The Baker Behind Some of the Best Carby, Buttery Goods in New York | Bon Appétit

"This hotel created a bespoke head-baker role to coordinate baking across multiple in-house concepts; the baker oversees a small team and a production commissary, turning out breads and pastries intended to support chefs but that have become destination items in their own right. Signature contributions include black bread and pitas for dips, laminated seaweed bread for sandwiches, craveworthy cookies and cakes for display, and a years-in-the-making chocolate morning bun. The position is described as collaborative and quietly essential rather than flashy, and the baker’s quirky, ingredient-forward sensibility has made these baked goods the breakout stars of the property." - ByElyse Inamine

I’ve loved my time at freehand! The gym is beautiful with plenty of equipment and natural lighting. The newly remodeled apartments are refreshing and very clean! The maintenance team has responded quickly with any help I have needed, as well as management with any questions I have had. The location is amazing being so close to everything. I would highly recommend living here!

My wife and I have been living at The FreeHand for about three months, and overall it’s been a good experience. When we first moved in, the floors were not as clean as we would have hoped but after reaching out to The FreeHand, they were able to work out a solution with us. Other than that, we had one small issue with some shelves in our apartment, but maintenance came by the very next day and fixed everything quickly. The gym is a great addition — we especially enjoy playing ping pong there. The only downside is that laundry is a bit pricey in my opinion (about $5 total per load: $2.25 to wash and $2.25 to dry). We live in one of the studio apartments. It’s definitely on the smaller side, but the appliances are all new. They also offer one-bedroom units if you need more space; it just depends on what you’re looking for. We definitely pay for the location, but for us it’s been worth it. Overall, we’re happy to give The FreeHand a 5-star review. I’ll update this review when our lease ends.

We’ve absolutely loved living at this apartment complex! The community is clean, quiet, and well-maintained. The gym is a huge bonus—it's always tidy, never overcrowded, and has everything I need for a good workout. The laundry room is also super convenient and well-kept, which makes chores so much easier. The management team is responsive and helpful, and neighbors are friendly.

Part 2 They recently leased an apartment to a creepy bald guy in his 50s, and now my girlfriend is afraid to use the gym or switch the laundry by herself. He’s clearly unemployed and is constantly hanging out on the grounds. Every time we walk past he ignores me, but then stares at my girlfriend, tries to talk to her, and follows her around. I’ve told her to her to look right past him and pretend he isn’t there, but he just won’t quit. He also walks his dog every morning, and stops right in front of our apartment and just looks inside for about 15 minutes every day so we have to close the blinds. We recently had a package stolen from our doorstep. Despite having a camera pointed right at our door, management claims they don’t have the footage, probably because the thief is a resident they want to protect. We get a ton of junk mail from previous residents that just keeps coming despite informing the post office. Freehand management refuses to put a garbage by the mailboxes because it would “harm the aesthetic of the lobby.” Currently, we have major cracks forming around the windows, doorways, walls, and ceiling of the apartment. I reached out to management, concerned about the cracks, and they responded sarcastically, and still have not bothered to take a look at them. I plan to call Provo code enforcement tomorrow and hopefully get someone to make sure the apartment won’t collapse in on us. TLDR: Don’t live here.

The Freehand is very well kept and clean. I love that it is indoors, modern, and has several amenities. The location is great too. Plenty of parking. Biggest critique is that adjacent and upstairs neighbors are loud (thin walls and hardwood floors above). Overall a great place to live!

Very new apartment, each studio is small but comes furnished with a TV, chairs/table and the only thing needed to but was a mattress. Cons: after hours service is terrible so if you get locked out good luck, the washing machine/dryer is common for the whole complex so timing is key to make sure you get an available W/D when you need it. Also costs $2.50 each wash or dry. Lastly the induction stoves are hard to cook on you have to buy new pans to fit the stoves and sometimes the burners themselves lose heat making it hard to cook more complex meals. Overall, great location and price but can improve on laundry room, burners, and after hours service

We’ve had numerous issues with the Freehand since moving in. This is a joint review with my girlfriend down below, as we have too many problems to fit in the word count. Part 1 First off, when we got the keys the place was filthy with gunk on the floor and walls, dirty underwear under the bed, and garbage wrappers under the couch and in the cupboards. It took several hours of deep cleaning to make it livable. From day one, the AC in the room reeked of mold/mildew, and after several months of begging them to fix or replace it, we were told to try Febreeze and get over it.  I had to threaten to withhold rent and fix it myself before they finally relented. We were also told during our tour that one freehand amenity is a tv in every room, but they backtracked after we moved in saying they only provide the mount in the bedroom, and we needed to buy the tv ourselves. The first month rent was supposed to be free, but their autopay screwed up and charged us anyways, and caused returned payment fees with the Freehand and my bank. The Freehand eventually waived their fee after weeks of me nagging them, but refused to cover my bank’s fee. We’ve had numerous issues with washing machines and dryers breaking, and not washing correctly despite costing $5 a load. Water pressure in the shower is also horribly weak, and it takes forever just to wash off.

This is an excellent place to live! They take great care of you and has lots of amenities like the gym, the laundry room, the study hall and the clubhouse with lots of snacks for vending. I use the amenities as much as possible and it makes me so happy to be in a great community. I would recommend this place to anyone!
