What a great addition to campus! Loved my food!
I came here looking for a cheap lunch option. I was tired of the usual chick-fil-a or Taco Bell and saw a flyer for The Flying Dumpling- just in time! After scanning through menu I decided on the pork bao, the vegetable bao, and the sticky rice shumai. I was pleasantly surprised when I got them!
FOOD!!
My 3 items took a total of 15 minutes to make and were steaming hot when they came to me! I was very pleased with the freshness and the price. It was about $8 for all 3. And let me tell ya the baos were HUGE! They were basically the size of my hand!!!!! It was crazy!! I was full after just eating the pork bao and I was hungry. The warm comfort food goodness was perfect for the chilly winter day
Pork bao
This was the first I ate and my FAV! It was soooo juicy and the bao was so soft, I was in heaven! It had a nice umami from the pork and beautiful notes of garlic and ginger to give the dumpling some dimension. And the juicy pork left a bit of wonderful meaty soup inside the dumpling!! This was perfect!!
Vegetable bao
I was pretty full after the pork bao so I only took a few bites so far. Delicious!! It was fresh, steamy, salty, and full of flavor! Fillings were good- salty, green, veggies (not too sure which one). I liked it a lot! But the pork bao has a special place in my heart.
Sticky Rice Shumai
This was unfortunately my least favorite! I had never had shumai before so I didn't really know what to expect- and maybe I was expecting the wrong thing! I don't know! But first off it was HUGE!! I was definitely not expecting that. Big plus as I can have extra food later! The flavor was not my favorite. The fillings had a bit of a greasier fried flavor which I was not a fan of. The flavor was a bit bland. But I could be expecting the wrong things too, I've never had Shumai! or maybe the dreamy pork bao had raised the bar very high!!
Location:
It's located next to subway across the street from the rec center! It's tucked into a tiny corner of the strip! The location is small (2 tables and a row of chairs inside) but they do have outdoor seating and tables- I sat inside as I didn't want to freeze outside They dont have a big attractive sign so it's a bit hard to spot!
Service:
Service was good! The nice man running the register brought my food packaged to-go to my table. Only one person in the front but it wasn't busy so it was fine! The only wait was for those delicious fresh dumplings to cook
Overall a great place! Everything I got had a fresh homemade taste and look! If I ever get hungry at school I will make the treacherous walk across campus just for one of those wonderful pork baos. Loved it!
