The Best Bars in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"The Gärten’s open-air courtyard features long rows of picnic tables under shade sails at the dead end of an industrial street. Deft Brewery began here in 2017 and has since been joined by Lost Cause Meadery, Oddish Wine, and Pizza Cassette, offering an experience that caters to nearly every taste. On weekends, enjoy live music as day turns to night, complemented by Neapolitan pizza crafted by award-winning pizzaiolo Jimmy Terwilliger. Evenings at the Gärten against walls climbing with hop vines and a Michelangelo-inspired mural celebrating the art of fermentation." - Kelly Bone

Google
We loved our pizzas! I loved my olives with a glass of wine. Young man at the wine area was very polite and attentive.

Joe Schneider

Google
It’s a great combination of good pizza and whatever you’d like to drink. And they had live music on the Saturday night I was there, which helped create a fun atmosphere.

Nikolaus Behner

Google
What a cool place. Outdoor seating in a central courtyard surrounded by a wood-fired pizza eatery, a Winery, a Meadery and a Brewery. There is also live music if your timing is good. Parking is a bit of a challenge and you can't get there by accident, but it's worth it.

ADRIANA PAEZ

Google
What a great hangout spot. All in one spot has deft beer brewing, has good beer options, an organic beer spot, honey beer spot, and food service offering great tasting pizzas and sandwiches. Open air with some shade. Has a stage for music on the weekends. Parking on the street. The thin crust sopresata with spiced honey was my favorite accompanied by some beers from Deft. I was so full that I didn't have space for a sandwich. The sandwiches are made with pizza crust instead of bread, I can't wait to try them. Parking on the street. It's not a fancy location, so come casual. Hidden spot amongst warehouses but worth the stop!!

Google
We traveled from Phoenix AZ and were so impressed with finding this gem hidden away. Delicious beer, impeccable food that tasted like a lot of love and care was put into it and fun atmosphere! Thanks for giving us 'Zonies' a wonderful experience! We will recommend to our friends who are planning a San Diego trip!

Alicia Sanchez

Google
Pizza place is always good there. The sandwiches are delicious and the appetizers are the way to go. We were really bummed that the Lost Cause Meadery was closed to the public because they were having a private event. That is why we go is to get the mead flights and we didn't get to try any. I was really disappointed.

Google
I can't rave enough about this, my new favorite place to visit in San Diego. What a fun vibe! A winery (with cocktails), a meadery, and a European-focused brewery sit around an outdoor stage and eating area with an utterly fantastic pizzeria. Seriously, Pizza Cassette is ridiculously good...and I say this as a Staten Islander who eats top-notch pizza weekly. The crust is very flavorful with a nice Neopolitan-style chew, and I loved the spicy Calabrian salsa on our pie. The meatballs were juicy and loaded with flavor. The only less-than-stellar dish was the "heirloom" tomatoes (that didn't seem to be heirloom at all) Caprese salad with burrata. Otherwise, I can't wait to try more of the menu. Throw in a great '60s/'70s cover band a fun crowd, and you've got yourself a helluva night!

Google
Just tried the Garten on a Friday night with a few friends. The experience was really fun and I’ll definitely be going back! Lots of beer to choose from, a few delicious eats to try, and live music performance were a few highlights! Looks like they have more coming as part of the property is under renovation. Lots of outdoor seating still. Parking is a little odd but it sorts itself out as long as you’re willing to get creative

Yelp
The entertainment and atmosphere was great nice place to hang out and have a cold beer

Yelp
What a great venue. 3 adult beverage locations in one and a fun food truck type place. We went to the cider place and got the blueberry cider. Very similar to drinking sour beer. I loved it. My friend got a glass of the mead and enjoyed it so much that he went back and got some to go. We ordered food. The Italian sandwich which my friend really enjoyed and I got the pork belly sandwich. Which was everything you think it will be. Pizza looked good. Lots of outdoor seating. Had trivia the night we were there, but we didn't play. Parking is rough but would come back for sure.

Yelp
This was a fun spot! Live guitarist last night and a very relaxed atmosphere with heaters. We ordered food from Pizza Cassette which was good but I wish they had another food option as well. My boyfriend wasn't a fan of his IPA from Deft Brewing, but I thought my Bay Park Blonde was good.

Yelp
The cutest, most laid back place for a chill night out with friends. Loved the communal atmosphere, and the live music matched the vibe perfectly. Great vendors and great service, my friends and I got wine, mead and pizza and everything was delicious. The Sting was my personal favorite, the hot honey was the perfect addition. We also got the H to the Ezzo and added hot honey and it was equally as yummy. Definitely going to bring more friends around to this spot, loved it!

Yelp
I love the atmosphere of this place. The outdoor, picnic style seating is so fun, especially when there is live music. Not great for chatting though so if you're trying to catch up with someone go during a time with no performer. The pizza is super good and perfect for splitting between two. I had never had mead before either and the flight was the perfect taster, they were all very fruity and sweet which I love.
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
10/10 pizza, lots of beverage options, and live music! Family friendly atmosphere, bring your pets, heaters make even a chill night really nice.
google avatar

Yelp
Really cozy place with all the right vendors in the area. If I lived here I'd come here, it was relaxing and the indulgences were all tasty.
google avatar

Tria M.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, very very good beers at Deft Brewing, outstanding flatbread za. Midafternoon with plenty of shade and shared picnic tables set amongst climbing hop vines. Enjoyed live music (a single man acoustic set). Great lil hideaway in the middle of a quansot hut industrial area. Cool vibes

Yelp
Nice little venue. They have a stage and have live music on the weekends. Nice little gem of a place. Hidden and great vibe. There are 4 restaurants around this. Pizza cassette, deft brewery, Oddish wine, and lost meadery. Love the variety to choose from. The pizza was excellent and deft brewery was also very good. The other two were ok. I'd go back here for sure. Service was good.

Yelp
We've been wanting to try this place for some time now. The patio is sprinkled with beautiful olive trees and other greenery - hops, etc. Fun fact: you can "adopt a hop." There are a few drink places to choose from- Lost Cause Meadery, Oddish wines, and Deft brewery. The food place is called Pizza Cassette and has delicious pizzas including a vegan selection. We had The Queen, Rossi No cheese (vegan) and The Sting pizzas. I stopped by Oddish for their Red blend and my husband had The Red IPA at Deft. The server at Oddish was so lovely and we had a great conversation about the wines. Love that the bottles read "unfiltered and unfined, it's OK, relax!" Overall a relaxing experience with delicious food and drinks. Kid and dog friendly as well!
google avatar

Shania A.

Yelp
They have a small wood fired oven outside. The pizza was delicious and perfectly crispy. It is a very thin crust pizza though, but I don't mind that. They had live music when we went on a Friday night and the ambiance was super cute. It was pretty packed. They also have beer on tap and the beer was also good! Service was good as the food came out relatively quickly, though you have to order the food yourself at the counter. Overall, a nice place to hang with friends with a cute atmosphere :) Food: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Ambiance: 4/5

Yelp
Was craving pizza outdoors with drinks. The Garten fits the description to a tee. They've really transformed this space into a fun outdoor beergarten. It's small, but they've managed to fit a large number of picnic tables that are nicely spread out and comfortable. There are four vendors in the area serving up pizza, beer, mead and wine! They often have live musicians performing on the little stage. It's a great concept and a perfect place for a chill gathering!
google avatar

Yelp
Great place for awesome music, pizza & beers! Had a great time celebrating my bro-in-laws birthday at The Garten! Ordered a couple of flights & ate some pizza and all was good! Very kid and pet friendly and had enough outdoor seating space for my family to enjoy the bands outside. Played some folksy music that I enjoyed and I'm honestly willing to go back for another special occasion!

Yelp
My husband and I love this place for a midweek cheap date. Pizza & mead!!! I mean really? The best part is the pizza inside by Pizza Cassette. They have Gluten Free !!! It is the best! They make their dough from scratch to order. They also have vegan cheese. While I get my GF, DF prosciutto & arugula pizza ... my husband gets their pastrami sandwich that is Huge!! Which is also handmade fresh bread. He can never eat all of it, and my husband eats a lot, he's always hungry (but not here). The main patio is too loud for us when they have music or game night so we go into the mead bar and enjoy a yummy flight or two of the monthly mead assortment with our pizza. We can still hear the music but much better to have conversation. So good
google avatar

Ais W.

Yelp
Amazing gluten free pizza! Was unsure if we should order the gluten free, but it was delicious and the texture was on point. The Mead was also out of this word!! Highly recommend
google avatar

Julia A.

Yelp
Great spot to gather with a group! Live music was great, pizza & sandwiches were delicious (though a bit pricy) and there's drinks for everyone: beer, wine and mead. Casual & just walk up to get your own drinks. Will definitely be back.

Carolyn K.

Yelp
I liked the different wine/pizza/beer counters and vendors. Worth the trip! And right next to a dispensary :)
google avatar

Allison A.

Yelp
The spot has such a fun vibe with many different options for drinks. The meade flight was amazing. My pizza (parliament) was disappointing as it was very dry.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice neighborhood eatery on a warm Sunday afternoon. There was a live band (the IDEAS) playing while we enjoyed the pizza and beers. We had the Fungi mushrooms and salami) first and then later ordered the Pork soda white pizza. Both were excellent. Saw other people ordering the meatballs and sandwich, both looked really good and may try it on our next visit. There was a mead, wine and Deft brewing. We've had friends who have come to the Garten and have enjoyed themselves. Glad we were able to check it out ourselves.

Yelp
The Garten has a large patio area that is dog friendly. I like that it's close to work, so it's a great spot to grab some beer, mead, or pizza with coworkers. I tried the margherita pizza, some mead, a little bit of beer, and ice cream! My friend also got some olives for herself. There was also some live music as well! I love the atmosphere and can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Linz N.

Yelp
This is a lovely and slightly off the beaten path beergarden with a few different businesses including an English brewery, a meadery, a fruit winery, and a wood fired pizza cart. I've tried the beer, mead, and pizza and it's all amazing! The sparkling meads were my favorite as they were very light and refreshing. Not all of the businesses are open 7-days a week but the brewery is. So check online! They also have live music and trivia some nights. It is dog friendly, full of sunny picnic tables, perfect to relax and play a game of dominoes or chat with friends. I was most impressed by the Lost Cause Meadery which is kind of hidden in the back right corner but boasts a stunning indoor space and its own kind of secret patio. All dog friendly!!
google avatar

Pauline T.

Yelp
cute little intimate winery/brewery that has a live band playing during the day. Stopped by with friends and was blown away at the oddish's wines (the Meade one is so sweet and good) so we went over to Lost Cause Meadery and got a flight from them (not pictured). And wow definitely gonna be one of my new go to spots to take friends who visit the area! I love sweet wines and the prices are so affordable! Definitely a vibe! Come check out this place if you're in the area! The only thing I'm eh about is parking if it gets busier.

Yelp
The Gärten has finally opened on South Bay Par. The beer garden is nestled between Pizza Cassette, Lost Cause Meadery, Deft Brewing, and soon to open Oddish Wine. The garden is beautifully set up with communal benches, barrel tables with stools, and a stage with some comfy seats. I like that it offers shaded, semi shaded, and full sun areas: something for everyone. The garden is well lite for nightlife and well offering live music and other forms of entertainment. The Gärten opens at noon. I really like this little German inspired beer garden. There's no private parking lot for now, so one will have to rely on street parking.
google avatar

Alisa M.

Yelp
This is a cool music venue that is nestled in between Deft Brewing and a Mead place as well as wine. They also have a pizza truck that serves delicious pizza. Place is dog friendly.
google avatar

Louisa N.

Yelp
Yummy pizza and drinks. Hailey and Teddy were so helpful in explaining the wine club benefits! Very friendly staff :)
google avatar

Yelp
This was awesome! Came here with some friends and absolutely loved this place. They have a few different places to get beverages from. There's a winery, mead brewery and a beer brewery all in the same courtyard. I got a mead flight and it was delicious. Highly recommend giving the mead place a try if you've never had good mead. There's a pizza tent that's there Wednesday-Sunday and it's AMAZING! Their dough is perfect. Good crisp. Not floppy at all. They also offer sandwiches and other sides like salad and meatballs. Everything looked delicious. Everyone working were very friendly. This place is dog friendly and a great place for kids.

Yelp
Had a great time at The Garten. The ambience is very cool. It is a common outdoor area with 4 establishments- a winery/cider (Oddish Wine) place, a meadery (Lost Cause) a brewery (Deft) and a pizza joint (pizza cassette). The pizza was great/ the crust was yummy and the toppings were fresh. My friend tried a cider and it was fresh and light. My husband tried the Meade and he really enjoyed it. I had beer and I enjoyed Deft. Everyone from each place was so friendly and lovely too. They also had live music which was nice too. I would def suggest getting there early if you want seating. There is a lot of it but it gets quite busy. We will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Great little outdoor communal spot for Pizza/Mead/Beer/Wine! I visited a long time ago, Nov 2022 and need to give this place a bump so more people can see it! Good parking since it's off the main roads. Take a seat at any of the tables and order a pizza + more at Pizza Cassette, then everyone can divvy up and choose their drinks of choice! We need more open air spots like this in Sunny San Diego! Great concept!

Phuc ..

Yelp
Hidden gem. If you like German beers you'll like this spot. Ppl behind the counter were really nice and let me try a couple of the beers. Right across the way was a pizza spot. Although I did not order anything, it looked amazing. Also in the same Garten was a Meadery, which I indulged in as well. Cool spot. I'll be back.
google avatar

Erik R.

Yelp
Stumbled across this place today, really wonderful. Fantastic ambiance (great weather, pleasant music from the DJ, everyone in good spirits, hops growing, shade and a nice breeze). We had beer and some pizza, both were great and we'll definitely be coming back. It's like an outdoor BLAH, just chill with great food and grog.

Yelp
First time visit, been on my saved list for a too long. We waited too long to visit. Love this place! Wine, beer, cider, mead, (& sodas for the kids) delicious pizza, live music ! Not too loud so you can talk, family friendly & dog friendly. Great service from each vendor on site. My wife and Inwill definitely be back with friends! Great date night.
google avatar

Cedric S.

Yelp
Great place to spend some time with friends, chill, eat good pizza and sandwiches. An option to grab a beer, wine, or mead. All crafted products in this establishment, and I love this place overall.

Alicia S.

Yelp
Great music & drinks. EXCELLENT pizza. The service over at Oddish Wines was awesome- had fun chatting with their staff.

Yelp
I've been having the Garten on my radar for a minute and was very excited to come check it out! Unfortunately, I didn't do my my research very well and turns out 2 of the 3 places are closed on Tuesdays. Luckily, Deft Brewing was open so it wasn't a total bust. Deft is a very traditional German/Oktoberfest style brewery so mostly lager type of beers. Which was cool, half our group couldn't partake however. The patio is really big, with tons of seating and a stage plus it's dog friendly! I'll have to stop by again to get the full experience and a fair chance.
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
We finally checked out the Gärten yesterday afternoon and glad we did! There is a large group patio area, which was perfect for a nice sunny day. The patio connects Deft Brewery, Lost Cause Meadery, and Pizza Cassette. They will also be opening up Oddish Winery soon. Lost Cause Meadery feels like it's own unique spot when you go in. Where as Deft Brewery opens up to the patio area and the pizza spot is connected to the patio outside. So both feel more interconnected. The vibes and murals were interesting- they even had Hops hanging everywhere. They only have one TV inside Deft though, so sadly not the best spot for football. However, nice for hanging with friends on a beautiful day. They also had happy hour 4-6pm so starting getting a bit busier then. We tried a mead flight- it was our first time trying mead (made with honey). They were all very different, the rose one was pretty good. However, some of the others were a little too thick and sweet for our liking. Please don't let that stop you, to each their own, as they say. The beers were more so Belgium, English, Irish, German type brews vs a lot of IPAs. I'm more of an IPA fan myself, so wished they had more options. However, the beer was still good. The star was the pizza! They were very tasty. The white pizza with carmalized onions was a pleasant surprise- highly recommend! All in all fun spot and unique set up....

Wendy B.

Yelp
We brought our German friends here on a Friday night and it was bustling. Great music, tasty pizza lots of beer options. It is difficult to park, but once you get there it is very festive!
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
We've been twice (once at night and once for lunch) and loved it both times! Also I searched online and couldn't find this anywhere so wanted to add: yes it's dog friendly!! We have had the beer, pizza, and now the wine! All so good. The pizza is to die for. We've had 3 kinds so far and all been delish. The ambiance is lovely. We loved Oddish wines and took home a bottle. The beer is German style and incredibly tasty. It's in an odd industrial location, pulling up I was a bit iffy. But you don't notice once there because they did such a nice job with the space. Also super family friendly too. Lots of kiddos.
google avatar

Kenny D.

Yelp
A must stop by for anyone around the area. Great little beer garden with fun events like live music, trivia, etc. They have beer, wine, mead, and the pizza is incredible!
google avatar

Jenny Z.

Yelp
Cute little outdoor beer garden in the middle of an industrial area in Bay Park with one meadery, one brewery, one winery, and a pizza joint. Great spot to grab a drink with friends after work as there's a little something for everyone in terms of drink options, and live music as well. We really enjoyed the pizza as well.
google avatar

Lora K.

Yelp
Great place to taste. Beer, wine, and yummy mead. Very comfortable and friendly. Went to Open Mic night and really enjoyed the casual atmosphere. Beer flights were great and very creative pizza.
google avatar

Jared S.

Yelp
Great hidden gem. Live music was great! Can get packed and it's open seating. Going to make this a go to spot!

Sydney Smith ..

Yelp
Ryan is absolutely amazing! Incredibly helpful and great with recommendations! Could not recommend this place more. Pizza was delish and super fast!
google avatar

Tanya S.

Yelp
The ambiance was great. Parking is terrible !!! But if you carpool with people it's not bad and can make it work. They have everything you need with beer and pizza and wine ! Great place for a group and dog friendly !
google avatar

Lo M.

Yelp
I want so bad to leave more stars but this place needs some serious mosquito control. I was there the other night. It was lovely. Music was good, pizza is delicious. Drink options are great. It was packed. I sat down with my wine and was literally swarmed by huge mosquitos. The last time I remember anything like this was in the Deep South. I was like oh it must be me. But I watched everyone swatting and even two different groups spraying repellent on them. I talked to another group and the girl had at least 15 bites that had welled up and they were leaving because she needed to run home and get cortisone cream. Please install some fans and get some pest control to find the source of where these guys are coming from and haunting your business. I would love to come back but don't want to wait until December when the flying aholes are gone!
google avatar

Jeneille A.

Yelp
One of the coolest gems tucked away in SD on your way into downtown. Good vibes with the pizza and options of the brewery, coffee, winery and meadery
google avatar

Nohemi A.

Yelp
Awesome atmosphere for a friend or family gathering. Amazing alcohol options (mead, wine, beer) and yummy pizza and sandwiches. Super cute will definitely be going back.

Amy D.

Yelp
Delicious pizzas and good beer. What's not to like? We live just up the hill, so it's extremely convenient for us to pop in here on occasion. We are older folks, so we like to get in and out of here before the after-work crowd shows up. Things tend to get more lively and louder -- which is fine. Anyway, so glad they opened up in our neighborhood. We will continue to support them.

K K.

Yelp
What a wonderful place to spend the afternoon! With live music, the beautiful patio, delicious pizza, and cold beer- who could ask for anything more? I saw people of all ages, from 6 months to 60, all smiling and having a good time. I wish I lived closer!

Tanya G.

Yelp
Great ambiance to hang with a variety of options! Haven't tried the brewery, but the meadery is excellent (didn't even know I liked Mead!), the winery has some fun twists, and the pizza is great with good dietary considerations.
