat picky tween who struggled away from her American-style comfort foods was pleased with the chicken goujons. The staff were extremely friendly and attentive, and the ambiance made a dreary day feel bright and warm. I'd definitely recommend going as close to their opening time as you can: our party was seated right away but the place was packed shortly thereafter.
google avatar

Jenny G.

Yelp
The best chips we had in Ireland. I had Monkfish Gougons and my friend had the Daily Catch Fish and Chips. Went around 1:30pm and got seated really quickly in an outdoor booth. Very happy with the price and it was exactly what we were looking for. It seemed like a great color scheme and well designed but they put Star Wars prints in the bathroom which I thought was out of place but my friend thought they were awesome haha. They also have a ramp to get into the restaurant if anyone needs that info. Would recommend!
google avatar

Mady D.

Yelp
WOW. This place was really incredible. We have had very average food in Dingle thus far, but this place blew us away. We kept it simple with the fish and chips but it was truly delicious! The staff was lovely and so friendly and the service was fast. Definitely worth the wait - do not skip this spot while visiting Dingle!
google avatar

Jason M.

Yelp
We ate lots of delicious fish during our one-week Ireland trip. However, The Fish Box surpassed any other restaurant, seafood or not. They offer lots of fried options, so our young daughters were more willing to try their fish dishes. Even their critical palettes agreed that their fish dishes were outstanding. Their portions are huge, kids can definitely share even the kids meals. We especially enjoyed the spicy monkfish, the fish tacos and the fish box. My only regret is that we only enjoyed one meal there.
google avatar

Dylan G.

Yelp
YOU MUST ORDER THE CALAMARI - best I've ever had, you will regret not experiencing the most delicious, flavorful, and tender calamari you've ever had. I traveled in from the US, and am a huge fan of fresh seafood. I had to try to Fish Box. The staff were extremely friendly to our group of 4, they even let us walk in with our pints from next door. Everything we ordered was great, you can't go wrong.

Sheila L.

Yelp
Good food, a bit higher end than expected based on guidebook write up. Service was and food was great.

Chad S.

Yelp
The food is excellent. We had the sharing box and it did not disappoint. Great chowder as well!
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
Best take away. Recommended by everyone in the area, tried it and wasn't disappointed. Loved the box. Perfect amount of everything
