Lyric Opera Chicago debuts Florian, its new restaurant | Eater Chicago

"The previous tenant presented itself as a European-style bistro serving sandwiches, wraps, coq au vin, and ropa vieja (the latter reflecting a Cuban influence). Its catering-driven menu from Jewell Events Catering was described as unfocused, and the operation was constrained by the compact, older building’s limited kitchen space and electric-only ventilation." - Ashok Selvam

Went to see the (7pm) Nutcracker ballet show and made (5:30pm) dinner reservations at Florian. We had drinks, prime rib and chicken cacciatore. We weren’t a fan of the bread rolls. Dinner was delicious. We also pre-ordered drinks and dessert for intermission - walked back into the restaurant without waiting - ready at the same table for us. The dessert was amazing and the drinks were strong. It was a great first time experience and we plan to be back.

Location, location, location. Don't go unless you are worried about missing the show, and if you do go, stick with the cheaper items. Service is good - wish the servers at the airport were so good. Drinks were fine. Food was NOT good, especially for the OUTRAGEOUS prices for entrees. We got Roasted Salmon ($57) - so overcooked and dry and cold it had to be returned, Chicken Cacciatore ($57) which was okay but I have had better from Trader Joes, and barely edible Prime Rib - a replacement for the Salmon, and they still upcharged to $67. That's zero-for-three on the Main Act menu. The salad with capers was a promising starter and the servers did try and steer us to the Brasserie menu, to their credit. The room is nice but dated. I would go back for a pre-show drink and appetizer; otherwise no.

We had a wonderful experience at the Florian. The host at the front desk was accommodating with my Mom's walker. All you need do is ask for accessibility and they are happy to assist and make space for walkers/canes/wheelchairs, etc. The elevators open right next to the entrance of the restaurant for easy access. Collin was a fantastic waiter. Very attentive and kind. The food was absolutely delicious, but if you come here for dinner, come HUNGRY! The food portions are massive, but worth every penny and every bite. I highly recommend the braised lamb and the pistachio gelato. Five stars!

High quality food and attentive service! The Florian is under new management and redesigned. Tonight was their opening night! The prime rib was perfectly done with amazing flavors. We ordered the brussel sprouts with feta and cranberries and the garlic mashed potatoes. They were absolutely delicious. They are located on the third floor of the Lyric opera house. Enter through the box office doors. We had 5pm reservations and had to ask them to let us in because they typically don't open the doors until 5:30. We felt it was worth the cost for the quality, convenience and service.

Pleasantly surprised meal with outstanding service and nicely crafted cocktails. I read some previous reviews and had not expected much. I wanted to eat here before a performance and because of the history. Entrance is near the valet stand go in and you show your ticket for the night and you're escorted to the third floor. A small but nicely updated dinning room awaits. A few things to note. When you make reservations you're asked to choose your main from a Prefix menu. Great choices from fish to pasta to a prime rib. I ordered the prime but when I arrived, the bread and the tomato soup was excellent and filled me a bit so I changed my main (not a problem) to a tortellini. Which turned out to be excellent and hit the spot. My husband had the sea bass and it was flaky, moist and cooked very well. The sides were fingerling potatoes and a nice salad. I heard the menu is seasonal so it changes. That evening we started with a complementry Amuse-bouche of a beet panacotta with some nutty tones. This was for the evenings performance of Frankenstein. ( Frankenstein's monster foraging in the forest) . I am a fan of this dining experience and will make this my choice when I attend future performances at the Opera house. One of the other perks is you get preferred entry to the hall in addition you can preselect cocktails and snacks for the intermission and they await you at your table. Super nice to have cocktails and a place to sit. Big shout out to our server Colin who recommended a lovely white for the fish. Did I mention they have an excellent selection of wine by the glass and bottle.

Everything was wonderful from the minute we got there till the end of the evening. The food & service were excellent. Started with an amuse-bouche then enjoyed tomato soup along with fantastic bread that was served with two kinds of butter, sea salt butter & Parmesan pepper butter, both fantastic. We enjoyed the pancetta with parsnip purée. Wine and cocktails were excellent. Our coffee and olive oil cake we’re waiting for us when we returned during intermission. All excellent. I will definitely do it again!

There’s a specific hostess that for no known reason, behaves very rudely whenever we’re there. It was the same last year - tried to complain but not sure the complaints going thru. The food excellent, the atmosphere and all other staff members, all wonderful - just this one particular hostess has some unknown, unprovoked issues.

Located on the "Dress Circle" Floor, next to "Aisle One". The convenience of pre-ordering food and having it waiting during intermission is a unique and luxurious experience. Had the strawberry tart with gold leaf and prosecco. I was in and out with time to spare. I also had changed my reservation last minute and they were most accommodating. I called and left a message and someone called back within a couple hours.

Yelp
We were attending a concert at the Lyric and made reservations at The Florian. On our last visit we had lunch only. This visit was for dinner and they had a full menu. Reservations are secured on Tock, $25 per person. Food was decent. Make sure to leave at least two hours for dinner. It was a bit leisurely and I got a little anxious through coffee and dessert and we couldn't use the QR code to check out. The server had to manually deduct the Tock deposits. Lovely setting, couldn't be any closer to the Lyric (on the 3rd floor).

Yelp
If you're going to a performance at the Lyric Opera House, I highly recommend making a reservation for dinner beforehand. You get a set menu with options to choose from for each course and during intermission, you can pre-order dessert and a cocktail to have waiting for you during the break. Everyone starts off with a basket of bread and their Cacio e Pepe butter which was fantastic. The tomato soup was amazing! Full of flavor and texture and served steaming hot. I ordered the prime rib but others dining with us got the halibut which I took a bite of and kind of regret getting for myself because it was perfectly cooked and like butter with every bite. For dessert I had the apple cheesecake which was decadent! The service was also wonderful and everyone was very attentive and quick to ensure we were on time for seating at the nutcracker. Looking forward to our next performance and dining here again!

Yelp
The Florian was the best Restaurant thats at Lyric Opera House! I find it great to come matinee hours, that they just do not have evening hours! Their food is great especially their sorbets! i will attend matinee as long as the restaurant have those hours

Yelp
The idea of having dinner before a show at the Lyric is great. The food unfortunately was not. Very expensive and not worth it. My salad had so much dressing on it, it was like cole slaw. Took it back for soup. Soup was fine but not real good. Chicken piccata was only a baked (!) breast with very salty sauce. (Probably used salted capers). Tasteless spaghetti and bread rounded out the meal. $200 for two.. Find a higher quality restaurant for your money.

Yelp
Wasn't my first choice, but I was in a pinch. Having been forced to stay later at the office than I wanted, I only had an hour to grab dinner before a 7:30 show. Figured this was a safe bet. Safe it was. I got my meal with time to spare, delicious it was not. I would describe the food as completely uninspired with the sole purpose of being marginally edible. The chicken Diavolo was not chicken diavolo. It was chicken, I'll give them that, but it was served with creamed potatoes and gravy not spicy tomato diavolo sauce. But that probably wouldn't have mattered anyway as the chicken was pretty dry and over cooked. The rolls were also tasteless and had a powdery coating on the outside. They also tacked on a 21% gratuity for my table of one.

Yelp
Have you ever gone somewhere with a preconceived expectation and then been blown away? That's The Florian! Had the Prime Rib, Garlic Mashed and Brussel Sprouts. All were exceptional. Finished with the apple pie which was also outstanding. I also enjoyed a Vesper which would have made 007 proud If you are going to an event at the Opera house I strongly recommend The Florian.

Yelp
One of the least organized formal dining experiences I've experienced. No signage anywhere throughout the entire Lyric Opera house - nowhere. We must've walked into 6 different entries, told different things by different, not at all helpful people. We finally find it (it's a door that says "employee entrance", by the way), and wait in a 20-minute line for someone to bring us to the elevator. Nobody said what we were supposed to be doing (again, no signage here either, had to ask other patrons). The security guard was loudly yelling into her phone on facetime with someone else who had kids running around yelling. Didn't acknowledge us once. Didn't tell us to have our vaccine cards/IDs out - didn't know we needed that until the people right before us were showing theirs. A man came down and demanded to see our ballet tickets (weird, because the people before us didn't have to show those), then as he got tired of waiting for me to pull them up on the phone told me to show them when I came down after dinner (originally the plan, but ok). He wasn't clear whether I should follow him, so I started to, and he told me to go back. K. The waitress kept forgetting basic things about our order (I asked for coffee 3 times), but otherwise everything was good about the actual food. Good tasting, came out relatively quickly, nice and hot, nothing unexpected, nice big portions. The fish was delicious and cooked perfectly. Prix fixe is a nice easy setup, paying ahead of time was easy as well. The price was reasonable for good food. Women's bathroom is hard to find, and, shocker, another security guard on their phone unwilling to help. As I was in the bathroom, several male workers were coming in and out of the bathroom without announcing themselves etc. - shocked to see there's a STAFF DOOR IN THE BATHROOM!

Yelp
Well organized dessert/cocktail option during intermissions. You can sign up for a table and preorder your dessert so a table is waiting with the dishes ready right at intermission. The desserts are limited - tres leches, apple pie, or red velvet. We tried the last two, very sugary (could have probably halved the sugar to enhance the taste of the actual dessert) and skimpy on the whipped cream. Portions are generous though. The signage out front makes it sound like coffee/tea is included but it's extra. One star for flavor, two stars for price/quality ratio, four for convenience and organization.

Yelp
My friends and I had dinner at this restaurant before the prior to the Fiddler on the Roof performance last night (9-30-22). It was one of the worst dinner experiences we have had. The food was practically inedible. I ordered prime rib, a cut that should be tender. Unbelievably, it was very chewy. The Brussels Sprouts were over cooked and over seasoned. The salad dressing was simply put unpleasant. The dinners were pre-set and pre-ordered with allergies noted. Despite this, the offending ingredient was included in the salad - not once but 3 times after it was brought to the attention of the waiter! I was shocked!

Yelp
Tasteless salad, by far the worst prime rib I've ever had, stale bread, and a dried out cookie for dessert. This place has the ambiance of a cafeteria with tiny tables and no table bussing. With a couple of drinks it came to $270.0 for two people. Never again.

Yelp
We attended the Florian this past weekend and it was outstanding. It did take a quick question to the box office to find how to get there, but once we arrived, we had a fabulous evening. The service was outstanding, making sure we were taken care of and able to get to the pre-concert talk in time. My husband had the prime rib with mashed potatoes and I had the mushroom risotto. The French 75 cocktail was also delicious. This will be our go-to restaurant when we attend the Lyric Opera.

Michael K.

Yelp
Do. Not. Go. Here. They were overwhelmed and got everything wrong. I can't rate the food because we were never served any, but the service and management were horrendous.

Yelp
We dined at The Florian last night prior to seeing Fiddler on the Roof at the Lyric Opera. The food was delicious and the service was very good. However, the venue can be (and should be) significantly improved. The major issue, and the one we were most surprised about, was that the restaurant does not have its own private restrooms. We had always dined at The Pedersen Room, and the best attribute of that restaurant was having private restrooms that could be used after dinner and at intermission without needing to stand in long lines at the crowded regular restrooms. Also, the bar and overall decor at The Pedersen Room were much more appealing and inviting versus The Florian. We were very disappointed in the ambiance and appearance of The Florian, particularly since the Lyric Opera House is so gorgeous, ornate, and rich with history. The Florian seemed very dreary and pedestrian, as if not very much thought and effort had been put into its design.
