New England Restaurants Offering Government Shutdown Meal Deals | Eater Boston

"I found that at all Friendly Toast locations federal and government workers and a guest can get free entrees through the end of the shutdown (proof of employment or valid ID required); the complimentary meal includes two entrees from the current menu or weekly specials and a soft drink, and is valid at breakfast, lunch, and dinner (appetizers and alcohol excluded)." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

So good we had to go twice in the 3 days we were visiting Burlington. The perfect meal for nursing a hangover. The Monte Madame and pumpkin spice coffee was exactly what I needed. The second time was the eggs Benny and their pumpkin spice martini. Yes, I have a problem and yes, it’s pumpkin related. Great, attentive staff and fun decor created a fantastic experience.

We visit for brunch every time we are in town. Always good, but PLEASE PLEASE bring back the beautifully plated savory chicken and waffles. It was always genius -- the best thing on the menu. The new skillet bowl version lacks the presentation vibrancy and wow factor, and simply doesn't bring the same "feature menu item" appeal and robust flavor combinations that the savory chicken and waffles has always brought. Thanks!!!

This place is so fun! There’s so much to look at on every wall, the art is just so fun! Every time we go it’s never disappointing. The mimosa flights are soooo good!! The staff is always super friendly and fun as well! This is probably the restaurant I will miss the most when we move in a couple weeks!

A quaint brunch spot in Burlington that serves all the classic brunch hits and sometimes with a twist. The whacky psychedelic decor is definitely worth the visit alone. It's a bit hard to find a seat at rush times though so we ended up at the bar which wasn't too bad since it was just two people.

This is a brunch place with a fun retro vibe (M-F 7:30am – 2:30pm and Sa Su 7:30am – 4pm). We’ve seen the long wait lines on weekends and were nearby on a Monday morning so we decided to try it. Service was fast and prompt (it may be different on a jam packed weekend). They have a number of tables inside. We thoroughly enjoyed this delicious breakfast food. I ordered the Monster Breakfast: 2 pancakes or French toast, 2 eggs made to order, choice of breakfast meat, home fries & real maple syrup. I added a side order of sour dough toast. I knew I wasn’t going to finish it but knew my group would share the pancakes. We also tried the churro bites and side of fruit salad. And a classic breakfast: 2 eggs any style, choice of breakfast meat, home fries and sour dough toast. Overeasy eggs were cooked perfectly. 3 slices of thick cut lean bacon with excellent flavor cooked perfectly. The 2 slices of ham were superb. Pancakes were light and fluffy. The real maple syrup was served in mini bottles custom made for Friendly Toast – the waitress even offered for me to take my 2nd mini bottle home because I had only used 1 bottle. The toast was lightly toasted but not very sourdough-y tasting and 2 small half slices – for $3 side, I would have expected 4 small half slices – maybe it’s from a special bakery but it wasn’t listed like that. The coffee was good but standard and they did not offer a refill. The home fries were not great – they were neither crispy nor flavorful. We didn’t finish the churros – we should have read the menu closer as it is paired with “spicy strawberry habanero jam” – creative? yes, tasty? no. We thought we were having a food allergy because we couldn’t figure out the tingling in our mouths. Our fault – we didn’t read the menu carefully and this just wasn’t for us. The fruit salad was mostly melon hidden underneath a top layer of a strawberry cut in half and a handful of blueberries – not worth $6 side. Prices are reasonable except the sides as noted. Overall, this is a great brunch spot with a fun character.

Google
The food was unlike anything I've ever had and unbelievably delicious. They put a nice modern twist on classic dishes to bring their own style. I got to enjoy the breakfast egg rolls and Cuban Benedict, perfectly paired with their house-made sauce. The restaurant is also bright, inviting and a little wacky with their decor. The staff were attentive and friendly even when they were obviously quite busy. As a walk in I was sat, served quickly, and never felt like I was left waiting for anything.

Google
What a fun experience! This is a no-brainer choice for breakfast anytime. Peppa with the green hair took great care of us sitting at the bar. While I suspect this place is crazy busy on the weekends, it was not busy at all on an early Friday morning. The food was amazing, an eclectic mix of everyday things with new twists added to give them an entirely different twist. Those giant cheddar tots are amazing.

Stopped here after getting off the fairy from New York! Came on a roadtrip from Missouri and needed some food! This was such a great place! Their boozy coffee flight is amazing as well as their Bloody Mary! I got an omelet and was very pleased. However, the only thing that made me sad was not being able to purchase the friendly toast pint glass they put their Bloody Marys in, it was so cute I would have paid $20 for the one on the table but the waiter said no. lol. Would come back!

Yelp
Good and service. We are vegan and they have a good choices of food. I highly recommend eating there.

Yelp
My husband and I decided to check out this place for Breakfast one morning. The decor inside is super fun and I could spend all day looking at all the items around the restaurant, and I love the bright colors. I started with the Watermelon Faux-Jito Mocktail to drink. It was minty, Watermelony and very refreshing. My husband got the 'Breakfast Burrito' to eat which was a flour tortilla filled with scrambled eggs, jalapeño-jack, jumbo cheddar tater tots, black beans, fire roasted poblano corn, pico de gallo & chipotle sauce. It was pretty big size, served with home fries and he didn't even finish all the home fries. He loved it. I had the 'Rice Rice Baby' which was rice, black beans, fire roasted poblano corn, grilled chicken, pico de gallo, avocado crema, pickled onion, cotija, sliced avocado, Nacho Cheese Doritos® & cilantro. This was so flavorful. I would never have thought to put Doritos on top but they were a perfect crunch. In addition to the decor, the service was great. Our server was quick, knowledgeable and friendly. I love how all the servers kinda had that 'just woke up' look and the whole style of just "I am being me!". I love that! We had a local place here in NJ called the 'Inkwell' which is now closed down. I loved that place and this place reminded me SO much of it. I would definitely recommend and would come back!

Yelp
This place is a very cute spot. Nice decorations and vibe. Our server was also so nice. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich which was really good. I never order chicken salad out, but honestly it was amazing, and not too sweet it was actually savory. Nothing mixed in the chicken salad over powered the flavor of the actual chicken which was nice. When it said "on a croissant" this isn't what I was expecting but it was really good. It looks dry but it's nice and buttery. And one thing that was a big deal to me is that it didn't go all over the place when you took a bite. The waffle fries were good, they had some kind of seasoning which was nice. The only thing that I was a little shocked by was my friend ordered a different chicken sandwich with extra sauce on the side. It came in a mini ramekin and they charged 2$ extra for it I mean it's a brunch spot in Burlington, it's going to be a little pricey, but I think for a fun weekend brunch it's great. Give it a try!

Yelp
Popular spot so I suggest getting reservations. We've been to another friendly toast location and they are all super good. They all have high standards and we've never been disappointed. The actual spot is so cute and there's so many things to look at. Yummy place!!

Yelp
Had such a great experience here! We made a reservation ahead of time and when we showed up our table was ready outside with a high chair for our baby. The service was excellent, from the host to our waitress. The place is cute, right off of Church st with a nice little outdoor patio. The food was great. Had a burger and chicken & waffles and it was all very good and came out quickly. Going out to eat with a baby can be stressful, but this was the best experience that we've had.

Yelp
Who doesn't like a good brunch on a vacation!? Absolutely love this place. The host was very nice, informed the waiting time (20min) and let us waited inside by the bar. It's very popular at the area. The decoration gives modern contemporary art look. Very vibrant and colorful. I got egg Benedict with tater tots. Great poached eggs, runny as how I want it. Tater tots are huge (I'm not sure this is a VT thing). Bathroom is clean. Staff were very friendly. Enough space between tables. Definitely recommend if you are in the town.

Yelp
We picked the Friendly Toast for Sunday brunch during our trip. Upon arriving at the restaurant around 9:30 am, it was super full, including the bar. We joined their waiting list that had live update for the wait time. While we waited, I looked at the restaurant. It was so colorful, with its red/green colors, gaming themed arts, paintings, decors and sparkling cushion seats. We got our table after about 25 minutes of waiting. I ordered the bulgogi steak and cheese sandwich, alongside side of two eggs. It was a delicious sandwich filled with complimentary ingredients like slaw and aioli. The eggs were cooked perfectly as requested. We also got the cookie monster pancakes. It came with a bottle of maple syrup, that was so cool. The pancakes were fluffy and sweet. The mango lemonade was a good drink as well. Overall the brunch was amazing. The staff were friendly. They forgot to bring couple of our drinks until we reminded the waitress. The food came out within a decent time. I'd recommend this place to anyone visiting Burlington and also suggest join the waitlist online while you start heading towards the restaurant.

Yelp
Service from Shannon and Christina was friendly and fantastic! The new Cubano Benny was one of the best breakfasts I think I've ever had!
google avatar

Gary M.

Yelp
The food was mediocre and the service matched the food. I guess if you are hung over or are not in a hurry its an ok place. Otherwise find a better place to go.
google avatar

Ansley W.

Yelp
Celiac and GF people- this place is terrific! So many GF options and the servers are very knowledgeable regarding allergens. I also love when restaurants mark allergies (see pancakes in photos). The mocktails were also delicious.

Yelp
Having frequented other Friendly Toast locations when I lived in Boston, I was psyched to discover they had opened in Burlington on our recent trip. We stopped by for breakfast before hitting the road to drive home and had a delicious and efficient breakfast with attentive staff. The highlight for us was definitely the Churro French Toast Sticks --- just superb with crispy exterior, soft inside, tons of cinnamon flavor, and delicious sauces (cheesecake drizzle, strawberry jam) that we absolutely devoured. I ordered the Medley Crue, a veggie packed hash with an avocado cilantro sauce that kicked everything up a notch and felt like a healthier balance to our indulgent french toast sticks. Hubs ordered a savory entree off of their specials menu and was happy with his choice as well. The Friendly Toast will forever be a brunch spot I make sure to enjoy whenever I'm in New England!

Yelp
Food was amazing it tasted so good. The portions were really big and the food had so much flavor. The service was also great our waiter was super sweet.

Yelp
Time from ordering to food hits table is quick ~20 minutes. Restaurant is usually busy, wait staff are always very nice. Very cozy vibe with older music that makes it feel very 80s. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the food has fallen more towards average lately but it's still always so good never falls to unappetizing.
google avatar

Yelp
We went after going to visit a college in town. The service was great and food was fast and friendly. My teen liked the retro atmosphere everyone enjoyed the food!
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
With a name like this and two smiling toast in the logo you better have friendly service; they absolutely do! The hosts were nicer than most I have encountered. We ordered a waffle and a classic eggs breakfast. They offer a great cocktail selection too. The food arrived fast! Overall tasty but the potatoes were way too seasoned for my liking. The marble rye was Texas toast sized! The decor and merch were quiet fun!
google avatar

Victoria R.

Yelp
Love this place! The chilaquiles are so delicious ! When I came here I also got the Bloody Mary flight. Wait time was moderate when I came about 15 min wait. I am from out of town and this was my favorite place while here. Cant wait to come back. I love the decor here it is so fun and funky!
google avatar

Steve L.

Yelp
Great vibe! Great location! Great service! Great food! What a fun and creative menu and decor! Absolutely love this place and I will have to come back as many times as it takes to try every single thing on the menu!!

Yelp
I want to give this place a 5 so bad but their only fault is their home fries were soggy and not crispy. We started with the breakfast egg rolls which were amazing and d I would buy that aioli bottled. I did the American breakfast turned into a sandwich. The sourdough was so good as was the eggs. I got the bacon which was thick and well done. My husband got the pumpkin cinnamon roll pancakes that melted in your mouth and came with its own bottle of syrup. The inside is so eclectic and Beetlejuice was on the big screen. We sat at the bar and both bartenders were very attentive. This place is a must try but if you mind the bar there will be a wait.

Yelp
AMAZING FOOD!!!! The place is so cute- love the colors all over. Everyone there is so friendly and pleasant. The toasted strudel is SO GOOD! Our family split an order and it was a perfect appetizer. The drinks were so unique and delicious- I got a mimosa flight and loved it.

Yelp
As a big fan of The Friendly Toast in my hometown of Portland, it should be no surprise to anyone that I also love Burlington's version of this brunch restaurant. The Friendly Toast has it all: pancakes, benedicts, omelettes, scrambles, sides, cocktails, and more. I had a chocolate chip pancake the size of my face that came with a mini glass pitcher of maple syrup, two fried eggs (slightly undercooked), a hot cocoa, a side of veggie sausage, and a side of avocado. Service is friendly; the inside is a quirky homage to American culture over the decades. Great spot for brunch!!

Yelp
Great cozy spot, with a lot of shareable breakfast choices. I went the savory breakfast egg-rolls: tasty but it's not a substitute for a main breakfast choice, it's certainly a breakfast appetizer. Pancake was no-frills and very good, it's the perfect companion to the coffee here. Service is excellent! With non-stop coffee refills, and making sure you're good. Alessandra was awesome and had perfect timing with checking in with me. This doesn't take away from the taste of the food; But, I like my food hot from the kitchen and it was brought to my table warm...which means my food was cold quick...again just my personal quirk. It's definitely worth a second visit, and it's worth your time and effort. ****Flight Attendant approved**** ****

Yelp
The food is fantastic, and the menu is fun to read. We found the service to be slow, though friendly. Also, we ate outside in part because the music was too loud inside. Unfortunately, there was intermittent construction noise that made the outdoor seating less hospitable (not their fault, I know, just something to be aware of). Again, we loved the food and the servers were friendly and laid back. A nice spot to settle in and spend time with friends.

Yelp
Checked out this breakfast and brunch place in Burlington. It was kind of busy that morning, but not too crowded inside. The Friendly Toast is kind of like a diner, but hipster though. Has a lot of breakfast classics. You can find a few of these that can be made for vegans and those wanting to eat healthier. At the counter there were a few seats available. It's kind of like a diner with the stools at the counter, and tables in the dining room. The place is only open in the mornings and afternoons, so don't wait too long to go there. Has a lot of plant based choices. It's $16 for the Vegan Scramble. Basically it's like a typical breakfast scramble just plant based. This has an avocado cilantro sauce, vegan cheese, and vegan sausage. Comes with a choice of bread. The best choice to get is toast. Great options for anyone at breakfast. It's also pretty good at lunch. There's plenty of choices for vegans and vegetarians.

Yelp
So, my wife and I came here yesterday I ordered the French toast coated breakfast tacos after having a brief conversation with our server about my allergy and she spoke with the kitchen and they had no.problem making the French toast wash gf. With that said, we went back today and upon requesting the same thing, the server said no problem and walked away. At that time she asked another e.oyee who said it wasn't not.possible unless.someone made a big "stink" about it. After some time our food came out and the manager who made that comment brought our fold over and dropped it off saying "breakfast tacos prepared gf". I immediately noticed that there was no French toast wash and no one ever mentioned they "couldn't" do it.

Yelp
The food here is awesome. Service is very attentive and pleasant. This place definitely gives off eclectic vibes with exceptional service. Perfect for a quick bite or a meal with friends (and kids!) lasting for a couple hours.
google avatar

Yelp
Came for a 20th BD party for my kid and 9 friends! They were so accommodating and even got us all at the same table! Thanks for a super awesome college memory!! Food here is always fantastic! The toasted strudel with candles was a hit!
google avatar

Lauren F.

Yelp
Always love it here! Such a unique and eclectic breakfast / brunch spot!! This time specifically needed some work on customer service... very much took away from the meal and ruined the mood the moment we sat down. Very disappointing, especially after an hour and a half wait.
google avatar

Melanie O.

Yelp
Love this place for their ambiance and food. I would recommend the chicken and waffles and would not recommend the ramen
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Sat at the bar and ate breakfast. Great service delicious food. Will definitely visit this place again
google avatar

Shannon G.

Yelp
Love this place! Great atmosphere, staff, and food. They're always updating their specials that usually have a portion of the proceeds donated to a local charity.
google avatar

Kelly J.

Yelp
The service was friendly and it's a fun atmosphere. The food is good. No complaints, but nothing exciting.
google avatar

Megan K.

Yelp
Really cool spot for an unforgettable breakfast! The menu is vast but everything I have ordered has been incredible from their eggs Benedict to their pancakes with lemon/ blueberry. The staff were friendly and the restaurant has cool eclectic vibes. Anytime I'm in the New England area, I look for a friendly toast.
google avatar

Gaz H.

Yelp
Kitchen has culinary sensibilities reflected in the creative menu. Nice peeps get the breakfasting done and complement the kitchen's output. Recommend.
google avatar

Kourtney A.

Yelp
This place is super cute! Visiting Burlington and stopped here for breakfast. The staff are super nice, and the decor is so cute! The food was okay, but I also wasn't super hungry, but the people I was with liked their meals. I'd try again if I came back.
google avatar

Brian H.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful! Great food & ambiance. Delicious and tasty cold brew maple bourbon drinks! Shannon F. Was our waitress & was superb with service & kindness!
google avatar

Yelp
The pancakes my daughter had are the star of this show - Cookie Monster Oreo with Oreo freaking butter on top, fire! My Benedict was good eggs cooked perfectly, so they oozed upon cutting. Nice iced tea, a table nearby got the mimosa flight it looked awesome. Husband very happy with the option of vegan sausage. Join the wait on Yelp and got right in.

Susan W.

Yelp
Fantastic food and friendly staff! Very easy to join the waitlist which is helpful because it's always busy! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Well, we had a great breakfast. It definitely lived up to its reputation. The food was awesome. They make their own bread. Service was excellent. We sat outside. It was very nice. Great non corporate experience for travelers on vacation.

Yelp
I love this place so much. Me and my husband first discovered this restaurant in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. I love the funky and eclectic vibe. And the food is delicious. I give this place a highly enthusiastic 2 thumbs up. I look forward to my next visit.

Yelp
I am a local I had someone who was sick whose nausea is relieved by Pepsi products. I do not have a car. I called to see if they carried Pepsi products. The person said we don't sell bottles but that I could by a glass of Pepsi to go. I walked over and ordered a Large Pepsi. I was not told there was only one size and was made to pay $4.44 for the order. The girl brought over a very small cup. I said I ordered a large-she said we only have on size. I explained the situation and asked do you provide free refills ? She said yes but from the same glass. I explained it was for someone sick and would appreciate a second small cup to take home to the sick person. She said it would be another $4.44-I said that is ridiculous to charge me $9- she went to the back to get permission and came back and said sorry it is our policy per management. WOW, not friendly ,not humans. A fountain drink typically cost the seller between 10-3- cents. I informed them that this anecdote/story would not sit well with my fellow and local tenants at 77 Residence and The Nest. Simply UNBELIEVABLE-don't spend your hard earned money there-they don't care about you.
google avatar

Kristin T.

Yelp
Eclectic finds, sparkly seat cushions and polkadotted tables, loved the vibe and the friendly staff. Food was tasty and filling. Pancakes were light and fluffy, hashbrown cups were crispy, poached eggs oozed golden goodness. The avocado toast unfortunately lacked flavor and the coffee could have been hotter and more free flowing. Overall a positive experience, leaving with full bellies ready to conquer the bike trail.

Yelp
Sklarmageddon Omelet. The omelet was delicious and I had the habanero cheese toast . I love the spicy and the kick to it . It was delicious . The omelet was delicious and fluffy and a great portion . The potatoes were erasing to perfection . Everything was delicious

Heather D.

Yelp
Food is still amazing, just really disappointed with their new menu. All our favorite items are gone.

Christa L.

Yelp
Greeted by Cristina who was also our server. Great warm welcome and service . Place is quirky and perfect. Very clean and menu is filled with many yummy surprises . I love avocado toast and this one was by far best i have ever eaten . Great experience from beginning to end . My husband had the monster breakfast and loved the French toast .

Yelp
Amazing experience!! The name does this establishment justice. I received friendly energy the moment I stepped in until the moment I left. The service was impeccable! I sat with the bartenders Henry and Julia I believe their names were. They were so nice and personable! And the mimosa flight was delicious!!! Now to the food or better yet the Toast! KUDOS to the chef! that was the best omelet I've ever tasted the Sklarmegeddon Omelet was "off the chain". It was served hot and fresh and the omelet held the fluffiest texture!! Oo and the chipotle maple sour cream affixed on top was exquisite. I thoroughly enjoyed myself! From the ambiance of the restaurant with its lively colors and hip menu text, to the tasty food and drinks this is a MUST VISIT brunch location in Burlington!!!

Marianne W.

Yelp
The Friendly Toast is a favorite because breakfast and brunch are my favorite meals of the day! It's my opinion they know how to make their customers happy and leaving the restaurant satisfied. It's too bad I won't be heading this way any time soon. This is a favorite dining spot if you are visiting the University of Vermont campus. I'm definitely recommending.

Linda F.

Yelp
This place is amazing. We absolutely love their food and their drink menus. It's a very unique place. Definitely a must while vacationing or anytime. The memorabilia is interesting and well placed. Very clean, very friendly and welcoming staff. The quality of food is outstanding. We very highly recommend The Friendly Toast!

Yelp
What a fun cute and quirky breakfast spot in downtown Burlington! I was in town for work and luckily we had some time to kill to check out this restaurant. I loved how kitschy and fun the decor was! The menu matched the fun decor... there were lots of interesting options and they serve brunch all day! I had the nitro cold brew to drink (delish) and the huevos rancheros to eat. I loved the huevos ranchero, especially the crispy tortilla and the breakfast potatoes on the bottom. It all came together for a yummy and cohesive dish. Our server was so lovely and was able to get us separate checks. If I was in Burlington again, I would definitely come back for brunch!

Sheila C.

Yelp
Very good - a lot of brunch options and traditional breakfast. We stopped before our Lake cruise.
