The Flying Pig Downtown Hostel

I stayed at The Flying Pig Hostel in Amsterdam from 6th to 8th August 2025 with my friend, and overall, it was a pretty good experience. The location is the best part — just a few minutes’ walk from Amsterdam Central Station and right in the middle of a happening market street full of life, cafes, and shops. The hostel allows only guests inside, which adds a good layer of safety and comfort. The lobby area doubles as a bar and restaurant, creating a lively and social atmosphere where travellers can meet and chill. There’s also a separate smoking room for weed, which is a thoughtful touch for those who want to enjoy it responsibly without disturbing others. The rooms were quite decent in size. However, if you’re carrying big luggage, be aware that sometimes the staff may ask you to keep it outside. This happened to us too, even though our room had enough space. But when we discussed it at the reception, they understood and allowed the luggage inside — so communication helps. Each floor has bathrooms and toilets, though some are a bit small, but still clean and manageable. The kitchen area was nice and well-equipped, but it’s not open 24 hours — it operates from 12 PM to 12 midnight, which means you can’t make your own breakfast early in the morning. The reception staff were polite and helpful throughout our stay. Overall, it’s a safe, social, and centrally located hostel — a good option if you’re looking for a fun place to stay in Amsterdam.

29 Oct - 2 Nov Accommodations - Stayed in the 8bed room with a friend, which was clean and well kept, you'd often see the cleaning team putting in their hours throughout the day. PS: love walking stairs so being on the 3rd floor was lovely for me, but If you're not so enthusiastic, you might wanna check-into make sure their elevator is working. Location - Couldn't have asked for any better. Close to laundry, train station, quite a few museum, restaurants, and of course coffee shops. Just remember to bring your comfy shoes. Vibes - Only participated in the pool tournament one of the nights, got humbled pretty fast, but there was a good crowd and participation. As long as you put in a little work, the hostel is set up for you to make friends. Cherry on top - staff - shoutout to Chris and Enzo. You better hope they're working when you visit next, I know I am. Knowledgeable of the area and great guys for a social night. In general, the staff at the front desk are very polite and patient. Extra - Good sized kitchen and eating space in the basement. Cooked a few meals and took advantage of the hostel Netflix account setup on the tv. Complaints - None. Nil. Non-existent. Just wish I had booked to stay here longer.

I would recommend to anyone as a solo traveler to visit this place!. I unexpectedly met some great and interesting like minded people it was perfect like that. I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and later on the more party atmosphere too. The smoking room was relaxing the bar area was cozy. Toilets, showers, bedding etc was all clean. It was really amazing to see hardworking staff dedicated to keeping this hostel clean and bringing people together and getting involved with the games with smiles (I was inspired). My downfalls was the locker was a little loud to be in dorm it just wakes people up or annoys them. Bunks need upgrading because I had top bunk bed I found it so hard to get down especially at night without waking others or falling off the steps they where so thin, kiddies steps. My biggest let down was the man I think with a few pearcings in face that was serving at the bar I don't know what his problem was. Nasty peace of work he would see me standing there at the bar alone and purposely ignore them when he did serve me he would rip money out my hand like 100mph and every time I went to bar I would say 'HI' but nothing no smile just a pissed off face that said 'i don't like you'. so yeah I clearly wasn't liked but point is i don't need that sort of service if I'm going to spend lots at the bar I've never had rude service like this in my life. I wanted to give this place 5 star but I found from my experience it takes one bad staff member like him to let a great place like this down. Praise to all other staff members they where truly amazing including cool guy with locks he was very helpful and woman staff where all lovely. So Thank You keep up the great work 😊.

I visited Amsterdam in 2016, a city full of energy, beauty, and unique character. The first thing that catches your attention is the endless canals lined with bicycles and classic European buildings—creating a picture-perfect view everywhere you go. My 3rd time staying at this place. Couldn’t stay anywhere else here! Great vibes and a very chill atmosphere (especially the smoke-room). Staff are all so genuine and kind. Would HIGHLY recommend this place to stay at. Especially for first time travelers. The location is very central right near the station so transport and accessibility are not an issue. The rooms are a very good place to settle down after a long day (or night).

I would say for solo traveler/backpacking travel, it’s a decent choice. Great atmosphere. Room and bed are clean. No weirdos so far. Staff are amazing and super friendly. One thing you should be aware of, they literally charge separately for all accommodations such as towel, lockers, etc. One big plus is a great location.

I stayed at the Hostel around New Years everyone that works there is super helpful and friendly but the layout is lame not a good place to meet travelers. Also every morning at 10am there is a cleaning crew that comes into your room and starts cleaning wether your awake or not.

The excellent thing about this hostel is the location, amazing! You can walk to anything and everything. Prices are average during the week and almost doubled on weekends! (Take note of this). The front desk service staff were a bit abrupt and off, not very welcoming, but maybe guy had a long day I don’t know. Lots of extra things you pay for: renting a towel, a padlock, a hairdryer. Cleaning is really average, there’s no washing or scrubbing down of the place, they wipe over things. There’s a smell throughout the hostel, may be due to the carpets, you ignore after a few hours. I much much preferred the female dorms to the mixed ones. En-suite shower and toilet, and better cleanliness

Totally a scam!! Avoid at all cost. They want you to book through their site and not use other apps so they offer 20%. When the offer on Hostelworld said if you wanted a room alone you had to book all 4 beds. They waited until we got there 2 days later to tell us we would all be split up in several rooms. Refused to refund. A terrible experience and they thrive on ripping off travelers. It was almost like they took pride in it.

If you are debating on where to stay in Amsterdam during your stay, you need to end that debate right now. This location is right in the heart of all the action, and every major spot to hit within the city is within walking distance or a quick tram ride away. I had never stayed in a hostel before, so I was a bit nervous based on stories from friends in other crowded cities. The check-in process was very easy. I booked through hostelworld and they just needed a passport to verify, then gave me the entrance key, house rules, and directions to my room. I stayed in a co-ed room with about 20 other people. Each bed was in bunk form with clean sheets and pillows with plenty of secure space to keep luggage underneath and an outlet to charge devices on the wall. The showers were clean and I felt like I had privacy while changing as well. The atmosphere at night was awesome. During my first night, I met four people each from a different area of the United States/England and we ended up bar hopping together. What an experience that was! The nightly rates are only a few more bucks than other similar ones, but I can assure you that they do not have the energy like the downtown Flying Pig does!

One of the best hostels I ever stayed in . Upon arriving , the staff is very friendly , and the draft beer special is worth every Euro !! Dorm rooms are clean enough , lol But you might hear people having sex , but so what , it's a hostel. Every night people gather and chill together, it's just a wonderful place to meet people .

Very clean given how busy the hostel is. The staff is amazing, the other guests are always pleasant, I could not recommend enough as a solo traveler. Don't be scared of staying in the big rooms, people were always respectful!

The best hostel I've been to yet! Would absolutely stay here again. We had a private room for the 4 of us traveling together with our own bathroom. They offer free breakfast, as well as a big kitchen to use, which we did. This place was really clean! There was a big stain one night on a pool table from someone and the next morning they had a new lining in the pool table! Very on top of things. They also offer free walking tours and coupons for other attractions.

Overall, I had a pleasant stay at this hostel. Known for its convenient location, fun atmosphere, and etc, I would definitely stay here once more if I'm in Amsterdam again. With clear and basic directions given on the hostel's website, Flying Pig is pretty easy to find. With its location, all the major touristy attractions is less than a 10min walk (Dam Square, Red Light, night club scenes, etc etc). I stayed in a 6 person dorm style room and it was pretty ok. The bunk beds were clean and the mattress itself wasn't too bad. I will say.....I definitely didn't experience too much craziness given how the hostel prides itself on for the "party vibe." In addition, staff was a hit or miss with some being friendlier/helpful than others. As for the amenities offered, unless you pay, you don't get very much. Free wifi (which was spotty) + free breakfast was a nice perk. Breakfast is super basic with toast/fruit/milk/cereal...etc. There's also a nice little bar that offers cheaper drinks in comparison to nearby places and a smoke room if you want to hang with others over a haze of lovely weed. If you need a towel or a lock to use for the storage locker under the bunk beds, you can rent/buy at the front desk. Just a forewarning - the room locker = difficult to use with a regular lock. Unless your lock is biiiiig and such, regular locks won't cut it. Security of the place is pretty secure, so make sure not to lose your Piggie card since that's how you would get into the building and into your room. Personally, I came here during the week days.....which could have factor in the lack of "party vibe." So if you're here to meet, mingle, and party with other people, the weekends probably be a better option. Otherwise, this is a pretty laid back place to stay.

This place really couldn't be better. The location is fantastic, 2 minutes away from the train station and right by many of the city's main sights. Red Light District is also a short walk away. The staff are great and the bar is an awesome place to hang out, especially as a solo traveller. Rooms are really clean - I stayed in a 32-person dorm and was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was. Free breakfast is included and they even offer a free walking tour for guests. This is always the first place I recommend to friends visiting Amsterdam and I'll happily stay here again next time I visit.

this is the WORST hostel i have ever been to. it is sad there are not better options. They close the kitchen every day until 1pm. yes 1pm ...so they can sell you the breakfast. they do not allow you access to your food in fridge til 1pm. it is a very stupid policy. The hostel was very expensive and the shower was cold in my room. The staff is not very pleasant either. very disappointing

Great location, I easily stumbled upon it immediately after hopping off the train. I arrived prior to check in- the gal at the desk was super helpful and told me where I could store my belongings until my room was ready- which I later got an early check-in for. They have events each night like flip cup or beer pong, and the music is on point at all hours. There's a smoking area and a bar which are both really great places to meet other travelers! Showers were clean, and the storage box in your dorm is nice and spacious! Totes recommend this place to solo travelers!

Probably the best hostel in Amsterdam. 1) The rooms are clean and the beds are very comfortable. 2) They have an excellent lounge area. 3) The location is unbeatable. Best part. 4) Very social hostel.

If I could rate this place with 0 stars, I would. We had a HORRIBLE experience staying at this hostel. We stayed for 2 nights and it started with my backpack being bit by a mouse. At first, I thought my backpack got stuck by a hook and got a hole, or somenthing... but after I opened and looked inside, I realized my backpack had MICE SCRATCHES ALL OVER and a piece of tissue was bitten. I went to reception, explained... and the ladie ADMITED they have mice in their building because "there is a construction next to them". She aplogized, explained they can't return "all of my money" but she could cancel the second night we were staying so I can have half of refund. I searched for different hostels, and everything was out of our budget. We decided to give another chance believing they could take care of it right away.. but everything got worse. At night.. we found 2 mice in our room.. we immediately went to reception and this guy REFUSED TO GIVE US OUR REFUND DESPITE WE SHOWED PICTURES AND THE CLEANING PERSON SAW RATS IN OUR ROOM. We had to cover the holes where the rats where hiding in our room, and obviously had no sleep that night. The morning after, we found mice poop ALL OVER OUR BEDS AND LUGGAGE. Please DO NOT put yourself on risk coming to this shitty place where they don't take hygiene seriously. Do not waste your time and money.

I seriously could not say enough good things about this hostel. If you're a young and open-minded traveler on a budget, you'll fit right in. Because I arrived in Amsterdam a day earlier than expected, I was desperate for a place to sleep. I called to make a last-minute reservation and they had space in a 4-person room, despite the fact that it was the first night of SAIL Amsterdam, a famous festival that takes place only once every five years. The employees here are all super warm and welcoming people. They are happy to explain how everything works, how to get around the city, and even to offer some cool sightseeing options. My anxiety about my safety melted away as soon as I stepped in the door. My room was nothing special, as expected, but it was clean, fully functional, and secure. I became friends with my roommate right away and we went to check out the smoke and drink bar, located right inside the hostel. This room is exactly what you would expect inside a hostel in Amsterdam. There are young travelers here from all over the world, mostly seeking to either find or lose themselves one way or another. Overall message: Do not stay here if you're looking for a calm and quiet place to relax or you will be miserable. Also, this hostel is safe, but only to the extent of your own personal precautions and travel savvy. Have fun, and be wise!

The Flying Pig is very cute, lots of character and quite active. It was one of the cleanest hostels I have ever stayed in, and had very friendly staff. However, if you're over 30 years old and you're priority is not to get wasted or stoned while in Amsterdam, head to another hostel. All of the "kids" who were in my room (I was traveling alone) were there for the big reasons as noted above, and when they'd come home at night they'd keep me up all night as they puked and hacked. I had my big nights out, and it was pretty bad that myself, a a 30+ year old woman, could handle the debauchery of Amsterdam better than they could. Downstairs they have a smoking room, which makes the entire hostel smell like pot. Not the best thing when you have a business meeting or a conference to attend. They do have a bar, which has good drink prices and they had a DJ one night, which was sort of fun (until I could hear the bass all the way up into my second floor room). If you stay here, stay with someone, and stay in a private room.

Best hostel I've stayed at in A-Dam. LOCATION-LOCATION-LOCATION! You can walk after the train drops you at the city center after a flight in from Schiphol Airport. Prices are decent and if you have a small (3-5 person group) you can get your own room for slightly more. Singles are kind of expensive though. Cool bar downstairs. Lots of travelers, but NOT JUST AMERICANS. Cool peeps, good vibes, internet access (although it does get busy). Cool opium den type lounge with pillows and stuff. Other location further away was also good but not as centrally located.

This was a good choice for hostels in Amsterdam. It was centrally located to food, bars, and everything within Amsterdam. I walked 10 minutes and was able to rent bikes and bike around Amsterdam all day. The best part of this hostel were the common areas. When you walk in, there is a pool table, smoke room, and bar. I also enjoyed the TV room where you can rent a movie and watch it with friends. They provided free breakfast every day, lockers in the rooms and showers. The bedding was clean (no bed bugs!) with nice bedding (duvets). The front desk staff was super approachable and helpful. They were able to answer any questions. Only cons - not a social enough hostel to make fast friends and the showers only stayed on for 30 seconds before you had to push the button for it to turn on again. I would highly recommend this hostel for 20 somethings to mid 30s!

Going out of my way too post this review. I've stayed here on two different occasions once in a mixed dorm and another in private room with girlfriend. This place is awesome affordable bar drinks and good people hanging out. Staff are friendly and the free breakfast is cool too. Pretty much centrally located in the heart of Amsterdam 20 min walk or leas from everything (red light district, Heineken, Anne frank house, Van Gogh, ice bar, etc.) just booked another stay. Pretty stoked about it!

All I can say is, prime location and chill place to stay. The best thing is that if you let yourself be apart of the experience here you'll git right in and feel right at home. The flip side is that the social side will continue into the early mornings, which I did not mind. Great location from the station, shops and the attractions in the center. If you want to be more in towards the museums the uptown hostel is for you. The staff are friendly and very informative.

The worst place to stay in Amsterdam. Since the minute I got there I knew I had made a wrong decision. First the room would always smell like smoke 24/7, the beds were very uncomfortable. I decided to think positive and enjoy my stay either way it is a hostel right? (Not cheap at all) Then the worst happened, all my money was stolen from my wallet. There is lots of cameras inside the flying pig hostel.. cameras everywhere!! And nobody could even say who where or how my wallet was found or turned in.. very dishonest people.

My friend and I stayed here for three nights during our stay in Amsterdam. The downstairs has an awesome bar and smoking area where people hang around all day. There are some good drink specials like 2 for one mixed drinks etc. We stayed in a 16 bed dorm, so it was hard to feel much privacy, but that is to be expected. Each morning there is a breakfast downstairs and we found it pretty easy to meet others! This hostel is in a great area and location to navigate the city. It's only like a four minute walk to the Central Station where you can easily catch a train to the airport!

It's been seven long years since I mostly didn't sleep at the Flying Pig Hostel on my travels in Amsterdam, seven years in which I've had time to reflect on hazy memories and come to the conclusion that this place is awful. Location: The Good: Centrally located. The Bad: Centrally located near garbage tourist hot spots and the seedy Red Light District. You're surrounded by British tourists who think nothing of pissing right next to the entrance of the hostel and junkies who will point you in the right direction if you give them a euro so they can buy "coffee." Building: The Good: It has walls. For the most part, they're not falling down. Mice are a problem, which is why they keep a cat here. The problem is the guests keep the cat very stoned, and I'm not sure how adept high cats are at catching mice. The Bad: The communal bathrooms (not located in the rooms) lack a sink and soap, meaning the hostel is filled with unwashed hands. I'm pretty sure this is why I acquired The Plague only two days into my stay. The Rooms: The Good: Lockers. The Bad: Everything else. The window in our room refused to open, which was fantastic considering Amsterdam was experiencing a heat wave akin to a typical summer in Florida. It was stifling to the point where every fart from our mysterious European roommate was amplified times ten. It smelled like death. When we arrived, it was obvious the sheets on our bed hadn't been changed (if pubes are any indication), but we passed out anyway. The bathroom was a toilet, a shower head and a hole in the floor, meaning the entire bathroom became a big sopping mess with every bath (of which you would need many). The layout: The Good: Multiple levels. The Bad: Just because the bar is upstairs and the pot rooms are downstairs doesn't mean the entire building doesn't smell like a skunk exploded. The Clientele: The Good: I was able to meet a few interesting people who were backpacking through Europe. The Bad: I mostly met burnouts from America and drunks from England on stag parties. I'll never forget the guy in dreadlocks who was so fucked up that he spent an entire day on the platform in the front room, locked in one spot, drool running down his chin. I poked him just to make sure he was alive, and he grunted. Amsterdam is a party city. Most of the people I met were barely conscious. It wasn't unusual to walk in on people in various stages of copulation in public areas. If this is your thing, you'll feel comfortable. I usually would run away in an embarrassing fit of giggles. Internet: The Good: It's free and I was able to use it to book a hotel far away from The Flying Pig Hostel. Granted, the hostel scene isn't for everybody. I would pick The Flying Pig over the hostels in Amsterdam where they trap you in and force you to participate in Christian singalongs (I swear they exist), but I wouldn't pick The Flying Pig over an alleyway. If you're going to sleep among foul odors while surrounded by shady people, you might as well do it for free.

An excellent place for pancakes that do things a little different that will make you keep coming back for more.

This place is freaking awesome. Talk about a place that has everything. Theres something for everyone, regardless if you want to chill, party, or get jiggy with it. The staff were so friendly and fun. Eleanor the sweetheart, Sam the jokester, Eddie the Izzard, Brandon the gas mask, Kiar the slap stick, and so many more. Awesome place

Ok, I'm torn. Here's the good, the bad and the ugly. The good: cheap, excellent central location, fun people, smoking room, free laptops to use. Fabulous free breakfast. The bad: LOUD. Like maybe even earplugs won't keep out the bar's music. Keycards don't work and you'll have to have yours reset a million times. The ugly: I'm pretty sure I got scabies from this place. Really, really gross. I thought this was some medieval ailment. I can assure you it lives. . . in the Flying Pig.

The Flying Pig is one of the most fun places to stay in Amsterdam for the budget traveler! This place fills up super-fast, so if you're traveling with a group of friends, make sure you book early (and don't be scared to split off into smaller groups either). This location of the Flying Pig is central to downtown and the train station (there's also one out near Vondelpark). It can be a little tricky to find, so make sure you have a map (the one in any guidebook will suffice, most likely). Prices are a little higher than, say Bob's, but the atmosphere and general "fun" of the place makes it worth it! The larger the room you decide to stay in, the cheaper it is (i.e., you want to a private bathroom, it's gonna cost you!). The loungey area out near the lobby is the perfect place to kick back and get into that book you've been carrying through 3 countries. Or to strike up conversation with fellow travelers from around the world. Make sure you use that storage locker under your bunk if you don't want to continue your journey with 1 less pair of jeans!

**For Uptown Flying Pig** This place is my favourite place in the entire world. The beds were clean and made properly (which can't be said for some hostels.) The smoke room is sound proof from the bar. You're centrally located, quick walk to anywhere you want to go. The showers could have used a bit more attention. I understand that some of the staff is there is working there for free room and board and don't generally care about service but it is the hospitality business after all. . .A little less sarcasm from the staff would go a long way. ;)

I have stayed at this hostel every time I am in Amsterdam. The vibe is amazing. There are so many people from all over the world, mingling together. The amount of different languages you hear upon walking in is out of this world. I went for the first time when I was 24 and just left today for my forth visit at 34. I highly recommend this hostel. Great location, close to shops, bars, food, the whole 9 yards.

As a traveler overseas it's hard to get used to the hostel style living. However, The Flying Pig is great and makes you feel completely at ease. I've stayed at a lot of hostels and let me tell you none of them (except for one in Rome that can come a tad bit close) can compare to this one. They even offer a small room (meaning not many beds inside) at a good price. Most places stick you in a room of what seems like an army of bodies, which can be uneasy at times. Another great part of The Flying Pig is that they have a "hangout" downstairs where people can chill and get in "the mood." However, if you're not used to the culture in Amsterdam prepare yourself for the downstairs cause it gets a bit cloudy at times. I loved every part of this place though because you get to experience Amsterdam first hand. The staff are all friendly and helpful as well, they gave us their opinion on where to go and pointed everything out on the map. If you're in the area and need a place to stay just give The Flying Pig a go..."Find us to get lost!" [Less Than Three]

One of my favorite hostels ever. The location is an easy half mile walk from the train station, in the heart of a great shopping district, and an easy jaunt to the red light district without actually having to stay in the seedy area that is the red light district. The decor was very bohemian, a nice chill out room right next to the entrance. It felt safe, you had to be let in the door, and then use a card to get into the entrance gate to the common areas. The employees were happy and helpful. There were several bookshelves for trading, some board games, internet access, and a bar. It was a great place to gather and meet other travelers. They had a DJ one Saturday night I was there and it was great for me to just stay in at the hostel and have a few drinks in the common room and make a couple new acquaintances, I found it was very easy to get around the square and catch trolleys to reach places farther away, The rooms themselves were pretty basic, bunk beds, and drawers for storage. There was a luggage room on the main floor if you wanted to leave your pack but you weren't checking back in. That didn't seem like the most secure situation, but I didn't have any problems. Hoping I get a chance to go back before I'm 40, the cut-off age for guests. I shared my dorm with three boys who I never saw, I fell asleep before they came home and snuck out before they woke up. So no problems there, no excessive noise in the rooms, but there was plenty of party in the common area at all times. I very much appreciated the communal kitchen and breakfast offerings, including the cozy basement lounge to eat and watch a little Dutch Mtv.

Refused to work with me when i was forced to cancel my trip due to the covid-19 pandemic and American travel ban. They implied that since other European countries still had free travel, I, an American would not be catered to during this time and they would charge me the full cancellation fee even though I tried to cancel within a half an hour of the travel ban being announced. They also told me that they were aware that they would have to change the terms and conditions of their cancellation policy due to the pandemic but just would not being doing so for my party. I'm very upset with the service I received and had to go as far as saying I'd be disputing the charge with my bank before they offered any compromise. Even then they only offered to rebook my stay for another date and refused any refunds. Still angry, dont stay here, i'd give zero stars if possible.

Usually I stay at a regular hotel, but this time decided to try a hostel because I wanted the full "European backpacker"experience. And because they have a lounge downstairs where you can enjoy a smoke comfortably... Anyway, it's a very safe place, in a really good location near shops, bars, and red light. We had a room with a private bath, which was a nice size and clean. It is a bit loud at night. Lots of doors slamming and you can hear people talking in the halls, but it's a trade off for the bar and lounge. The staff is friendly, and they have towels for rent if you're living out of a backpack, also a blow dryer. Yeah, it's a younger crowd, but it's fine! We're in our 30's and didn't feel weird. It was a cool experience.

They keep this place pretty clean for how huge it is. Definitely not just Americans here. In my room, there were some guys from Peru, and when I got back from exploring the city a bit, there were two nice little English girls having a picnic on my bed, stoned off their ass. Oh hai. To-MAH-to. However, it would have been nice for a shower to be attached to the room. Instead, we had to go to the basement to shower and it was just a tad gross for what the rooms cost. The location probably couldn't be more perfect.

***Just a heads up this review is for the Flying Pig Noordwijk. I chose the Flying Pig because the price was right and the reviews were fantastic! I wasn't disappointed. For a place to party, it's hard to beat the pig. The staff were friendly but if you take the shuttle be prepared for a wild ride! And that brings me to... Location- If you are considering Noordwijk be aware that it is about 45 minutes by shuttle to Amsterdam. At the time I went it was €4 for the shuttle each way and €12 to take the train and the bus from A Centraal. And the beach is gorgeous in good weather!

Amazing hostel, great prices, and a cool bar at the entrance = perfect place to stay in Amsterdam. Located near Amsterdam central station it is just a short walk to this hip hostel. Awaiting you is loud music, a good crowd and some great drink specials. I was only able to stay here one night, but I thought it was fairly clean and they provided you with pretty decent lockers. The workers were also very nice and we even bought one a shot. This hostel lives up to its online reviews, I hope this helps future Amsterdam visitors. This place isn't five stars for the decor at all. It is quite outdated and many Americans won''t like the cleanliness factor. This hostel is all about meeting new people and I believe it does its job to entertain its guests.

My friend and I had an unacceptable and terrifying experience while staying at the Flying Pig Downtown. At 3:30 in the morning, a couple noisily stumbled into the standard 18-person mixed room we were staying in (room #1), turning on all the lights and shouting at each other loudly, waking the rest of the room. The guy, (who was very drunk), began yelling and incessantly demanding that the woman he was with come be with him immediately. She told him to quiet down but he quickly became angry, and began to actually chase her around the room, trying to grab her against her will. The woman was scared and uncomfortable (as were all of us who were staying in the room, who had been asleep until this disruptive and scary event). She attempted to get away from him, and he ended up purposefully grabbing her and slamming her fingers into the door as she tried running down the hall, pushing and shoving her into the wall. She started screaming and crying, and took her items and tried to escape, again to no avail, because once again, he grabbed her against her will and pushed her back into the room. I waited until this violent and abusive person turned around so I could safely run past him and report what was happening to the man working at the front desk upstairs. I was terrified (several women in the room were whispering to each other, panicked and shocked, wondering what to do), and ran as quickly as possible, as this situation was not only extremely disruptive and unsettling, but was quickly becoming more dangerous. The man on duty at the front desk that night seemed to take my panicked complaint seriously at first. He went down to address the problem, and I felt a small sense of relief that the situation would be properly handled by staff, as all of this was clearly against hostel policy for multiple reasons, in addition to the fact that this guest was a threat to others. However, I was quickly disappointed and proven wrong: not only was the abuser allowed to stay in the hostel (!!!), but he was given absolutely no kind of punishment, and no reparations to other guests affected by the incident were made. The abusive person was merely asked to get to bed and to calm down, while I was asked not to call the police if any further situation occurred, but to let the hostel know instead, because the hostel "really didn't want to get the police involved." The man on duty who I had reported the situation to quickly went back to smoking and playing pool as if nothing had happened, while my friend and I sat in the reception area, shaking and unsettled, wondering what to do since it would be impossible to go back to sleep/would be very uncomfortable to be in the same room as this violent man (who was, by the way, still awake and pacing around the room until after 5 in the morning). It seemed that no sense of customer service or concern existed by Flying Pig staff, and there was no sensitivity to the fact that there was a man in our room who had just become extremely violent and abusive. Staff ultimately shrugged off this very serious issue, and my friend and I were forced to go without more than 2 hours of sleep that night. I asked another staff member (also a male), why this person was allowed to stay in the hostel after such horrific behavior, also suggesting that my friend and I should not be charged for our stay as we couldn't even make use of the room we had paid for. The matter was once again shrugged off by staff, and I was told that we needed to get back to bed and that things "just didn't work that way" despite the fact that his behavior was in clear violation of hostel policy. I have since written to management and demanded a refund, since that request was scoffed at by employees while I was there. Fortunately, the manager said she will refund us, but I still feel other travelers should be warned about this place. The employee at Flying Pig Downtown put others at risk by allowing a violent person to stay in the hostel, just because he did not care to take the time to handle things properly.

**This is for the Uptown Flying Pig Hostel Was ideally priced since we were looking for a place to literally just sleep (since during the day we'd be your typical tourist adventuring around the city). Came out to 35 euros/night, and even though we barely spent any time at the hostel, the few hours that we did, was definitely a pleasant experience. The staff are all welcoming and helpful as far as checking in, getting the gist of the neighborhood, as well as offering advice as to the different events and activities to do. The building itself is a little cramped at first, but in the basement they have a pretty well stocked bar, as well as a prime smoking room - great to meet people and socialize. There are numerous washrooms and bathrooms on over 4 floors, and it was never a tough time to find an open stall to use (and the staff cleans on a regular basis). Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to visit Amsterdam and would like to stay in a hostel.

So! You step of the train and begin your journey into Amsterdam central (which all sorta looks the same) and look what you have.. The flying pig five minutes away right on the shopping street and close to everything you need. One star! You arrive to smiley friendly staff (abit slow on service but always warm and welcoming).. No hassle booking in and lots of information told about the rules and stuff. Everything according to plan after using booking.com. Two stars! Got into our private room (wasn't too keen on sharing with strangers).. Small but tidy and exactly what you'd expect from a hostel. Three stars! Then of course the fourth star was for the amazing chilled smoking room and bar. Drink was normal price done a few deals like two corona for €6. Great music and really chilled out people. Never once felt uncomfortable and got to meet people from all over the world. Also at the bar you can buy grinders and essentials you might need for cheap than outside. Air plugs are free at the counter because the place can tend to get noisy but your in the middle of the centre of Amsterdam in a hostel. If you don't wanna party don't come to this place. Also the lift is really noisy at night that's what let it down for five stars. And bring your own hairdryer and essentials. Would defo come back can't wait to again

My bag along with my passport were stolen at a bar in the redlight district and the hostel staff was VERY helpful! I cannot thank them enough! Also the hostel itself was very clean, and the location was so great! I loved the smoking room and the little bar. I will def stay here again!

The Flying Pig Downtown Amsterdam, Netherlands Originally when I called for a reservation they were booked full. I called again upon my arrival into Amsterdam and they had cancellations and I was able to be accommodated. I preferred to stay here because of its great location near tourist places I wanted to walk to and see. It was an economical choice when I was traveling alone. I'd backpacked Europe before and stayed in hostels before one thing that stood out was that the room I stayed in had more then 5 bunk beds in it and all the beds were full so there were more then ten other people in the same room as I was in. There wasn't any privacy but when you stay in hostels limited privacy is usually a given. I was only there to sleep and shower and after walking and touring all day I was so exhausted I fell asleep right away even with a room full of strangers in it. If I knew someone who was trying to see Amsterdam on a budget and they didn't mind sacrificing privacy to save a lot of money I would recommend this hostel to them. I felt safe, got sleep, a hot shower and I was able to tour Amsterdam and that's what I had hoped for. Considering this is a hostel I will give it three stars when comparing it to other hostels I've stayed at. I'd stay here again if I was traveling solo.

Best hostel in Amsterdam! I've stayed at this hostel on 4 different occasions. The vibe as soon as you walk in the door is chill, chill, chill. They've got great music constantly playing that promotes this chill atmosphere. It's in a great spot too, centrally located in the heart of the city. There's a bar downstairs along with a lounge area. I don't really know what else to call it. It's about a foot higher than the rest of the first floor and it's covered with pillows and other comfort items. This area has 2 foot high tables, so you can put your food, drink and whatever... Everyone just chills. The accommodations are average. One time I stayed here, the water pressure in the shower was horrible, but hey it's a hostel, what are you gonna do. This place is all about the atmosphere and the people. They have a free breakfast every morning too, that is of course if you're up that early. It is Amsterdam after all!!!! Highly recommended! 5 stars!

When my friend told me he booked a hostel, I was worried, but ended up being pleasantly surprised. This place is clean, breakfast is included (and is actually good), and people who do not have a room are unable to come in. If you have friends who are not staying at the hostel the last part might be a negative, but it's nice to know that they don't let random people inside. I find that the lockers near/under the beds are a bit small, especially for people with hiking backpacks (but my carry on sized suitcase with wheels just barely fit in the locker). The location is excellent. What surprised me the most were the super clean showers, and also super modern! I would stay here again, and would recommend this place to anyone! If you are hesitant about hostels like me, give this place a try! Flying Pig thank you for the hospitality During my stay everyone just slept in the rooms, there was never any excessive talking or noise and I stayed in a room with 16 beds!

My favorite Hostel ever. They had a Heineken machine near the rooms. Lockers to keep your belongings safe, friendly crowd, a full bar, a smoke room, it is close to the train station and lots of fun stuff. I found this place by accident and was very happy that I did. I could have easily spent more time just hanging out there, but its Amsterdam so I didn't.

This is the best hostel I've been to! I loved how everyone was so friendly and how I had my own bathroom. I loved the decor such as a stuffed piggy flying above the pool table. They have a lounge area behind the bar where you can meet other travelers such as yourself. I stayed in the lounge for four hours, it was that chill! They lend out laptops with Internet access, another plus for me. If this place wasn't for you, then you weren't meant to stay in a hostel.

I really enjoyed this hotel. The beds are extremely comfortable!

Stayed here in a double-bed private. I've stayed in hostels in both private and non-private rooms before and thought that, though this is definitely a "chill" place to stay in a nice uptown location, it was pretty low value relative to price. Felt a bit cheated after staying at St. Christopher's the next few nights, also in a double-bed private but with much more space, a private bathroom, and more comfortable accommodations (at a similar cost).

One of my favorite hostels! Awesome bar and lounge area downstairs has a hippy vibe. This is a great place to meet up with other 20-something travelers. The facilities are clean and reasonably priced. If you have a big group, you might be better off getting an apartment. Still, this place offers the experience of meeting new people with a convenient location near the train station and shops.

Location was good. And would probably be acceptable/fun for college kids on spring break with friends. But I would never recommend this to a solo traveler, or one over the age of 21. Only one, tiny, cramped smoking room, where the music ranged from stereotypical reggae to stereotypical Warren G; gross bathrooms; entry cards that kept getting unmagnetized; and crazy loud dorms. Not saying it's not good for some people- just not us.

Flying Pig Downtown is definitely the best value for money you can get! It's right in the middle of the city centre and if you book well in advance you have a chance of getting even a 2 bed room for as little as 50 bucks a night. staff and guests are always friendly and helpful and if you spend your evening in the designated chill out area you are sure to meet many interesting people!

I stayed here back in '09. I got a 6-person room, which was three bunk beds. I met some awesome people and the complimentary breakfast is good. The staff was very friendly and our room was clean! The location is perfect - right in the heart of downtown. At the time I stayed in their small outdoor area between the common room and dorm they had a table that was covered in various traveler's initials and whatnot- super cool! I loved their common room which was lined with book shelves - take one, leave one, or just casually read one while you hang out!
