"Frequenting the local takeout spot in college is an essential experience, which The Flying Dumpling, a Chinese restaurant on the University of Houston campus, dutifully provides. The Best Places To Eat Around Houston’s Colleges & Universities

"This family-run American-Chinese takeout spot on the edge of campus has a never-ending line of hungry students waiting for massive portions of cheap, filling food. The Flying Dumping is no exception. The portions here bust out of the styrofoam box. The fat egg rolls are stuffed with cabbage and ratchet-strapped together by a crispy golden wonton wrapper. The lo mein noodles are utilitarian and packed with something freshman students might neglect: vegetables. And the giant baos are a meal in themselves. Go here to satiate yourself and a group of friends on the cheap or to stock up for a few days of leftovers during finals week." - gianni greene, chelsea thomas

I loved this food so much!! I came here after my freshman orientation at UH and got the dark mixed fried rice and pan fried chicken dumplings. They were so delicious omg the fried rice was perfectly cooked and the dumplings were so hot and juciy and the sauce that came with it was perfect. I think however I would try the pork dumplings instead since to me the chicken ones were a bit plain for my liking. Overall a great place to eat and I will be coming here more often!!

We had a few reasonable questions about portion sizes, but the lady at the front was rude and dismissive. Instead of giving us any helpful insight, she just re-read the menu to us without showing any interest in assisting. It felt like she didn’t care at all about providing quality customer service. I can’t comment on the food since we ended up leaving, but the poor service alone was enough to turn us off

Not really a place that qualifies for a review of service or atmosphere, as it's completely take-out only. Good food! Pricing is good too :)

Edit: added pork Bao and house special Small place; one person in the front taking orders and the kitchen on the back. Got dark special fried rice. I’d give the portion 4/5 but the flavor 3/5. It’s okay at best. Tried the pork Bao. Texture and flavor 4/5. Only thing I don’t like is that the air pocket in the bao is too much. Dough is springy with good pullback after pressing. Pork has decent flavor. House special fried rice texture is 4/5 and flavor 5/5. Sauce is sweet, tangy, and a hint of umami. Lightly spicy and juicy chicken. Exterior is lightly crispy. Egg rolls are also delicious. My friend had the Hunan Chicken and he said it’s a bit more spicier Overall 4/5. Would I go back with family/friends? Yes if they recommend it. A bit pricey though.

The General Tso chicken and pork egg roll were great. The fried rice and wonton soup were good. I spent about $15 and it was more food than I could eat, so I'm saving half for lunch tomorrow. Great value!! I went for the bao on my lunch break, but the counter person told me it takes 20 minutes for bao and 10 minutes for everything else. So I changed my order. I'm very glad he was clear with me on that so I wouldn't be late getting back to work. My food was ready in about 5 minutes. There's outdoor tables only. There are chairs inside where you can wait for your order. Next time, I'm calling in ahead of time so I can scoop up some bao and head straight back to work.

Came here with my husband to get some dinner before a Rockets game. The food was alright but in my opinion a little overpriced and we waited a long time for our food to come out. There isn't seating in the restaurant so you have to take your food to-go. I got the egg drop and the chicken lo mein. The egg drop soup was pretty good but the lo mein had a lot of oil. My husband got the orange chicken and said it was okay but the sauce was artificial tasting.

Lunar New Year 2024: It's the Year of the Dragon so I decided to get a L5 Lo mein plate for a family member and veggie dumplings for me. It looks like it will be a bountiful year because the Flying Dumpling was very generous with the portions that day 👏. December 2023: Immediately called and headed to the Flying Dumpling once I learned they were opened; ordered the special lo mein and vegetable dumplings. Photo provided and both dishes were delicious. Ordered the special lo mein the NEXT day for a family member and tried the V5 vegetables with Tofu dish w/steamed rice. Photo provided and the dish was pretty good (none left!) with lots of tofu. July 2023: Accompanied person who wanted to go to The Flying Dumpling. Photos show the shrimp fried rice and special lo mein purchased; both were served hot and were freshly prepared. The rice was good and Mom really enjoyed the lo mein. May 2023: Ordered the chicken mixed vegetables and shrimp fried rice. Both orders were prepared well, and the person that ate the shrimp fried rice enjoyed it. The chicken mixed vegetables was in a different to go container; portion not quite as large as the shrimp fried rice but it did taste very good. Steamed pork dumplings were ordered- will comment once I try them (will probably fry them first!). Pictures provide an idea of how fresh the food was, and will hopefully get you to place an order to try the Flying Dumpling. First visit: Bought specialty lo mein for a family member while I selected chicken and mixed vegetables. The food tasted very good and they give you enough meat for two servings! Although I'm nostalgic for the former Chinese restaurant that has closed near UH (Chinese Star), I am glad that this restaurant's namesake has very good dumplings. The sauce I had at home with them was better though 😅. Enjoy the photos and give The Flying Dumpling a chance to earn your patronage.

Google
The food is very good. Definitely a Takeout, fast food joint. Only 6 chairs inside so you can wait for your order. Food is cooked to order so expect up to 20 minute wait. The name suggests dumplings abound but in retrospect, they take up a very small section of the menu. They are delicious though so be sure to try them and the crab rangoons. They do have 1 picnic table outside in the parking lot, but only 6 adults can fit on it. Enjoy the food, call in your order so you have no wait and find a place to relax and enjoy it! Bon Appetit! 😋😋

Yelp
Garlic chicken was very good. Large portions. Great day to eat outside on their picnic tables

Yelp
Lady upfront was super rude every single time i asked her for anything especially some recommendations. She said it with an attitude and in a very monotone way just didn't feel very welcomed in the store. I do not recommend anyone to come here who thinks customer service is important. Lost 3 customers

Yelp
This has been my go-to Chinese spot for whenever I'm in the area. Best Chinese restaurant on campus no doubt, and possibly all of third ward. The food and portion size is great, especially for the affordable price. Front counter guy is super likable. He's always nice & helpful. I remember my first time there I was taking awhile to order because I was overthinking the menu. He asked if I needed any help and patiently went through whatever menu questions I had. Gave his recommendations based off what I like and I've been a returning customer ever since!

Yelp
It is so convenient for a college student since this place is right on campus. The menu has a ton to choose from and so far everything I've tried has been excellent! The same guy at the cashier always delivers quick and effective service. The food also comes out fast and steaming. There are no tables inside, just chairs for you to wait on. I usually get the grab-and-go plates because it has everything I want and it's very filling! I've also tried the baos which are always savory. I will be coming more often throughout my college career.

Ashley G.

Yelp
BEST DUMPLINGS IN HOUSTON! I've tried dumplings from different places but none compare to these. They're always freshly made, really big and a good portion for the price. The place is small but the service is great. It's right by U of H which was really convenient when I was in school. I keep coming back because they're actually amazing! Everyone that I've gone with has loved them as well. If you're thinking about going just do it, you won't regret it :)

Alhasan D.

Yelp
Very disrespectful workers. Treated very wrong me and my group were racially slurred and disrespected for our color. Then were told to leave because we were laughing too loud. Will never come back here, food was bad too ngl.

Yelp
Had to wait forever for my food. They said 20 minutes. It was 40 minutes. Order ahead of time. The Bao was huge but on the dry side.

Yelp
Convenient spot for Chinese food on campus. Nothing spectacular but good, fresh, and consistent. I recommend getting a grab n go plate which is the entree with steamed rice and an egg roll for around $10 with tax.
google avatar

Yelp
Good for a place on campus and not crazy expensive. If you're craving greasy asian food this is the place for you. The worker is very nice and super helpful. The sticky rice shumai has a LOT of rice and can definitely be a meal on its own. Everything comes out hot and fresh.

Yelp
Quick and Fresh when I'm on a time crunch at work. Huge portions! I always get the house chicken. Very good!

Tracy C.

Yelp
Great place to eat at University of Houston. Low key with outdoor picnic tables. Hardworking chef and staff. Hot food with good flavor.

Yelp
A simple to-go Chinese food location that hits the spot. I typically order the Grab and Go dishes which include the main protein, rice, and an egg roll. Costs about 10 dollars and leaves me full! I've tried the House Special chicken, Chicken and Broccoli, and the Orange chicken. All are solid and the amount of meat in the house special and orange chicken are ample. I typically call before picking up and by the time I walk over from the Health building it's pretty much ready. Quick and easy in a pinch!

Yelp
The time I received my order was reasonable and the take and flavor of my was just what I expected so definitely a place to come back to.

Yelp
I got pork bao and pork pan fried dumplings AMAZING I cannot wait to go back. I'm so glad they're right around the corner from my job.

Yelp
I am visiting my friend and took a stroll around the campus and ordered a garlic chicken lunch box. It is a bit salty but tastes good. I don't mind it. It is a takeout place and the food is a bit greasy. The chicken is very tender and well done. It doesn't have tables inside. But there are two benches outside. I would rate it between 4 and 5. An opinion from an Chinese American living in Bay Area in California.

Yelp
Currently working for the University of Houston. I ended up finding this hidden gem when everything else was closed on campus. The food definitely recommend, its a good portion and it's always fresh and hot. When you order they quickly get your food ready and customer service is great.I definitely will be ordering more and trying more items .

Yelp
Hello UH! Long time no see. Boy was it hot outside. After walking around for about 2 hours, we chose to eat here after reading some reviews. It was also the closest place to where we parked. The guy taking our order was nice and it took about 15 minutes for our food. We ordered the pork dumplings both steamed and pan-fried. They were decent but the pan-fried could use a little more time on the pan. The dumpling wrapper was also a little thicker than what I'm used to so it was on the chewier side. The meat was alright, had a good flavor but the texture felt a little off. The baos are a great size for the price, but the pork meatball in the ball was just a larger version of the pork meatball in the dumpling (it feels like). So the taste and texture was the same for us. Orange chicken was okay, sweeter than expected. And the Chicken Lo Mein was not as flavorful as it looks. It's a good option to have as far as campus dining goes.

Pierre I.

Yelp
Great portion of fried rice for $8.99, coming from a UH track athlete. Not too salty and came out really hot! Haven't tried anything else but I definitely recommend any of the fried rice.
google avatar

Monica S.

Yelp
Food is always fresh and delicious. My favorite is the Chicken Hunan style. It's the perfect amount of spice. We love this place.
google avatar

Marisa K.

Yelp
Always worth the 20-minute wait for fresh dumplings! This spot is a hidden gem right off of the University of Houston campus!
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
A tad more expensive than other Chinese places nearby, maybe because they are on UH's property and can monopolize on Chinese food. Not sure. Anyway, that would be fine by me but the food isn't that impressive. I ordered orange chicken and fried rice. The portion size was big but the orange chicken was more like chicken strips with 2-3 tablespoons of bottled orange sauce. Fried rice was okay, nothing too remarkable. Maybe if you are hungry and there's absolutely nothing else, but not a place for decent Chinese.
google avatar

Summer B.

Yelp
Nice portions. Fast service. A little on the pricey side, but it could be because of the location. Very good customer service.
google avatar

Vicki L.

Yelp
Surprisingly authentic Chinese dumplings at UH! I got the 6 piece pan fried pork dumplings and also decided to try one of the sticky rice shumai. The dumplings are ginormous, honestly just the six pieces were enough to fill me up. The flavor of the dumplings was juicy and on point, but a bit hard to eat because they were so large lol. The sticky rice shumai was also ginormous and it was pretty good, the flavor was mild and not too salty or anything so it wasn't too overwhelming. The inside of the restaurant is really small with only 2 tables. Everything is cooked to order so it takes at least 15 minutes; I called and placed my order in advance so I was able to avoid that. Overall, I would come back again to try their vegetable dumplings and bao!
google avatar

Samantha N.

Yelp
My son picked this spot for dinner because he loves dumplings. We ordered the staple of beef lo mein, beef and broccoli, hot and sour soup, fried dumplings, and steamed dumplings. Everything was pretty spot on and reasonably priced. There is no indoor seating but there are picnic tables outside right next to the building.

Juan D.

Yelp
I love it so much Always get dumplings! They're huge! And amazing! Sssssoooooooo amazing!
google avatar

Misty A.

Yelp
First off it is not a restaurant it's more take and go you can eat outside but that's it. Drinks are bottle only. It's called the Flying dumpling but takes 20 mins for dumplings to come out. Very short list of dumplings available. I settled on Garlic chicken. food came out hot and fresh. Egg roll super crispy Prices were good. Still bummed I couldn't get the dumplings but you only have so long for lunch the staff was nice.

Andrea C.

Yelp
I work down the street and all I ever get is the grab and go because I'm always on the go! It's perfect for me. I usually grab the mixed veggies grab n go. It comes with an egg roll and a fortune cookie, soy sauce and duck sauce (which I had no idea was so delicious). I look forward to trying something new on the menu soon. The staff is lovely and very considerate. I love supporting their business! Keep it up friends
google avatar

Susan T.

Yelp
Very well made chewy dumplings and an even more delicious Shu mai Bao filled with rice. dumplings are perfectly pan seared on 1 side. The vegetable or protein filling are so fresh and juicy. Will definitely order here again. Each takeout order takes 15-20 minutes so be prepared to wait outside. There are 2 large white tables outside by the parking lot for groups dining outside.
google avatar

Yelp
We ordered takeout from here today. The place was clean and service was really good! It was like a mom and pop/family vibes. We ordered chicken fried rice, general tao's chicken, pork dumplings, house special chicken wings, and wonton soup. Wow- every dish was delicious and did not disappoint!!! My partner inhaled the chicken wings- he said it was one of the best he's had. It's like eating a meal from when we lived in Chinatown in California! It reminded us of home and it's nice because we didn't have to drive to Bellaire area for it. We now have a new go to spot! 10/10 recommend!
google avatar

Kim D.

Yelp
Pros: It's basically on UH main campus; it's nice to have more food options. Cons: it's okay at best. I don't think I would go back though. My friend bought Szechuan wings, but it didn't taste anything like Szechuan and was not very spicy. I had pan-fried dumplings; they were average. They were a bit bigger than average and broke really easily which was kinda annoying. Additionally, I know it's new and a small location but there's basically no seating inside. I suppose everything is for togo. Overall, I'm giving 3 stars because it's not terrible.

Dave J.

Yelp
I ordered the garlic beef the other day and woke up in the middle of the night with the worst food poisoning.
google avatar

Aline R.

Yelp
So flavorful absolutely recommend! Their buns are steamed so fluffy and have various options to cater to different diets! Highly recommend the buns and dumplings !

Alex C.

Yelp
Food is always great and the portions are perfect. The price is very reasonable too, considering there aren't many fresh food options on campus. Highly recommend trying it out, the guy at the counter is cool too.

Ashley C.

Yelp
Food was not bad like bad but its not good either. Service was a bit on the slower side. Ordered some dumplings and they were big dumplings but just completely bland. soup was eh, nothing special abt it but I've definitely had way better ones. If youre hungry then its worth trying for the portions but you can definitely get wayyy better tasting food from other places for almost the same price.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
DANG! HUGE DUMPLING! I'm not a Bao fan, too bready, but they are a good size. Try their boneless wings with the house sauce, amazingly good! Pricy but good food and convenient if you are on the U of H campus. Their food ships well so ordering through doordash or other services still will get you fresh tasty food.
google avatar

Dev S.

Yelp
It's a nice hole in the wall place right in the heart of UH. Service was fast and on time. I ordered the pork dumplings, bao and chicken fried rice The size and the flavors in the dumplings hits the spot,it's got the juices and texture to it. Chicken fried rice was nothing to write home about, it was plain white rice with eggs n chicken, devoid of flavor and spices. I would positively go back just for the dumplings
google avatar

Amie T.

Yelp
Imagine Panda Express but twice the price. The food wasnt disgusting but it wasn't impressive. You can only order take out. Staff was friendly enough but there is nothing special about this place and it's way overpriced for quality.

Neli C.

Yelp
Food great service great it doesn't matter where you are taking it still hot to serve
google avatar

Yelp
What a great addition to campus! Loved my food! I came here looking for a cheap lunch option. I was tired of the usual chick-fil-a or Taco Bell and saw a flyer for The Flying Dumpling- just in time! After scanning through menu I decided on the pork bao, the vegetable bao, and the sticky rice shumai. I was pleasantly surprised when I got them! FOOD!! My 3 items took a total of 15 minutes to make and were steaming hot when they came to me! I was very pleased with the freshness and the price. It was about $8 for all 3. And let me tell ya the baos were HUGE! They were basically the size of my hand!!!!! It was crazy!! I was full after just eating the pork bao and I was hungry. The warm comfort food goodness was perfect for the chilly winter day Pork bao This was the first I ate and my FAV! It was soooo juicy and the bao was so soft, I was in heaven! It had a nice umami from the pork and beautiful notes of garlic and ginger to give the dumpling some dimension. And the juicy pork left a bit of wonderful meaty soup inside the dumpling!! This was perfect!! Vegetable bao I was pretty full after the pork bao so I only took a few bites so far. Delicious!! It was fresh, steamy, salty, and full of flavor! Fillings were good- salty, green, veggies (not too sure which one). I liked it a lot! But the pork bao has a special place in my heart. Sticky Rice Shumai This was unfortunately my least favorite! I had never had shumai before so I didn't really know what to expect- and maybe I was expecting the wrong thing! I don't know! But first off it was HUGE!! I was definitely not expecting that. Big plus as I can have extra food later! The flavor was not my favorite. The fillings had a bit of a greasier fried flavor which I was not a fan of. The flavor was a bit bland. But I could be expecting the wrong things too, I've never had Shumai! or maybe the dreamy pork bao had raised the bar very high!! Location: It's located next to subway across the street from the rec center! It's tucked into a tiny corner of the strip! The location is small (2 tables and a row of chairs inside) but they do have outdoor seating and tables- I sat inside as I didn't want to freeze outside They dont have a big attractive sign so it's a bit hard to spot! Service: Service was good! The nice man running the register brought my food packaged to-go to my table. Only one person in the front but it wasn't busy so it was fine! The only wait was for those delicious fresh dumplings to cook Overall a great place! Everything I got had a fresh homemade taste and look! If I ever get hungry at school I will make the treacherous walk across campus just for one of those wonderful pork baos. Loved it!

Caresha W.

Yelp
They have the best dumplings that I've ever had! They are a great portion and a great price. Plus, they're chili oil is top notch. Oh, try they're house special chicken too!
google avatar

Victoria N.

Yelp
I mudda love the boneless wings with house sauce! Sweet and spicy and all dat good stuff. Their season fries ain't all that tho. Just some fries with lil bit of salt. Maybe y'all should add some truffle powered or Cajun seasoning to make it worth while All and all great affordable place for a quick bite to eat on campus. Call ahead so ya can get ya grub quicker with no wait.
google avatar

Nhieu N.

Yelp
We had the veggie bao, pork bao, mala fries, house special wings. OMG! It was all so amazing and filing. The wings were extra crispy and very flavorful. It has an Asian flare which isn't very common in wings restaurants. Mala fries are ON POINT! Sweet, salty, a hint of spice. So addicting! The steam dumplings were to die for!!! They have a bit of juices from the meat inside so it tasted like a soup dumpling. Some of the food takes some time to cook but I don't mind since I know it'll be fresh! :)
google avatar

Ling Ling Z.

Yelp
I wasn't a fan of Fat Bao before they were replaced with The Flying Dumpling, so I was hoping something promising was coming. I was not disappointed. The chicken was so good! You definitely want to get the house special sauce for the wings! I had the 6 piece traditional with a seasoned fries basket. Everything was very reasonable in pricing especially for what you get. This place is also close to campus so that is a plus. I want to try the dumplings the next time I come, but you can bet that I will be coming back for sure. I hope they run some specials for college students to get more attention here. Also, the guy taking my order was really nice ;) :) Update: I got to try the dumplings! So good! Very nice taste, but I still prefer the house special sauce for the wings. Make sure you ask for Andy! He is so awesome and helpful. :)
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
Amazing dumplings and Bao. Authentic and great flavor. We got the pork dumplings, pork bao, and veggie bao. The veggie bao was a little anti climactic, but mostly because it was just veggies, didn't know what else I expected. But the pork was incredible. Will be returning!
google avatar

Jameka N.

Yelp
Ehh.. 4/10 good in my opinion. The food was missing any type of seasoning and the chicken wings had way too much batter on them.
google avatar

Damion L.

Yelp
Really like this new place on UH campus. Dumplings and Baos are really fresh every time I go. Really easy to order by phone and good service. Definitely would recommend for somebody looking to get something on campus that's different. Just make sure to call ahead of time because you may wait up to 15mins if you don't.

Yelp
Food was awesome! I am so happy to finally found a great place for take out near my house.
