New England Restaurants Offering Government Shutdown Meal Deals | Eater Boston

"I found that at all Friendly Toast locations federal and government workers and a guest can get free entrees through the end of the shutdown (proof of employment or valid ID required); the complimentary meal includes two entrees from the current menu or weekly specials and a soft drink, and is valid at breakfast, lunch, and dinner (appetizers and alcohol excluded)." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Google
We put ourselves on their waitlist since there were no reservations available. The app kept us informed about where we were in line and our table was ready as soon as we got there. Cute restaurant with lots of fun, funky decor. The food was delicious and they have a great selection of gluten free items. The server was very friendly. My food came out separate from the others, and was labeled ‘Allergy’. So I was appreciative of the fact that they seem to take allergies seriously! I would definitely recommend!

Google
What a great concept, breakfast with a twist. From the cinnamon buns with bacon to the breakfast egg rolls. The food was delicious and the drinks were excellent. The boozy ice coffee flight was incredible. The atmosphere was interesting to say the least. Very colorful and plenty of cool memorabilia to see. There are over 10 locations. Can't wait to try the lunch and to visit other locations. Me and my family highly recommend this great establishment. Great job to the staff also...... excellent service.

Google
Nice place with great decor and better food. The coffee flights are highly encouraged. Surprisingly their bulgogi rice bowl was very flavorful. We also had their pancakes and breakfast tacos. Everything we tried was delicious.

Google
Delicious food. Very expensive menu. If you want breakfast, lunch, brunch or anything in between. This is a great place to go. It is however very busy at times so make sure that you are okay with waiting a little bit. Overall. I really do enjoy this restaurant and have been many times. Thank you for the great service and I love the decor of the restaurant!

Google
What a fun place!!! First time visiting!! Love the decor!!! Food was delicious!! Great beverage selection!!! We were in at breakfast and this was a great start to the day!! We had the Classic Breakfast. Both of our egg orders were cooked perfectly!! Our server Emma was awesome!!! So friendly!!! She made sure we had everything we needed!!!!

The special date based food experiments are a fresh idea. I tried the bear omelette based on a TV show. Jill got a pumpkin breakfast. It is a little noisy in the space, but that is because so many good things are happening here!

Google
Love Love love! Such a cool place with such a great menu. You walk into a place that is full of Pop art. So different , funky but cool and clean and pretty awesome . And then you get the menu! Original but with a twist on all the meals. We were on vacation here and the food and drinks were so delicious and awesome we came twice in two days! Lucky for the people that live near by. Service is perfect as well.

Google
I have food allergies and they accommodated beautifully without cross contamination. I have egg and dairy allergies so breakfast is very difficult for me when traveling. We found this restaurant and decided to give it a try. I’m so glad we did. I had the breakfast special with vegan pancakes, tofu scramble, breakfast potato’s and bacon. Delicious! I highly recommend.

Yelp
It's been a while since I've gone to the Burlington, MA Toast! I'm so spoiled by living near the Nashua, NH location! Stopped in at Burlington in between medical appointments and a great, quick, delicious brunch. My husband scarfed down his Rice, Rice Baby entree (Rice, black beans, fire roasted poblano corn, grilled chicken, pico de gallo, avocado crema, pickled onion, cotija, sliced avocado, Nacho Cheese Doritos® & cilantro.) It looked really good; I'm going to have to ask if they'd make a vegetarian version. The husband wondered if it could be made into a burrito. I experienced the delectable Cookie Monster Pancakes (Oreo® cookie infused pancakes stuffed with chocolate cream - topped with Oreo® cookie butter & powdered sugar.) I ate half and brought the other half home. Washed it down with some quality Peet's iced coffee. Staff was courteous and dependable. It was a little loud, as are most Toasts, because of music and chatter. Entrance is handicapped accessible, though a push-button automated door would be excellent. Staff held the door for me when I entered and exited with my mobility aid.

Yelp
I absolutely love coming here. My favorite is the breakfast combo with pancakes, eggs, and bacon. The service is amazing and it's a great spot for a Saturday morning breakfast! The atmosphere is great too. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
We had a good time at friendly toast for Mother's Day! The staff was very thoughtful and timely with seating, taking our orders, and answering our requests. The food was good! We didn't order as much food as we normally do during lunch. We ended up splitting a Korean fried chicken sandwich, house salad and fries. I also ordered a spicy mango margarita which was delicious! The chicken burger was five stars. I highly recommend it. The burger bun was brioche style and the chicken was fried to crispy perfection. The only thing I'll say and why I took a star off is because there is always a long wait time to get seated at the friendly toast. I know when we came it was a holiday but I have found that there is always a long wait time here. I don't know if it is because the restaurant doesn't have a lot of seating, but waiting an hour to be seated consistently here is frustrating for customers. It worked this time around because we had errands in the mall but that is not always the case. I hope they can work on bringing the wait time down on normal days.

Yelp
I'd never been to this location, but had been to The Friendly Toast before and it's always fine. I was a bit wary of this spot as it's in the mall but what a nice experience we had! The decor is super fun and there are a million things to look at (our baby thoroughly enjoyed). The service was prompt and kind. We'd ordered a side egg and avocado for the baby, but our server was even so sweet as to give us a few strawberries for her free of charge. Much appreciated. My husband and I had an omelette and eggs benedict - both delicious. The coffee was good as well and they kept it flowing. Would definitely come back if I was in the area!

Yelp
This place is absolutely delicious! I love the decor and service was amazing. I think it's pretty on par with what you'd pay at any of the restaurants in the mall, but it's a little pricey. I think it was worth it though! The Snap, Crackle, Cluck was juicy and flavorful, and definitely ask for their hot sauce. It was actually spicy and their house made tumeric sauce. And my fiance loved the pastrami sandwich (it was a special), but personally I found it extremely salty, I was happy with my choice. The espresso flight was cute, but next time I'd just get a regular espresso martini

Yelp
Love coming to Friendly Toast everytime I visit Boston! The portion is huge and so tasty like homemade meal. Love the vibe inside, so cozy and so cute! There is usually a wait on the weekend, but the mall is next to the restaurant so we spend sometimes while waiting for the table. Food is amazing!! Staffs are fast and so friendly, will come back here for sure!

Yelp
I've been here often. Today, a group of retired teachers met for brunch. Our server, Audrey, was attentive and welcoming. We shared loaded tots, which were tasty and made a nice breakfast appetizer. I ordered breakfast egg rolls and I loved the garlicky aioli. We shared a side of French toast--very tasty but a little too nutmeg-forward for me. Everyone else had some version of eggs. I'd love to see them add some more elevated hot beverages: cappuccino, tea lattes, etc. Good luck at Boston University, Audrey!

Yelp
We are so glad that we made reservations for The Friendly Toast because the wait otherwise would've been over an hour! We made our reservation on Yelp the night before and were sat a few minutes after we arrived. We always come here after Black Friday shopping and every year we are happy! Our waitress was awesome and wore the funniest Danny Devito graphic t shirt. It was iconic. The food came out so fast and we were in and out (which after getting up at 4:30 am, I was not mad about!). The food was probably the least memorable unfortunately. It was good, don't get me wrong, but nothing special. The breakfast burrito was kind of bland and I wish there was more cheese! The potatoes could've been crispier. But my aunt liked the omelet and said it was very good. And the eggs Benedict was fine too! The tots were the best for sure, but again, could've used more flavor! The restaurant was crowded as usual and the vibes were good--very high energy! Plus the Christmas decorations were so cute. All in all, you can't go wrong going here and I'd say the prices are worth it as well. We'll be back next year!
google avatar

Cindy L.

Yelp
This place is so cute, vintage decoration with alot to look at. I got the rainbow sherbet mocktail which was absolutely fantastic and the eggs Benedict was good too, I just would've liked a little more buttery-ness to the hollandaise personally. Very great service and would like to come back soon cuz there were so many fun menu options.

Rose A.

Yelp
The hostess at the friendly toast has no concept of table organization and let my elderly mother stand there waiting for 20 minutes to clear off a table for us. They messed up my husband's phone number upon check-in, making our wait even longer. It doesn't look like there is enough wait staff today, as food was piling up and getting cold in the kitchen, likely contributing to our longer wait time. These problems could easily be resolved by scheduling a more adequate number of wait-staff during high-customer volume times (breakfast/brunch) and hiring or promoting someone who is better organized and less-frazzled to work the front desk.
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
Outstanding decor, clean bathroom. Super service people! I don't love the menu, it's hard to read, not as many choices as there could be. But decent vegan options. The coffee is excellent, the toast is very good, the potatoes are very good, and the omelette was very good. If I'm being picky, the broccoli was unevenly cooked. Solid four stars.
google avatar

Anyan D.

Yelp
The waiter are friendly, wait time can be long. It's best to have a reservation, especially on the weekends. Coffee tastes burnt, French toast was soggy, thankfully we were able to replace it with slightly burnt pancakes. Eggs tasted fake. Everything tasted reheated. The aesthetics were nice, but I wouldn't revisit and it's definitely not worth waiting over an hour for. Great homemade hot sauce though. Ask for water, since they do not automatically bring it to you, and when you do they only bring it for one person

Michalia H.

Yelp
The food was good. I had the street tacos and the flavors were good. The service once at the table was fast. The ambiance is corky. The wait time was the biggest downfall. We were told 25 minutes for a party of two and ended up downloading the yelp app to track our time. The real estimated wait was 60-70 minutes and that was correct in the end. We went into the mall and hit some shops and kept an eye on where we were at in line, but I'd definitely use the wait list tracking to realistically know when you'll be seated

Erika S.

Yelp
I have been to the Burlington and the Back Bay locations and they both have amazing. Would definitely recommend. This is always our go to place for good food, good service and a large enough menu that even s

Yelp
Delicious!!!! My husband and I both shared the eggs benny and fruit waffle! Both exceptional! Egg was poached to perfection! Service was friendly and attentive, good runner was all smiles and a joy! Cute decor and friendly environment!

Yelp
First time trying the friendly toast. It was the coolest place I've been in, I think it partly because the entire time they were blasting some good punk rock classics. The food was very good as well as their specialty coffee drinks. The inside of the restaurant was very colorful and fun. Would go back.

Carrie H.

Yelp
I have been here 3 times and every time just not good food is not good. service was good the ambiance was good. it's the food I had waffle just ok hamburges had old tomatoes and was dry nothing on it. Eggs I want well they came runny. I do not suggest this place if you want normal food you have a crazy craving for crazy style than come here.
google avatar

Kevin I.

Yelp
Busy brunch spot for a reason! We had to wait a bit longer than I would have liked, however considering the sheer volume of people there I can understand. Our food turned out great, I loved my dish and the restaurant itself had this classic feeling that was brought to the modern day. Overall, the food tasted fantastic and the ambiance of the restaurant as well as the friendliness of the staff really helped with me knowing I will want to return here next time I'm in Salem!
google avatar

Mikki J.

Yelp
We had good service, friendly staff, a nice variety of options for those with gluten allergies or vegetarian preferences. Had a fabulous time and great breakfast.
google avatar

Candee N.

Yelp
My family went to the friendly toast location in Nashua and Burlington. We had great experiences at both places. Love the vibe and the service was amazing and fast. The one in Burlington was a bit more crowded and smaller. Other than that food was excellent, highly recommend.
google avatar

Gregg L.

Yelp
One of the best breakfast options in Burlington Massachusetts. Join the waitlist on Yelp to save time. Always order the pancake monster and swap out waffle fries for home fries.

D F.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the atmosphere and food here. Interesting breakfast selections and fun decor to look at while you wait. The food is really good! The waitstaff is great. Very friendly and on top of things.

Jane E.

Yelp
Everything great food & prompt service . I had eggs Benedict it was delicious, served hot. I would highly recommend this restaurant!!!!
google avatar

Jacquie L.

Yelp
This is such a fun spot. The decor is fun and bright diner kitsch. The server was friendly and attentive making sure to stop by a few times to check on us and provide refills . There were two of us and we ordered one of each appetizer to have a good mix of savory and sweet ; everything was delicious but the winner was the tots with their sriracha glaze . Will definitely visit again.
google avatar

Diana K.

Yelp
Meh. You wait forever for barely average food. Seating is very tight. You feel like you are seated communally with strangers.
google avatar

Leanna S.

Yelp
A good breakfast place with children during the weekend. The food was fantastic. I tried very interesting flight of mimosas. They had almond milk as well. The only downside was the long wait and the loudness of the environment. We will be back with friends.

Joe M.

Yelp
I really like this place but they keep changing the chicken and waffles and I don't even want to get it anymore. The original chicken and waffles with the hot sour cream drizzle or maple sour cream and hot syrup was awesome. Now it's all different. I like the breakfast egg rolls and jumbo tots. But the chicken and waffles was where it was at
google avatar

Lindsey R.

Yelp
Always bomb, wait time is crazy BUT you can jump in line online and it's the best invention ever
google avatar

A F.

Yelp
Amazing food. Poached eggs done to perfection, French toast toast plate was great and the pancakes were thick like a cake with great taste. The little cute bottles of syrup tasted good and the ambiance was fun with families and a good place for the younger ones as it had fun pictures and decorations from 50s through 90s.diner style chairs and tables. Servers were on top of everything with the guests .

Yelp
Do I understand the hype of Friendly Toast? No..not really...but is it a solid breakfast/brunch place? Yup! The food is good, the waitstaff is friendly (no pun intended), and it has a charming vibe--solid four stars. See below for a detailed review: ---------------------- Ambiance: A Customer Service: A Food: B Price: B Ambiance/Cleanliness It has a very funky retro vibe without feeling like you are in a theme park. It is quite loud (both auditory and visually). As someone with ADHD, I did find it a bit much at first, but I did settle in pretty quickly. I would just advise caution to anyone who is neurodivergent and perhaps going at a less busy time so that all your senses are assaulted. But it truly was a funny vibe, and I wouldn't necessarily change anything. Customer Service I have always found the staff incredibly friendly, though how attentive they are depends on the time of day. I have been here both when it's busy and slow, and during busy times, we do end up doing a lot of waiting for things like drink refills. I was tempted to say they could use more wait staff, but the truth is, the restaurant is so small that more staff would likely just be in the way. I will say that while our wait staff sometimes takes an extended time to check in on us or return with something we've asked for, it has never been an obnoxiously long wait. Just be aware that this might not be a quick dining experience if you are in a hurry. Food I think tastewise, there are much better breakfast places around...but do they have a full bar? I think you go to a place like this for the experience, not necessarily the food. The food is good. It's just not great. It's above something like IHOP but still pretty standard fare breakfast and brunch items. Somewhat forgettable food, but ultimately satisfying. Price They are pricey, but not unreasonably so. You won't break the bank here, and they do have pretty big sizes, so if you are only a budget, you could 100% find something to split. The drinks are also pretty reasonably priced, which is always nice. Overall I've been here several times and will likely keep coming back. They are a nice breakfast/brunch place, especially if you like having some drinks with your meal.

Yelp
What an interesting experience. The management of the wait list is just short of brilliant, my way of telling you, expect a wait. The waitress was fantastic, her name was Kaitlyn, I believe. Drink orders came quickly. We ordered an appetizer and then things got screwy. After waiting almost 30 minutes for the appetizer, I asked the waitress and she came back and told me the kitchen made an error. Assistant manager came over and apologized. She comped us the appetizer. The food was good, quite solid for breakfast. The portions are large. The room is small and the tables are close together so if you are looking for quiet ambiance, this is not your place If you are near the Mall I'd recommend coming here. Good food and solid people.
google avatar

Stephani W.

Yelp
Very sad experience. Friendly toast is busy and I don't think my review will matter but I hope management can see this and maybe address it with his host. I walked in as a party of 2, she told me there's a wait, no problem we can wait. A party of 3 came after us and was seated immediately. I'm confused and decided to ask why were they seated before us. She said because booth is for big parties. I pointed out multiple booths that have parties of 2. I am still clueless as why we were treated that way.
google avatar

Sere B.

Yelp
the food was good and the servers were nice. we went on a Sunday morning for brunch and it was def busy and a bit loud. would def go back. Ambient decor is very peculiar, we liked it.
google avatar

Makani S.

Yelp
This place gets packed fast so be sure to reserve a table or join the waitlist in advance. Cool and colorful atmosphere with lots of fun menu items and many gluten-free options. The waiter was attentive and food came out in 15min. I ordered the avocado toast for $9, flavorful but pretty small for the price. The eggs bennies looked more appetizing and with bigger portions, I will probably order it next time!
google avatar

King B.

Yelp
Seated within 2 minutes and i had Amanda as a server who was training. Amanda was pleasant and accommodating, she did a good job. The food was pretty good but the breakfast burrito had a few too many bites of just tortilla. My Irish bendict was good but the home fries were kind of burnt yet somehow soggy moreso than fried/crunchy. Its pretty much 20$ for a breakfast plate here which i find rather expensive for breakfast and portions. The coffee was good and the decor was fun to gaze over but honestly my dollar goes a lot further for equal if not better food at other breakfast joints. I appreciate the service but 2 people's breakfast shouldnt be 60$!
google avatar

Alisha S.

Yelp
The service is great! The food tasted amazing. Once seated everything came out quicker than expected for somewhere that is so busy. It's also very cute and comfy. Definitely recommend just make sure you put yourself down on their waitlist because they are busy.

Jordan M.

Yelp
Good food, fun ambience, good service! Can be kinda pricey. Wait times can be kinda long.

Yelp
I normally wouldn't give a restaurant 1star. I've been to this location before with not issues. I will not come back with kids. We had a party of 4 adults and. 3 year old and a 5 month old. So we needed a table of 4 with 1 high chair. We arrived at 9:30 Saturday morning. No wait. That had not turned on the wait list at that time. In the 30 minutes we waited they say several parties of 4 and a party of 5. I questioned why we were still not seated. I young hostess said they only have a couple seated that accompanied a high chair. A both that seated 6 opened up and they were about to seat a large party. I nicely said we will take it. We don't need the high chair. We ate and when the check came I noticed they added a 20% gratuity. That pissed me off. I paid it but will not come back to this location. FYI- in the past they would put 2 tables together. None of the teenagers at check in were helpful.
google avatar

Ames K.

Yelp
Great food and friendly staff. Also great location. This will definitely be our go to place whenever we visit the Burlington Mall.
google avatar

Rosie Q.

Yelp
Friendly Toast is a breakfast chain with a retro diner look. I've been here several times. It's extremely busy at this location. They serve breakfast all day and have lunch options as well. And they have a bar for drinks. The price is on the higher side. This is located at a mall so depending on the day or how busy it is at the mall, parking can be packed. There was a time when we had to wait out in the cold for close to an hour because they do not have a waiting area. The mall was not open at the time. Normally I don't mind if everything was superb. Irish Benny- Two English muffins with corned beef hash, two poached eggs, and hollandaise served with home fries. I like the house corned beef. Everything else was okay. Churro Bites- Bite-size fried doughnut tossed in cinnamon & sugar, topped with a creamy cheesecake glaze and chocolate drizzle served with strawberry habanero jam. Kind of too dense and greasy for our liking. It was hard to get through this plate. Highway Strawberry- Two slices of french toast topped with cheesecake glaze, chocolate drizzle, strawberries, and powdered sugar. This was pretty good. Overall Service: Depending on how busy they are, the hostess can be a mixed bag. The servers were more consistent. They were upbeat and attentive.

Yelp
Food 5*, service 5*, prices yikes!!! Couple of seniors, after lahey appointments, stopped by da'Mall...OMG, sugar overload! Call Dr. PEPPER LOL. ONCE in a while stop. 2nd mortgage not worth it. ( Hello bickfords)
google avatar

Stacy L.

Yelp
Verrrrrrry mediocre. Eggs bene and one blueberry pancake. Hollandaise was wicked bland, eggs poached nicely, ham lacked flavor and seemed like it had been frozen a few times, english muffin dense, dry and flavorless. Potatoes were ok, homemade hot sauce was fun. Pancake was overcooked and tough/dry. Service was good. Not worth the calories or money.
google avatar

Yelp
This is our go to place to spot stop for breakfast when we are in an area with one. The options of different and unique food options is vast. My wife really enjoys the Korean breakfast bowl. I think the chicken and waffles are delicious. Make sure to order a Bloody Mary flight.

Shawnna C.

Yelp
Kendra our server was amazing! Went above and beyond! Food was hot, fresh and delicious! Would definitely recommend!

Stacey M.

Yelp
We went here for my sister's birthday. We got the mimosa flight, which was beautiful and tasty ( except for the mojito mimosa- not my fave.) Both of us got well done hash and eggs. Everything was just delicious. All this for $60 plus tip- pretty good!

Isabella V.

Yelp
Just because a chicken sandwich is crispy it doesn't mean it's going to taste good. Needed a lot of seasoning. Had no flavor. Also
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
I thought this place was only okay. Our group tried all of the flights, because that's the only reason we came to this place. I had the Bloody Mary one, only the dill flavor was good. The original left such a strange taste in my mouth. For food I had the breakfast sandwich on a donut, very yummy, but was looking forward to the strawberry dipping sauce and it came with something else. As far as service - food came out fast! But as soon as you're done your told about some kind of time limit, so we had to leave as soon as we paid. If you like places for your Instagram feed, this is it! If you're looking for a relaxing Sunday brunch, this isn't the spot.

Kathleen S.

Yelp
Visited Tuesday morning at roughly 8:30AM. Place was 40% full so I asked host if we as a party of two could have a four top booth (many were available). Host was frustrated we asked but reluctantly gave us one. Food was very average with potatoes being oversalted. Coffee was hot and eggs were solid. Food server was pleasant but nothing stood out. Ambiance was bright diner style with an interesting array of light fixtures. Cute.

Yelp
Fun, friendly atmosphere, and a great menu with lots of variety. Even when it's busy there, I never feel like the staff is rushing us.
