New East Austin Restaurant Front Page Is Now Serving Sandwiches - Eater Austin

"A new East Austin restaurant with a focus on New York-style sandwiches is now open in Govalle. The Front Page Restaurant and Bar can be found within the Springdale General complex at 1023 Springdale Road. It opened during South by Southwest in mid-March. Front Page’s neighborhood-friendly, counter-service menu highlights New York-style sandwiches, made with bread that’s baked in-house. Along with presumably other dishes, there will be cocktails, 16 beer taps, and a lengthy wine list." - Nadia Chaudhury

Google
Great bar with excellent food and, most importantly, an Arsenal scarf on the wall! (There’s also a Swansea one, but who cares?). Recommendation the brisket sandwich on sourdough. Tasty. So was the Greek salad.

Limited on tea. The bartender was great. Food was elevated bar food. I had the Cuban on a hoagie. Very filling. Loved the beer menu wished i was there off work hours. Happy hour specials were tempting.

Google
Get their bake potato! It’s HUGE and delicious! I paid extra for their brisket that they make in house. The potato normally comes with the usual like bacon, cheese, sour cream, and mayo. It was less than $13 total but so worth the price because two of my friends had to help to finish it. They also enjoyed the tuna salad sandwich. It’s a great place to hang out during the day with friends or even study with free wifi. For sure, give their food a try!

I came here to meet up with my best friend ever. Was awesome vibes, the bartenders were super nice. Great selection of draft beers. The Caesar salad was BOMB. Also had a lot of cool games even though the one we played first had missing cards (exploding kittens (nsfw)).

Stopped by The Front Page (TFP) for lunch after picking up out-of-town guests at the airport. What a cool place ...! You order at the bar, and they bring your food out when its ready. Salads and sandwiches mostly, so we tried one of each. The Greek Salad was very good, nice dressing served on the side. Ample salad for two to share. After a bit of conversation with the bartender we choose the traditional Italian sandwich. A nice-sized sammy, perfect to split for two. The bread was very fresh, and there was a good-sized portion of Italian meats and cheese. We liked TFP and would go back to try other things on the menu. Recommend TFP for a good salad, sandwich or combo!

Google
Super friendly and helpful staff when ordering a gluten free, dairy free dinner. The space was a bit louder than my preference since it was a game night and other guests were highly invested in it. I was really grateful to have peaceful and covered outdoor seating as an option. I think there was an off shoot area that get separate from the main bar/restaurant that was indoor as well.

Google
Great local bar with GREAT food. Typically I hate bar food but I come here just to eat sometimes. My favourites are the pretzel bites, cheesy bread, turkey cobb, and southern Italian sandwich. Love the bartenders here too, Porter, Chuck and Paul are great!

Google
The Front Page is a tucked away gem off Springdale in the Springdale General Complex. The menu is stacked with sandwiches and salads, offering soup seasonally. You can order a generously sized side salad (photo included) and plain cheesy bread for $11, a steal in this town. The sandwiches come in a variety if sizes / breads. The ranch is zesty and great with the cheesy bread. The staff is friendly and the food comes out at a good pace. There is a trivia hosted on Wednesday evening at 8 pm on the dog friendly patio. The host is great and there is usually a good crowd but enough space to grab a table. Good spot for a group too. Conveniently located near ABP for a pre or post climb bite!

Yelp
The Front Page is where this establishment should be on your places to eat in Austin! It is a very chill laid back joint that doesn't need to brag about how cool it is - that's how cool it is! The food at this place is simple yet perfectly served. The sandwiches are both cold or hot and the bread is divine. I usually get the hoagie roll for the hot Italian sandwich, chips on the side and usually I go for their snack mix to start while I imbibe in their Formula 1 which is a beer shot combo for a reasonable price. I could spend all afternoon here and not break the bank given their reasonable prices. The staff is awesome and they are very approachable on requests without any needless drama. The music in this joint is great and they have both board and arcade games for someone looking to waste the day here. The Front Page is a great place to bring friends, have drinks, play games, and attend the weekly trivia night or other calendared festivities that keep this place feeling so cool.

Yelp
Came here for lunch today with a friend and really loved this spot and the area it's in. I got half a Greek salad and turkey club sandwich. The meats are smoked in house and the bread is homemade here so I definitely enjoyed my sandwich but I would maybe try something else next time just because I'm not crazy about cold slices of cheese but that's just me. The salad was also good but nothing crazy, just a good standard Greek salad. The service was fast and the bartender was very nice! This restaurant/bar is in the same building as a coffee shop and various other stores. Across the street there's also some cute little shops that sell local art and goods that would be great gifts. Definitely a good spot to check out!

Yelp
Amazing food I had the turkey club Smokey fresh flavor with great beer choice. Atmosphere is spot on highly recommend stopping in or making it a weekly spot.

Yelp
Holy cow what a sandwich!!! I did not do this place justice with the one picture that I took of my food. It's a smaller bar with a good selection of beers on tap or cans. They even had Sours on tap which made me automatically love it!! I sat by someone who worked next door and she recommended the food so I got a sandwich. * Sourdough Southern Italian Just get it. I know the picture does not look appetizing but oh my God was it delicious. I'm not kidding when I tell you I almost cried. The meats were deeply flavorful and the sourdough been charged just enough with the right amount of oil to make it crispy yet not greasy. I honestly don't remember much after that first bite because I loved it so much. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I stopped by The Front Page for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't busy at all... the workers were pleasant, the food came out quickly and tasted great, and it was very affordable! I'll definitely be back! FAST FACTS: * Parking - Free lot with plenty of spots around the building * Reservations - No but not necessary * Online ordering - Pickup available through Toast and delivery available through DoorDash SERVICE - The workers were all very nice and welcoming! I placed the order at the bar and food was delivered to our table about 10 minutes later. PRICING - The total was $26.26 after tax but before tip for a smoked turkey sandwich on sourdough ($11), a classic Italian on a hoagie ($11), and an iced tea ($2.25). I thought the pricing was very reasonable for the size of the sandwiches and the quality of the ingredients. SMOKED TURKEY SANDWICH ON SOURDOUGH (9/10) - This was a solid sandwich! The smoked turkey had phenomenal flavor and was super juicy. The mustard and tomatillo chutney paired with it perfectly and it didn't get soggy at all. I'd order this again! CLASSIC ITALIAN ON A HOAGIE (8/10) - I only had a bite of this one but it was very good! All the toppings were fresh and there was plenty of salami and ham. I'd order this again! I don't drink so I can't speak to the bar scene but I think The Front Page is a fantastic affordable option for a tasty lunch if you're in the mood for sandwiches, salads, or just sharing some appetizers. I'd recommend it to others!

Yelp
The bartenders are nice, the food and drinks are good! The sourdough grilled cheese is heavenly when you add bacon. You've got a standard selection of salads. The brisket sandwich is a little dry, but still good. The tomato soup is amazing. There's plenty of parking. Plenty of seating inside and outside. My one gripe is the music. I've been here twice and once it was a lot of old Shania Twain, Faith Hill stuff and the prior time was bad 90s music. For reference, I generally love 90s music but what they were playing just wasn't it.

Yelp
Still loving this place! I always try to go right when they open during the weekday and am always greeted by the staff (normally see Andrew, very friendly!) and offered tasty suggestions if I'm ever in the mood to try something new! Plenty of parking as the building is shared with various other businesses. I cannot recommend this place enough! Definitely check it out and enjoy the experience!

Yelp
This place is cute. I went here for trivia and ordered a sandwich. The vegan sandwich was surprisingly good, usually vegan bar food is much more bland. It's a bit on the pricy side vs portion size but not outrageously so. The trivia was outdoors and it was kind of cold, so fair warning if you go in the colder months. The staff was helpful and friendly. I'd definitely come back for trivia or if I'm in the area.

Yelp
Delish sandwiches, easy parking and pick up! Cool patio that I plan to return to soon!

Yelp
Great neighborhood place close to the airport with excellent friendly service, fantastic food and brewpub beer. What more could you ask for. Will be back when in town.

Yelp
My BLT salad w added brisket was super peppery. The other friends who also ordered salads said the same. I will come back to try the sandwiches. Poor girl was training on the pad and her supervisor was overseeing from the other side of the bar. She wasn't ready for the group of us. Food came out pretty quick! Inside is dark with at least 10 tables. They even have board games. We ate outdoors though.
google avatar

Yelp
The cheese bread is surprisingly delicious. I did not expect such a depth of flavor from the looks of it. The smoked turkey sandwich was unfortunately too heavy on the mustard. It completely overshadowed every other element. I also love how the seating i inside is mostly wooden stools. They feel super heavy duty which is a bonus for a polite size person.

Nataliana E.

Yelp
i enjoyed this spot a lot! the food was good, however i wish the portion sizes were larger. service was good and the bartender was friendly. i also thought the food hall set up was nice. i would come back if i came through the town!

Yelp
It was a somewhat quiet environment, not crowded. And we only had a drink on this Saturday night after a Omakase experience next door. This review is only based on that one drink. The drinks were okay, but not outstanding. The $21 red wine wasn't something my sister could rave about. And with my Paloma I had the option between a tahini or rock salt on the rims. My Paloma was too tart and bitter, and I could not finish it. We did enjoy the outdoor space too ourselves.

Yelp
Great local spot! But I do miss the imperial pints. I guess what they say is true ... Americans cannot do simple math and have fallen in social decline. Nothing is classier, or more refreshing, than an imperial pint. Cheers
google avatar

Yelp
I stopped by The Front Page to grab a bite to eat. I ordered the smoked turkey sandwich. While the sandwich was delicious, the Dijon mustard was ALL on one end of the sandwich‐‐the end that I finished last! It was quite shocking to eat that much Dijon mustard!
google avatar

Kayla L.

Yelp
I had the Italian on a hoagie. One of the best sandwiches in Austin for sure. Additionally, the customer service was great. This guy (maybe the manager?) explained the menu and made recommendations. I'll be back!
google avatar

Yelp
My husband and I stopped here for a drink on a Saturday afternoon. Not many people here but we liked the vibe. We could pick from a list of draft drinks off of the wall. Only one cider but they did have a rose on draft it appeared. Overall it was a cool little place to grab a drink and chill. The food was a little limited for me as I am both dairy and gluten free. Luckily we ate before grabbing a drink here.

Yelp
Love this place and try to stop in when I'm in town. Nicer than a dive bar in a good area with easy parking and great, basic, non greasy bar food. Love the Italian
google avatar

Yelp
We stopped in here before dinner at Uroko and had a fun time! I especially love that they have a charitable menu of drinks to choose from - you choose a beverage that will come with a token that you put into one of three charity options where the Front Page will donate. (It reminded me of OKRA Charity bar in Houston). I'd def come back to visit if I'm ever in the area!

Yelp
I wish I could give this a 3.75 but Yelp doesn't work that way. When I walked in around 11:45 on a Sunday, there was one person sitting at the bar but otherwise it was empty. There were a few lights on, but I think they were relying on mostly natural light so it was pretty dim in there. I ordered the Turkey club on sourdough with a Caesar side salad. The salad had a TON of the red onions. I will admit that I skimmed the menu too quickly and for whatever reason thought the red onion was mixed with the dressing but it's not. I hate onions, so I picked them off (that was my bad). There was also no cheese on the salad, which I think definitely would have helped. For the sandwich, I did the Turkey club on sourdough with no tomato. There wasn't much of the zesty ranch on the sandwich so it was a bit dry, so I added leftover Caesar dressing to the sandwich. The Turkey had really good flavor, and even had a bit of a kick to it. Overall though, it felt kind of like eating in a pub during the day and doesn't have much atmosphere for a lunch spot. I think if you are going here to watch a game and drink and happen to eat, it's fine. Otherwise, it didn't stand out enough for me to want to come back. It has potential, it just didn't do enough for me.

Yelp
Great place to chill out, have a drink, and their sandwiches and salads are awesome! Highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Shari D.

Yelp
I met three of my girlfriends to celebrate a birthday at the front page. I had a kale salad. I opted for smoked turkey in addition to the onions and avocados that were included I thought the turkey was rather meager. I did enjoy the salad, except for the fact that the little tiny pieces of turkey were hard to find. it's a bar with outdoor tables and some indoor tables. It's part of a complex that has other food vendors. If I were in the neighborhood, I might go back.
google avatar

Yelp
I appreciate this place but find your beer prices really problematic. Your staff is friendly and your sandwiches and salads are all slightly above average compared to other cafes in the area, but why are they less expensive than a beer? An average 16 oz pour in this city runs around 7 to 8 dollars. You have opted to offer guests 10oz and 20 oz beers, with the 20oz often being double digit prices. Not a cool thing to do to your customers, especially for local beers. But I guess you have to recoup some of that expensive rent somehow.
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
Food really good and friendly service. I was there for Sunday lunch but will be back to drink some beer soon.
google avatar

Kristen K.

Yelp
This is my favorite spot in Austin to hang out and finish work on my computer, catch up with friends, or grab a beer. They always have a great selection of beers on tap, the service is top-notch, and the food is delicious. It's a tucked-away "dive" bar in the middle of East Austin and very unassuming in the best way possible. The only thing I would change is adding merch to their offerings!
google avatar

Soujanya G.

Yelp
This is a great place to eat and the sandwiches are served in old timey news papers which is cute, but the prices on the menu don't reflect the actual price which was kind of a bummer considering we expected the sandwhiches to be $10 but it was $14-15 dollars each. The Italian and Caprese sandwiches are both really good and their house made salad that comes with it is pretty decent as well.
google avatar

Cesar D.

Yelp
The food was absolutely incredible. BLT salad is a 10/10 and the turkey club is just fantastic
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
I stopped in one afternoon for a sandwich and to watch a game. I found it very friendly with several regulars, a good beer selection and a tasty sandwich. There are several screens and the bartender was extremely friendly and accommodating. It's not a large place and the screens are in normal size TVs but that also makes it feel fairly homey. I think the bar is there place to be if you come in alone. It's easy to strike up a conversation and find some true fans.
google avatar

Paul H.

Yelp
Literally the best bar in EATX. These guys make you feel like you're home. Whether you stop in for a quick pint or stumble upon one of the many events they host on a regular basis. Great sandwiches (rumor is...they make their own bread, just ask Chuck) and better drinks and beer selection. Old school bar with a new school and warm atmosphere. Schafer and Porter do everything in their power to make this place - the most wonderful place. Come in and become apart of the community. It's all love here, always.
google avatar

Aleeph M.

Yelp
Hey... You Yes you You came here for a reason... and the Front Page is that reason. Don't dilly dally and make your way down here. The Front Page is a home away from home in every way. It's truly a place where people come together to create a community. Drinks aside. There is so much here to make anyone feel welcome and that's what's amazing about it. Texan, transplant, or nomad this is a place to stop into and enjoy. Lovely people with a welcoming environment.

Yelp
This place is one of the very best in Austin. Grew up in Austin, the vibe and people here are great. Highly recommend to anyone. Food and people worth it and people into dangerous liaisons won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
Great spot with indoor/outdoor seating. I've never had anything but the Smoked Turkey Salad but that's because it's so good that I have to get it every time I go!

Yelp
Hip place in Austin near the airport. We had no clue this place was over there, it was kind of hidden. We are glad we found it. The beer and sandwich we ordered was very good. The guys working we're friendly and my wife and I had a great time.
google avatar

Aaron G.

Yelp
Chill vibes, cool staff and very well-crafted cocktails. Good beer selection on draft and in bottles and cans(so just clap your hands, just clap your hands).

Jamie B.

Yelp
Needed a quick bite and this place was right around the corner. I was extremely impressed. Amazing homemade bread and the staff was super friendly. Also, my first time having pickled onions in a Caesar salad.. and it was delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Visited here after just arriving in Austin. I was looking for place to get a decent, healthy meal. Looked at their website, hours and menu and this place looked perfect. When I got there, they were not serving food. There was only staff at the bar and they were terrible. They looked up briefly as we walked in, but said nothing, not even a hello, then ignored us. The place was dead with only one table of customers. I am not surprised. Needless to say, we did not bother staying. Don't come here. Very disappointing and false advertising.
google avatar

Savannah K.

Yelp
Searched for something tasty after flying in later one Tuesday evening. The Front Page was open late so we had a winner. There was NO ONE there (at 10pm) which was excellent because it was rather quiet for a bar. We both got the caprese sandwich and it was so delicious! Parking was super simple right outside the building and the staff were very friendly and fun!
google avatar

Holly H.

Yelp
I love this place. Chill, not too crowded (when I go), not too loud or bright, bartenders who have such amazing situational awareness and know their audience, and good variety of beers on tap/full bar. Almost don't wanna positively review so you nut jobs leave this place alone. It's a perfect neighborhood pub.
google avatar

Brian V.

Yelp
Friendly spot for a drink & quick bite. We had salad & sandwiches (turkey & tofu). Everything was great. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
A couple of snafus caused me to almost give The Front Page a lower rating, but I'll get to that. First, the good. They're open late and the sandwich I got was pretty tasty, if on the smaller side from what I expected. They had a Yelp special this week and I guess it wasn't a full sandwich. While I was waiting for my food, I looked through other pictures on Yelp and I will have to go back for a full sandwich or a salad, cuz it all looked great. The first snafu was that I tried to call in my order, but the phone number didn't work. It just said nobody could be reached. I was starving, so I was a bit frustrated at having to go in to order. Thankfully, they were quick to make the food, but this seems like an oversight by management. On top of that, they automatically added $0.50 for my order to be to-go without telling me. Considering my sandwich was wrapped in a piece of paper and put in a bag with a single napkin, I don't really understand the up-charge. You need to pay a dishwasher, don't you? I never understood a to-go charge unless there's really a big cost in the take-out boxes. Not the case here. Very close to being a 3* review, but the environment seemed cool and I'll have to go back and dine-in while I have a beer at some point.

Yelp
I had just come from a week long conference in town, and I was new to the area. I needed a spot to grab a drink and a bite. Enter The Front Page. It has a great sandwich menu with some salads as well. I ordered the margarita, and the best turkey sandwich I've ever had! I think the owner or manager was there, and he helped in selecting the sandwich. He was also really chatty and helpful in some other recommendations around town as well. The Front Page is located in what looks like a fairly new development. If I had more time, I would have explored what else was back here! If you're looking for a cool joint with a ton of craft beers and great neighborhood ambiance, go here! There's plenty of space on the patio, and the beer list is awesome too!

Andrew C.

Yelp
Local gem that features great, reasonably priced beer and food. Bartenders are knowledgeable and patrons are mostly locals. If you want a dirty 6th street shithole, this place isn't for you.
google avatar

Laurene T.

Yelp
The Front Page is a welcome breath of fresh air for the east side of Austin!! We've been up there a few times now, and they always make the most amazing cocktails! DONT be afraid to make friends with the bartenders and let them make you something unique! They have an amazing, rotating list of 16 beers on tap, and even a great selection of wine. They have a solid happy hour and some unique menu items if you decide you're hungry! The patio is dog friendly and they also have a huge stack of game to borrow. Definitely worth checking out and best of all, they're open...all...day!

Yelp
Ordered BLT salad and Cobb Salad from Door Dash. The good news: the lettuce was fresh. The bad news: everything was cold (one expects the meat on salads to be warm). The bacon was chewy and stale, the chicken was cold and gelatinous, and the dressing was cloyingly sweet. I didn't finish the Cobb and threw the other away. This was a $40 order of salad. Quite a disappointment.

John T.

Yelp
The finest airport bar that is NOT in an airport. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Excellent sandwiches, salads, and an on-point and diverse set of beer taps. A hidden gem within the Springdale General complex, that is definitely worth a visit.
