"There’s an increasingly different restaurant model sprouting up around LA, and that’s the service counter where diners order, take a number, and receive plates directly from the kitchen. It’s a way for restaurants to deliver most of the quality and creativity of a full service eatery but expediting the experience (and minimizing front-of-house staff) to keep prices reasonable. The Gables is the newest such quick service-ish experience, opening August 22 with a thoughtful but approachable menu that should cater to Santa Monica’s wide swath of diners." - Matthew Kang

"An all-day neighborhood restaurant called The Gables is coming to Santa Monica this March. When open, the restaurant will be located on Wilshire between Third and Fourth Streets, and operated by a team that includes consulting chef and former Superba and Beacon veteran Vicki Fan Matsusaka; Daniel Boulud’s former restaurant group manager Juan Ramirez, and first-time restaurant owner Kevin Lazan. Expect this Westside restaurant to emphasize a market-driven menu, with all baked goods prepared onsite." - Mona Holmes

I never submit reviews online, but after eating at The Gables I just had to spread the word! I already knew of Vicki Fan from her days at Superba and was excited to taste her new creations... I came by for brunch one day with some friends and we ordered the lemon buttermilk pancake, the yogurt with granola and a classic start breakfast - we were hungry! The staff was attentive and the food came out quickly. Each plate was beautifully arranged, the food was hot, tasty and I left feeling full, but not like I needed to fast for the rest of the day. The fresh squeezed lemon on the pancake and homemade granola were some of my favorite highlights. I loved it so much that I came back soon after to try dinner! Our table ordered the steak frites, meatballs, brass salad, patty melt, salmon, and pasta and each plate was empty by the end of the meal. The fries were crispy and thin, the mint in the salad added a refreshing flavor, and I couldn’t believe the pasta was gluten free - so so good! The salmon was cooked perfectly, the millet underneath the meatballs was a welcome starch, but my favorite had to be the patty melt with its juicy balsamic onions and rye toast - yum! On top of all the deliciousness happening at The Gables, the decor makes you feel like you’ve been welcomed into a super hip artist’s sunny loft studio in Venice. The patio is divine and the artwork, cushions, tile and brass elements are highly covetable and create a sanctuary of cool and comfort. I will be back!

Refreshing, airy, cozy decor. Love the blue and white tile! And the food is amazing. Loved the Waldorf sandwich. Can't wait to come back and try everything else on the menu.

We ordered catering from the gables for our weekend event and this was the best experience with a restaurant ever. The communication with the manager was easy and he was super helpful and friendly. The food was ready for pick-up on point and everything was packed carefully. Unpacking the food, I was blown away by the quality and the presentation of it. Everything looked so appealing and almost like art. The food was incredibly flavorful, healthy and extremely fresh. This was food made with love and a lot of skill. I have never seen prettier sandwiches in my life (not to mention the extraordinary taste, how can a simple chicken sandwich be SO good?). I am not impressed with food easily as I eat out a lot. Highly recommended for catering if you want to serve delicious food that tastes home made and prepared with heart. I never really write reviews but I feel this is 💯 deserved. Thanks for everything and we will order again for our next event!

Everyone needs to go here and support this amazing cafe! I came in feeling down on my luck after a tough 24 hours and their super friendly team picked me up in no time! They're really allergy friendly - I'm gluten and dairy free. They have oat milk, too! Huge fan. Great avocado toast. I'm telling all my friends!

So stumped by all the 5-star reviews. Caveat: one visit only (and I would not go back) Our brunch: - Loud (stupid loud) - Oversized: PB & J French Toast - Undersized: Pressed Burrito - Under seasoned, verging on bland: both - Coffee: good color, but sour note - Fresh OJ: best thing we had The Burrito was 85% bland steamed kale and severely overcooked egg (think of a brown omelette), with not even 2oz. of overcooked diced chorizo and a tiny bit of cheddar. The most puzzling thing of all is that it was served with a tasty hot sauce, but the heat level was so hot that it obliterated all of the subtle flavors in the burrito. The PB&J French Toast was served in the most aesthetically unpleasant way. It appeared as if brioche was sliced lengthwise, and a giant slab slapped on the plate. It was also an unrelenting plate of brown on brown. The peanut butter seemed nearly unsalted and lacked flavor. The dish was described with pecans and came with peanuts. The jam was delicious, but sparse. Halfway through our meal, I looked at my dining companion and said, there's about 50 cents of ingredients on my plate, and they failed to elevate them. His reply: mine, too. Service was pleasant but disorganized at the front. Tables were crowded, chairs in the aisle meant people would bump you often. Hard surface everywhere = really loud restaurant. There is a public parking garage behind the restaurant with a certain time allotted for free (first hour, perhaps longer?)

The salmon? It was perfect. It fell apart over crispy fried potatoes and juicy, fresh tomatoes. The food is the real deal. They source from the farmers market down the street... It makes sense. It's the only way the tomatoes could taste so good.

I ordered a patty melt and it was greasy and undercooked for the price . However, the staff was very accommodating and providing a complimentary very tasty kale Caesar salad with chicken. The ambience is beautiful and tastefully done. Food is ok.
