These MICHELIN Hotels in Asia Exude a Wong Kar-wai Mood

"Nostalgia runs deep at this Hong Kong hotel, which masterfully blends the city’s rich history with modern comfort. Its design pays homage to the iconic Star Ferry and the maritime heritage that has shaped the region, with every detail carefully curated to evoke memories of old Hong Kong. From the retro-chic décor to the subtle yet striking red and neon signage, the aesthetic instantly transports guests to the cinematic world of In the Mood for Love." - Faye Bradley

The Fleming

"How did it strike you on arrival? The impression actually begins outside, with a glimpse of the hotel’s striking retro neon sign. Formerly a staid business hotel, the Fleming is fresh off a dramatic high-design makeover inspired by Hong Kong’s famous Star Ferry. A bright red elevator that feels like the hull of a boat transports guests to a nautical lobby anchored by a wall of vintage Hong Kong mailboxes. Nice. What’s the crowd like? The hotel still pulls a primarily business crowd thanks to its location near the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, but the new design will likely attract high-level professionals from creative industries and stylish leisure travelers who appreciate great design. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.Rooms are divided by four types: Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large. We chose the Medium, which is about 270 square feet. It’s certainly not the biggest room in town but the intelligent layout makes it feel larger than it is. Surveying the compact room, there are interesting details at every glance, from retro brass light fixtures to leather drapes, a blue-and-white striped rug, and contemporary Hong Kong street photography. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?Every room comes with a Queen-size bed and comfy mattress, goose-down duvet, crisp white linens, and fluffy pillows. Our only complaint? That the bed’s not a king. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? It seems like The Fleming has thought of every single detail. There’s a minibar stocked with high-quality local beers and snacks, an Apple TV, and an old-school British umbrella that looks so cool, you’ll probably want to take it home with you. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.Awash in deep green tiles and brass fixtures, the Art Deco-styled bathroom includes a compact rain shower with decent (but not amazing) pressure. The highlights were the customized shower gels and shampoos, which pay tribute to Chinese Traditional Medicine apothecaries. But instead of intensely herbal scents, you can expect warming and invigorating combinations, such as sandalwood, eucalyptus and amber. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word? The Wi-Fi is strong and free—another selling point. Room service: Worth it?The Fleming does not provide room service, but the minibar’s always stocked with healthy snacks and instant noodles. Luckily, you’re on the doorstep of one of Hong Kong’s top food districts. Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why?At Osteria Marzia, the bartender has such high standards that he made us a negroni, wasn’t happy with it, and started again from scratch. Guest relations manager Andre also provided a handful of great local recommendations when we asked about restaurants and bars. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you. You’ll enjoy complimentary breakfast buffet every morning at the ground-floor restaurant Osteria Marzia. It’s not your typical hotel buffet, focusing instead on European-style quiche, avocado, fresh breads, fruits and yogurts. If the high-quality breakfast and excellent coffee is any indication, you’ll likely want to visit the restaurant for dinner one evening. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay? The Star Ferry reimagined as a cutting-edge design hotel Bottom line: worth it, and why?Detail oriented and welcoming" - Kate Springer

The Fleming (Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong) 11 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Some hotels go in for design that’s skin-deep, but character isn’t something you can buy off the rack and apply ready-made. The Fleming, on the other hand, begins with design at its heart. The location, in Wanchai, places it close to the harbour, and the style recalls the Streamline Moderne architecture of the ferries and terminals. In fact, “recalls” might not be a strong enough word — don’t be surprised if you feel the occasional urge to reach out and steady yourself against a phantom wave." - Tablet Hotels

I first saw this hotel on ArchDaily, one of the Architecture review websites. The hotel design was inspired by the Hong Kong Star Ferry, and I have wanted to stay here ever since. A Work of Substance designed the Fleming Hotel in Wan Chai. There is a small entrance from the street level, and you are entering the wonder world of The Fleming. You are welcomed by the classic design check-in desk with room keys in the background. One piece of furniture that caught my eye is the chair with a backrest you can push up like on the Star Ferry; unfortunately, they don't sell it. After checking in, I made my way up the blood-red lift that could easily be in any Wes Anderson movie. I am unsure if "inspired by" appropriately describes the level of detail the designer put into this hotel. This project is a designer's dream, as they have designed almost every element of the hotel, from furniture to lighting. I am staying in the Large Room with a King Bed. The hotel has been open since 2017, and its condition remains very good. I will let the photos show the level of detail in the design; it is tastefully done if you are an architect, designer, or passionate about design. The Fleming should be on your bucket list!

This hotel is truly charming and beautifully designed, in an excellent location. The rooms are gorgeous, well-maintained, pleasantly scented, and feature a very modern architecture. It definitely lives up to all the great reviews here on Google. I’d like to give special thanks to the receptionist Ms. Yoqu for her tremendous help when we got out of a taxi — she was extremely kind and genuinely concerned about our safety. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Hong Kong.

Loved every bit of the hotel- from the interior design, cleanliness and excellent service from the hotel staff. Was informed by counter staff about the upcoming typhoon, and was advised to purchase any food and necessities upon check-in! That information was necessary for our safety and we truly appreciated it. The cleaning lady we encountered was so nice too. A modern, beautiful (lovely green and gold theme with wooden floors!) and clean room that was beyond our expectations. A notch above other hotels.

Nice and very convenient hotel. Easy walk to the Exhibition center as well as to Subway and even Star Ferry Wan Chai Pier. My room had a desk which was helpful. Breakfast is great

Google
The rooms were lovely, very comfortable and quiet. Good air conditioning. The staff were very attentive and helpful. The location has decent public transport access. There is a large road nearby, but we couldn't hear it from the room. The breakfast is decent as well, mostly western food. Would definitely stay here again.

Google
Our first hotel in Hong Kong smelled of terrible mildew, so we moved to The Fleming which was a massive relief. The ship themed rooms are fantastic, everything is clean, and the service was terrific. We didn’t even tell them it was my birthday, but they must have noticed it from my passport when they scanned it and prepared balloons in the room! Easy 5-star experience

Very central in Wan Chai. Great retro feel and decoration of the rooms. They sell some retro products like pens, postcards as well. Our room was very spacious by HK standards. Retro design of bathrooms. Umbrella to rent. Nice feel.

Just a stone’s throw away from many great eateries and 茶餐廳 nearby, The Fleming is located at a strategic corner, with a restaurant just on the main floor adjacent to the main entrance into the hotel. Majestically beautiful interior, from the guest lobby, to the hallways, all the way down to the rooms itself. For Hong Kong, The Fleming actually boasts a great deal for the space and quality you’d be indulging in. I came with my family and they were so kindly nestled in a room just right down the hall from mine. The rooms were spacious, and sufficiently cozy. I had a great night’s sleep, during the duration of my stay. Though my shower pressure was a tad on the chaotic/high end. All in all, a great find. Front of the house staff at the check-in desk were polite, and I looked forward to returning back every evening.

Yelp
This is a beautiful small hotel, in a greatly renovated composite building in the former red district of Wan Chai. It recreates a boat like art deco Hong Kong style. The rooms are really cute and they retain the intensity of the 1930s vibrant island, in a luxurious version. The staff could not be nicer and more effective. The restaurant on the ground floor is nice, but with a limited menu. A bit more of care in the design of its culinary identity would have been important to couple with the rest of the hotel standards.
