Where to Eat Along Virginia’s Scenic Skyline Drive | Eater DC

"Just 13 minutes off Skyline Drive in Waynesboro, this easygoing spot turns out rib-stickin’ barbecue and Southern staples like fried green tomatoes, catfish, and mac and cheese; dine in (great for big groups and families) or grab a pint or half-pint of barbecue plus a few sides for the road." - Stephanie Ganz

The food and service was great! Hannah was our waitress, she was friendly, efficient and made great suggestions. Ordered wings, chicken fingers, brisket and BLT. Sides were generous, fried pickles, Mac and cheese, fries and coleslaw. Will definitely come back if passing through the area.

Google
What an incredible experience! The food was absolutely heavenly – every bite was a delight. The brisket was fantastic, perfectly cooked, tender, and full of flavor. Everything was just perfect: from the atmosphere to the service. The staff (Emma) was friendly, attentive, and professional – they took care of everything without us even having to ask. You truly feel welcomed and looked after. Definitely a place I’ll return to, and I highly recommend it!

We walked in about an hour before closing thinking we may be rushed in and out but much to our surprise, we were not. We were greeted and seated promptly, Naima (Hope I spelled that correctly) was our server. She was very attentive and helpful when making choices. We had the stuffed Brisket shells and a brisket platter. The choice of favorites between those 2 would be hands-down, the shells. Both choices were great for sure. As closing time drew close, staff was cleaning up but never came close to our seating area or made us feel like they were trying to rush us. In fact, we were oblivious to that even going on until we were close to leaving. Every staff member we encountered on the way out, acknowledged us in a friendly manner to say good night and thank you for coming. Thats a really nice touch. It goes a long way to thank customers. Anyway I totally recommend this establishment and know we will be back soon.

Went with a friend to hear a band on a Friday night. Atmosphere was perfect as we sat outside. Drink and food were great. I got the mac and cheese skillet with smoked sausage and she got chicken tenders with potato salad. The people we sat with all enjoyed their food as well.

Google
Edit: Ate here again today and tried something new. The Stuffed brisket shells. It is one of the best things I have ever eaten on earth. Little bit of sweet little bit of savory and spice with TONS of perfectly cooked brisket. Also shout out to Matt my server this guy really knows what he is doing he made me feel welcome from the moment I sat down. Matt I’ve never had as good of service as yours! Great job 👏 You can’t go wrong with what you choose here. From there smoked meat plater to a catfish Mac and cheese skillet and some of the best smoked wings I have ever tasted. I’m so glad they decided to open up more stores I’ve been going to fish in pig since there original building. Today I decided to try something new and got the brisket burger and sweet potato fries. The burger was perfectly executed with pink like I requested and packed with flavor. The sweet potato fries were the best I have ever had you can tell they cut them fresh and serve with a side of real cinnamon butter. Hanna my waitress today was very kind and attentive and a pleasure to be around. Thanks for always delivering the best!

Benjamin

Google
Good food, many options and good service! The catfish and pulled pork was a great meal.

Google
Well, I'm a truck driver from western NC.and I have a lot of pulled pork in my day, both good and bad. I've been driving by this place off and on over the last two years on my deliveries, and today, I finally took the initiative to jump off the interstate to get me some stuff to go, baked bean and slaw were not bad, the collar greens were surprisingly good with a nice spicy kick to them and the andouille sausage was equally great, but that pulled pork though had to be some of the driest and toughest I've ever had, I was almost like it had been sitting under a heat lamp all day and you can even see how dry it is in the picture I've added. I might stop in again, but I'm sure not getting the pulled pork.

Macki D.

Google
This was quite possibly the best service (Jamie was AWESOME), best atmosphere, and best BBQ I’ve had in my entire life. Not being dramatic. Got the Mac n’ skillet and a brisket / pulled pork platters. Trust me, you won’t leave hungry. (Also, got our food in like maybe 10-15 minutes?! We were actually surprised that it came this fast! Plus it’s AFFORDABLE!) COME TO FISHIN’ PIG!!!

Yelp
What can I say about this place? If you like BBQ and Fried fish this is the place for you. The food is cheap and pretty good. Not my favorite BBQ in the world and definitely not as good as the first time I went. But shockingly the fried fish was quite tasty. Oddly enough I may even have to recommend that. The ambiance of this place is like a good ole redneck sports bar. Service is above average if not excellent. Waiter was quite friendly yet unspectacular. If I were in Waynesboro I'd consider this to be a top 5 ish spot on the area. Would recommend.

Yelp
Second time here and had the BBQ brisket sandwich, it was so tender and good! The bang bang shrimp was equally delicious. This place is really busy at nights and has a large outdoor area attached with plenty of seating inside and out. You can tell the locals love this place and it can get pretty loud even during lunch around the large bar area right in the middle of the main room. Always have had a good meal here, and wanted to stop by again since the server was so pleasant the last time. She made us feel at home with her personality, service is such an important asset that one will remember, it brought us back from afar. Employees are the face of the restaurant and I believe it is imperative to have the best well trained crew to represent a great experience! Overall, The Fishin Pig is definitely going to be a top choice, If I am ever in that area again.

Yelp
Was disappointed in this place. My companions both got pulled pork and Mac and cheese. Both meals were over cooked and dry. I got fish tacos, Jalapeno cornbread, and coleslaw. The cornbread was great. The tacos and slaw were under seasoned. My beer was delicious-Devils Backbone knows what they are doing in their brewery. Our server was supremely awesome. He made the visit worthwhile. Was way too loud inside and you could not hear the person next to you.

Maysa F.

Yelp
Absolutely everything about this place was awesome. Matt was our server and was absolutely awesome, friendly, considerate and great conversation. The food itself was amazing, ordered wings that couldn't have been better and a bbq sandwich that was amazing. The food came out in 6 minutes (record timing) and was clearly fresh. I got fries as my side and they were seasoned perfectly. The ambience is a 2/5 fancy, very relaxed with a bar and a great view of the mountains outside.

Yelp
I was excited to try this place for the catfish after getting a recommendation from a friend but I was a little disappointed with the catfish itself. The bang bang shrimp was absolutely delicious and the rest of the food was decent. It was extremely busy, which was a good sign but there was only one waitress there to serve everyone since apparently some folks had called out. Surprisingly, the waitress did well handling the large amount of customers as we didn't have to wait too long for our food. I'd like to go back and give the catfish another try. Next time perhaps.
google avatar

Brandy S.

Yelp
Great service and food. Total package try there honey butter mix it is delicious only downside is wait time very busy when I've been had to wait 45 minutes to a hour. Can set outside comfortable and enjoy the fresh air tho.
google avatar

Yelp
The pulled pork nachos are amazing. The waitress we had was very nice. The bathrooms are crazy. Them urinals look weird. Overall, the theme of the restaurant is very cool.
google avatar

Yelp
We had lunch with pulled pork, fries, beans, and Mac & cheese. All were great. Our service with Brittany was delightful. We also liked catching up on some sports since we were just getting off the Appalachian Trail. Great experience. Try these folks out!!!
google avatar

Mike K.

Yelp
This is a great place to dine in Waynesboro.. This is a cool bbq place. The interior has a great theme. The staff was super friendly - Britt is a Rockstar waitress. It was a toss-up between the catfish or brisket... I picked the brisket with beans and Mac and cheese. The brisket was good - the beans were awesome - the mac and cheese was good. The Texas and Carolina sauces were very Virginia versions - which was my only complaint. I really enjoyed this place.
google avatar

Menghai T.

Yelp
I got the pork and catfish platter. It came with Cole slaw, pork, fried fish, and a side of mac n cheese. This was absolutely amazing. Some of the best Mac n cheese I have ever tasted. The fish was fried perfectly and remained flaky. The pork was also really flavorful and was great with the the Carolina vinegar bbq and sweet bbq. Cole slaw was also really good. This meal was about $17. Overall one of the best bbq places I've been to. Definitely check this place out. Food: 9.0 Staff/service: 8 Overall: 8.8/10

Yelp
Everything seemed off to us. First we felt a little forgotten when we first got there. Only got one refill which for me is no bueno. I ordered the half rack of ribs. I'm wondering why people don't season their food in Virginia. The ribs were plain tasting as could be. Not even smoky or charred like good bbq should be. It was trendy but plain which means you have to use the Sauces. The Mac and cheese is supposed to be exceptional that was not the case. The noodles were overcooked and mushy. The flavor was ok but again no seasoning. It was disappointing for the cost.

Yelp
Great find just off the interstate! Quick service and tasty food with plenty of choices from catfish tacos to every kind of bbq meat. My daughter recommends the andouille sausage Mac and cheese skillet and I say go for the broiled catfish tacos. Hush puppy basket was good but small pups. Service was great (Thanks Shannon!). Decent prices for amount of food you get.
google avatar

Beth B.

Yelp
Fun place, great food, excellent service. Pork rinds are a must try. Loved the fried green tomatoes.
google avatar

Pamela T.

Yelp
Service was attentive. Food was good and ample portions were served. Mya was knowledgeable and friendly but didn't hover. Catfish was fresh and well seasoned. Friend had pulled pork and it was also good. Cole slaw was a lil dry. Hush puppies with honey butter was good too. Forgot to take pictures.

Yelp
Catchy name, that reeled me in. Rooting for some grub on a trip, I'm sure I could dig something up here. The barn feel of the dining room was comforting large relevant black and white photos on the walls. Free-roaming between the stalls and table was easy as pie. Jamie conveniently jotted his name on the butcher paper table covering. He knew the lay of the land on the menu and quick keep the ST Half/Half flowing. From bussers, to host team and wait staff, they all had a git'r done urgency to everything, but gave the guests all time they needed to say their say. At first brisket shells sounded interesting, but as an entree today, I wanted more variety this first go'round. So did the Crab Dip special, but I went with the sampler to get the lay of the land. Puppies were light, fully cooked and has a crispy crust! Fried cat fish was thankfully light on coating, but had lots of crunch and tender fish. Use the Carolina cigar based sauce as the malt vinegar stand in. Both shrimps were good. The bang-bang didn't need sauce. And, the 'slaw is great! Never got to the Jack Rabbit Salad never got touched, cuz I ordered with my eyes and ordered what I saw (see-food). Good Eats for the hungry!

Yelp
The Fishin' Pig is a comfortable and fun place to visit, lively with a good menu. I had the broiled pollack. That might seem boring but the fish had a tasty seasoning and I enjoyed every bite. I also got some fresh green beans, properly cooked, and some slaw that was lightly sweetened and with the right and light amount of sauce. I even tried a luscious hush puppy bursting with a savory corn meal flavor. The server was helpful on a busy night.

Sam H.

Yelp
Had lunch here on 8/6/25 which happened to be the business anniversary. Both of us had the brisket sandwich which was quite good. Went back for large take out order on 8/9/25 which included pulled pork, ribs and brisket and several sides. All food was excellent but price of brisket was shocking to say the list. Cost of 1 1/2 pint was $63.00. Would go back but never order bulk brisket again.
google avatar

Chris E.

Yelp
The food was EXCELLENT! I don't take BBQ lightly and this was absolutely delicious. All of the sauces we tried were delicious, but the vinegar and the Smokey/sweet sauce combined? Game changer. It took a minute for a server to ever come by, but once she did, she took great care of us. I don't think the hostesses told her she had a table. Ambiance is great and there is an ample amount of room between tables. You're not sitting right on top of someone else.
google avatar

Marianne R.

Yelp
Large portions on the fish and chips. Tasty. Pub style atmosphere. Inside and outside eating area.

Julie H.

Yelp
I've been going to the "Fish n Pig" in Waynesboro since 2017. Absolutely LOVE this restaurant! Everything we've ever ordered was phenomenal ! Cat fish Bites Shrimp Taco better than Bang bang Shrimp Chicken tacos Cat Fish Tacos Their BBQ is beyond exceptional! The staff and Bartenders are great!
google avatar

Bruno M.

Yelp
Blah pre-smoked and pre-cooked meats, microwaved warm-overs, fried in old oil appetizers. You know exactly what's in store for you walking in from the parking lot, the smell of meat??? Nope. Grease.
google avatar

Benjamin E.

Yelp
Brisket cut thinner than the pickles, didn't know what half and half tea was. Cornbread was awful. Will not be back. I expected better results, Virginia is not a beef brisket bar b Q state. Main course was cold, sauses were full of vinegar and pure s**t

Lenora K.

Yelp
Just had lunch here, staff friendly. Unfortunately our food was delivered by a staff member with a long white beard. The food on the delivery tray was grazed by his long beard several times as he brought the food to the table. I chose not to eat my lunch.
google avatar

Terry B.

Yelp
Last time I ordered Catfish and portion was much bigger. Hush puppies were not hot and hard, had to order different side. Panels on wall right next to tables covered with with cobwebs...so gross
google avatar

Nicole R.

Yelp
The brisket and catfish are great, and 90% of the time the collards are great, too. This is not some fancy sit-down place. It is a BBQ bar joint with pretty good food, friendly service, and a great atmosphere. Overall when we're in the mood for BBQ we'll come here because it is consistently good and we're full and happy when we leave.
google avatar

Jen S.

Yelp
We came with four little girls who were hungry and Fishin Pig did not disappoint! We were seated inside at first but I asked the bartender who was walking around whether we could sit in the outside picnic tables to let the girls run around and she was so sweet and agreed to serve us outside even though they didn't have servers out in that section on weekdays. She brought us our meals very quickly and the food was so good. Mac and cheese was my favorite with a really creamy cheese sauce. The cornbread was a jalapeño cornbread that day. We'll be back for sure!
google avatar

Karen G.

Yelp
I'll start by saying I was so excited to see this restaurant on yelp and how close it was to our hotel and it was a plus that all 3 grandkids agreed it would be a great place to eat. The customer service on the phone was amazing and you could tell the girl enjoyed her job or at-least liked it. ( I heard the smile on her face over the phone) . Food was ready fast and looked amazing BUT it was awful tasting. We had two different Mac and cheese skillets both had an awful , weird taste , we ordered chicken wings and the sauce was like straight grease and very bitter, The collard greens were swimming in what appeared to be straight vinegar. The only thing that was edible was the pork rinds. it was very disappointing after a long drive to spend $70.00 and not be able to eat anything other than pork rinds. Sad thing is BBQ is my family's favorite food and we always love to try new restaurants while on vacation with the grandkids, sadly we won't be back the entire 10 days we are here and I had plans to eat there more than once. I wish the taste of the food matched the customer service .

Gale L.

Yelp
Food is okay. Catfish and chicken toes very good. Jalapeno cornbread dry. Hush puppies super dense. Service is good

Taylor M.

Yelp
Delicious food and top notch service. Our server, Matt, effortlessly juggled multiple tables, checking in to make sure the food was good and the drinks stayed full. He was very charismatic, and knowledgeable of the specials and off menu items. We ordered the fresh pork rinds and smoked wings. They both hit the spot in all the ways they needed to. The pork rinds were still crackling from the deep fryer, and full of flavor. And those were some of the best smoked wings I've ever had. The meat was juicy and tender, and the smoky flavor was perfectly balanced with the tangy bbq.
google avatar

Peggy W.

Yelp
We were traveling and saw this by our hotel and decided to try a local restaurant. We went in and only waited about 5-10 minutes for a table. It's casual and our server was super nice and informative. The pork skins were so good! Hot and still popping when we were crunching on them! Food was large portions! So you better be hungry! The pork was tasty, moist and smoked really well and sauces on the table to choose from. My catfish and hubs was really good and we liked the batter they use. My macaroni and cheese was one of the best I've ever eaten, next to my own! But def give this place a try and some love! If we are ever back up that way we def will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
All kinds of amazing food available- wonderful waitress recommended the Shrimp Taco to me- & there were several shrimp, which I chose to be tastily blackened, as friendly waitress suggested . Husband loved his "Two Fister with brisket" , delicious pulled pork & beef brisket & some great local beer! TOTALLY recommend your also enjoying a fine meal here!
google avatar

Lauren H.

Yelp
I tried to keep putting off going here, despite passing by it every single day -- not into seafood and don't eat much pork. Finally found myself waiting for a table here and looking through the chicken selections. There wasn't much to choose from as far as just chicken but apparently, it was enough! I demolished my Super Fly sandwich (fried chicken, Thai chili sauce, coleslaw, red onion) alongside some amazing hush puppies and what tasted almost like cinnamon(?) butter. Southern comfort food in all its shapes, sizes, and colors can be found here! And I think it says something if even your less popular menu items are done right. Bonus points for the quick service. Little bit of a wait (expected for a Friday night) but once seated, they took care of us and had plates in front of us before we knew it.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
My husband, dad, and I were passing through with my dog. I called ahead to confirm they were dog friendly, and the person on the other side of the phone was so kind and quick to answer all my questions. I already knew before we arrived it would be a good experience. We sat outside on the patio area in the most sunny spot. High-top chairs were not bad, I was worried about my dad sitting up on them, but no worries. The price you pay when you bring your dog everywhere, haha The server was phenomenal. So friendly and attentive. She did not hover over us but was on top of things. We were the only table outside, so I appreciate her running out to us in the colder weather. She quickly offered my dog a bucket of water, which I really liked! Food was great! I liked everything I had. My husband and dad were presently surprised by their food. It tasted good, generous portion sizes and very fairly priced. Can't beat that. We would be happy to stop here again if we pass through.

Melissa J.

Yelp
Only gave 1 star cause couldn't give anything less. Visiting area, was looking for some place good to eat. Husband looked up place while waiting for me to come out of walmart getting things we needed. As we drove up seen a lot of cars thought this was a good sign. We ordered appetizers with our drinks. I was excited to see fried green tomatoes so i ordered some, also got basket puppies, chicken wings. As a southerner very disappointed in fried green tomatoes as it was an unknown crust like a panko... (no true southerner does this way) and no flavor. For our lunch we ordered Grady's smoke shack sampler & sam's seafood plater. With us getting 2 platters offered to change out coleslaw/hush puppies on one so wouldn't have so much. Meat was smoked but theres no flavor or taste to it seasoning nothing! Pork was dry, ribs not great nor was brisket. Only thing half good was sausage. Seafood platter.. not fan having so much fried wished gave more grilled option. Sides got potato salad and collard greens. Can get better premade potato salad from walmart. Collard greens would've made any southerner mom/ grandma turn in their grave. Absolutely no flavor plain straight out can taste. Real greens are cooked with ham hock, some bacon, onion etc seasoning something to give that perfect blend of heat, sweet & spices. I mean its a cute looking place but not a true staple of how southern cooking should be. Sorry to say but for the price we paid of 2 people for over $160 we WON'T be back. Waitress at bar was only plus side from here she seen how unhappy we was offered to try get us something else but we both said no after trying platters offering what was supposed be their "best" stuff.

Dusty R.

Yelp
Food was AMAZING ... Matt our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and very attentive to our needs...Drinks where top notice .. Would definitely recommend this place to anybody..

Yelp
Met a bunch of ladies and one gentleman to celebrate a friends birthday. The restaurant seated us as soon as half our group had arrived. Our server Matt was funny and very efficient with getting everyone beverages as they arrived. We had a great time with him and each other. Everyone got bar b Que except me. I got the salad with shrimp. Everyone was very happy with their food. The birthday girl had baked and brought her own chocolate torte. Matt supplied plates, forks etc. The decor is standard for a bar b Que restaurant. I seldom give 5 stars but today they deserved it! Great experience.
google avatar

Sandy C.

Yelp
It's always good, love what I've ate! Crowed at times! I can't say enough good! Try it at least one time!

Alex B.

Yelp
Second time and really well made meals. Nice variety on the menu and the food is very well made and seasoned

Amy K.

Yelp
This was our second time here on our way home from NMB . We ordered pork rinds that were too hard...way too much also. We both ordered the meat platter with a-bit of every meat. Neither of us could finish it. But all the meats were delicious. We would probably share this platter next time and try something else on the menu too. Service was great and the restaurant was packed and a band outside to entertain while we waited to be seated
google avatar

Melanie C.

Yelp
This is one of my MIL favorites spots to eat as they serve gluten free options and as someone with severe celiacs disease she has never had an issue with cross contamination. The staff has always been friendly and accommodating. I usually order the blackened shrimp tacos with a salad. Although their tater tots are a big hit amongst everyone else in our party. They are extremely kid friendly offering a kids coloring contest to all children which my kids adore. They also offer live music which makes them a great all around spot.
google avatar

Gregg B.

Yelp
The catfish was cooked perfectly and served piping hot. The fried green tomatoes were ok. Service was good.

Marc G.

Yelp
We went on a Sunday evening. The place wasn't too busy but it still took 25 mins for us to even get asked what we wanted to drink. The waitress did apologize but other than that, the food was decent. We got the "Gradys Smoke Shack Sampler". The best thing on the sampler imo were the bbq wings, hush puppies and the sausage. The brisket was very tender just not very flavorful. The ribs were ok, but kind of dry. The mac and cheese was bland as well. I think you should definitely give this place a try atleast once but overall a 3 star bbq place.
google avatar

Cindy D.

Yelp
We were with a group that did a hike about 30 minutes south of Waynesboro. The week prior, I researched restaurants and contacted this restaurant to inquire about the ability to accommodate a group of 25-30 people. They were great, setting up the patio area so our group could be in the same location (it was a warm August afternoon). They were in the midst of a shift change when we arrived, so some of the food orders took longer than others. But all of the food was delicious and I would definitely return here again. Conveniently located just off of I-64. Two of our families had dogs with them, and the patio area worked well for them, too. Thank you to the Fishin' Pig crew for their hospitality!
google avatar

Ruth Ann B.

Yelp
Great meal while traveling. Quite the menu and choices! Some of the best brisket ever tasted....super tender and great smoked flavor. My son got the blackened ahi tuna tacos...wow! Wonderfully prepared tuna, excellent accompaniments- loved the crisp vegetables in the taco with the tuna. We ate at the bar and the bar tender Courtney was very helpful in suggesting choices. We choose to eat at the bar upon arrival since 25 minute wait for a table. The place was busy for a Thursday night- good sign. We were able to get served at the bar immediately. This is a casual place, well lit, not too loud. It has outdoor seating as well which would be nice when weather is warm. Would be happy to return here when in the area!

Crystal W.

Yelp
Expected a better outcome. The service was not on point. The food was subpar. The beer however was the only thing it had going for it. Will not go back sadly
google avatar

Adam R.

Yelp
Serving size is great for the price. Good meats and hush puppies! I think this is a great spot if you're in the area. Small towns don't always have good food but this spot is a wonderful space in a little town.
google avatar

Maralyn H.

Yelp
Great service at this popular and authentic BBQ restaurant. Meat and homemade sauces were just what you want at a barbecue. I give it a 4 because it was so crowded that it had a messy appearance and the table top was sticky. Our server was friendly and helpful even though the place was crazy busy. I would come back in a heartbeat.

Cynthia W.

Yelp
Great food and atmosphere. Went there while attending a woodworker symposium they were very accommodating to our group.

Yelp
Wait was expected for a Saturday. Friendly service! Matt was a character! Very good food and large portions. Took some home! Wife had the pulled pork and said it didn't even need sauce because the pork was delicious! I had the fried fish. Very good!
