Where to Eat and Drink in Salida and Buena Vista - Eater Denver

"Brussels sprouts, truffle fries, and smoked trout are among the menu items at laid-back gastropub The Fritz. When stopping in Salida for one night, it’s the best dinner option." - Josie Sexton

Our first visit back to the Fritz since it reopened with the new menu! We lucked out and got a table right before the wait list started. Ordered the warmed olives, whipped feta with grilled pita, salad with ahi tuna, & the chicken& waffles. My favorite bites were the whipped feta & chicken/waffles! Delicious. I spied a tart on the table next to me I want to try next. Beautiful dishes, great & speedy service. Will be back!

I am in Salida for a vacation with my family during summer. The Fritz was our choice of restaurant after a walk in downtown. The location is great with a clean park right next to it. We were so surprised with how good the food was because of the fusion between the States and the World. We had a chance to meet Chef Eric and he is so lovable. Always smiling with a happy energy!! Can’t wait to go back 😁

Google
wow Wow WOW! The Fritz has definitely hit the spot for a place to dine! Every dish was better than perfection, I’m unable to express the delicacy here. My favorite was the Oklahoma Smash Burger(BEST BURGER EVER HANDS DOWN) and the Mac n Cheese(tasty blend of 4 cheeses)!!! I will definitely come back for more. ps: the bartender serves great drinks

Google
This was a great place to eat! All of the food was amazing. The kitchen staff, the bartender, the owner, and waiter were all phenomenal. Best smash burger I’ve had outside of Oklahoma. Hushpuppies, truffle fries, and Mac n cheese were all awesome as well. Love the atmosphere as well. Highly recommend this establishment!!

This is a really great little bar and restaurant in downtown Salida. Fast service and great drinks and food. There burger of the day is constantly changing and is really good. You can combine little plates and big plates to give yourself a wonderful variety of interesting cuisine. Also try the ginger lemonade, it is delicious. Do not pass up the opportunity to try out this great place.

Google
Phenomenal views, food and service. Kenneth took very good care of us out of towners. We made it there at the perfect time and got a window seat with views of Riverfront Park. Mussels were in abundance and hearty! The smoked trout- so good! Elk jalapeno sausage- WOW! I highly recommend this local eatery.

If you eat at one place in Salida, make it this one. If you order drinks in Salida, order them here. If you love Mezcal, it’s the only game in town. We came on multiple nights and everything was delicious, the staff was always friendly and the cocktails are perfect. The salads are particularly tasty and the owner made us feel right at home. Seriously, we’re coming back next time we’re in Salida.

Google
How do I explain how wonderful the Fritz is? We had the pork belly and the ahi which were out of this world. We come here every time we are in town and can't say enough good things and the staff. It is an experience!!

Yelp
Had some great Aperol Spritzes and tapas at The Fritz- great location right along the park and river.

Yelp
Ordered the following: Bottle of Malbec - good French Onion Soup - Great Ahi Tuna Salad - Great Cuban Sandwich - Fair (not the best choice of Ham) Mac N Cheese - Fair ( nicely toasted, but bland) Overall, worth the visit. Nice atmosphere.

Yelp
I went here two nights in a row as I enjoyed it that much. Great menu with a ton of creative vegetarian (and non-veg!) options. My favorite was the onion tart--wow. Their cocktails are also spot on. Will def be back next time I visit town.

Yelp
Visited on a Sunday evening. We enjoyed every plate that hit our table! Such attention to detail for everything from food, service, and atmosphere. The bartender is excellent, he is very friendly and has an awesome energy! The tapas here are a must-have, all the different flavors go so well together. Such beauty throughout The Fritz!

Yelp
We had plenty of options for dining in Salida and I'm so glad my husband picked out The Fritz! The ambiance was nice: lower lighting and a friendly talkative crowd without being overly noisy. The building boasted brick walls with local art and high ceilings. We were greeted by the bartender and seated right away (despite coming at 5pm on a Saturday) and brought waters. The menu was smaller but had so many tasty options, it was tough to decide what to order. I appreciate their transparency that the menu is always changing and updating. They also bring our food as soon as it's ready, versus waiting to serve an entire table all at once, for optimal freshness. We both felt our food was flavorful, creative and tasty (veggie sandwich, Korean chicken and waffles). If we find ourselves in Salida again for dinner we will absolutely visit The Fritz.

Yelp
My friend and I stopped in here absolutely famished and we left completely satisfied. All the food really hit the spot. We decided to go family style and share everything because there were so many tempting menu items we wanted to try. The highlight was definitely the burger. It really hit the spot. The sweet potatoe fries were also delicious. The onion tart was really hyped up but we honestly thought that was just alright. The Mac and cheese was super yummy and comforting. Nice drink selection at the bar and happy they were carrying mezcal! Will definitely return when back in Salida.

Yelp
We walked in to get a some food to go and some drinks while we waited. Sat for an about 5-10 minutes watching bar tenders and manager on duty ignore us. Manager finally asks us what we wanted and was promptly told we could not take any "to go" order because the food wouldn't travel well. Isn't that my option and Opinion to decide what I want for food and now you're telling me what I can and can not order. Fine, you don't do to go, but the arrogance and rude behavior is not necessary. Don't care about food quality, would never return to this establishment.
google avatar

Yelp
Erik the owner is a uncaring and an inattentive owner who lets his staff run around like crazy and he just sits at the bar and drinks. This place is so mismanaged and so unorganized that food comes out when it's ready and one person can be on dessert and the other one is still on there appetizer. Also unable to manage inventory so if you order some thing they'll come out and say oh we don't have anymore of that and oh we don't have any more of that two times they came back to our table and said that they didn't have what we had ordered. Thank you Erik for our full meal it was well deserved that you paid for the lack of service that you provided. With attitude at that. Screaming at one of your patrons for your lack of management and in front of all your other customers is so unprofessional. We will never be back and we actually steered other people away from this establishment upon our departure.

Yelp
Excellent food. Great drinks. I guess new owners and it was all fantastic. Really enjoyed my Bucatini. Wife lived her eggplant.

Yelp
The Fritz recently reopened under new ownership which gave me reason to delete my previous and not 5 star review of the establishment. While some may be commiserating the menu change new ownership obviously drives, I applaud the owner for developing and delivering an updated menu that is diverse and delish. The cocktail menu has been crafted with care and provides some new quaffable drinks the downtown area needs. I highly recommend the whipped feta, olives and bolognese. All menu items are shareable in staying with the tapas theme. We have had an excellent experience each of the times we've dined here and given that we "fired" the restaurant after bad experiences under the previous owner, it took some convincing to return and boy are we glad we did!

Yelp
I have been here twice - once before Covid, and again this past weekend. Both times I had great meals, and the staff were great. This past visit, there were 4 of us, and we went with several appetizers accompanied by Boulevardiers. Other than the olives not wowing us, it was amazing. Our server was super nice and on top of it. As an added bonus, the music was on fire - super eclectic and there were disco lights to boot. We had a chance to meet the owner just to learn we hung in the same crowd back in the day. Next trip to Salida will most definitely include a dinner at The Fritz

Yelp
Onion tart is the bomb! Friendly staff and nice vibe. Sat at the bar and it's a cozy cute place!

Yelp
Went there for a lovely summer evening - and enjoyed their outside dining options. It sits right across from a gorgeous park, and couldn't be more beautiful. The menu was small, but varied and everything was yummy! Service was fine - nothing noteworthy either good or bad. Definitely worth coming back to!

Yelp
So glad The Fritz is back! Excellent menu with variety you don't find anywhere else in Salida. Wonderful cocktails with high end liquor selections, vintage glassware, experienced bartenders and funky mountain vibe. A must to visit!

Yelp
We came here based on a recommendation from a fellow Joyful journeys hot springs goer. This place is adorable & we've probably walked by here several times when in town but since they don't open till 4 we never visited. I love the brick walls & art in this space. We started with an old fashioned & a blood orange margarita. Both were ok. More notable was the La Fin Du Monde on tap! We also decided to get the special which was Mussels & frites. First of all the aioli on the frites & mussels, I'm pretty sure crack was in it, IT WAS INCREDIBLE!! the mussels were humongous, some were gritty & the garlic wine sauce they were floating in could've used salt. We also agreed that when there's a wine sauce bread should be mandatory. Cute place! I'm sure as long as we visit the area we'll stop by & try other specials & small plates & of course get la fin du monde on tap!

Yelp
After reading the reviews for The Fritz, I was so excited to try it! Unfortunately, I was disappointed. The service was very friendly, but the pacing was off...our food came out before we had even finished our cocktails. While my husband's burger and fries were good, I had the Calabrian Chicken and it was very disappointing. Dry chicken (how does this happen with a confit?) and goopy, under-seasoned bean stew. It was a waste of $24. Maybe it's just an issue with this one dish?

Yelp
This place is no longer in business. Not sure what happened. Was nice place, sadly this business is shuttered. Closed. Out of business.

Yelp
Excellent food @ reasonable prices, super friendly staff, fast service & a warm ambiance! I've been to Salida many times but have never been to The Fritz. Not sure why! We got the corn/potato chowder, mushroom/celery root dish, mussels w/fries & quinoa. There were only 2 of us but we wanted to try it all!! All were plentiful & delicious! Took leftovers with us for lunch the next day. Highly recommended! Not your typical bar food! Waaaay better!!

Doug H.

Yelp
We've eaten at the Fritz several times and always been impressed,so much so that it was one of the things we looked forward to on our trip. We were very disappointed. The service was mostly friendly, but deficient. Both of us have been in food service and understand sometimes you can get in the weeds. When guests at the same table get portions of their meals 10 to 20 minutes apart, you don't tell them " the food comes out when it comes out." This seems to be the standard operating procedure for the restaurant now. I noticed this at numerous tables. The quality of the food is another issue. The Korean Chicken and Waffles were a complete disappointment. The chicken strips served on a soggy, dollar pancake sized waffle fell far short of the menu description. The Fritz salad was pretty much bagged field greens with a few chunks of ahi, shaved Parmesan and pumpkin seeds. It wasn't awful. The 4 slices of grilled baguette, that came out 20 minutes before the salad were limp and overpriced in the extreme. Will we go to the Fritz again? Never say never, but doubtful with so many better choices in town.

Yelp
Everything is great about this restaurant. It's cozy atmosphere, delicious and unique food, ambience, service. Highly recommended!

Yelp
This chef is serious. I've always loved chicken and waffles, but my tastebuds have always been wrestling with the sweet and savory. The chef at The Fritz has added a special to the menu that smooths things over for the buds, and gives me a straight-up amazing mouth sensation. It's a tiny, vertical dish, with a tiny disk of a waffle, topped with fried chicken given a Korean chicken wing treatment. Crunchy, juicy. The thin waffle soaks up that rich, dark, slightly spicy sauce. It reminds me of the wings at the beloved, now-defunct Pok Pok in Portland. Wow.

Yelp
Really good. The brie & chicken sandwich is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The brie is perfectly creamy and compliments the sweet & tart flavors from the apple. The chicken is grilled wonderfully. I tried my friend's prosciutto & pear sandwich as well. I can say all of the same good things about it; the two sandwiches taste very similar. It comes down to whether you prefer prosciutto or chicken (I preferred the chicken slightly). The fries were great too. Crispy and salted to perfection. The ahi was also delicious. The freshness from the cucumber paired with the spice of the aoli for a savory flavor, while the creaminess of the ahi contrasted the crisp wanton excellently. My third friend said his burger was "top ten burgers" The service was very friendly and the wall art was very cool too. We'll definitely be coming back here.

Yelp
Unfortunately, we won't ever go back to The Fritz when we are in Salida. We were there last week and went in to sit at the bar for drinks and dinner. By the time the kind bar tender poured our first drink I could hardly stand being there because of a man sitting at the other end of the bar in front of his computer who was talking a cursing so loudly! I soon figured out that he was the OWNER!! Geeze, it was very awkward. Everyone was turning around and staring and he was completely clueless. The menu seemed much smaller than it used and the vibe was not as it used to be so we passed and left after one drink. There are many other options in wonderful Salida!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I tried the Jamaican Jerk Chicken, the Burrata and the Chicken Tikka Masala while we were in town for Pride. The food was OK but the service and owner made us feel rushed and unwelcome. The bread pudding was weird and unappealing. Thank you.
google avatar

Julius Z.

Yelp
Ate there the other day. Food was so-so. It would have been better if it was hot. Had a burger that was supposed to be pink but was overdone. And fries were soggy. I don't think I will be visiting there again. Do yourself a favor and eat elsewhere.

Yelp
Great little hole in the wall bar with fantastic upscale tapas! We went later in the evening on a weeknight and there was still a wait but it wasn't too long. There was only one waitress so service was somewhat slow but she was doing a great job trying to keep up. We shared the Ahi Tuna Ceviche which was tasty. He got the Chicken Tika Masala and I opted for the Duck Confit. He enjoyed his dish. Plenty of spice but not too much. My duck surprised me a little. I had anticipated a breast but it was a small leg/thigh. The flavor was nice but there wasn't much meat. It was tasty but on the dry side. On the plus side of that - room for pie and ice cream!! Blueberry pie and ice creams were fantastic! Plenty of beer/cocktail options too. Fun place! Would definitely go again to try more dishes. We saw some delectable things coming out of the kitchen. Definitely try them when you're in town and plan to eat your way thru the entire menu!

Yelp
Good drinks . Disappointing food - Mac and cheese is overly greasy and overcooked , Elk sausage was not elk-y and kinda sad . Will return for drinks but not food . Good service .

Yelp
I was just reminded that the only thing that's constant is change. This was my most favorite place when we were here pre-Covid, and went back to Salida with this restaurant as a top priority. It changed hands last spring. The place is now EXTREMELY loud, and so crowded that it may become the birthplace of the next Covid strain. My husband and I started texting as we were tired of reading lips. I asked our server if this was the usual noise level, and she said yes. That said, their menu items were less than before, but still decent with small, medium and large plate offerings. There was no paper menu option, as our server said the offerings sometimes change several times during the day. Gone were my bacon wrapped dates and other choices I cherished and had previously reviewed on Yelp. They seem to offer extremes, going from a nice selection of vegetarian (and GF items, for an upcharge) to veal. I was all set to order the French Onion Soup, then re-read the description, and it has veal broth in it. For the life of me, why turn a lovely soup that really can shine with a vegetable broth, or even a beef broth, to throwing in veal (infant cow) broth. That's my personal bias. We ordered Greek Olives, and they were warm and a great way to start. My French 75 cocktail was quite good, but a little on the small side for the price. I ordered a vegetarian sandwich, and I am NOT vegetarian, and it was delicious. My husband ordered lamb meatballs, and we both agreed, they were quite ordinary. We could not tell the difference between the lamb meat and the traditional ground beef. We had planned to order dessert but between the noise and bumping elbows, we just wanted to leave. It is still a nice restaurant, and obviously very popular, just not what we were hoping to re-discover.

Yelp
We discovered The Fritz on a whim. What a GREAT restaurant! We shared every serving; spicy olives, gumbo, potstickers...the portions were generous and delicious! The wait staff was happy, helpful and the food came up fast. The bartender is a mixologist! Can't wait to go there again, when we pass through on our way from skiing @ Wolf Creek to Breckinridge.

Yelp
August 5, 2023. First off, the food at The Fritz was excellent (thick pork chop, small steak, fried green tomatoes)! Otherwise our experience at the Fritz was disappointing and odd. We stopped in at 6pm to see about making reservations or getting on a waitlist and were told by the Chef that they did not offer either. When we arrived to eat at 6:30, 3 or 4 tables had "reserved" signs? Not sure how the Chef got this information wrong, but, OK, no big deal. We still got a table - inside not on the patio since those were reserved or full (again, not sure why the Chef told us reservations were not an option?!?). At any rate, we were seated quickly and waited to be served. When the waitress arrived, right away, we ordered drinks and an appetizer. While we were waiting for our drinks, the waitress took our food order. At that time, I reminded her that we had ordered drinks and an appetizer.... hoping those would arrive quickly. However, within 10 minutes the steak entree arrived (still no drinks or appetizer). Shortly after another entree arrived. Then, within a few more minutes, the pork chop entree arrive. Still NO drink order or appetizer. Eventually, the drink order showed up - an IPA beer that was "flat." Finally, the last item to be served was the appetizer (fried green tomatoes; very tasty, but 3 slices of tomato for $12 was not worth the tasty flavor). When I explained to the waitress that the beer was "flat" and asked for a new beer, the server brought out a Mexican Lager. Eventually, more than half way through our meal, I got an IPA that was not flat, but also not "comped" from the bill. Really?! While the food listed above was very good at The Fritz, we do not plan to return given the dining experience was not pleasant and the service was chaotic & very disappointing. Sherry Erie, CO

Yelp
What a great first dining experience I had at The Fritz! Friendly wait staff, amazing food and an energetic atmosphere to boot! Looking around the restaurant, you can see other Customers are happy too! Several parties patiently waited outside in the cold for a table to open up too. That says a lot! The staff thanks patrons as they leave too. Very nice. I had the Bibb lettuce salad, bacon wrapped dates and a burger. Each were exceptional!

Yelp
The Fritz is my favorite Reston Salida. Everything about it is amazing! From the jump, the staff is welcoming, knowledgeable and down to give you recommendations. The cocktails are great and there is an awesome wine and beer list. But the food. The food is the real reason to come here! The burger of the day is always a winner and you can't go wrong with the sandwiches, Mac and cheese and fries! Eat here and be merry!!

Nicole F.

Yelp
My husband and I ate here a few months ago and had such a wonderful evening. We weren't super hungry so we ordered a bunch of small plates and it was perfect. I can't remember everything we got but I do remember one for sure was the potstickers and they were incredible. The atmosphere was very laid back yet cool - it made for a beautiful date night spot! My husband travels to Salida for work so we were excited to be back and eat at this restaurant again but unfortunately it looks like they're temporarily closed. We're hoping it's open the next time we're in town.

T B.

Yelp
Always amazing, fun local atmosphere, great food and a menu that changes daily. How is a great experience

Yelp
Wow, what can I say?!? Loved The Fritz! It was packed, so we waited 45 mins, but totally worth it. The owner, Eric, came by and visited with us and recommended some amazing cocktails that he created. The kitchen knocked it out of the park, and every item that we ordered was truly fantastic. We can't wait to come back to the Fritz again another time.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved! Picked this restaurant for an impromptu date night while in Salida for one night and it was WONDERFUL!!! Great cocktails and delicious food.
google avatar

Adriana C.

Yelp
We came at an odd hour around 4 PM before heading out to watch all the live music! We got mac n cheese, truffle fries, and drinks for the table. I also got the asian salad with ahi tuna. The fries were amazing! My friend got the pate and when we asked the waitress what was actually in it she said "not sure, but to me it looks like cat food" and I could not agree more. The fault is solely on my friend for ordering this Lol. What the hell is pate? All I know is I will never order it. :) They have Anthony Bourdain decorations inside!!!!!! The perfect example on how to be kind, but not nice. My hero.

Yelp
The food was good, but I dined with a few friends and there were inconsistencies with our plates. (i.e. We ordered the Fritz, but they forgot to season the fries of some plates) And our table made a few other asks that night and the owner/head chef made our asks seem like a complete inconvenience. To work in the service industry you have to know how to serve others.

Kaye P.

Yelp
The food was excellent. We had warm olives as an appetizer, seafood gumbo and shrimp po boy with fries. The gumbo was amazing and packed full of shrimp, crab, crawfish with just the right amount of spice. The po' boy was quite possibly the best I've had with very nice breading in the shrimp. The fries were disappointing, very plain. Service was great. We were greeted by Eric, the owner who was very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this.

Yelp
Went on a Wednesday for dinner. We all got the burger of the day with truffle fries. Truffle fries were good, would order them again. Ordered 2 burgers medium rare & 1 medium. Only one came out medium rare, the other two were medium well and well done. My side salad with burger was terrible, the greens were fresh but if it was dressed, I couldn't tell. Also a tomato in the salad was partly rotten...yuck. Everything suffered from a lack of seasoning. The 2 servers working the outside dining area were great but they were rushed off their feet. I guess like everyplace else, they are suffering from a lack of help. We also ordered the Brussel sprouts.....walnuts in them were great but like everything else, they were in desperate need of salt. Potstickers were meh.
google avatar

Frankie W.

Yelp
WHOA - every course had us floored!! The meatball cabbage soup was so savory, the Korean chicken and waffles was uniquely delicious, and the berry tart and ice cream was heavenly! I also got a violet vodka lemonade which was excellent!! My husband and I HIGHLY recommend this place, especially after a long walk along the Arkansas river! :)
google avatar

Yelp
If I could give 4.5 stars I would. The Fritz is a lovely little place in Salida for a bite to eat. Service is friendly and food cooked to specifications and hot. My husband had the hot pastrami sandwich and it looked very good and arrived hot with hot fries. I ordered the pear burger which was served with the pear in the Neufchâtel cheese sauce. It was good and served medium as specified. It would have been more flavorful if it had a slice of pear on it. The pear got lost in the cheese. The side salad was baby greens with scant dressing. So many good looking choices on the menu that we'd love to return. And the pictures on the wall are wonderful!

Yelp
The Fritz is my go-to dinner place when visiting Salida. There's almost always room at the bar for two and a little something for everyone on the menu. This past Saturday was probably my fourth of fifth visit and it never gets old. Mussels and frites are always delicious, as are the ahi wontons. When the weather is warmer, I love their blood orange margarita. And if it's on the chillier side, there's enough decent wine by the glass or bottle to choose from. In addition to my regular picks, this time we tried the sardines, burger and beet salad. Sardines were beautiful and tasty. Beet salad was way better than I had anticipated, with bits of grapefruit and blackberries mixed in with the beets. There's always a bit of local flavor mixed in with tourists, which makes a fun place to people watch as well. Never gets old!

Hamidah G.

Yelp
Excellent, excellent, excellent!!! The owner Eric, (Rick) is so attentive and gave our part of five a fantastic evening. All of the food we ordered was excellent. Super tasty and well presented. I highly recommend this place. They make excellent cocktails too.

Danny E.

Yelp
Super fresh food, and quick! Spent our 4 year anniversary here and it was great! If we lived here we would probably hit this place up every Wednesday!

S M.

Yelp
Super bummed I had to use my phone to see menu. Requested a paper copy, but was told they are obsolete. I think it's more important to NOT be on phones at dinner with friends, so super off putting. Also didn't understand why we couldn't see our bill. The waitress only told us what we owed, and of course wanted no cash payment . Not sold on this and probably won't go back unless it changes. Bummed because we have been customers since it opened. It's just not customer friendly now.

Yelp
Mama was craving steak and bacon-wrapped dates. We aren't sure how the kids would do but the server assured us the mac n cheese was fancy yet didn't have breadcrumbs (my youngest kid's concerns.). As you can tell by the photo, they nailed it. He stole 4 pieces of my steak too (the plainer ones.) The jalapeño marg was awesome. I was bummed that the bacon-wrapped dates had blue cheese (not in description, and I have a dairy intolerance) and the steak was served with Hollandaise on top (even though I requested on side, due to same allergy but was sharing.) Brussels we're a tad soggy for my taste (we love them extra crispy.). 12yo loves the Asian salad and husband enjoyed the potstickers (though I notice a little inconsistency as table next to us got them too and there were well-done/dark brown while ours were much lighter).

Leonard T.

Yelp
My partner selected this restaurant for our dinner last night...and I just didn't want to micromanage every choice. But I should have! Seemed like a decent place to have a drink. The bar and bar area were pleasant enough and fairly busy. The outside patio area, covered by overlapping shade sails, was really a great space. The food was mediocre to simply bad. We ordered pot stickers, seaweed salad, spicy tuna ceviche, and shrimp lettuce wraps. The 6 pot stickers, filled with a chicken paste and served with a soy sauce dip, were ok, as was the seaweed salad, but nothing better than you would get at the dozen good case at Sam's Club or Trader Joe's. The spicy tuna ceviche was bland and soggy. The shrimp lettuce wraps were presented as an unrecognizable gooey chilled ooze in a bowl next to the lettuce leaves...this got sent back by my partner who never complains or makes waves. Have a drink at The Fritz while you wait for a table elsewhere

Yelp
OMG! Great vibe inside and out. Fabulous patio, beautiful interior - copper ceiling, rustic, art on the walls. Fabulous bar and bar staff! Nikki (guess at sp) and Atticus are knowledgeable and attentive. Eclectic and surprisingly diverse menu that serves everyone, no matter your dietary needs. We had a bottle of Bouza that Nikki poured a taste of. Delicious, balanced, complex. A Uruguayan grape: tennat. Vivino says its a tempranillo. Had the Spanish sardine appetizer that reminded me of Spanish boquerones, kinda.
