The Fleming

"How did it strike you on arrival? The impression actually begins outside, with a glimpse of the hotel’s striking retro neon sign. Formerly a staid business hotel, the Fleming is fresh off a dramatic high-design makeover inspired by Hong Kong’s famous Star Ferry. A bright red elevator that feels like the hull of a boat transports guests to a nautical lobby anchored by a wall of vintage Hong Kong mailboxes. Nice. What’s the crowd like? The hotel still pulls a primarily business crowd thanks to its location near the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, but the new design will likely attract high-level professionals from creative industries and stylish leisure travelers who appreciate great design. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.Rooms are divided by four types: Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large. We chose the Medium, which is about 270 square feet. It’s certainly not the biggest room in town but the intelligent layout makes it feel larger than it is. Surveying the compact room, there are interesting details at every glance, from retro brass light fixtures to leather drapes, a blue-and-white striped rug, and contemporary Hong Kong street photography. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?Every room comes with a Queen-size bed and comfy mattress, goose-down duvet, crisp white linens, and fluffy pillows. Our only complaint? That the bed’s not a king. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? It seems like The Fleming has thought of every single detail. There’s a minibar stocked with high-quality local beers and snacks, an Apple TV, and an old-school British umbrella that looks so cool, you’ll probably want to take it home with you. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.Awash in deep green tiles and brass fixtures, the Art Deco-styled bathroom includes a compact rain shower with decent (but not amazing) pressure. The highlights were the customized shower gels and shampoos, which pay tribute to Chinese Traditional Medicine apothecaries. But instead of intensely herbal scents, you can expect warming and invigorating combinations, such as sandalwood, eucalyptus and amber. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word? The Wi-Fi is strong and free—another selling point. Room service: Worth it?The Fleming does not provide room service, but the minibar’s always stocked with healthy snacks and instant noodles. Luckily, you’re on the doorstep of one of Hong Kong’s top food districts. Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why?At Osteria Marzia, the bartender has such high standards that he made us a negroni, wasn’t happy with it, and started again from scratch. Guest relations manager Andre also provided a handful of great local recommendations when we asked about restaurants and bars. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you. You’ll enjoy complimentary breakfast buffet every morning at the ground-floor restaurant Osteria Marzia. It’s not your typical hotel buffet, focusing instead on European-style quiche, avocado, fresh breads, fruits and yogurts. If the high-quality breakfast and excellent coffee is any indication, you’ll likely want to visit the restaurant for dinner one evening. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay? The Star Ferry reimagined as a cutting-edge design hotel Bottom line: worth it, and why?Detail oriented and welcoming" - Kate Springer

I stayed at The Fleming for one night at the beginning of May during a work trip. I arrived in the afternoon and left the next evening. The entrance is a bit hidden, but it was staffed, and someone guided me to the lobby right away. The staff were very friendly, and the check-in process was smooth and straightforward. What really impressed me was the interior design. The room was beautiful, thoughtfully styled, and surprisingly cozy. Every detail followed the hotel’s design theme, which made the stay feel special. The room size was totally fine, and I felt very comfortable. I didn’t use any of the hotel’s facilities, so I can’t comment on those. But the location is excellent—only a 3–5 minute walk to Wan Chai MTR station, which made transfers to and from the airport very easy. Service overall was very good and friendly. I asked for a late checkout and explained that I was trying to stay in my European sleep rhythm—so a regular 12pm checkout would have felt like 6am to me. I was offered a checkout at 1pm, which still meant 7am in my body clock. Unfortunately, no option to pay for a later checkout was offered, which I would’ve gladly accepted. At a price point of around €220/night, even though it was booked super spontaneous, I expected a bit more flexibility. All in all, The Fleming is a beautiful hotel in a great location with strong service and standout design. The limited late checkout is the only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars—but I would still definitely recommend it.

'A world in itself' Hong Kong and The Fleming. The Fleming is a small and luxurious hotel in the heart of Wan Chai, surrounded by tall apartments, its staff are a great representation of what this hotel is all about. The old world feeling is a charming approach to a small hotel with great ambitions. Included in your costs is a beautifully set out breakfast served between 07:00am and 10:00am. The chefs are working in partnership providing excellent and well presented dishes served to its guests. Osteria Marcia is a great opportunity to explore the Italian cities in Hong Kong. Including the Linguine Alla Vongole, a keen staple in Italian bistros, this can be followed up with a Negroni on the rocks and a freshly made tiramisù. 'A little pick-me-up.’ The ownership of this Osteria comes from Black Sheep Restaurants Group who are known for their perfect hospitality.

I recently stayed at The Fleming Hotel, which has been beautifully renovated from an old building into a space with a very cool retro theme. The decor is both unique and stylish, creating a memorable atmosphere. The staff made my stay exceptionally pleasant; they were incredibly friendly and accommodating. I was able to check in early without any hassle, which was a great start to my visit. After checking out, I realized I had forgotten a few items, but the staff promptly contacted me and arranged for me to retrieve my belongings at the front lobby. Additionally, the cleaning staff was professional and attentive, maintaining the hotel’s standards throughout my stay. I highly recommend The Fleming Hotel for anyone looking for a blend of charm, comfort, and excellent service.

Stylish and charming boutique hotel in Wan Chai. Clean rooms, friendly staff, and comfortable beds. Lots of great food nearby. We got to check in early (12PM) and were upgraded to a medium room on the top floor; very thankful for that! A few things to note: - Wifi wouldn’t connect on my iPhone, but worked on my laptop. - Rooms are on the smaller side by Western standards. The medium room barely fit two large suitcases. - This is close to an MTR station (5 minutes via an elevated walkway), but depending on where you’re planning on going, it might not actually be that convenient. We had to transfer a lot.

Was given an upgrade to Large room due to my own request for toilet configuration, very kind of the manager or reservation dept. The rooms are really unique and I really like the cost toilet, and the great smelling toiletries. This is one hotel with extensive TV Channels especially English Channels, they had almost everything under the sun. Lots of cafes at Jaffe Street plus a laundromat all just 2 mins walk away. Kam Roast, Lung Sum dimsum all nearby.

We did the check-in with a night receptionist with my girlfriend. Right after entering the room, I called from the room for asking whether the weird things I found in the water bottle (pictures attached) was safe and normal. I felt like we were not welcomed and more a problem than something else. Because the receptionist told me they don’t have any complaints about the sound of the car on low level floors, I will make one. Be careful, even with windows closed, the noise is disturbing. Maybe plan earplugs ? Difficult to feel safe and comfortable. The hotel is newly renovated, well located, you can open the windows (I love that) and the room was spacious. But overall one of my worst hospitality experience ever. I will not go back.

A lot of thoughts have been put into the design of the hotel. Coherent design language throughout the entire building. However, I think it’s time for a refurbishment/retrofit since the rooms have gracefully aged.

Yelp
This is a beautiful small hotel, in a greatly renovated composite building in the former red district of Wan Chai. It recreates a boat like art deco Hong Kong style. The rooms are really cute and they retain the intensity of the 1930s vibrant island, in a luxurious version. The staff could not be nicer and more effective. The restaurant on the ground floor is nice, but with a limited menu. A bit more of care in the design of its culinary identity would have been important to couple with the rest of the hotel standards.
