Well, we tried The Franklin Inn. I was pretty excited to do so since I've heard such good reviews about the restaurant. Upon entering, around 7pm on a Tuesday night, no one greeted us. The place is very small. Some might prefer to call the space cozy or quaint. Others may choose to call the space cramped. Either way, the space is too small not to be greeted when you enter. I guess it's too small for a hostess too. So we didn't really know whether to stand at the door (there's no lobby or entry area) so we just walked straight to a table and had a seat.
By and by, the bartender came to our table and was a very nice, attentive, pleasant server. Things began to look up! There were other customers seated in the few booths and a few people at the bar.
We ordered the bacon-wrapped cod special and the cheese-steak sandwich with sweet potato fries. The sandwich was great and the fries were too! I wished I had ordered it! Unfortunately, I had to suffer through the cod. The presentation on both dishes was fantastic! The cod fingers looked very delicious with the bacon spiraled around them and it was served on a fancy rice medley. The rice had some type of brown noodles in them which reminded me of the Rice-A-Roni product. This rice was described as being in "browned butter" but the end result was more like a greasy fried rice. The accompanying vegetables were tasty....slivered red peppers, zucchini, and yellow squash, seasoned and sauteed. Of course, this made for a very colorful, pretty presentation. But unfortunately, I was very dissatisfied with the fish. The texture was very off. Instead of flaky, it was very, very spongy. It seemed as if it was frozen, thawed, and refrozen, then cooked or something. I am very familiar with cod but I have never quite seen the texture of the fish like that. I just couldn't eat it.
I feel as if I just picked the wrong dish. My husband's sandwich was great! Other dishes that came out of the kitchen looked great! I would return to try other dishes.
Also, the owner came in and spoke to everyone. That was a nice touch. They've also just opened their sister corner market across the street. Parking is on the street. It is not a place for a large party. The kitchen is a bit slow, so don't go if you are in a rush. There were some interesting historic pictures on the walls.
