"Going to The Front Porch for brunch is never the wrong choice, especially when you can snag a table on their miniscule front patio that often sits right in the sun. This place on the border of the Mission and Bernal Heights makes Southern food like chicken and waffles, chicken fried steaks, and powdery beignets with a tart raspberry sauce. Everything here is so good (and hearty) it might inspire you to walk it off and then loop back to the red checkerboard-lined dining room for a fried chicken dinner. photo credit: Brit Finnegan photo credit: Brit Finnegan photo credit: Brit Finnegan photo credit: Brit Finnegan photo credit: Brit Finnegan" - Ricky Rodriguez

This was on my list for a while to try. I don't get over this way much, so we decided to try it out while here. We did not have a reservation but still got seated. The place looks nice and has a full bar and a good menu. The food has some different combinations of things together. Some pickey eaters might not like it. All the food was cooked correctly and tasted wonderful. There is a kids menu as well. The food was cooked fresh and hot. I would give them 8 out of 10 stars.

Great food! Our first time here and I am definitely impressed! We will hopefully be able to get down that way to try it again.

This was my first time at this establishment. A friend and I were looking for a place to sit and half bite to eat with some conversation and we saw this place as we were walking. We didn't have a reservation but the lady was nice enough seat us out on the porch because other events was going on inside. I ordered the shrimp and grits and my friend had the chicken and waffles. The shrimp and grits was awesome! I really enjoyed it. The seating outside was comfortable. The atmosphere was great. The service was even better. I will be returning again

As always, the food and employees are exceptional!!! However, a few small things that I think would have brought me to give a 5 star review. 1st, our table had honey and some other stick substance right where my husband would normally rest his arm. 2nd, we were there at 1 p.m. on Sunday, I guess we did not realize that they only serve brunch until 3 p.m. on Sundays. There were only 5 lunch items... 2 seemed more breakfast than lunch. 3rd and may just be my personal thing... cheap mismatched silverware. For brunch, where many would want coffee, the silverware had no spoons... 2 forks and 1 knife. We both got the Bacon cheese burger... delicious!

Welcoming and accessible, our family enjoyed brunch here. Macie took excellent care of us, answering questions and checking on us and our food. The fries in the Poutine were cooked just right and the sausage gravy was flavorful and not too heavy. The Shrimp & Grits featured hearty shrimp, pork belly, kale and teeny blistered tomatoes. The slight heat on the sauce brought it all together. The Steak & Eggs featured a large NY strip and 2 eggs cooked precisely to order. Well-seasoned homefries rounded out this tasty dish. The Chicken & Waffles was loaded with flavorful chicken and accompanied by crispy fried green tomatoes that you can tell are breaded by hand. Dessert of multi-layered carrot cake and creamy strawberry cheesecake left us jokingly asking for the nap room - we were invited to enjoy the rocking chairs on the front porch for as long as we would like! Thank you for a great family meal with excellent food and excellent service, in a unique and historic setting.

Google
Went for dinner tonight and the service was amazing and the atmosphere can't be beat. The food was very good the only thing stopping at 5star review is I ordered the pork shank and half of it was steaming heat and the other half of the same shank was ice cold which was very odd. The waitress was very quick to offer assistance in rectifying the issue. I highly recommend the Brussels with Bacon.

Google
Without competition this is our favorite date spot in St. Mary's county. The chicken & waffles are the best I've ever had and I highly recommend the beef tip dip appetizer. Cocktails are excellent as well!

Went to this nice restaurant while in town for a football game. It was good to stop in this nice quiet place to relax and have some good food. The people was wonderful and it's wonderful view as you sit out to enjoy your meal. Stop by you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Was a nice eating experience. The service was incredible and the ambiance was great with the restaurant being located in an old historic home. The food was not as good as I thought it was and the beer choices were very limited, though I did see a nice selection of specialty drinks. Overall a nice place to check out with prices on the menu being pretty descent.

Yelp
Last night was my second time going to the Front Porch. They have a rather large menu and it's definitely a good spot for those that want a protein forward menu with sides. Like every other place in Leonardtown they have limited vegetarian options that never change. I think last night was a tough service day for them and it showed. We sat next to other patrons on the patio that were repeatedly asking for their cocktails. They brought me the wrong cocktail at first and swapped it out for the correct one eventually - the one I was handed belonged to the table next to me. When our food came out (I got a soup and salad and my partner got chicken and waffles) it looked pretty good! My soup was delicious and my partner liked their entree. I was missing my dressing for my salad and it took over 20 minutes for them to bring it to me so I ended up only eating a cup of soup for dinner. They didn't apologize for forgetting my dressing just made a bunch of excuses as to how busy they are - which is an inappropriate way to handle a service miss. We may come back. There are limited options here in Leonardtown and they do have decent food, but the service was disappointing this visit and I understand that does happen at times.

Yelp
I ate here twice during my visit and the food was awesome! The staff is friendly and attentive! There is indoor and outdoor seating and it really is such a historical place! It doesn't feel like a restaurant, it feels like a house! I recommend the crab cake sandwich and the green beans as my favorites! Definitely try it out if you're ever in Leonardtown! I will define stopping by again!

Hillary F.

Yelp
The food was delicious and fresh. The service was also quick, and our waitress was extremely friendly and attentive. This is a nice brunch/lunch spot with outdoor seating, and they even offer mimosas, which was a plus!

Yelp
Somehow despite living in this town my whole life, I'd never had the privilege to dine here. I'm so glad I finally made the time, and can't wait to do so again! We (two people) decided to order much and split all, trying: Brussels sprouts, daily quiche, a Caesar salad, side risotto, side fries, and the crème brûlée to finish. The Brussels sprouts are a DO NOT miss, I am still thinking about them. So much wonderful and flavorful goat cheese, and a fantastic sharing portion. The quiche (that day spinach and Parmesan) was another standout, with perfect crunchy crust and robust flavor. The risotto was perhaps a bit Al dente for some taste, but I personally struggle with a soggy texture and LOVED the side. The salad and fries were good too, iterations of a classic. Creme brûlée ended the meal perfectly, creamy and sugary. The inside of the place too is incredible. The historic Sterling House is upheld. And there are even some census records on the walls. For any ~spooky~ fans out there, I always heard growing up that it was haunted!! For reassurance to the reader, I felt no ghosts ;). But I did feel the history, and loved getting to experience historic SOMD and some great food. I'm so looking forward to coming back, and recommend it to all in town and to the folks looking for a fun weekend on the Bay!

Yelp
Well first off. I have been impressed with service here everywhere we have eaten. Service is far superior to what we experience at home. That being said the food was delicious. The restaurant was casual and comfortable. With indoor as well as outdoor dining.

Yelp
This place is so worth the stop if you are in southern Maryland. The food is sooooo tasty. Went with Jambalaya. Perfect size and protein packed nearly every bite. Sat outside on the porch and enjoyed the windy day. The crowd was packed with families and people on dates. The service was excellent and friendly. The price, for the food and with the service, is the best priced meal I've had in a while. I would definitely visit again if in the area. May become my go-to for the area.

Yelp
The Front Porch will always be one of my family and I's favorite go to restaurants in Downtown Leonardtown MD. It was nice to get back there again today. My parents and I enjoyed our meals. Never disappointed and the food is always delicious and the staff is always so welcoming! We love the ambiance and the feeling of being set back in time with it being housed in an Old Victorian house.

Yelp
We came by to celebrate our daughters birthday early while we were visiting her. We were seated right away upstairs and our waitress Jazlyn was quick with our drink order. We also ordered the Brussel Sprouts with Bacon ($10.99) and Filet Tip Dip ($15.99). We enjoyed. visiting until our appetizers arrived. We were taken aback when the Filet Tip Dip arrived it was more like tips and gravy with bread than a dip. It tasted pretty good just not what we expected. They really liked the Brussel sprouts with bacon and goat cheese. Our main dishes were Shrimp and Grits ($23.99), Maple Salmon Salad ($16.99) and Pan Seared Filet ($28.99) Our meals were all good. I really enjoyed the salad and the shrimp and grits were good not great, the filet was good not great. Over all our meal was good and we enjoyed the atmosphere and time to visit without feeling rushed. Our waitress Jazlyn was attentive and kept drinks full and table cleared. The prices were a bit high but ok for special occasions. We would revisit when in the area.

Julissa M.

Yelp
I am absolutely furious with the service at The Front Porch. I brought my family who was visiting from California, decided to have brunch here to have a nice experience together, but it turned out to be awful. We sat at our table for over 20 minutes without anyone offering us drinks or even water. No one came to take our order or check on us at all. The lack of attention and service was unacceptable. Given the terrible experience, I will never be returning to this restaurant. I expected so much more, especially since I had brought my family here to enjoy what I thought would be a good meal. Highly disappointed!

Yelp
Wow. Our food was so good. We had the Brussel sprout appetizer. I had the salad with the steak. It was coooked perfectly and the quality of the steak was so good. We will be back.

Yelp
I've always really liked this place for some very authentic country cooking and laid back ambiance so I was more than slightly amused when another couple waiting to be seated asked if there was someplace "better" in town where he could wear a suit and showcase his gravity ravaged arm candy. Judging from the seams bursting on his too tight khakis and worked over Sperry topsiders, I'd say Captain Obsequious was trolling in the wrong zip code if he expected to find a Michelin kitchen, a Master Sommelier and paparazzi awaiting his arrival. He seemed crestfallen when I told him no, and that I only frequented establishments that were second rate. Silly question, silly answer Mr. Khaki. BTW The Front Porch continues to fire on all cylinders. Five enduring stars.

Alli C.

Yelp
Phenomenal food and service. We sat on the porch and the ambiance was wonderful. We can't wait to go back!

Frank C.

Yelp
My daughter told me the food was really good here. She was correct. I had the jambalaya which was spicy. It was a little too salty though. Overall very tasty. They had a couple of large parties in. I figured better order an appetizer because it was going to be a while for our order. Our server was polite and apologized for the hour wait for our food. The issue I had was with the appetizer coming out with our meal. Really! My wife has a food allergy and can't have dairy. She notified the server to not have any Parmesan cheese top off on the soup. We received the soup with the cheese in it and had them take it back. We didn't received any French fries we ordered. It was a very disappointing experience.

Yelp
Tonight we celebrated my Moms 90th birthday at The Front Porch In Leonardtown. What a lovely place for a family celebration. Our table was set up in in large antique room which was perfect for 13 people. Everyone ordered appetizers - The Brussel sprouts were delicious and also the Crab dip was delectable. I had the crab cake and salad with a side of delicious spinach. Very good. My husband had The Reuben which was not hot. Just slightly warm. My sister loved her Maple Salmon salad. It was delicious. My Mom got the Filet Mignon topped with crabmeat. She loved it. However it wasn't lump crabmeat. Everyone seemed happy with their meals. However when you order a Seafood Pot Pie that's what you expect. Not a scoop of saucy vegetables with seafood mixed and topped with a flat pastry disc. That was a disappointment. Our waitress Sabrina was the highlight of the evening. Thanks Sabrina for holds g it all together. The cake table was perfect.

Valerie T.

Yelp
Came with my husband and two friends. We made a reservation and were seated immediately. The food was pretty bad. I ordered the special parmesan crusted salmon on truffle risotto. The parmesan crust was burnt so bad, it was inedible. I'm actually surprised it made it to me. It was covered in sauce like I wouldn't notice it was burnt to a crisp. I sent it back and asked for just the generic salmon they have on the menu. It came out and was raw in the middle. Again inedible. So I just ate the risotto. I will say they comped my dinner and the server was very apologetic. My friend ordered a filet and it was overcooked and lacked seasoning. The crab dip was super thick and pasty. Other than the drinks, nothing here would make me drive the 40 minutes from Waldorf again. The service is the only reason I'm giving 2 stars.

Dean N.

Yelp
Just had The Front Porch's chicken and waffles and I might as well have been putting syrup on cardboard. Chicken was badly over cooked, dried out and stringy. Literally, the syrup came in those individual packets you get in motel breakfasts. A side order of fried green tomatoes was tasteless and similarly over cooked. My wife's shrimp and grits had too much sauce and it over powered the dish. I strongly recommend you look elsewhere before deciding to dine here.

Mama M.

Yelp
Everything about this spot is great. The service the food, even good parking. Bottomless mimosa is always a great.

John C.

Yelp
A nice, quiet dining experience for Leonardtown. The menu was great food was good and the staff were very attentive. Good atmosphere, great parking. Will visit again.

Igor B.

Yelp
The Front Porch has it all: variety of food, great quality of each, great service and pleasant atmosphere. Tuna wonton was perfection and it came in a larger portion than anticipated. Vegetable bed, and every other component was carefully crafted along with high quality tuna and appropriate sauce. Meatballs were rich and flavorful and green beans absolutely perfect in softness and flavor. Short cake was delicious. Service was attentive, helpful and friendly. This is place not to be missed when visiting this area.

Devin B.

Yelp
Food was amazing! The crab dip was amazing as well as the brussels sprouts. The drink was very good too!

Me M.

Yelp
The food was fabulous and our server, Ashlynn, was so attentive to every need, even during an increasing lunch crowd.

Kimber V.

Yelp
I have a Galentine dinner date with my mother here. The restaurant is quaint, the staff is friendly, and the food was amazing! We ordered stuffed mushrooms and scalloped oysters as appetizers. Both were delicious. Next we ordered the chopped wedge salad which was served with green goddess dressing this was tasty. For entrees my mother ordered the lobster ravioli and I ordered the filet & scallop scampi. Everything was seasoned and cooked well. The food portions were generous and we both had to take food home. The shared dessert trio was scrumptious. We will definitely be back!

Kara S.

Yelp
The worst service, an hour to be served, if you love all things garlic, get the crab dip-but know you won't be able to taste the crab, but they give you a loaf of very crispy bread slices...the crispy, Parmesan potatoes- WTH?!?! Came w/o Parmesan cheese and crispy was just a less than fluffy way to say they were over cooked, larger chunks of breakfast potatoes that when I asked if this was right-the waiter took the plate and brought it back with a teaspoon of Parmesan cheese thrown on top of the now cold potatoes. And I never got my Coke after asking 2 people for it. So disappointed and there were plenty empty tables on the porch, and in both rooms, and the bar area. This is unusual for them as they used to be a favorite of mine, but they've been going downhill the past year. Today was my last visit.

Peter C.

Yelp
Stopped there for lunch. They had no real seating for over 90 minutes ( - good problem to have). So we sat at the bar I had the hamburger (with pork, onion rings and cheese on....) momma K had salad with steak and Glammom, steak tips in gravy. My Moscow mules were top notch. The food was well prepared, exactly as had appeared on the menu. This was worth it, they also had a phenomenal selection of bourbon- sadly the sun was not yet over the yard arm so I had to pass.....

James M.

Yelp
Our latest dining experience here was disappointing. Even with a reservation there was a delay in seating. The hostess was also taking phone in orders and did not seem interested in us. When we were eventually seated, the dining room was filthy with spilled and dropped food everywhere. The servers just walked around it. They must be short staffed because everything took forever. 25 minutes to get two drinks. 90 minutes to get four entrees. Although the food is ok, it's not worth waiting 90 minutes. I think they are out of my rotation until I get some reports that they care about customer service.

Suzette S.

Yelp
If you're looking for a delicious, nice restaurant in St Mary's county, this is your place! Everything I have ever ordered here has been delicious (except the peach margarita- it was too salty for my taste). This time we got 2 appetizers - the Brussel sprouts and pork nachos. The Brussel sprouts had a perfect combination of bacon, smooth goat cheese, honey and seasonings. I was shocked at how delicious it was. It is a huge portion and my husband and I couldn't finish it. The pulled pork nachos were also good; my favorite part was the pickled onions. I always wish for more cheese, but other than that it was delicious. The chips were thin, crisp and fresh and the special sour cream was a great pair with the deep fried jalapeños. This restaurant is always a wonderful place to go- wonderful atmosphere, great service, cute outdoor seating, and fresh, delicious food.

Andrea P.

Yelp
We held my Mother-in-law's repast at the front porch this past week. It was wonderful! The GM, Jordan, was so patient and flexible as our guest list kept growing. She was very accommodating; responded quickly to questions, and made sure our event was smooth and that we didn't have to think about a thing. The food was delicious, generous, and beautifully presented. The service was excellent. The space is charming. My fam and I enjoy eating here and love that they have outdoor seating. I enjoy their signature salad with different options for protein (salmon, shrimp, chicken, beef). I've had their burger and it will make your eyes roll back in your head. My husband says the chicken with waffles is really good. I'll be holding my wedding vow renewal dinner here. I know it will be delicious and epic.

Brian B.

Yelp
Because of COVID you can't get the entire "normal" experience. However you can eat indoors if you chose to, we opted for outdoors under the heat lamp which was perfectly fine and warm. Indoors didn't look inviting in the dining area ...I'm not sure if it was the 3-6 feet CDV rule but it didn't seem in play and people were too close for comfort for me. Now let's talk food. The crab dip appetizer looked nice BUUUUTTT there seem to be more cream cheese than crab in the dip. It was okay but I've had better at other places and at home when I make it. We ordered simple meals...cheese burger and a steak salad. The burger was a burger and taste fine but had no wow factor to it. The steak salad was just as appealing as the burger. We also ordered the Front Porch Salad without the spiced pecans. It came with the pecans so I couldn't eat it...or maybe I could've if I want to be rushed to the hospital and die. The offered to make another but by that time I was full, note they did not offer or in my opinion India to make another complimentary. That would've been a nice gesture, right? Well at least that is what I'm used too. Overall the service was good. Nothing much more to say but I'm sure you want to know would I give this place a second chance. Unusually the answer is Yes! There's a lot I didn't try and I hear the shrimp are great. So we shall see what happens in the future.

David D.

Yelp
Outstanding restaurant! Service was good, and the food was great! Highly recommended!

Amy M.

Yelp
Good food, nice atmosphere. It's got that "old Victorian house" vibe. Service is adequate but considering the atmosphere, I wish they would have that "southern hospitality " vibe.

Lucille W.

Yelp
We were very disappointed and will not return. We had a mediocre meal with bad service New Year's Eve, when we had hoped for something special. And it was way too expensive for the meal received. When we wrote to the manager the next day we were essentially dismissed as complainers. Not the customer service one would expect from a restaurant such as this.

Brian M.

Yelp
My go to meal in Leonardtown. I have multiple experiences and not one was bad. Amazing food and service. Two thumbs up

El T.

Yelp
Was there this past Friday. Had reservations. It took almost 20 mins to get service once we were seated. The food took forever to arrive and when it did it was bland and just not tasty. For the pricing and all the reviews, I expected better. Our waitress was horrid, never once asked us about refills.

Sheronda M.

Yelp
This was my first experience of the restaurant. First off the history behind the location is amazing! The family had 17 children! Love the aesthetics. I enjoyed the brussel sprouts for appetizer. Done well. Baked crispy with goat cheese and honey. Remarkable. For dinner I had the salmon with kale. I also enjoyed the beer flights. So overall my experience was great!

James N.

Yelp
Can't say enough good things- very friendly staff excellent service . high-quality food !!! Chefs always creating great things with their specials !! I haven't found a bad item or experience yet and It hasn't been for lack of trying!! One of my favorite places!! It is a must stop when I am in the area!!!

Candice H.

Yelp
My sister and I came here looking for a place to eat for brunch. We were able to get seated in the bar area immediately, so there was absolutely no wait time. The building is absolutely beautiful. While the server was getting our drink and food orders, she was a little rude after I said I wanted a Shirley Temple. My sister and I both ordered the Nashville Chicken Sandwich. They were really good but a little too spicy for us, but that's not the restaurants fault by any means. I docked one star because of the server that was waiting on us kept giving us dirty looks every time we asked for something.

Mark H.

Yelp
We had a large party (16) where they set up our own room. Service was great and the food was tasty Southern Maryland cooking.

Dennis M.

Yelp
Met a few work peeps there for dinner. Stated in the bar. Very good selection of beer wine & cocktails. Got our table and perused the menu. It was Wednesday so it was hump day burger day. I chose the breakfast burger with a front porch (extra $). Salad was amazing! Burger was gourmet. Super delicious and the meat was perfectly seasoned. Topped with a medium fried egg, so just a little bit of yolk to taste things up. Didn't do desert this time, but surely will the next. Highly recommended!

Tim T.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch after playing golf at Breton Bay, we sat out in the porch. One thing I thought was a terrific idea is that they take your name a phone number just as taking a reservation and if someone happens to get sick they will call you to let you know. Very safe. I had the burger with bacon and Swiss cheese it was very good as were the French fries. I had an Old Fashion was its bullet rye and it was also very good. My golf partner had the tacos he said there was salmon mixed in with the shrimp something different he had never had before. Also very good.

Joelle J.

Yelp
We had a great experience at The Front Porch on an early Friday evening with our little girls, 1 and 3. Our waitress, Melissa, was fantastic! They were super accommodating to my dietary needs (gluten and dairy free) and helped modify a meal for me. The food was great and we had the best time!

C M.

Yelp
This use to be our go to place for a nice dinner or special occasion without kids. We haven't been in a couple years and were excited to go back. Everything was fine, but compared to the past it was disappointing. The menu seems to have gotten much more casual and we were not impressed with the food. It was ok, but not good and did not feel like a special occasion type meal. My husband got a cheesesteak and had to stop to get unchewable gristle out of his mouth several times. When he pushed away the plate with a pile of disgusting leftovers he found a pool of grease on the table that was on the bottom of the plate. I got the shrimp salad that I have ordered before. This time there was no micro greens or quality lettuce. It was poorly chopped romaine - lots of white/yellow lettuce with stems and balls of lettuce that weren't cut or broken up. The dressing comes in the prepackaged, covered plastic tubs and the dressing was separated from sitting around for too long. The avocado wasn't cut up, just a quarter of avocado that was browning and looked like it may have been cut the day before. Again, it was ok, but it did put a damper on our special occasion dinner. Felt like we could get a better quality sandwich and salad at Panera.

Jlynn W.

Yelp
Beautiful, friendly upscale nice yummy food would go there again It was worth the money grabbed. It was excellent drinks were very good to.

John L.

Yelp
Pleasant evening and a good meal on the porch. IMO the menu was limited and meals closely related. Maybe COVID related. Food was excellent and fresh. Complaints are that the seats at the tables were extremely uncomfortable and not designed for table use. That issue is the only reason I might not return. Our waitress was extremely nice and efficient. Limited beer and alcohol menu is also an issue but is not a stopper. Overall I recommend it as a pleasant evening and a getaway from routine of regular eateries.

Leslie W.

Yelp
Great experience! Will definitely go back. Excellent atmosphere and service. Reilly was great!

Cathleen E.

Yelp
I went to a dinner here with some friends (there was 8 of us) and I ordered a filet mingon, medium well with no horseradish on it. The steak came and when I cut in up, it was basically purple it was so raw. I would have classified it as rare. Plus it also had horseradish on it. I cut up the asparagus because I was going to eat that and the potatoes. My husband went to the waitress and asked her to have the steak fixed. When it was brought back, it was THE EXACT SAME steak and asparagus, cut up exactly as I had cut it up. So they basically took the whole plate, threw it on the grill and brought it back. And it was still not cooked medium well. So it was both undercooked and overcooked at the same time. And what about the horseradish that was on it? Did they rinse it off before the put it on the grill? Needless to say I did not eat it. I just ate asparagus and potatoes, for $29. The waitress gave me a free piece of chocolate cake to make up for it, which was also not great. Not our first time here, but we won't be back here, unfortunately. Never had an experience that's worth the price.

David K.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. A must visit when you are I. The area. The crab cakes did not disappoint.

Dan F.

Yelp
A wonderful place to eat. This big old house is beautiful, clean and very well kept. Staff is friendly and helpful. Best of all, the food is delicious!
