Had a wonderful experience for birthday dinner. The food and service were excellent! Great venue with the addition of being dog friendly on the patio. The patio is in full shade late afternoon/ early evening and very comfortable on a 90° day, even for Boomer. Thank you as well for the bowl of water for him.

I have always loved the food and the area of this restaurant. It's a very art forward area of the city. This visit I went to the ladies restroom and was quite impressed by their attention to amenities offered. Sounds weird that the bathroom was what pushed me to review this restaurant online but here I am 🤣) they had Tampax tampons, mouth wash, hand lotion, teeth flossers, a nicer brand of soap and wrinkle release. I loved that they had a bulletin board to help promote locate business. Again, I wanna say the food is great and service is a 10 out of 10. But the thoughtfulness with their restroom amenities was the icing on the cake.

We came here for lunch today. I really like the way this whole building and businesses in here look it’s pretty cool. We sat at the bar and I got a Bloody Mary was just feeling like one. I ordered the Cobb salad and added Ahi Tuna and grilled chicken - got to keep the protein up! It was a very good salad. The dressing comes mixed into the salad as it’s made. Next time I would ask for it in the side but that’s my fault. My wife had the Meatball open faced sandwich. I know it doesn’t look like it from the picture but she liked it. It’s always difficult to eat an open faced instead of picking it up with your hands. We enjoyed our time here and the bartender and another employee at the bar had us laughing. It was a good time.

Had a great meal at The Gate House. My family and I went in for brunch while I was visiting Rochester. Several of us had the superfood skillet pancake. Picture borrowed from The Gate House since I forgot to take my own. The atmosphere was also great and our server did a great job on such a large party. The only feedback I have is not allowing large parties to split the check. We had 16 people all paying in separate groups. It was unnecessarily complicated to force us all on the same check and do the math to split it on our own.

I went here with a friend before going to a comedy show. We had trouble deciding on an appetizer but chose the meatballs. These were delicious. I could not believe how good they were and how delicious the sauce was. My only complaint is that there isn't enough bread--we should have asked for more. The server said the side salads were small but I thought they were a great size. We both got the steak and it was so tender you could cut it with a spoon. The asparagus was big and I was worried they would be stringy and they were not! The asparagus was so tender and well seasoned. We splurged on the red velvet cookie skillet and I think it was the best cookie skillet I've ever had. I cannot wait to go back! The drink menu was good too! I can't wait to go back and try more

Google
We’ve been here over 20 times, so this review is long overdue. Every visit has been fantastic - delicious food, great service, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The Falafel Plate may be listed as an appetizer, but it’s my go-to entrée, packed with flavor, from the creamy hummus to the perfectly grilled veggies and warm pita. The Fried Burrata is pure, melty goodness, and the Veggie Gate Plate and Wood-Fired Mac & Goat Cheese never disappoint. The Winter Squash & Mascarpone Ravioli? Absolutely incredible. And The South Wedge—just perfection! The Gate House is consistently amazing, and we can’t recommend it enough!

The staff and food were excellent. The food was very reasonably priced, about the same as fast food restaurants. I will be going back soon.

Yelp
We went last night-the food was DELICIOUS!!! We had the "gate plate", Thai chicken wings, Caesar salad. I also had the "blood moon" specialty drink and it was GREAT!! It was a Friday night so it was quite busy, but they sat us right away at a high top table in the bar area. Our server, Laura, was an absolute Doll!! So sweet and wonderful service. We will definitely be back- THANK YOU!!

Yelp
I hate to say it, but I was a little more excited about The Gatehouse than what I ultimately experienced.. and to be clear, I'm mostly talking about the food, not the overall vibe or the staff. The service was great, and our food came out quickly, especially considering we were a large party. Overall, the experience was smooth, but my meal just didn't quite hit the mark for me. I ordered the vegan plate and was genuinely happy to see a few vegan options on the menu(always a win in Rochester), but the execution felt a bit off. I loved the rosemary fries and the vegan burger patty itself; both were flavorful. The vegan mac salad was.. well.. warm (which I wasn't expecting or prefer), but still tasted good. Where things got weird was the vegan meat hot ..it had a strong taco/cumin seasoning that really clashed with the rest of the plate. It just didn't feel cohesive. And while I'm always here for avocado, in this case it felt unnecessary and added to the overall confusion of the dish. Was it supposed to be Mexican-American-inspired ? Would've rather just seen it as classic Rochester garbage plate to be honest.. Because the meal didn't wow me, I ended up skipping the $10 vegan dessert, even though I was initially excited to try it. That said, I'll probably give The Gatehouse another shot down the line. I'm still curious, and I appreciate that they even have vegan options, but next time I'm hoping for a more thoughtful, balanced plate... but even the burger combinations sounded outrageous... Bonus - How I would adjust the veg plate as a long time vegan: First off... let it be known, this is what Rochester is all about ! That said, I'd make a few tweaks. Serve the mac salad cold (as it should be!). For the meat sauce, I'd tone down the Mexican flavors... MUCH LESS cumin and cinnamon, more garlic and smoked paprika. Maybe even a splash of soy sauce or a good vegan beef broth would deepen the umami too. I'd also skip the avocado on top and swap in some classic diced onions instead. Side ketchup and mustard. :)

Yelp
Disappointed with the food. My burger was overcooked and dry. Beef had no flavor. Sweet potato fries were overly sweet covered in sugar, my husbands lunch was a meatball bomber which was burned on the bottom and he struggled to cut it with a sharp knife, it lacked tomato sauce and had very little meat. The service was fine and ambiance is very cool & trendy. Unfortunately their prices are higher than most places with similar menu. So we most likely won't be back.

Yelp
Another amazing meal at the Gate House! It truly never disappoints. This time I had the Highland (I believe) salad with feta cheese substituted for the goat cheese and added salmon, which was delicious! My friend had a Cesar salad with grilled shrimp- although the shrimp looked a little too overdone for my liking she said it was wonderful. She also had a specialty cocktail that was pink (I believe it had "mother" in the title) it looked really good and she drank it down to prove that point- lol Check this place out if you haven't!!

Yelp
Gorgeous July evening so we elected to eat outside. They always have great cocktails so started with a summer blueberry number. I ordered the Nashville hot chicken tenders with rosemary Parmesan fries. It came with sweet pickle slices and Cole slaw. My partner had a classsic cheeeseburger with black and tan onion rings and a vanilla shake. Service was good but a bit slow but it was obvious staff was not adequate to handle the amount of diners. All in all a great experience. The Gate House doesn't disappoint

Yelp
Best glaze on salmon ever. Forgot to ask for the wasabi removed but it was still really good! Amazing service, was here with a large group and they were very accommodating.

Yelp
The Gate House is a gem. We ate here after our daughter's graduation from RIT, and it truly was the perfect place for our party of five to celebrate the special occasion. We started with drinks: the best root beer floats imaginable, Seasmoke (Bacardi, passionfruit, guava, lime, blue spirulina), and Mother of Dragons (strawberry vodka, dragonfruit liqueur, white peach, rose cava). I love sweet drinks and the Mother of Dragons was perfect. For an appetizer, we shared the strawberry burrata, and this was one of the most unique and delicious appetizers I've ever had. Our entrees consisted of burgers, chicken, a pizza, and the spring pea ravioli. Everything was cooked to perfection, but in my opinion the stand out entree was the ravioli. The brown butter sauce was magnificent and I savored every bite. Service was fantastic, and I can't say enough great things about our Gate House experience.

Yelp
first time I have ever been here and the ambience was very date night esque but not too fancy. The service was great and the server was very kind. I am dairy free and sometimes it is hard to find options but they had a great vegan and gluten-free menu! They even had kids gluten-free pizza!! my friends and I got the bruschetta and two of their signature drinks which I do not remember the names of them but they were delicious!! I got a regular burger because apparently they're well known for their burgers and I got apples on it and fried onions which was very different but amazing. Also got mashed potato and you could tell it was homemade. We also tried the molton lava cake which was delicious to end the night with. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Had a very limited window to have lunch and return to the Auditorium Theater for my nieces dance comp. We had no reservations and the place was packed. The bartender Laura was outstanding and flagged us over for a small 2-top at the Bar. She said she would have us in/out in an hour and made good on that as well as far surpassed our expectations with service and personality. We did the brunch burgers ... YUM! Laura was the best!!! Very attentive to my brother and I, then packed up our other meals to go back and feed his wife/kids with 8 min to spare...Outstanding! We love the Gate House (btw...they are gluten free), we have been here many times, but today Laura made our experience even better. Kudos to her and hopefully her manager reads this review, and appreciates what they have in her. Thank you Laura!

Yelp
It's taken me a long time to review The Gate House for a very silly reason: I simply forget to snap a picture of their food before getting too excited and diving in. I've never had a bad meal here, and I've eaten at The Gate House at least half a dozen times. The falafel and pita platter is divine, all their pizzas are incredibly solid, and the eggplant "fries" shareable plate is innovative and a hit with any eggplant lover. If I can offer one recommendation for what to order, I suggest The Wease: a burger with bacon, an INCREDIBLY juicy patty, and a crispy, flavorful black and tan onion ring on top. If I can offer an additional recommendation... get a side of the black and tan onion rings with it. According to our server, the rings are beer-battered with a dark brew instead of the usual lighter choice, and you can taste the difference. The space is large, with a wood-fired pizza oven behind the food counter at the far end, and always a little bit loud due to the sheer number of people carrying on lively conversations. The bar is long and, in addition to the chairs at the bar, has a few two-person high-top tables in the area. I'm absolutely going to keep coming back--the siren call of those onion rings is hard to resist.

Yelp
I've been going here for years whenever I'm home in Rochester. This trip I went 3 times with 3 different groups of people. I love the specialty drink menu. I love the wood fire wings. I love the pizza. I also got the chicken tortilla one day this trip and the flavor profile was out of this world! I'll be back this summer and I'm already exited to see what the seasonal menu will have. Gate House tastes like HOME.

Yelp
Tthe service we got was pretty terrible with the waitress never coming back to check on us or bring us what she promised. The food was ok but way too expensive for what it was.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite American Restaurants in Rochester. The location in Village Gate is ideal. The ambiance of the reataurant is classy, open and vibly. The best part of the Gatehouse and what they are known for is their Burgers and Pizzas. Im not a burger fan but have been told by several of my friends that their burgers are some of the best they have had! I can speak to the Pizza, Its delicious- every variation they have (ive had all of them)! They do not take reservations and are pretty busy so I suggest coming early to avoid a long wait.

Yelp
Nothing awful, nothing special It was Saturday night, we had a reservation, we were there on time but had a wait 10 minutes. Nothing awful. The four of us co II is not communicate unless you were within inches away as it was too loud. I've seen worse, but it was not good. I ordered the Wegmans Lamberger. I've been eating lamb since I was five years old. It was the driest overcooked lamb I've ever had. My wife ordered chicken Milan. I tasted it. It also was dry, which probably means it was overcooked. One of our friends ordered salmon, and look good. He told me it was good, but yes, the salmon was a little overcooked. If you know, salmon, you never want salmon overcooked Our other friend ordered a salad with a protein. He did not complain. That again the chef didn't actually create the lettuce. The service was fine, but I probably will never go back to this restaurant. There was just nothing about it. That would make me want to come back. To go further, if you ever have not been to the village gate, be aware parking is not great. That Add's to yet one more reason not quickly want togo there.

Yelp
Talk about amazing food! This is our go-to celebratory restaurant. This place just feels fancy and high tier. Although it's on the pricier side, the food is unmatched. I've ordered burgers, pizzas, and steak, and everything is always cooked to perfection and tastes delicious. Our favorite appetizer is definitely the nachos and let me tell you, the serving is quite large! The bacon wrapped dates are also amazing. Limited outdoor seating is available and overlooks the cute courtyard it shares with the neighboring establishments. It is also located in a building with multiple other merchants you can browse while waiting to be seated.

Yelp
Fantastic! Great quality, great service. Highly recommend the Cajon burger and Manhattan salad. The children's pizza was traditional, good quality ingredients. Will gladly come back next time we are in rochester! Our waitress Stacy was also fantastic! Great service!

Yelp
An upscale experience with reasonable prices. Beautiful location in the heart of reclaimed industrial space, the Village Gate. A little too brightly lit for my taste, but perfect vibe.

Yelp
The food was pretty good and our server was very nice and helpful with any questions.

Yelp
My experience at THE GATE HOUSE was marvelous! On a busy Saturday night I got seated in just 10 mins, and the staff was super friendly! As for the food!!!! 10/10 I had " the auditorium" pizza and my lovely friend had a burger with rosemary fries which were to die for! the ambiance of the place was super relaxing not too chaotic ,the server was super quick and patient with us 10/10 will recommend.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my food here, however, my friend and I both have dietary restrictions and our waitress was extremely rude to us both about it the whole night. I am not sure I would go back due to the difficulty it caused. Once I got my food, it was really good but I was disappointed with the service.

Yelp
Very quaint atmosphere. Service is professional and fast. Very friendly staff. Food is absolutely delicious.

Yelp
Went to the Gate House for Valentine's Day. Great meal. I am usually a steak and potatoes guy but went for the winter squash and mascarpone ravioli. It was a great choice and very shareable. Wife had the blackened scallops which were perfectly cooked and not too spicy. Waitress was awesome. Love the rustic vibe of the decor.

Yelp
I'm in Rochester for a bit on the Wiz national tour and decided to give this place a try. Unfortunately, the food was quite bland. I ordered the salmon with mashed potatoes and asparagus, but the salmon lacked seasoning and just had some Thai chili sauce dumped on top. I'd rate this place a 3. It took 45 minutes to get my meal, and I was hoping for something closer to what I cook at home, but it definitely didn't meet my expectations. The mashed potatoes were flavorless and seemed to be missing the essential butter and cream. It should be a crime to call those bland potatoes "mashed potatoes."

Yelp
The food was delicious and the atmosphere was incredible and the service was very nice

Arvid Y.

Yelp
After many years, I finally returned to The Gate House. Like before, food is not mind-blowingly great, but the portions are generous and food is predictably good. A good place to bring out-of-towners with children. Seating is usually plentiful and spacious. Reservations can also be made in advance. My go-to is the Wegman burger consisting of lamb with a greek yogurt sauce and feta cheese. They also have a nice little patio for the warmer months.

Randi T.

Yelp
Great place! Food was good, service was fine, ambiance is what it's supposed to be. Only disappointment was the rosemary garlic French fries were regular fries. Nothing too interesting. Enjoy going here!
google avatar

Andrew D.

Yelp
The service and atmosphere are nice, but when it comes to the food, there's not much that stands out. I ordered the Wease burger with sweet potato fries (which I was told was their claim to fame), and it was just okay. There wasn't anything blatantly wrong with it, besides the burger being a little dry. But, there wasn't a lot to praise either. The fries were cooked well, but a little too sweet for my taste. Unfortunately, the experience is soured with some high prices for non-impressive results. Bottom line, not a bad meal, but not worth another trip.

Yelp
The Gate House is always a great place to eat. The new location is huge and has plenty of room. The service is excellent. Definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a nice place to dine.

Cary G.

Yelp
Food service and ambiance all great! Haven't been to the gate house in ages and came for a graduation luncheon. What a great surprise! Please go and try or revisit if you haven't been in a bit. Everyone loved the food and service in our party of 13.

Amy S.

Yelp
Menu for brunch is incredible. Great variety from drinks to entrees. Make a reservation as it gets busy quick on Sunday.
google avatar

Elizabeth T.

Yelp
Romantic atmosphere. Somewhat quiet and beautiful decor. Based on the menu prices, I'd say this is more of a $$$ place not $$...but the portion sizes are very big. You don't really need an appetizer or a shareable plate if you're ordering an entree. We certainly did not expect the quantity of food. The staff we encountered were all super nice. Restrooms are super clean.
google avatar

Kristin R.

Yelp
Excellent, knowledgeable bartender, wonderful waitress, great food and an overall great experience. Three of us shared appetizers - the bacon wrapped dates, meatballs, rosemary truffle fries and baked Brie - each was excellent! And the bathroom was well appointed with great artwork!
google avatar

Angela B.

Yelp
A trip to my hometown recently included brunch at the Gate House. I have many fond memories of going to the village gate as a kid and checking out the artwork and eateries, so coming back with my own kiddos tugs at my nostalgic heart strings. I have been to the GH a couple times but it was several years ago so it's been a minute. The ambiance is modern and unpretentious, the bathrooms are clean and semi open kitchen adds to a cozy atmosphere. The waitress waiting on our table was clearly a professional and took good care of our party. The downfall for me was the food. The chilaquiles I ordered had barely any salsa on it, the queso tasted like plastic jarred cheese product and the tortillas were incredibly oily. I had a bite of my husband's burger and it was dry and under seasoned. The fries were the only highlight for me. The pizzas that were coming out the kitchen looked so much better than what I ordered. I'll definitely order one of those on my return here. On a positive note, the kids loved the items from the kids menu, cheeseburger sliders and fries.
google avatar

Yelp
Brunch!! Yes please! I haven't been to the Gate House since it moved locations. I love the new location. There are multiple menus and we had to ask for the brunch menu. Once received everything on it looked fabulous! I had the crepes. I was a bit surprised that the crepe portion was so small, but they were yummy! Came with eggs and potatoes also. My friend had the pumpkin bread and loved it. Our server was friendly and attentive. I will definitely do brunch here again.
google avatar

Kelly O.

Yelp
My burger was phenomenal. Cooked perfectly and so flavorful. The fries were also very good. Everyone in my group enjoyed our food. Our server was nice, if a bit scattered (but it was also busy and we were a bigger group). The restaurant is located in a cute area. It's perfect for a casual date or a get together with friends. There was a changing table in one of the bathrooms, which is nice.

Katie D.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant in Rochester! Definitely try the wings, and the molten lava cake for dessert!

Lori Q.

Yelp
Ordered a Bloody Mary and they didn't even put celery in it. Nothing and we got charged for it.

Lash A.

Yelp
I took the time to do a review out of my busy schedule. I have to acknowledge the manager Ryan. This lady literally saved my life. I may have gave the wrong time for a retirement dinner and she went out of her way to accommodate me. Very professional, very honest and very accommodating. I can't say enough about what this woman did for me. Enough to make sure that she was acknowledged. This is my favorite place to hold any type of dinner party. I feel that more popular restaurants need to have this level of professionalism.
google avatar

Barbara S.

Yelp
I was so annoyed having to wait 30 minutes for a table when there were clearly empty tables in the front. It seems like anyone who walks in, regardless of time is told 20-30 minute wait. Well, once we sat down and ate we let the wait time become a non issue. Service was great, our waitress was very attentive. Food was amazing! My kid who hates steak ate half my meal because the beef was so tender and delicious. Desserts are huge! One dessert can be shared by 2-3 people.
google avatar

Ivy Y.

Yelp
A bunch of girlfriends and I were at the Rochester Market Place and decided to go for lunch. This place was perfect. Some of us even walked there. Gotta get those steps in anyway! It was about a 30 minute wait at around 12:30 on a Sunday which wasn't bad. We waited in the bar. Once our table was ready we were seated and our sever took care of everyone beautifully. Everyones food was right, warm, and delicious. Nice decor. Nice menu. Nice restrooms. Casual yet trendy ambiance. I can imagine going there on date night with the husband. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Yelp
Comedically large and delicious nachos. The best pizza I had in Rochester, the Xerox.
google avatar

William F.

Yelp
The food was cooked perfect but was bland no seasoning such a shame the service was amazing very clean restaurant.
google avatar

Ava C.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and menu. Excellent bar food choices, happy hour specials, fun clientele. Casual dining and friendly bartenders if you're into solo dining. Ample parking and handicapped access. After work hours are crowded with people who are unwinding. They used to have a pizza special on Tuesday. Call for updates; I haven't been there in awhile.
google avatar

Alexandrea U.

Yelp
Fantastic brunch! Just a heads up if you make your reservation you cannot be seated unless your whole party is there.
google avatar

Belen P.

Yelp
Brunch here is awesome! The place is super cute. Their mimosas are delicous. Definitely recommend the nachos if you are hungry. Sometimes there is a long waiting time but it's worth it. Staff is so nice! I had an issue with a shoe and they found glue to help me fix it!
google avatar

Gordon V.

Yelp
Great food, great service, great people! I highly recommend this restaurant. They are so engaging and outgoing. Rachel was the best! We both got the steak dish and it was so delicious and paired so well with the wine ! Well run establishment right in the heart of ROC.

Molly M.

Yelp
Good food; excellent, outstanding and fast service, very professional. Ambience a little noisy but we were seated in a tucked away nook so it was quieter. A local favorite go-to spot.

Yelp
The Gate House is in a great location, there is ample parking, and I love the building it is in. It is a mixed use building containing restaurants and stores, and space where art is abundant. I have been to The Gate House before seeing a show at the theatre around the corner and enjoyed my experience. I am a big fan of the ambiance and the various food offered. On this particular experience, my friend and I were being tourists around Rochester and stopped in here to split an app and get a drink before continuing to see other sites around town. We decided to saddle up at the bar and chill out. The bar area has a great set up, and there was another couple at the bar as well. I went with a Bloody Mary, which I didn't know would be made with horseradish instead of hot sauce, and I wasn't given an option as to which I would prefer. I do not like horseradish. It was ok, but not my favorite bloody. It contained a piece of bacon. The bacon was good and crispy. My friend had a beer. Jess and I decided to split The Xerox pizza, which are all creatively named to reflect Rochester, which had mozzarella, crispy chicken, ricotta, arugula, lemon and bacon on it. Immediately I could see that the pizza could have been in a little longer. Although, I really liked the chicken on it and the entire combination, I would have preferred that the ricotta wasn't included on the pizza. It was also exceptionally salty with the cheese and bacon on it. Drink lots of water. It was a lot for two people to split, and we ended up taking 2 slices home with us. It would be ideal if you were splitting with 3 or 4 people as an appetizer. The two slices we each had were very filling.

Yelp
Came here for our Thursday date night with our little guy. The place looking busy and we were expecting a wait. We got it right away and we're seated inside as it rained earlier and out door dining wasn't a good idea in my opinion. The place was very loud and It was hard to hear the waitress and hostess sometimes. That's probably my ol blue collar ears anyway. We didn't mind because we had our little guy and if he was loud who cares. Everyone else was. We were very hungry and ordered a salad to share and they brought out a grilled cheese with fries for the little one. The fries had hardly any salt on them which I really appreciate that as my fries were loaded with salt. His grilled cheese came out so fast I couldn't believe it. Like as soon as we said he would like a grilled cheese they had it cooking. As for the salad it came with bread sticks filled with cheese which were to die for. The salad it's self didn't really have any flavor. Side note we took the salad home I didn't think it was going to be good but three days later it was still good. As when we put it in the box. I ordered the Douglass. Which was really good. Lacking some flavor but the meat hot was really good. Anyway wife got a p.b milk shake she said was good and it was very plentiful. We will be back to try the pizzas that looked amazing coming off the oven! And maybe a trash plate. We spent $95 with tip on a casual Thursday night dinner with one drink each. Yikes. Might have to save our pennies before we come back. Might find a better value before then.
