16 Best Restaurants in Birmingham, Alabama

"It’s only natural that a city a few hours from the Gulf Coast is obsessed with seafood. The Fish Market’s Southside location opened in 1983, when George Sarris took over his uncle’s fish market and transformed it into a restaurant. The original location remains in the family and unpretentious, offering a wealth of seafood with Greek influence. Guests can order counter service at the market and eat in a slightly more casual area, or wait for a table on the restaurant side. There’s also a selection of Greek imports, both edibles and handicrafts, to peruse. Satellite locations exist on 280 and in Vestavia." - Sarra Sedghi, Denise K. James

For a Friday night, the 30-minute wait was surprisingly short. My sister and I were meeting up with a friend from high school, and it was the perfect spot to catch up. Our server, Tristen, was friendly and attentive throughout the evening. I ordered the Maryland crab cake. While it was nicely presented, I have to admit—being familiar with authentic Maryland crab cakes, this one didn’t quite compare. That said, the atmosphere more than made up for it. The restaurant was warm and inviting, with additional space available for larger parties of 10 to 12 guests, which was great to see. My sister had the Tuscany Salmon, which was flavorful and well-prepared. Our friend went with the Shrimp Alfredo and enjoyed it. The portion sizes were generous across the board. All in all, it was a lovely dining experience. Given the chance, I’d definitely return and try something new on the menu.

Google
The food was great Service was good . I had no complaints..But then I seen a bug which sadly affected the rest of my experience

Google
Great seafood and Greek and Cajun cousine. Nice atmosphere with several items for sale inside, including Greek themed dinnerware and souvenirs. A great selection of wines, and beers too! You can opt for sit down dining and place your order with a server. Or place your order at the counter, and a server will bring your order to your table. Really good food, very limited parking, and a very cramped restaurant overall. But if your ok with that , not a bad dining experience. Moderately priced menu items, quite a bit cheaper to be here at lunch time.

Google
First time in today and tried the cup of claim chowder and the Maryland style crab cakes. It comes with two sides which I got a side salad (counts as 2 sides). The claim chowder was very good, wish I would have gotten a bowl. The crab cakes were very thin and a little to greesy for my liking. I haven't ever had this style of crab cakes so not sure if that them being thin is this type of style. The service was ok. They were not that busy but felt like I seat a little too long before someone came to my table. Like the openness and how big the place felt.

Google
This place is amazing! I haven't gotten anything bad yet. The shrimp and grits are to die for. Last time I got 1/2 lb of crawfish with two sides and oh my goodness! I will always try to go here anytime I'm in Birmingham. I forgot to take any pictures except for the appetizer (crab legs) and yes, they were also delicious.

Luke Smith

Google
Had the grilled Amber Jack sandwich with fries, slaw, and a side of hush puppies. I should’ve stopped and carried some home but it was so good I could not stop eating. I will definitely be back and bring my family and friends.

Google
I went for the lunch special, 11am - 3pm, $14.99. AMAZING portions, hot 🔥 food, GREAT service. One of my FAV spots when I'm in the area. I visit about once a week.

Suki Amante

Google
I can't wait to come back! From out of town, but will be there next month to enjoy those oysters again! Everything was delicious! The pics don't do justice. Everything we had were huge portions! See yall next month!

Yelp
The Fish Market Southside is one of my favorite restaurants. The flagship restaurant located in the Harris Transfer Company's former warehouses, has several seating areas, as well as an oyster bar and outside patio. George Sarris, Greek by heritage, utilizes the suite of warehouses incorporating a fish market and an area merchandising products imported from Greece. This is a great place to share dinner with family and friends, with the wait-staff eager to serve the bounteous variety of dishes on offer. For 6-8, let me suggest the Greek Style appetizer of shrimp, calamari and mussels steamed in white wine, Bam Bam shrimp, and Fried Green tomatoes. If you think the table can handle salads before the entree, they have West Indies, shrimp or crabmeat cocktail, as well as gumbo and New England clam chowder for soup lovers. For my entree, I like Greek style fish (Amberjack, Flounder, Grouper, Snapper) or Soft-shell Crab. These dishes are but a few from a large menu that also showcases Halibut, Tuna, Scallops, Sea Bass, and the Kings of the sea Alaskan Crab Legs and Lobster. This is THE place to get seafood in Birmingham! Enjoy!

Yelp
This was a very busy restaurant on a Wednesday at 1:30! The restaurant is large with lots of seating. The waiter was attentive and well seasoned. The food was amazing. We started with an appetizer of delicious Greek style cooked oysters. Then moved on to fresh fish (whiting and redfish) and sides of Greek potatoes, John's slaw, and fried dill pickles. The grilled redfish was the best!

Yelp
I went to a catered event here today, as the reason that brought me out to Alabama was to participate in the Transplant Games of America (What what!!!). Our lunch was various breads, we get to pick a menu option, and then a plethora of desserts. So, this restaurant is essentially a comb of Greek and southern style food (I think?). I can only give a review based on a set menu, so take this review with a grain of salt, but I will do my best to paint a picture. The greek salad was pretty standard, but the feta tasted not as processed, so a good quality (and with actual taste) feta cheese in a greek salad drastically improves the taste. There was bread with olive oil.....and hush puppies on our bread plate......again, an eclectic mix. I ordered the fried grouper, and while I enjoyed the seasoning on the batter, I wish there was more fish and less batter. My sister's chicken and my mom's pasta were really good (I taste tested), so perhaps I ordered wrong. All of the other diners enjoyed their meal. The staff were friendly and helpful, and made some last minute health accomodations to the meals in a prompt and courteous manner, so, props to them. The ambiance is......fish meets mediterranean meets a disneyland display, as the restaurant was littered with random mediterranean pottery on display and pointed out to the customers. If I lived here, I would definitely return to try their non-catered menu.

Yelp
Out of 6 entrees, all were awful. The only redeeming item was the gumbo. Waiter was nice but service was mediocre, at best.
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
The staff were great and the food came out very timely and in huge portions. The atmosphere is laid back and super casual vibe. I ordered the crab cake and the seafood platter (grilled). It reminded me of diner food. It was okay, but not something I would go back for with so many options in town. I heard their flagship location is really good though.

Yelp
We ordered from GrubHub for some good seafood while visiting Birmingham. We were so hungry we had eaten before I could take more pictures. We got the combo platter and catfish po' boy as well as the Greek salad. It was very good. There was a mistake made on the order, but the manager did a wonderful job of rectifying it. The servings were generous. The staff made me feel great with ordering. We would definitely eat here again

Yelp
Ah the Fish Market. A staple in the middle of the Birmingham with their famous brick face exterior. But to be honest - not our favorite seafood spot and very hit or miss on quality of food. Certain days, the seafood does seem fresh, but on otherwise days it is dubious. Right next to the medical campus and downtown office buildings, this is a popular spot for work lunches and the servers are always friendly and accommodating to large parties. But in terms of seafood - tread lightly.

Yelp
No kidding but it's been an extremely long time since I've come here! I was extremely impressed by all the updates and changes made to the interior. The ambiance felt great! From what I was told , these changes have been in place for quite some time. I told myself I would definitely be back to dine in. This particular visit , I was picking up some fresh seafood. The staff was extremely helpful and most importantly knowledgeable! I was able to quickly pick out my selection although there was lots to pick from. The gentleman even asked to take my purchase out to my car for me. Ha! (I declined). This was funny to me but I understand why. Nevertheless, very thoughtful. I'm so glad I decided to come here and I look forward to returning real soon!

Yelp
A hidden gem! This spacious restaurant has a variety of fresh seafood in generous portion sizes. I ordered one of their special, the lobster pasta, which was one of my favorite meals in Alabama. I had enough leftovers for a full lunch the next day! I tried their chargrilled oysters, which were large and flavorful. I would definitely love to try their raw oysters next time! We also ordered the calamari appetizer, which was enough to share between 3 - 4 people. I would definitely love to try their raw oysters next! The host/waiter let us know that they were short staffed, so our longer wait times were understandable. We ordered some drinks and chit chatted throughout the meal, so the wait was not an issue for us.
google avatar

Timorris E.

Yelp
Food was good. I ordered the amberjack grilled PO'boy which was very tasty. My spouse ordered the halibut and pasta.
google avatar

Jasmine T.

Yelp
The fish market is one of my go-to spots when I want a well rounded meal. They have a really big menu and I appreciate the variety and veggie options. The catfish dinner is my fav, it comes with 3-4 well sized filets so I always have leftovers. Their tartar sauce is also really good, I tend to get extra. If you're dining in you'll have plenty of seating options because the place is huge. You can also grab a seat at the bar and get good service there as well.
google avatar

Noanya S.

Yelp
Ambience 1 out of 5 Where we were seated was absolutely filthy and I had to request at minimum for the table to be wiped down Service 2 out of 5 The server definitely didn't seem to enjoy being there but he didn't ignore us so that's a plus Food 2 out of 5 We had the snapper (grilled), catfish ( fried), Greek salad, potatoes, fried pickles and broccoli The sides are premade and we're just awful. Pickles were overcooked and super greasy, broccoli was brown and overcooked, potatoes undercooked, Greek salad was wilted so I sent it back The snapper wasn't bad just slightly overcooked but seasoned well 4 out 5 Fried catfish was the best thing we had and I'd give it a 4 out of 5 I wasn't a fan so personally wouldn't return, there are definitely better restaurants in Birmingham

Yelp
We always sit at the bar and it's always fabulous! Bartenders and oyster shuckers are super nice and right there to take care of you any time you need anything. We had the fried crab claws and a dozen gulf oysters. I absolutely LOVE the way they serve their oysters with HOT horseradish, plenty of lemons, fresh, crispy crackers right in front of you and cocktail sauce right in front of you as well. You have everything you need right there and the oysters are served on a nice bed of ice so they stay super cold. This day the gulf oysters were, with the exception of one that was of normal size, the size of my palm. Huge, cold, perfect! The fried crab claws are my favorite thing on the menu and are served with melted butter, lots of lemons and tartar sauce in front of you if you would like it. You can also get the claws sautéed in garlic butter but we all know that fried is the best! If you like seafood you'll love this place! Heck, if you like FOOD you'll love this place. In the words of Hawkeye Pierce from MASH, "the Greeks invented the edible complex"

Yelp
I can't believe I'm just now leaving a review for one of my favorite restaurants in Birmingham! And I'm not even a big seafood lover! The Fish Market is a perfect combination of what I look for when dining out- ambiance, great food and fair pricing. It's the ideal place to gather for lunch with coworkers, or to celebrate a birthday with family and friends. You can eat solo and have your meal brought to you by the servers, or opt for a quaint date night and let the full service area pamper you and your sweetie for the night. There are plenty of delicious seafood choices, plus a land lovers menu if seafood isn't your thing. They also have fresh seafood that you can pick up and prepare at home. My favorite dish here is the salmon kebabs. One thing to note is that they obviously treat their employees right. I've seen some of the same workers here for years, still providing great customer service (or not so great, depending on which one you get). Overall, this place is a gem here in Birmingham and if you haven't been, you are missing out!
google avatar

Mallory B.

Yelp
How in earth can this dish be $15, even at lunch? This is hands down the best lobster pasta I have eaten in my entire life. Large chunks of Maine lobster with mushrooms in an Alfredo sauce that seemed to have a hint of creole seasoning. Fettuccine boiled to the perfect temp. Topped with parsley. If they have this special on the menu do not skip out on this dish. There are so many lovely dishes at this restaurant I have tried over the years, but this tops them all. Thank you Fish Market!
google avatar

Tiffany J.

Yelp
I visited for the lunch special and it was definitely more food than I expected. The shrimp was fried perfectly. And the Greek potatoes were Amazing!! I wanted more seasoning on my cabbage..that's the only issue I had with food.
google avatar

Latrese C.

Yelp
This is a carry out order review ** To start I used yelp to order which was super easy and even a bit fun. I ordered the seafood gumbo and the creole snapper. I was deeply disappointed in the gumbo. Like how can you have a seafood gumbo without seafood!!? It's madness!! The spice was mild and not much flavor with chicken and okra which I'm not a fan of, but almost bland. So if u like a seafood gumbo without the seafood and flavor this is for you!! Lol what a joke! Again very disappointing... Now moving on to the snapper, I took one bite of my fish and it was completely dry bland with no flavor. I was extremely displeased I've eaten in New Orleans so I know what real creole is and this is the total opposite!!! I spit it out immediately. Will be getting a refund
google avatar

Kristal T.

Yelp
My friend came across this place looking for a great seafood restaurant. We were in town briefly for a concert. And this place did not disappoint excellent customer service. The food was all delicious and drinks were great as well. They do have section where I think they sell fresh seafood as well. If you are ever in Birmingham you should definitely check this spot out!!
google avatar

Yelp
A Birmingham favorite! Stopped by for lunch with a crew from work. The service was great and speedy, the menu is huge, and the food is delicious. I went with the grilled almondine fish and the Greek coleslaw, and it was a huge portion.
google avatar

Jerome W.

Yelp
The food was amazing as usual I had the grilled snapper Greek style and as always it was cooked to perfection. My friend had the fried catfish and she raved about how perfect it was and not over cooked. we opted to seat ourselves and the server Tray was really attentive he refills our beverages without even asking, thanks for that We went to the bar for drinks and the bartender was very knowledgeable about various cocktails loved his energy We later went to order more food for our spouses, and we encountered Stacia who was great she had patience and was attentive to all of our needs. overall experience fantastic

Natilie H.

Yelp
We love the fish market! I have been multiple times over the years and have never had a bad experience. It's a good date night spot or place to come for birthdays or celebrations. They have a large menu with anything and everything on it. We always have wonderful service and I recommend this place to A lot of my patients who are from out of town.
google avatar

Patty P.

Yelp
Good oysters, sea bass was great! Sat at the bar so service was quick. Also ordered the baklava cheesecake. Taste was amazing & presentation was great.
google avatar

Sheryl L.

Yelp
The food is always great. We order from the Hoover location. The staff is friendly. We haven't had the opportunity to sit down and eat there.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
The menu is huge. The service was wonderful. Our group had oysters that were plump and tender. The flounder in crusted blanco was so delicious. Drinks from the bar are really nice. Deserts capped off the night.
google avatar

Shirley C.

Yelp
The seating was awfully slow with a large number of empty tables. The food was delicious and worth the wait. A great time was had and the setting and music were good.
google avatar

Josh S.

Yelp
The best seafood in Birmingham. This is my favorite place, period, to eat. It's downtown Birmingham in an old warehouse. It's a huge restaurant with two types of service. If you are in a hurry, there's a line and area for self seating. Sometimes we have to do this to catch our Broadway show on Saturday nights. If you want service, they offer full service dining and have a nice bar. Their cocktails are amazing. Our go to's are the Long Island and the Top shelf margarita. My recommendations for food... Starters Get the sautéed crab claws or try the French mussels. Amazing quality. Can't forget the fresh oysters. Entrees They have a whole snapper that will melt in your mouth or the salmon cooked medium is perfect. These two fish dishes are consistently perfect. Add on 6 fried shrimp that are flash fried to perfection. Finish with a strawberry cheesecake for the perfect meal.

Anthony W.

Yelp
First, I was given the wrong food ( I ordered snapper throats but was given red snapper fish), secondly I was overcharged and third, I didn't realize my order was wrong until I got back to work. At that point I was too upset to call and complain. I'll chop it up as a loss. It will be a while before I return.
google avatar

Ty G.

Yelp
Nothing but positive things to say about this place! Great food, great service, and great atmosphere. Lunch or dinner, this is the spot for great seafood.
google avatar

Jada C.

Yelp
Absolutely love The Fish Market! But this was my first time sitting in and I was not disappointed. Parking was really easy to find and once we entered we were seated right away at a very spacious table. Our server came to take our drink orders right away and the service overall was friendly and quick! I ordered the whole red snapper (grilled) with a side of cabbage and gumbo (with no rice.) I enjoyed every bite! My fiancé ordered the grilled Salmon with a side of white rice and corn! He finished his entire meal in one sitting which is unheard of! The flavors in their dishes are mouth watering good! And they have all of the fixings lol just about any Cajun side you have a taste for. They even have fried pickles which I cannot wait to taste!
google avatar

Amelia L.

Yelp
How am I just now finding this spot! The Fish Market has reached the top of my list for food in Birmingham. The Dino's (baked oysters) were a 10/10 We also had the clam chowder, fried scallops, and White Wine Mussels. Also snagged a piece of the carrot cake for later. Service was great! The bar manager is wonderful and made our first experience great. Great vibe on a Wednesday!
google avatar

Jean-Marc A.

Yelp
Red snapper was kinda tough and chewy, maybe was overcooked what a shame. Mac and cheese and collard greens were top 5 of all time though
google avatar

Arnold N.

Yelp
Restaurant was great. I haven't visited Birmingham in 10 years and the place was just as good as I remembered.
google avatar

Adam W.

Yelp
Very good place to grab some good. They have an extensive menu and everything I've tried here has been great. Fresh is one word I'd use to describe the food here and when you're talking seafood, it's a very important thing! Give it a try! I bet you'll be glad you did.
google avatar

Maxine G.

Yelp
Grandkids in town for a Downtown experience. McWane Center and The Fish Market. Love the atmosphere. Service is always been great. Thanks Jeffery.
google avatar

AJ S.

Yelp
Food was great, will definitely return. Service was great too, by our server Tristan. Ambiance is that of a semi-casual seafood restaurant. My gf and I came for dinner on a Friday at 7pm and were able to be seated right away as they have a big dining room -grilled octopus was awesome, our fav -we ordered two of "the platter", both grilled -one with tuna and one with red snapper. Snapper definitely better. Tuna was ordered rare, it was good but nothing special, on par for rare tuna -the scallops, shrimp, and oysters that came with them were great, all cooked in this lemon butter -Greek potato side dish was awesome -Mac n cheese was good -Greek salad w/ feta was great -ended with two espresso martinis. They don't make the espresso there but they were still really good Overall would return again
google avatar

Shermika D.

Yelp
The food here is always good. As of late they've been inconsistent but I returned after a year. I ordered the grilled reddish and it was very good. The Greek salad was good like I always remember. The dressing was tangy which is how I like it. I also purchased some olives and they were tasty. They have an assortment of wares from Greece and they are quite beautiful. I enjoyed my experience!
google avatar

Valeen W.

Yelp
The branzino special was IT for me! That gained the extra star from me. The gumbo was tasty but filled with fish bones so be careful! Hubby said the fried snapper was OK a lil bland even though he ordered it Cajun style but he added a bunch of hot sauce to make it edible. The string beans was OK but definitely tasted canned. No reservations here but the place was packed. They definitely need to take the extra special attention to sticky tables and bottled condiments on the table...umm we just got out of a Covid Pandemic BARELY! Lower your expectations and ask about EVERY dish before you order.
google avatar

Kasey S.

Yelp
Delicious as always! Never had a bad meal here! Several great menu items, but the shrimp and grits is one of my favorites.
google avatar

Mischa J.

Yelp
Okay The Fish Market! We have made it back to you again. Tonight is date night, but we got your deliciousness to go. By the way, I LOVES the new packaging. Reusable! As for the food, Bae got fried snapper with fries and collard greens. Somebody forgot his greens and gave him Greek style potatoes. It's good he likes those, so no serious protest. Baby girl got popcorn shrimp with baked beans and greek style potatoes. I got the grilled catfish with Cajun seasoning paired with collard greens and Greek style potatoes. This stuff here good. The fish was really grilled to perfection. But, those greens, delicious home cooking for real. We enjoyed this. So, y'all already know! I'll be back.

Tina N.

Yelp
We stopped in after a two o'clock show at Red Mountain Theater on Saturday. It wasn't even 5:00 and already very busy. Service was good. Food was excellent and plentiful. Enjoyed the shrimp and grits. Hubs had grilled amberjack and both were yummy and reasonably priced.
google avatar

Sharday J.

Yelp
The customer service, unique decor, and warm feeling of this restaurant was great. Unfortunately, the food here fell a bit flat. I got the pan seared soft shell crab. It wasn't seasoned well. My parents loved their food! We truly enjoyed the intimacy of our dining experience. I loved the details in the designing of this restaurant more than anything else.
google avatar

Heather L.

Yelp
We started off with the Baked Oysters Dino and they were DE-lish! Different flavors than most places...garlic, roasted red peppers, fennel and other herbs, and perfectly crunchy panko bread crumbs on top with a drizzle of olive oil. For entrees, we had the Seafood Au Gratin (our favorite of the three), Shrimp and Grits, and Grilled Redfish. Each entree came with two sides so we chose broccoli, green beans, Greek potatoes, mac n cheese, fried pickles, and rice. It was A LOT of food! I did find that most of the sides were lacking in salt, but there was a huge shaker of salt on the table lol so no problem there! As if that weren't enough food, we decided we couldn't leave without trying the fried green tomatoes. Not too much cornmeal breading and cooked just right. Great service from Nate! #HeatherEats

Michelle Mayer M.

Yelp
Always busy but worth the weight and portions. Great place to sit at the bar if you don't want to wait.
google avatar

Benjie K.

Yelp
Maybe it's just me? I very much like everything about this place from the building, menu, service and bar! With an order of a dozen Oysters on the half shell there were more than 12! If I were to suggest anything for improvement it would be to stick a few more bourbons.

Ryan E.

Yelp
The food here is excellent. We had a large group and everyone said it was some of the best seafood they had ever eaten. Definitely will go back!

Bill M.

Yelp
We went for lunch on Wednesday there was plenty of room for seating no line and no waiting, in my book that is a plus. I had the lunch Sophia spanakopita baked oysters they were hot and fresh when they arrived at the table, I ordered a dozen and shared a few with my table. The taste with just a splash of fresh squeezed lemon it was outstanding if you like oysters these are worth having...
google avatar

Jeff J.

Yelp
The food is always amazing and Brandon, at the bar, will make you the best cocktail you've had while remaining attentive to your dining needs. Two thumbs up

John G.

Yelp
The sides items have been bad for the last two times we have eaten their. Collage green taste like frozen turnip green. Black eye peas have no taste.
google avatar

Allie Adams W.

Yelp
This is the second time I have been here wirh my mom. We get the crab claws and snow crab. We sat in Apollo's section both times. He is incredible. This is our favorite place!!
