Small Cheval Gets an Opening Date in Logan Square | Eater Chicago

"The beloved ice cream stand operated for around 73 years before closing in 2023 when ownership sold to Hogsalt. After the sale, the stand’s name was quickly incorporated onto Hogsalt’s ice cream menus. The stand’s iconic sign was briefly removed during construction work, which prompted concern in the community." - Ashok Selvam

Killer burger and fries! Can't beat a place like this. Gotta get some signature treats next time around.

19JUNE2025 Great customer service and delicious treats and food.

Been awhile since I got regular food at The Freeze. We mostly go for ice cream. Love a twist cone or one of their milkshakes.

Google
Man forget all these questions they ask I want to post a picture. I just bought chicken tenders and a pound of fries that was over 7 dollars for 3 chicken tenders and the chicken tender size I got was ridiculously small. The one tender was the size of a single small shot bottle. The sauce packs they give you was bigger then the tender. And one of the other ones was far at all from the same size. I think yall need to do better on the portion sizes

I’ve been here multiple times and order the same thing every time and I will not be going back after my recent visit because it’s pretty obvious that they’re scamming people out of their money. I was there recently and ordered a large chocolate ice cream cone and a large strawberry banana milkshake and I paid almost $15. The time before that I ordered the same thing and it was around $12. Their prices are never consistent, the owners are about as dull as a door knob, they have terrible customer service skills, I could go on and on. I only continued to go there to support a local business but it’s clear to me that I’m getting ripped off every time and I don’t take kindly to that. Needless to say I will not be going back and I do not recommend this place to anyone

Google
I’ve been coming to the freeze since I was a little kid, and it has never failed me as the most consistent ice cream place around. I’m glad they’ve been able to stay open so long, and after seeing a review criticizing the rise in prices, I’m thrilled seeing a traditional family owned ice cream parlor stay open in todays market. I’ll pay for their milkshakes any day. Without places like Procolino’s, Louisa’s, and The Freeze, the charm of Chestertown would dwindle for me and many others. I speak for all residents of Chestertown and people in the area that The Freeze is more than an ice cream place, it is a home. I love this place and always will.

Google
Great soft serve ice cream options but no place to sit and a bit run down.

Google
This is a small little ice cream place but the food was so good. The crispy chicken sandwich and the burger were great and their prices are reaaonable. Not a lot of room to ait and eat in but nothing wrong with to go either.

Yelp
Fun spot found on the main street going through Chestertown that has solid eats. Can't miss their sign. It's an independent burger joint/ice cream shop, and I love to support spots like these. Had a good burger with wonderful, crispy onion rings and a huge, tasty vanilla shake. All made in front of me. It's a throwback place with reliable cooking, quick service, and personable staff. Keep it up, Freeze. I'll be back.

Yelp
Cute little mom and pop shop with something for everyone. Just some good, greasy food with homemade touches. So sweet and polite we got great service. Prices are very fair. Quick service. Ice cream and milk shakes are delicious. I wanted to try everything! Def a must when in chestertown!

Yelp
Great service awesome ice cream and huge portions!!! I got a milkshake & loved every second of it

Yelp
Wonderful local place. Old school ice cream, cold beverage, and food. Friendly and helpful. Patient with the "newbie"
google avatar

Yelp
Average icecream basic two flavors. Not much to talk about. Staff is polite and friendly.

Yelp
We were staying in Betterton, MD for the weekend and looking for a quick/good place to eat, with a yummy treat. Our food was HOT! Fries were delicious, and our sundaes/ice cream was delicious! Only reason I didn't give 5 stars ...is it would be nice to have a few picnic tables or somewhere outside to sit. Although this would NOT prevent us from returning, if we are in the area again.

Yelp
Feeling hot? Then The Freeze is for you. Well, it's for you if you enjoy ice cream and fast food and a feeling almost like some kind of small town spot from the 1950's or something out of a tv show about middle America. "Hey, wanna go down to The Freeze?" Sure, let's head on over! This Chestertown staple holds no place to actually sit as it's more of an indoor counter area where you'll order up and then eat outside (or in your car). You can't miss the place driving by. Between the giant frozen lettered logo and a life size replica of Mater from "Cars", you'll know you've found it. I've been here twice and both times it was for the same thing: a milkshake. Let's just say the second trip was due to the first. My girlfriend and I were here for round 1 a year ago in June and then again earlier this month. We entered post-dinner time and wanted dessert, choosing one of their many milkshake flavors. Peanut butter was the winner for us both and it did the trick with a vanilla base and plenty of what seemed to taste like Reese's as the PB. Don't like peanut butter? (Who are you!?) There's plenty of other options with more than fifteen milkshakes to choose from. Beyond that, you'll find a menu of fried food favorites and ice cream with tons of toppings, because it is called The Freeze, right? Right. Overall, The Freeze kinda feels like a place frozen in time from its old school looks and classic setup. It's no destination spot, but if you do find yourself in Chestertown on a hot summer day, get cool in here.

Yelp
Retro place with all your favorites! Twist cones, banana splits, milkshakes and burgers!! Check out how clean the flat top is!

Yelp
Visited from DE. Saw this nearby and wanted to try it out. My friend got a grilled cheese and that took little too long for them to make but i got ice cream and it was soooo good! Very old timey feel inside too! Something straight out of a movie lol.

Yelp
The Freeze, which was once known as Downey's, is an old-school diner-esque carry-out place, serving up burgers, subs, ice cream, sundaes, and milkshakes. The hubs and I came here while we were in the area, and we ordered the following: an Oreo milkshake (this was not too thick and not too thin, had a good amount of Oreo within, and made with softserve; it was pretty good), a Butterscotch milkshake (I was not a fan of this, as it had no butterscotch taste to it; the vanilla soft serve also seemed to have been tainted with the butterscotch syrup that was supposedly used), and The Big Freeze (this was a Big Mac-esque type of a burger; a sesame seed bun filled with two juicy patties and all of the works, including Thousand Island dressing; this was really delicious! Since it was hot off the griddle, it was super hot and juicy; all of the condiments inside also made this burger pretty good - the relish, the ketchup, the mustard, the cheese, the onions, etc. It gets a little sloppy, but it's worth it!). Just note that there are a couple of benches to wait for your order to be ready, but it's strictly a carry-out place. The staff here are no-nonsense, but friendly. There's a $10 minimum, and plenty of parking in their private lot. +The Big Freeze! :D +Oreo milkshake +carry-out only +free parking

Yelp
There is no place to sit inside or out. The staff seemed inexperienced. The ice cream was nothing special.

Yelp
Terrible, unfriendly service. This place doesn't have sundae tops, nor do they even bother to add whipped cream or cherries to their sundaes!...What kind of ice cream place does that? The brownie I had added to my sundae was dry, and tasted old. The shakes we got had flavors mixed in that weren't incorporated fully. This place also does not have dip for cones...Again, what kind of ice cream place doesn't offer dip for cones? Not impressed. None of us will return. I'll take my business to a place that knows how to do ice cream right, and cares about the quality and experience of it's customers.
google avatar

Crystal T.

Yelp
Love it. Best soft serve ever. So creamy and the hot fudge is perfect. They give you huge portions too.
google avatar

Richard M.

Yelp
It's called "The Freeze" and they only have a vanilla/chocolate soft serve machine. I don't understand the appeal, but the town is about one intersection long, so...

Alan S.

Yelp
A tad bit pricey for this kind of service. They need a menu item that will wow the customer like a deep fried double footlong hot dog with chili and cheese or something. If this place simplified the menu with a couple wow items they could make a killing.

Yelp
This is old style Americana dining with fresh cooked to order burgers, chicken, and fries. Made to order shakes and malts. I've made it a regular habit over the last 8 weeks to stop in and grap a small twist soft-serve chocolate-vanilla ice cream cone. For a little under $2 you get a 6-inch frozen swirl treat on a cone or in a dish. You gotta try this place, you will absolutely love it!!!

Roy D.

Yelp
Ok place but something that bothered me was the girl made my shake too large to get a lid on and she took a spoon and scooped it out and then was knocking the spoon on the side of the trash can and sticking in back in my shake! Needless to say I asked to have a new one made after some push back initially. I don't know anyone that would be ok with a spoon from the side of a trash can jammed into your shake before you have it... do you?
google avatar

Tammy S.

Yelp
You have to try the chicken salad sandwich AMAZING! If you love milk shakes your in the right place. If you don't see the kind of milk shake you want then just bring the ingredients and they will put it together for you.

Lynnie D.

Yelp
Cute little place but No table & chairs to sit & eat, not even outside. And WHERES MATER??????????
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
Only getting a two because of the cherry milkshake. I grew up eating here and came back for a visit and the fries changed and they now suck. The burger was not something I would order again. Guess things changed while I was gone and I can scratch it off the list of places I want to come back too.

Yelp
Got the cheeseburger and fries. Just wanted something better than McDonalds, but gotta say, this was worse. The burger itself had no flavor. Honestly, go to the Dollar General and buy the burger in the box. It is better and will save you $5.00. The fries were fresh and hot. Just trying to find a decent burger in Chestertown that doesn't cost $10.00 - ridiculous.

Trish Y.

Yelp
Always friendly and the best fries, burgers, and shakes! Their Ice cream cones are always a treat!

Yelp
This is an adorable, divey place that has that small town America feel down pat! I was in Chestertown for work and stopped by here one evening for dessert. The staff were a bunch of wholesome, slightly nervous teenagers, and the clientele were townies with their families. My hot fudge sundae with "wet nuts" (walnuts soaked in corn syrup- yum!) was only about $3.50, and well worth it! My only complaint is that there is no seating either inside or outside the store. I think adding an outdoor seating area (there's plenty of room in the parking lot) would make this place 5 star worthy!

Deanna S.

Yelp
Big freeze is the ultimate burger. Service isn't fast and not dine in but everything is fresh
google avatar

Ken N.

Yelp
The Freeze is proof positive that there never was anything ungreat about America in the first place. Awesome everything. Throwback place. Cannot ever change and frankly should be listed on the National Register of Historic Places....no wait, don't tell anyone, particularly da guvment!
google avatar

Yelp
This is quite a delightful place. It's a perfect old-school take-out spot. We got a delicious sundae with hot fudge and a waffle cone with soft serve. I will say, the ice cream flavors were a bit more limited than I was expecting -- just chocolate and vanilla -- but there are many more milkshake flavors and plenty of ice cream toppings. We ate in the parking lot, sitting on the back of our pick-up truck. Small town summer perfection. I will be returning for the savory food options! Note: the prices are VERY reasonable.

Yelp
I love this place, I've been going here since I was a little girl back when it was all called Downey's. My parents used to always get us all a pound of fries to share and we'd each get a ice cream cone. I'd always get half and half swirl, that's chocolate and vanilla swirled together. In high school I'd always stop and get fries with a mocha shake. I still stop on an occasion. I take my mom or my nieces, we all love it.

Yelp
We were in town visiting and drove by and initially joked about going there but later when we were in the mood for some icecream we went and were NOT disappointed. It may not look like much on the outside but I had a pretty slammingly awesome sunday and my husband had one of the best milk shakes he's ever had. You know a place is good when you are clearly the only tourists and everyone else are locals.
google avatar

Matt M.

Yelp
Stopped in for a wedding and got three milkshakes. They were three of the best milkshakes I've ever consumed. They are to die for.

Brian A.

Yelp
Best shakes, burgers, and fries around. Fair prices. The establishment seemed clean enough. Minus 1-star for lack of employee energy. I feel like the ladies working the orders despise customers for making them work. Maybe some smiles and greeting of customers would go far. This joint definitely has the small town charm, so maybe the ladies behind the counter should too. I'll be back! I can't get enough strawberry shakes and big freeze burgers!
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
stayed at the comfort inn down the block for a wedding this past weekend and decided to check these guys out given their awesome name. ordered a Boston shake, which is variously described along the Mason-Dixie line as a shake/sundae combo that as far as i can tell is never actually consumed in New England (though truth be told i've only lived there about a year now and could do some more investigating~) threw in some wet nuts--walnuts soaked in corn/maple sizzurp--and whipped cream to treat myself to a delicious, albeit once-per-lifetime-for-obvious-health-reasons, piece of Americana

Yelp
Love grabbing subs here, or a quick sweet treat. Chicken philly is great. Legit milkshakes

Izzy M.

Yelp
Famous around Chestertown as an amazing place to go to cool off in the hot Maryland summer! Original flavors and great tastes, 10/10 DO recommend.
google avatar

Rebekah S.

Yelp
Best milkshakes and sundaes!!! Love our local spot with a nostalgic flare. Prices were fantastic, great flavor and super clean! The freeze is always a pleasant place to have a treat!
google avatar

Johnni C.

Yelp
The freeze has a wonderful variety of milkshakes and malts that don't cost much my only complaint is there lack of seating which is perfectly okay for there size but sometimes it would be nice to sit in the air conditioning and enjoy your cold treat

Yelp
at washington college for a summer program. had to get off campus for a sweet treat. the banana oreo milkshake was delightful! take it down by the river for a relaxing evening (bring bug spray).
