The Best Restaurants and Food Carts in Portland’s St. Johns Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"A sibling bar to Concordia’s neighborhood cocktail bar Wilder, the Garrison bears a similar appeal: a rustic, homey, and casual affair serving high-quality cocktails. The menu is divided between familiar classics — each made with aplomb — and more original drinks. The house drinks are generally spirit-driven and often incorporate more obscure vermouths and amari. While there are options for people who appreciate lighter, refreshing libations, it’s definitely a destination for those who like their drinks with a boozy and botanical kick. Whiskey aficionados will appreciate the bar’s extensive list, as well." - Rebecca Roland

14 Portland Bars and Restaurants Still Offering Cocktails To-Go | Eater Portland

"This spacious bar in St Johns offers some of the best cocktails in the neighborhood, generally spirit-forward and strong. Diners can enjoy them on the premises — including at a bar with an open window along one wall — or they can take them home. Only the classics list (which also tend to lean spirit-heavy, with sazeracs and negronis filling the menu) are available, but those often work well alongside the stunning pizzas from next door’s Gracie’s or a bowl of steaming ramen from the excellent neighboring Mikasa Sushi and Ramen." - Alex Frane

Dedicated taps from a newer local Royale Brewing Company. Great space design, wonderful Roselle, the winter saison. Food can be ordered from next door dining facilities (one of them vegan) & will be delivered to you. Dog-friendly.

DO: order tacos at Taqueria Santa Cruz and get sauced pounding pints from the Garrison! 10/10 date night.

Google
Great little spot with a handful of craft beers on tap plus some interesting cocktails. Pints appropriately priced at $4 with a shared outdoor patio/firepit next to a meatball joint. Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves on a sunny Saturday and look forward to returning someday soon! Thanks! Best, ~S

Google
Probably the best bar in St Johns. They have a really inventive rotating cocktails menu and talented bartenders. Even better, you can grab excellent pizza from next door to accompany your drinks.

Yelp
The Garrison is a compact, cozy little corner bar that shares an outdoor patio with an amazingly aromatic Italian joint that we have yet to try (but will soon!). We stopped in while wandering around the St. Johns Bizarre, and as such, due to the influx of the crowd watching the parade, they weren't offering full cocktails as they usually do here, instead opting for simple liquor & mixer only drinks, so I can't yet comment on the quality of their cocktails, but the bartender was so friendly, and the space so welcoming on a sunny spring day, that we vowed to return when things are a bit more normal, to scope out the vibe. The Garrison seems like it would be an required stop on any St. Johns pub crawl! We hope to find out sooner than later!

Yelp
Wonderful space to enjoy cocktails in the St. John's downtown area. They don't serve food here but they partner with the restaurants around the area so you can order and enjoy in their space. For a lighter meal I enjoy the Gilmet but the staff here is really awesome and can give you their reccommendations too.

Yelp
It's not easy being a cocktail bar in downtown at John's surrounded by very popular dive bars. But the garrison pulls it off. It's nice to be able to sit down and drink a cocktail on a patio or in air conditioning and take a break from the St. John's binge drinking lol.

Yelp
Cool vibe, great food options nearby. Outdoor space is nice! Interesting cocktails, definitely their own flair.

Yelp
A cool cocktail bar and taphouse located in the heart of St. John's. The atmosphere gives you the Portland vibe. The wood interior with the garage doors and outside patio just makes it even better. The cocktails themselves are well made and priced just right. Its even better during happy hour where its $2 off their classic cocktails. The old fashioned tasted great and they also use a single cube for it. The server was very nice as she was also the only one running the bar at the time. Overall, I really like this place and can see myself hanging out more on a nice day.

Yelp
I found out this place had opened up in my neighborhood recently and was very glad to find it. St. Johns doesn't have a lot of options for taprooms and breweries, so this is a great addition to the area. Apparently it's the official taproom for Royale Brewing, which I had not heard of until I came here. I got the flight, and it was a deal for ten bucks. It seems a tad bit on the pricey side at first, but when I got it I was very pleasantly surprised. You get six beers, and the set up was very impressive (take a look at my picture if you want photographic evidence). Every beer sampled was delicious, with my favorite being the coffee saison. The normal pints are four bucks a piece, which is essentially happy hour pricing in most places in the city. Ambiance is great, and the outdoor seating area is nice on hot summer nights. There are a couple of TV's, but they aren't distracting. There isn't food, but there's plenty of options around the area to get food from. Keep it up, Royale Brewing! I will be back many more times.

Yelp
I do wish they were open a bit later however I was in with friends for a cocktail and my drink was crafted perfectly and a deliciously unique drink. A great little place in St John!

Yelp
Rockstar bar and Taphouse! Really loved the vibe and chill country music that keeps it fun but enjoyable too! We will be back with our friends, this place is fun and not to be missed! Prices are average, no major specials. Environment is super fun, way better than most other places in the area! Don't want to miss this gorgeous Taphouse!

Yelp
Nice little hole in the wall tap room. Had about 8? Taps on their board but they have a bar to make your favorite concoction if you opt to go the liquor route. I ordered the peach saison on tap because it screamed "refreshing" to me. The lady copied me and ordered the same thing. It had a light taste, yet clean with a subtle kick of peach hints. Nice brew on a warm day. 6.5 ABV so you won't be skimping out on the alcohol content either ;) Again, this is a small little bar/taproom. They don't have food but are surrounded by a nice selection to choose from so you can bring in if you'd like. Check em out! Service was friendly too.

Yelp
Super friendly staff, lots of room, bring your own food, and best of all superb beers at this new taproom on Lombard in St Johns. No stickers, glasses, or swag yet, but soon.

Yelp
This place is great! Went to grab some beers. Nice selection of some local ones. Especially the pig dog strong ale. Very cool space and design. Love the open windows to the outside. Very open and inviting. You can bring in outside food. Friendly staff. Definitely a great addition the area.

Yelp
Welcomed spot for chill vibes, quick service, and good scene. Watched a few games live here and the crowd was super open and enjoyable.

Yelp
Exceptional craft cocktails. Great staff. Awesome atmosphere and decor. We always enjoy swinging by The Garrison!

Yelp
This place is a refreshing addition to the downtown St. John's scene. I will always love nearby Slim's for late night divey honkytonkin, but this place has a sunny patio and great brews. Definitely adding it to my rounds..
google avatar

Zachary S.

Yelp
The Garrison now has cocktails, and they are fantastic! They also have a pretty great selection of whiskeys and they are super dog friendly. Service is still awesome and the beer selection has expanded.

Yelp
My home away from home. Always friendly, and random people will strike up a conversation with you when you sit at the bar. Tons of fun games to play while you sit and eat food from either the Sudra or 87th and Meatballs! Both places will deliver to this tap room!

Yelp
Awesome spot! Every beer here is worth tasting. My personal fav is the fat unicorn. Lovely outdoor seating area, wonderful food options close by. Timbers games on the main screen. Staff is inviting and attentive. Perfect meeting spot or just to relax. Definitely a pearl in St. Johns.

Emmy S.

Yelp
Great beers, above ordinary conversations, and very friendly bartenders. I honestly pocketed their coaster so I could tell friends about the place. Highly recommend the coffee session and their french pale ale!

Yelp
This is beer only soon to have full bar no food but can order from the surrounding restaurants including Indian and Thai food beers are amazing worth stopping by indoor/outdoor bar.

Yelp
I love Royal Brewing. Definitely in my top 3 for all of Portland Beers. Visit the tap house and bring your favorite food to enjoy.

Yelp
We love this place. We have been coming here for about year and are even bigger fans now that the drink menu has increased. It is nice to have a choice other than beer. Katie rocks!

Yelp
This is our go-to for fresh delicious small batch brews in St. John's. Luckily the staff is super nice, remembers who we are, makes conversation, and pours beer with a nice head (just like they do in Ireland where the owner is from originally). We love the beer here, the decor, the outdoor seating. There is no food served here but plenty of food in the immediate area.

Yelp
One of the better places in town that I've watched a Portland Timbers match: Good-sized crowd and TV. Super dog-friendly. Food is better than average pub fare, because you bring it in from 87th and Meatballs or Sudra. Always someone there you know.
google avatar

Michael K.

Yelp
I can't really vouch for the quality of the beer because we were totally snubbed by the bartender who seemed way too preoccupied with something non-bartending related to even acknowledge us. Apparently this place doesn't like money. I really, really wanted to support you too. Wow.
google avatar

Yelp
You like flying pigs? You'll love this place. Great new beer-focused bar in St Johns. Lots of outdoor seating, nearby tasty food items you can bring over like from the neighboring vegan Indian restaurant and more. Great staff and solid beers. Love it.
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
This is my favorite place to get a beer. They allow me to bring in my dog AND outside food. The bartenders are awesome - super friendly! The atmosphere is comfortable and inviting. And the beer from Royale Brewing is top notch!

Yelp
Amazing beer. Came into the bar July 21 st, my Aunts birthday. She loves beer. Wanted to take her somewhere with great beer. There are many places in Portland with great beer (and this place does) it's hard to find a place with such great service. 5 stars

Yelp
Their Old Fashioned is a must order! The proportions were on the mark and expertly finished with a perfect sized orange zest. The staff was friendly, prompt, and professional. I'll definitely be back soon.

Yelp
One of the best places in St. Johns to get a beer. I'll often get one their saison style drafts but last night I ordered a seasonal stout and it did not disappoint. They know handcrafted beer and the place is super chill and friendly. A plus is if you order food from one of the neighboring restaurants they will deliver to the tap room so you can stay put and order another beer.

CrazyOldMaurice ..

Yelp
Really cool space and very nice bar keep. I feel like the beer is on its way to becoming really good, but it's not quite there in terms of the standard beers. My favorites were actually the seasonals, the pig dog and the Chinook session. I feel like if they keep making beers like this it will become a regular spot for us.

Evan D.

Yelp
awesome place. I came in here randomly with some friends and had a great time. great environment

Alex M.

Yelp
Staff was friendly, nice set up as well, but their beers are lacking. Me and friends had flights of their six available taps and the highest we could give any was the Mr session and coffee saison. Not bad but not great, sold C grade. Fat unicorn and biere de garde were way off. Your pale ale tastes like slightly malty bath water I'm sorry....most places are overdoing hops but did you guys leave them out completely?? Gotta give 3 lenient stars for a new place in the neighborhood with room for improvement and good staff that I interacted with, but beer was a huge letdown and I would give 1/5 on that alone.... maybe I'm a picky asshole bit this is Portland so up your game plllleeeaase
