The Best Hotels in the United Kingdom: 2022 Readers’ Choice Awards

"The only hotel in Britain where you can wallow in naturally heated mineral water from Bath’s famous underground springs, this magnificent 18th-century Georgian mansion transforms into an equally magnificent modern hotel on the inside. Walking in is like stepping from the past directly into the future. But in the spa, which takes its design inspiration from the Romans who founded Bath, a toga wouldn’t look out of place among the columns and mosaics. The Gainsborough is a true luxury hotel, offering numerous spa treatments and a wealth of fine dining options, and beautifully unadorned Georgian interiors allow the towering ceilings and massive windows to speak for themselves. The rooms are decorated in restful blues and browns, boasting big beds and luxury toiletries, but if you really want to splash out—ahem—bag one of the three Bath Spa suites, where tubs have three taps: hot, cold, and natural thermal water." - Ramsay Short

The Gainsborough Bath Spa

"How did it strike you on arrival?A magnificent 18th-century Georgian mansion from the outside transforms into a magnificent modern hotel on the inside. Walking in is like stepping from the past directly into the future. Knowing what's to come—spa treatments at the only hotel in the UK with direct access to naturally heated spring water from Bath's famous ancient underground springs—makes it even more enticing. What’s the crowd like? This is for those with deep pockets, fetishes for historic England, and a desire to experience some of the most luxurious pampering available in the UK. There are a ton of high end travelers from Southeast Asia and beyond, lots of lovers here for romantic trips and intimate proposals, and guests simply here to experience spa treatments to die for, famous for healing properties utilized by the Romans way back when. This is a luxury hotel that does not fudge on the details, everyone here knows and expects what they're paying for. The good stuff: Tell us about the rooms. The rooms are smart, decorated in duck-egg blue and gold with large comfortable double beds after a 2015 refurbishment, all in different shapes and sizes. The best thing about them might just be the elegant Georgian walls, uncluttered by bad art, and the massive windows and towering ceilings, creating a feeling of space. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?The Queen sized bed is big enough, the mattress firm and the pillows plentiful. As you'd expect all the sheets are soft as lambs wool. Sleep came easily. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that worth a mention?Complimentary mini-bars, like the one here, always go down well. The Nespresso coffee machine is fantastic, always better than instant sachets, and the climate control panel was easily navigable—something that may seem minor but when those panels are complicated they never fail to annoy. Best of all though was the Roberts Radio, a modern wireless inside with perfect classic looks on the outside. That's what goes in my bag first if I was the thieving type. Oh and all the Asprey toiletries. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.Underfloor heating in the bathroom was a treat. The Asprey branded products were plentiful and soft on the skin, as you'd expect from a hotel with an incredible spa. Marble floors, a freestanding bath and generous full size mirror alongside the supersized bathrobes are all big pluses. Room service: Worth it?Room service is quick with a menu packed with comfort food, which after a session at the spa and a desire to get your calorie intake back up. Even cooler is the fact that I could order the signature Gainsborough cheese & bacon burger with perfect fries as if it was being served in the restaurant. Not cheap at £24, but large and so so good. Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why?The spa therapist gets my vote. The 45-minute aqua massage I was given in the collonaded bathing pool beat almost any other massage I've ever had. My body twisted and glided in the mineral rich and naturally heated water supported by an expert who manipulated my spine, loosened my hips and propelled me, arms outstretched, through the water. Truly incredible. Anything stand out about other services and features? The spa and treatments as above. This is after all what you come here for. It makes a big difference too that the Gainsborough's treatment rooms are uncluttered by the usual detritus of faux serenity in most spas, there are no Balinese lanterns and the like, just simple, softly lit limestone and a beautiful atrium right in the centre. Plus the fine dining restaurant headed up by Dan Moon is well worth a visit, its menu using fresh, seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. Bottom line: worth it?The spa treatments, comfort and the fact that it really does live up to its luxury billing makes the Gainsborough most definitely somewhere to remember." - Ramsay Short

The Gainsborough Bath Spa (Bath, UK) 2 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Not much changes in Bath. It’s been one of England’s favorite holiday destinations for about two thousand years, and it’s well known for its architectural history, especially its famous Georgian crescents. But what’s old is new again; on the site of a 19th-century hospital, itself built atop a forgotten Roman-era bath, is the Gainsborough Bath Spa. After a very thorough (and architecturally sensitive) renovation, it’s by some distance the most luxurious lodging in town." - Tablet Hotels

The Gainsborough | Best places to stay in Bath

"Bath has been known as a spa town since the 1st century AD, when the Romans revelled in its natural hot springs. But where to take the water today? The splendid Roman Baths are sadly not open to swimmers, and the Thermae Bath Spa is notoriously busy on weekends and holidays. Instead, stay at this luxurious Palladian townhouse. It’s crowning glory is a spa that taps into the city’s thermal waters, just as the Romans did, and includes pools, saunas and a steam room, all currently exclusively for guest use. Once you’ve got your kit back on, the rest of the hotel is a rather elegant affair. Rooms are pleasingly pared-back and modern, painted in cool blues and sporting big beds and sweeping views of the city. The Bath Spa rooms are an extra treat, with rolltop baths to luxuriate in if you haven’t quite done enough relaxing of a day. You’re in the centre of Roman Bath here (which is happily also the city centre today), next to the Thermae Bath Spa and around the corner from the Roman Baths. Milsom Street, Bath’s best address for shopping, is also close by. " - Sian Lewis

This was a long-awaited family trip, delayed by the pandemic. The accommodations were lovely, and the room layout suited our family of five well. Concierge recommendations for dining options were excellent.|The Spa was beautiful and restorative. |We appreciated the thoughtful gifts left in our room to help us celebrate our anniversary and our children's recent graduations.|The Spa is centrally located, so navigating all the sights in Bath was a breeze.

We had a lovely stay at the Gainsborough. The staff that we dealt with were great and helpful. The rooms were clean and tidy and the bed I have to say was great. I just think for a 5 star just some of the small details were missing like the room was nice but it’s wasn’t wow in what I’d expect in a 5* hotel of this quality. The facilities are nice but the hours are not great so we paid for a massage to combine the two and so we could use the spa at times that suited us. The only negative I really felt was the price for breakfast, £40 pp is extortionate no matter how nice it may be. Also found it weird you couldn’t have your phone but some people did have their phones in the spa which was annoying. I’d definitely recommend to friend and family. I’m just being over picky on the wow factor

I was splurging on something special for myself and was so excited to stay at this hotel. My excitement didn't last long.||Check-in took quite a while, not because there was anyone in front of me, but because there were issues with my reservation. When I arrived, I was told I had two reservations, and even though I had canceled one and had proof of my cancelation request from over a month before, the manager acted as though they were doing me a favor to cancel the second reservation without charge. Then I was told that even though my reservation was supposed to be pre-paid, they had never charged me. I then had to spend time contacting my credit card company to see if I had been charged. It turned out I had not due to some computer error with the hotel. When I mentioned that the exchange rate had changed significantly since I was supposed to be charged, no one seemed to care. ||When I finally got to my room, I realized they had put me right next to the elevator, when I looked out the window, I was greeted with a view of some rusting receptacle on a roof (the view out the other window was ok), the bathroom vanity had peeling paint, the bathtub had debris in it, and there was an area in the room where my foot stuck to the carpet because they had used adhesive to repair a section of the carpet. I really hope it was the worst room in the category (which wasn't the lowest), because I can't imagine paying that price for a room that's even more worn!||The next morning when I went to order room service for breakfast. (which for me is one of the major perks of a nice hotel), I discovered that while they do offer room service, they don't offer room service for breakfast. Moreover, while a courtyard is mentioned in more than one place on their website, when I asked the front desk where I could sit outside to read, I was told there was nowhere in the hotel to do that.||The spa was beautiful, and I'm sure it would be an enjoyable and relaxing experience when it isn't overcrowand and rather loud. I can also say the people in spa reception were really lovely, and the bed in the room was quite comfortable with very nice linens. I also appreciated the complimentary water and beverages in the mini fridge, although I do wish they had been replenished at least once over my multi-night stay.

Booked for a romantic weekend in bath. Location is great, although the hotel has no onsite car parking and wanted to charge £40 a night. Much better to stay in public car park nearby. ||The room was small and very average and tired - not what I was expecting for the price. The service was average - certainly not 5 stars. ||When checking out “discretionary “ service charges were added to the bill on top of tips for any service- it felt more like extortion as a queue of people behind to check out meant it was not practical to dispute the bill at that point. ||The spa is lovely, though access is limited and busy unless additional payment made. Breakfast is an insane £40 - go to one of the amazing cafes nearby. ||Overall there are better place in bath for better values

I booked the Gainsborough Spa Suite for our 3rd Wedding Anniversary. The room was fantastic and the facilities of the Spa were perfect! All the staff we interacted with were really kind and helpful. Especially to the mixologist Chris at the bar. He was so passionate about his job and made our evening!||We had complimentary cheese box and wine with our room which were excellent if you liked those things, we however didn’t so these would be gifted to family. A breakfast would have better alternative, which I’m amazed wasn’t included with booking their most expensive suite.||Unless I missed it during the booking, I only discovered during check in we had complimentary unlimited access to the Spa outside of the normal 2 scheduled slots to the rest of hotel guests. This was the highlight of the trip! I would have arrived earlier had I known! Although I may have spent the entire trip in there haha.||The downsides, which they are minor however when paying £600 for a room for the night, they were worth mentioning.||The ambient sounds from outside were really disruptive for the early morning. I was awoken at 6:30am by the sound of a lorry idling outside the hotel, I’m guessing it was a delivery. I appreciate the historical architecture of the building however be mindful you will hear every and all sounds outside the hotel from the room. Including the slamming of the fire doors in the suites from downstairs. ||Also be cautious of the hidden services fees. I did not realise that each time you used the bars, the drinks prices are not inclusive of service fees which will be added to your checkout bill. Furthermore, 6 drinks in total 2 of which were soft drinks came to a total of £115 with fees. ||I would book again, perhaps not the most expensive suite but for the spa facilities as they were exceptional!||Thank you for making our anniversary special.

Just got back from a spa package which included breakfast a cream tea and either a facial or massage in the spa and. Use of facilities . It was fabulous from start to finish . The spa area is calm , quiet and relaxing . Zach and Hannah the therapist are amazing . I had zach for a massage . He is polite , friendly and a true professional who loves his craft . My daughter had Hannah again she came out with only great comments and feeling relaxed . We would defiantly ask for them again . The bedroom was clean and very comfortable . Large bath shower with Elemis products . Breakfast was great this is included . |Only one negative we would have liked to use the spa facilities the next day as residents of the hotel however you would need to pay £ 70 each . You can use it from 8 to 10 but that’s over the breakfast period . £70 is steep and a little annoying seeing as you’ve spent quite a decent amount of money . Maybe a little less and we might have . done it . That’s the only negative and it’s not like the spa area is busy it wasn’t which again we enjoyed

Hotel is in a great location for accessing the centre. Staff were friendly. Room was nice with lovely decor and the bed was very comfy. ||However a few issues which we felt made the stay not as enjoyable. ||1. We arrived to be told they needed to charge us £100. This can then be used against any additional spending in the hotel or it is then refunded at the end of the stay if no issues. This was not made clear when we made the booking. We’ve stayed in lots of 5 star hotels before and never had to do this. ||Interestingly when we arrived there were a few other guests complaining about various issues which slightly dampened the arrival. ||2. The spa times for guests are restricted to 8am - 10am or 7pm - 9pm. Again never had this with spa hotels before. You could pay an additional £70 per person or have a very over priced treatment which would then allow you to use the spa when you wanted. Those times are typically when you might want to have breakfast or supper so not ideal. The spa was lovely but due to the restricted times was then really busy and spoilt the relaxed experience. ||3. We wanted to have a drink at the hotel bar but there was no member of staff to serve us and we waited quite a while before deciding against it. Luckily being in the centre of Bath we had lots of choice for a drink and food.

Absolutely amazing stay – highly recommended! We stayed at this hotel from July 22 to 24 and had an absolutely wonderful experience. The staff were incredibly friendly, helpful, and professional from the moment we arrived. The room was clean, comfortable, and beautifully presented. The thermal pool was fantastic — very relaxing and perfect for unwinding. It was also a lovely surprise to receive a complimentary gift from the hotel, which made us feel even more welcomed. Everything was well-organized, and the atmosphere was calm and peaceful. The location is excellent and close to everything we needed. We would recommend this place 200% and will definitely return. Thank you for making our stay so special!

Yelp
Cute spot in Bath. We liked the location and the place has a lot of charm. The highlight are the baths, on site, on the bottom floor. They are very nice and the facility is clean. Not nearly enough chairs, however. The restaurant was a bit hit and miss, but we enjoyed a dish they had for dinner so much that we went back a second night. The staff for dinner was not extremely refined but excellent, just the same. Breakfast was very good, but the service was confused was uneven. We enjoyed an evening in the bar with great drinks and conversation. This is, overall, a great choice in Bath

Yelp
Located perfectly in Bath, our room was lovely and clean. It came with drinks in the mini fridge & the bed & pillows were comfortable. We used the spa; the pools were wonderful & relaxing. It was a very pleasant stay. We did have a lot of stairs & halls to get around the hotel but there is no way around the fact part of the hotel goes under the road.

Yelp
The Gainsborough Bath Spa and Hotel is definitely a luxury hotel when staying in Bath. It's totally worth it based on the perks of the spa area and the rooms, service, and dining were fabulous. The location of this hotel is prime! Bath is already a small enough city and easy to navigate by walking, but this hotels location makes all of this even easier as it's closer to the major restaurants, shopping, and Roman bath house in the area. Didn't need a taxi or anything while in Bath which made me appreciate the location. The service at this hotel overall is 5 stars. Everyone working the front desk and helping with the baggage we're a gem! Nice and helpful people, taking your bags, making you feel welcomed, providing maps, and not making us seem a burden with all of our questions on where to go. The restaurant staff were also friendly and in what limited interactions we had with the cleaning crew, nice ladies. The spa staff are also 10/10. Front desk gals were welcoming and the masseuses were experts! That brings me to the spa. The thermal water pools were phenomenal and much more exclusive then the wasting your time and money at the famous Roman bath. Here at this hotel it's much less crowded and very relaxing. Couldn't believe the amenities! Two small thermal pools, a larger one (all downstairs and indoors), sauna, changing rooms, relaxation rooms, ice therapy room, you name it they had it. Fabulous. Also a bonus staying here as there are specialized hours for just hotel guests only in this spa area too, times when the public can't book to come. But again, we were there on weekdays between 9am-12pm and it really wasn't busy, I'm sure it picks up a bit on the weekends. I had two spa massages here and the masseuses were fabulous and real professionals, some of the best full body massages I've ever had. Pricing again was comparable and fair for all that you have access to and the great staff. Can't stop raving about this hotel. It was perfection. No views per say but everything else was great. Nice size bed rooms and large bath. Comfortable beds. The food for room service and at the breakfast restaurant were pretty good for hotel food. Again, staff were lovely and everyone was helpful making you feel that your business was appreciated. I will definitely always stay here when visiting Bath.

Yelp
Okay I am giving 5 stars to the hotel, the staff and especially Stewart who went above and beyond to help us during our stay. He booked the best Italian restaurant for us. Gave us the best tips to where to go around and the short cuts. Got us the best deal for a taxi to get to the airport. Every time I drop something with him just to hold it for me so I can rake it to the room later he runs in and out it in my room. Such a sweetheart that made us smile every time we saw him. Loved the room and how clean it was. The bed is a bit small for two people ( myself and my daughter) but we managed without me falling down lol. I move a lot so yes it happened before in a different hotel I ended up falling down. We went to the spa and it was amazing experience as well we got the scrub and massages. I normally don't feel comfortable with a gentleman massaging me. I only went to females masseuse all my adult life and one make physical therapist. So when I booked our appointment I forget to mention we want ladies thinking it would be ladies only. So we walked into our appointment and the beautiful reception welcomed us with a smile and paperworks while we were sipping on delicious juice. Then she said there is a male and a female masseuse. Both my daughter and I looked at each other and I said I will take the male but I really wanted to cancel on the spot with fully paying as it's my fault. But I went ahead with Shausha I hope I didn't spell his name wrong. The most polite respectful human being. I was nervous at first and once he did the scrubs and saw how professional and polite he was I relaxed. So when my massage started I fell a sleep and started snoring lol. We did talked for like 40 mins out of the 2 hours and he just made me laugh like crazy. He didn't start talking until I started talking and then he apologised if he talked to much in my relaxing time when I was the one starting the conversations lol. So to his boss if you are reading this please keep him happy at his work so he never leaves as I will be back to get massages by him next time I am in bath. Now let's talk about the actual Bath of the hotel. The most relaxing place I have been. I have been to a different place in bath city and it was out of control how many people were cramped in there but not in this one. (Even in Iceland it was overcrowded and overwhelming even tho we were staying there so we weren't part of the public experience) The first one there one around 8 of us with literally our own spots so I didn't feel like awkward or anything. The next day there was like 4 of us and felt we have the place to ourselves. The only recommendation is that they need to dry the water on the floor more frequently as my daughter did end up falling and bruising her him from a paddle of water that wasn't easy to be seen. I am so glad she didn't break bones or hit her head. Now the thing that really creeped me out as well creeped my daughter out is one of the front desk or receptionist at the hotel. The most creepy man that he couldn't take his eyes off our females upper body parts. I truly felt like slapping him across the face. Sadly I didn't get his name but I am sure if the manager get in touch with me I can tell them exactly who he was. But this guy didn't effect our views of the hotel as it's him as individual not as a biz. Overall it's one of the best hotels I have stayed at while traveling the world. So yes book it and enjoy the stay.

Yelp
I booked a room at this hotel, spending a huge part of my salary, with only one purpose: taking photos in the beautiful pool that is advertised in their website photos. Within a few days it became clear that the pool was only available with pre-booking (not something I have ever experienced with any other hotel pool). When I pursued that pre-booking it became clear that the pool was not going to be available at all in the late evenings (my only available times). I wrote to explain all of this and to cancel my booking. It was still weeks before my stay, but they denied a refund. They did offer a voucher for a future stay, but I explained that this is the kind of travel I am only able to do once every few years. In the end I wasted hours of email and lost over $400 dollars. I wish that the refund policy was more customer friendly. That being said, they worked very hard to answer all of my emails, and to reach out to me. One of them even reached out all the way from the Netherlands to speak with me. I don't think I'll ever have the chance to use it, but they promised me a voucher, and they did come through and deliver that to me. If I'm ever able to stay at the hotel I will update this review again.

Yelp
A wonderful hotel with concierge service that was impeccable. Stewart who is head concierge was beyond helpful with all our arrangements, his suggestions for dining were spot on. He suggested Clayton's Kitchen for lunch and to have the "Sunday roast " which is a customary meal served on Sunday. It was unbelievable and you can check my review. He also suggested several dining spots and all were exceptional. We asked him for suggestions for our next trip to London which he was happy to provide. Everyone was accommodating and friendly with a professional response to any request or question. The room was nice and more than adequate for our needs. Clean and modern with comfortable beds and top of the line linens and towels. Now to the best part of this hotel is the Roman Spa located within the hotel. The mineral pool with its massage jets and bubble seats will relieve any tension you may have when entering. The sauna and steam rooms are equally well appointed but use for hotel guest are limited to specific times while additional 3 hour locks can be purchased for 70 pounds per person. We did not have the time for a massage but will definitely plan our time there to take advantage of this service next time we are there. This will be our must go spot whenever visiting England for relaxation and pampering. The only reason i did give this hotel a five star rating was due to the limited availability of the mineral pool for hotel guest which I felt should be complimentary for guests and not restricted to a few limited hours per day without charge.

Yelp
Absolute bliss! Stayed here for 3 nights and absolutely loved it. Best hotel experience ever, with staff genuinely friendly, interested and helpful. Spa facilities are top of the bill (better than the Thermae across the street).

Yelp
Underwhelming experience. The spa services were terrible. Between freezing and feeling terrible about the check in or having to walk over two miles to park, this was a horrible start to our vacation. The staff was not very accommodating and the hotel genuinely lacked the amenities one would expect given the price point.

Lily V.

Yelp
Staff in the Spa Village Bath was extremely rude and discriminating; hotel management refused to do anything about it. If you read the recent reviews here, you would have seen many people complaining about rude services, especially from the spa staff. I booked a massage treatment over the phone with them where they confirmed that I could use the spa facilities and did not ask whether I'm a hotel guest or not. So I spent £90 on train tickets to get from London to Bath for this massage. When I arrived, I was rushed into the massage room, where this male masseur spent 5 minutes explaining how he will massage different parts of my body and another 5 minutes explaining the different oils. A 50-min massage turned into only 40 min. He was rude and rushed me to take off my clothes and bra in front of him, which was odd to me as a shy Asian woman. When I finished my massage, he poured me a glass of tap water from the sink where he washed his hands and rushed me out of the room to make payment. While I noticed everyone else was offered drinks (and the website offered "welcome drink and post treatment herbal tea"), nobody offered me anything as I was just sitting and waiting for 10 minutes until someone came with a POS machine. They first asked to charge me £25 extra from the rates discussed on the phone because I'm not a hotel guest. I agreed to pay the fee but looked up again on the website that I should also receive a "personalised aromatherapy blending session" which I didn't. The manager Mariana then rushed one of the staff to do it to me while she acted annoyed. Nobody at the spa showed me around where to go after my payment. To get access to the thermal spa facilities, they asked me to put my phone in a pouch so that I can't use it. However, I noticed that they did not ask anyone else to do this except me. When I questioned, the manager Mariana was extremely condescending and said if I did not comply, she would have to ask me to leave. The whole experience was bizarre because there was no level of friendliness or professionalism that you would expect from a spa at a 5-star hotel with glowing 4.6-star rating on Google. After spending 3 hours and £90 on a train from London to Bath and £175 on a 40-min below-average massage, I left the hotel Gainsborough in total disappointment and made my way back to London. The general hotel manager promised to contact me the following day but when I rang him (Mark), his secretary picked up and said he's too busy to talk. Save yourself time and avoid this experience! There are better services elsewhere.

Ann C.

Yelp
They may usually be good but when we arrived there was an incident that they said was beyond their control which resulted in them clearing everyone out of the spa and closing it until the next day. Due to our schedule we could not go into the spa the next day so the very reason we booked and stayed at this hotel was for the use of the spa. They apologized but they didn't offer any kind of reimbursement or compensation which was unacceptable.

Yelp
Awesome hotel and Spa. We really enjoyed our stay... I am pregnant visiting London for a week. The spa was a very well needed break to relax and massage my very swollen legs/ankles/feet . I only used the main large pool given that the temperature is safe for pregnant women (I asked my doctor, please do so before you decide anything). I was even more precious and decided to just be max 5 min in the pool be out or just my feet in for 5-10 min and then swim again for no more than 5 min

Yelp
My favorite hotel when visiting Bath. Comfortable bed and walking distance to train station. Highly recommended.

Yelp
One of the best hotel experiences I have had. The hotel is stunning and impeccable. The staff is very accommodating and helpful. The spa experience was incredibly relaxing and wonderful. This place had the best room service I have ever had. I have a gluten allergy and they were able to accommodate perfectly. Highly recommend staying here and or using the spa!

Yelp
Amazing staff, great location, clean and comfortable rooms AND a relaxing spa?? What's not to love?? My husband and I had a fabulous time at this quaint hotel in Bath. In our whirlwind trip to Europe - 4 countries in 2 weeks, it was a breath of fresh air to visit the wonderful small town of Bath and to spend an evening at this cute hotel and spa! Bath itself has a ton of things to do and is like a novel come to life! The Abbey is the center of it all, great shopping, the Roman Baths, the Pump Room, wonderful views and this great hotel to put the cherry on top! I wish we got to spend more than one night there! The hotel has been recently renovated and you can smell the freshness of it. The staff was extremely attentive from the moment we checked in until the moment we left. It's amazing how they knew us by name every time we walked through the lobby! WOW! Our luggage was brought to our room for us and when we walked in they had the temperature set and classical music playing. =) I wish I had taken a photo of the room, it was divinely decorated and I especially loved the heated bathroom floor! With a hotel stay, you also get to visit the spa! We opted to try them out after a full afternoon of exploring the Roman Baths (which is a must do if you come to Bath!) and having lunch at the Pump Room (i recommend the afternoon tea- yummy!). There are a few different pools, a sauna room and an ice room. The main pool has some massaging features that will totally relax and tenderize you. There are also some showers in the spa itself if you wanted to rinse off before heading to another pool or room. The locker room was clean and had all the amenities you would need incase you had to be somewhere right after and didn't have a room at the hotel. If I lived in Bath, I would definitely take advantage of this spa and get a membership for it! This was THE best night sleep I've ever had! The bed was perfect and the blackout curtains let me sleep in a bit. We had breakfast at the restaurant downstairs before leaving and I was stuffed from the traditional English breakfast! It was delicious and the restaurant got pretty crowded so I would suggest going a little early. All in all, I would definitely recommend this hotel and we will be back for another stay!

Yelp
Fantastic hotel. Wonderful service. Toiletries are the same they give you at the Ritz Carltons. Location is super. The valet parking is £38; if too much, there's a nearby parking that charges £14 for 24 hours. Open anytime. The Bath Village at the hotel is marvelous. Guests can use it for free between 7-10 am and from 1900-2100 on Saturdays and it offers cold pool warm pool hot pool steam sauna and some big jet for a neck massage. You should not miss this. The breakfast that we bought was included in the price and was continental plus eggs and freshly squeezed juices. Freshly baked pastries. Fresh butter. I think I gained 10 pounds in one sitting. I wish I would have stayed longer. This is a fabulous place to stay, relax, eat, and inside historic Bath.

Yelp
We loved our two days at this amazing hotel and spa! Its central location is perfect. The hotel is new, beautifully decorated, and filled with extra touches that one expects from a 5-star facility. Food is expertly prepared and presented, and it is delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our full English breakfast every morning! The finest points of the Gainsborough are the spa and the staff. Surely, this is the most beautiful and luxurious spa anywhere. The different options of alternating hot, warm, cool and cold provide an experience unlike anything we've ever enjoyed. After a full day of touring, walking, and shopping, the warm waters in the pool and the massaging jets were absolutely fabulous! The finest gems in the crown of this hotel belong to the staff! We've stayed in many very fine hotels, but we must say that we have NEVER enjoyed a higher level of excellent service! Each and every member of staff was genuinely friendly, kind, well mannered, and conscientious. It is evident that they truly are committed to doing everything in their power to help ensure that each guest has an incredibly fine stay at this hotel ! Brian and his staff treated our large group as if we were royalty from the minute we arrived until we drove away (what a marvelous send off!). Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer. We'll be back!

Yelp
I loved this hotel. I loved the location, the spa, the inside, the room, etc. The only part that wasn't spectacular, and is holding them back from 5 full stars, is the food. Sometimes when you try so hard to be upscale and make everything look nice or be over the top, the actual taste of the food gets lost in translation, and I feel like that's what is happening with their in-house restaurant. I had dinner there our first night in Bath and wasn't overly impressed. I think I spent 50 pounds on sea bass that had flowers on it and some puree... it wasn't the best sea bass I've ever had though it was certainly the most expensive. The included breakfast was better... they had fresh fruits and porridge or yogurt as well as a full english breakfast and other options. We were pleased with the breakfast overall and it was included in our room charge. Still, everything else was so amazing that they can easily be forgiven. Plus it's so centrally located in Bath that you can walk 5 feet around the corner in either direction and find dozens of places to eat. Our room was lovely and spacious. It was well decorated and very classy. The bathroom had heated tile on the floors and it was fabulous. I feel like I need that in my life in every bathroom now. Haha. I've been ruined! As mentioned before, the hotel is centrally located and close to everything. It's a brief 5-10 minute walk to the Roman Baths, The Pump Room and the Bath Abbey. It's about 5-10 minutes to the train station and literally only 2-3 minutes from dozens of places to shop and eat. My favorite aspect of the hotel was the spa. We only stayed here two nights but you can bet I used the spa both nights. It is based on the old roman spa makeup that makes this city famous. So the spa is structured in such a way so that you do a complete circuit. You'll start in a smaller pool off to the side that is something like 70 degrees or so - filled with the natural Bath spring waters that are automatically hot on their own that makes the place famous. You soak there for 10 minutes or so to adjust your body. Then you move on to another smaller pool located just beside this one off the main pool that is about 10-15 degrees hotter and soak for another 10 minutes. Afterwards you are supposed to rinse yourself off using circular motions to help with circulation in the shower located in the pool room. Then you move into the sauna area where they have a typical sauna, an infrared one for really achey muscles (I used this one and it was great) or a steam room which has some sort of eucalyptus stuff in the steam. You sit in there for another 10-15 minutes and finish up by going into their lavender ice area with a neat lions head that is constantly spitting ice into a large basin where you grab handfuls and rub them all over your body to close your open pores. You rinse off and then go float for a good 20-30 minutes in the large main pool that has areas with water neck massages and bubbling seats. The spa is open to hotel guests from 7-9am and 8-10pm daily and I spent 2 hours there each night. It is beautifully done and the nicest pool/spa I've ever seen in any hotel. Staff were very friendly and welcoming, offering tours and showing where the amenities were in the locker rooms as well as walking you around and explaining how to use the spa properly. They had lavender infused water and warm chocolate for antioxidants that you could sip on after the sauna if needed. The fist night I did the spa alone but hubs came the second night and he absolutely loved it. We commented later when we checked out and moved to another hotel that we missed this place. We would certainly come back. It was one of our favorite stays during our 10 day European adventure. Great location, great rooms, great staff, great spa. It's a win!

Yelp
I stayed at The Gainsborough Bath on my recent trip to England and let me say it was fabulous. From the moment my friends and I checked in we were made to feel special. In the room, they actually say, help yourself to the complimentary snacks! Complimentary, as in, no charge. The room was comfortable and there was plenty of room. The highlight is the spa. Wonderful pool, a warm and hot spa, saunas and the lion with ice chips shooting out his mouth is the perfect touch after the sauna. I loved the faucets shooting water down on my back in the pool. Just the thing to loosen you up for a treatment . Valeria gave me a massage that was so different from the usual ones I get. I will tell you I regularly get 2 massages a month so I'm getting to be a fairly good judge. Thanks Valeria. As an aside, I have been a widow for 2+years. Sometimes it can feel odd doing things alone such as enjoying a pool by yourself. I didn't feel that at all. Truthfully, I felt blessed. How lucky am I to have this amazing experience?! Staying at the a Gainsborough was an experience I will never forget. If you have the opportunity, don't miss it.

Yelp
Wow my wife and I have so many good things to say about both the hotel and the service. We have stayed in many hotels, including a number of luxury hotels and the service here was hands down the best yet! Some of the highlights were the staffs willingness to help us find and map out sights that we would enjoy. They also got dinner reservations for us at a booked restaurant! When we were ready to leave they had all of our things already in the trunk of the car, along with bottles of water and snacks for the journey back to London. They didn't just leave it at that, they also wanted to make sure that our drive home would be enjoyable so they gave some tips of where we could stop on the way home. The hotel is new, modern and very comfortable. We especially enjoyed the spa where there are many geothermal pools, a steam room, sauna and many other fun amenities. This hotel is in an amazing historical location, they have top notch service and a beautiful hotel. What more could you want!!!

Yelp
Our first stay at The Gainsborough was this week, and hopefully it will not be our last! The staff were kind, helpful and just totally excellent service everywhere. We did the book direct benefit and got our complimentary massage and took advantage of the 20% off in the spa to book another one so both my husband I could have a treatment. We "took the waters" beforehand, and the entire spa experience was also just great. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Wonderful to work with, some of the best customer service I have ever experienced. Would definitely stay here in the future! Willing to work with customers in difficult situations and understanding to all clients. We will be back to this beautiful hotel!

Yelp
Arrived exhausted after many hours driving, to a suite that smelt of dead rat. After housekeeping determined it came from air vents, we were told they couldn't do anything until the next day. Upon further pushing they said they could offer 1 small room only for the night but there were 2 of us planning on being in separate beds/rooms in the suite we had booked. Had to continue pushing and negotiating for another 90 minutes to get a second tiny room. Appalling service in restaurant/bar the next night, taking about 90 minutes for a cheese plate. Upon check out they tried to charge us full rate and breakfast, even though breakfast was included. The stench in the room was poorly handled, management of this place make John Cleese in Fawlty Towers look like a professional. Consistent and shameful lack of professionalism, maturity, customer service. Hotel senior managers should be fired and all staff need to be trained in customer service, quality and how to respond when things go wrong.

Yelp
Perfection - on a whole other level... My partner and I are into our weekend breaks. We, almost unfortunately, have very high standards and taste. We chanced upon this hotel, liking it for its location within Bath and thermal spa. Being our first visit to Bath, we were more focused on wanting to explore therefore the hotel we would choose was not a vital ingredient in our trip. Shocked, we were, to have stumbled upon the best hotel we have EVER BEEN TO! On arrival, we were greeted at the entrance by a gentleman who was mid flow in checking out customers (we only then realised that we were fools for arriving at 11am). This did not phase him however and he politely excused the delay in looking after us while he finished his service with the other guests. Shortly after, we had a valet service organised and our bags and garments taken to the side (not in the least nerved at our inconvenient arrival time). We were then free to roam before we would return for our check in. - I must say now that when my car was received at the end of the trip, I had two bottles of water and delicious mints for my journey home! I had chosen a very standard room, of the smallest size yet this room was so beautifully cleaned and well designed with tasteful extras that it left us wondering how much better it can get! Not often that the cheapest and most basic of room options turns out to be just as pleasing and beyond worth the price paid. There was a nespresso machine, complimentary fridge contents and a bottle of champagne for us having booked through the website rather then a third party (a deal they had going at the time). The spa was underground. It was honestly not not the best spa I have been to (I feel it almost unfair to Gainsborough saying that as I compare them to places of higher budget) but that is beside the point. It was again very thoughtful/beautifull with its changing room, clean and fully functioning as well as the perk of a thermal pool experience. I unfortunately did not have any treatments therefore cannot comment on them yet the facilities for the treatments (for instance a two person package room) looked desirable. We had our pre drinks at the small bar where the charismatic bar man was 'working the crowd' well and mixing up some delicious cocktails! Breakfast was a big show of the standard of food served and I cannot wait to try the lunch and dinner menu on my return visits. Gainsborough hotel is a place where the service is delivered with pride. All employees of Gainsborough are refreshingly dedicated to their job. The details are well thought out and, as a guest, you are truly given an exceptional experience - as anyone should when paying to stay anywhere but in your home. I will be returning whenever I can - it is a luxurious yet affordable escape that I am so pleased to have found.

Yelp
Excellent from start to finish! What an amazing experience! Bath is a fantastic city that should be on everyone's list and staying at this hotel would only enhance the experience. Everyone is very friendly without being over the top. The hotel is brand new and the spa is a must! You really get to relax. There is even a description in what order to use the hamam/sauna and pool. Restaurant modern and trendy with good food! Overall a great stay and would love to go back!

Yelp
Fabulous Spa.. we spent the afternoon indulging ourselves. Hot pool, massage and more hot pools, sauna and steam room. Fortified with a delicious hot chocolate. Definitely want to do this again. It's a lovely place.

Yelp
I would say this hotel is on par with Vegas hotels, but that would be an understatement. From the time you arrive to the time you check out, the staff at The Gainsborough are there to assist you every step of the way. Personally, I look for that certain type of customer service in hotels. The greeting, if they provide complementary services, streamline processes for checking in and out, how they set the stage for you, making your visit memorable, and the big one, going above and beyond. I mean, how often do you get a tour of the hotel by a manager?! Brian provided a tour of the lobby, bar, restaurant, lounge, spa, and personally escorted me to my room with the luggage already inside. THAT, is service! Thank you so much Brian! The room I stayed in greeted me instantly with classical music and in front of me (at the desk) was a complementary bottle of champagne and fresh strawberries! The vaulted ceiling, tall windows with thick drapes that cover from the ceiling to the floor blew me away! The bathroom has a heated towel rack and heated floor tiles with 2 robes hanging behind the door. If you are ever able to make it to the spa, you'll love it! Once you enter, you'll be greeted by an associate there to assist with any questions/needs. As you walk down the hall, the women/men's locker rooms are to your right and further down are the massage rooms. Once you're ready to enter the spa, the locker room has an individual locker for you with a dry bathrobe, towel, slippers, and all your shaving needs. From there you enter the spa with two types of saunas ( one infrared and one steam.), an ice room, and a bath circuit of sorts with each one prepping you (temperature wise) for the main spa all of which are heated from the earth like the Roman's did back in the day. If you've ever googled the hotel, you'll see the main spa. In the picture you'll see 3 areas sectioned off. The two outside ones provide a neck massage via neck jets from above and air jets on your seat while the middle one gives you a back and foot massage with jets. In case you do feel like shopping, there are shops literally down the street! (yes, this is a walk-able distance) These shops cover tourist items, food, clothing, and accessory items so you have a good selection. Feel like sight seeing instead? There's a kodak moment of the valley in the distance next to the Abby and you can check out the Pump room and the Roman Baths. Overall I'd totally go back and it is worth every pound!

Yelp
This is my second time to stay at the Gainsborough and I've already booked for a third visit. The hotel is gorgeous and the location is perfect: right in the centre of Bath. Everyone who works at the hotel is extremely friendly and polite. Nothing is too much trouble and everyone is upbeat and exceedingly welcoming and will greet you by name. I can't recommend this hotel enough: perfect! And right now at Christmas it looks delightfully festive with a charming Christmas tree, inviting spice-scent in the lobby and all sorts of decorative wintertime touches.

Yelp
My cousin and I stayed here for a girl's trip, and it couldn't have been better. It truly exceeded our expectations in every way. First, they upgraded our room so that we could have a room with 2 beds. The facilities are spotless, and each staff member greets you with true warmth and care. Particularly wonderful staff people were: James, Mathew, and Robert. We had amazing treatments with highly skilled practitioners named Adam and Liliana. They served a special vegan menu, which I truly appreciated so that we were able to eat in their restaurant. Also, it's in the heart of Bath. We will be back..

Yelp
I've just returned from a lovely 4 day stay at the Gainsborough with my best childhood friend. As a former magazine editor I am fortunate to have traveled extensively and visited some of the finest European hotels. I can honestly say that the service at the Gainsborough is nothing short of OUTSTANDING and gets my vote for the best service anywhere. The concierge staff (a BIG shout out to you James, Arthur, Adam, Matt and anyone else I might have forgotten) made this trip so memorable. They couldn't have been more accommodating, cheerful and charming.

Yelp
Been to many nice hotels in the U.S. and this place is amazing. The classic double has a comfy king sized bed, stocked mini bar with the fundamentals, heated floor in bathrooms and is very quiet. Staff is beyond amazing. Most importantly, you can use the spa pools, steam and sauna in the mornings and evenings for free. My husband loved it and is not a spa person The spa Included free real hot chocolate. Great location. The rooms are smaller like many European hotels but I can't recommend this place highly enough.

Yelp
My husband and I had a great stay here. Our room was surprisingly large, quiet, and beautifully decorated. The staff was incredibly attentive. I would love to go back again!
