In Halifax for a conference, and came here after seeing the stellar reviews it has. The interior is classy and we were greeted by very friendly hosts. Our waiter had an attitude, but I have to assume it's because he had a long day (he clearly did not want to be there).
We started with the roasted cauliflower appetizer. It was not good, don't order it. The cauliflower was more boiled than roasted (think boiled cauliflower with charred bits - as if they took cauliflower, boiled it, then dropped it on an open flame for a few seconds). It was mushy and unseasoned. With it came chimichurri, mushrooms, and crispy polenta. The chimichurri was the only thing on the plate that had some flavour. Overall a disappointment.
I ordered the seafood smorgasbord - a spread of salmon, oysters, tuna, shrimp, taro chips, and lobster. While it sounded good on paper, what came out was more than underwhelming. For $45, I got 3 thin slices of salmon sashimi, 4 thin slices of tuna sashimi, 4 boiled shrimps, 3 of the smallest oysters I've ever seen, some taro chips, and something like a quarter of a lobster tail. The platter it came on was huge, but half of it was sauces (soy sauce, wasabi, pickled ginger, hot sauce, vinaigrette, and cocktail sauce). Everything was cold and the shrimp and lobster were extremely rubbery. This dish was a complete joke - go to any respectable sushi shop and you can get all this for under $20, easy.
My vegetarian friend ordered the grilled tofu dish. She described it as boiled spinach with old tofu served in spinach water. I had a taste and she's not wrong - it's as if they chopped up some spinach, boiled it, and put it in a bowl (water and all) then topped it with week old unseasoned tofu. Absolutely inedible, and a disgrace for the $34 price tag.
My other friend had the lobster dinner. It's her first time having lobster so she seemed to have enjoyed it, but as someone who has eaten my share of lobster...what she received was disgusting. The lobster was definitely not 1.5lbs as advertised, and what little meat it offered was extremely rubbery. $49 down the drain.
We were all hungry after the appetizer and entrees, so we ordered dessert. The raspberry white chocolate creme brûlée was pretty flavourless, and my chocolate mousse was on a cookie base that was so hard it couldn't be cut through with a spoon.
I left the restaurant hungry, even after spending $80 on myself. Two stars for the pleasant atmosphere and friendly hosts, but I definitely will not be returning and I'm honestly shocked how this restaurant has such high reviews.
