26 Detroit Cafes Serving Great Cups of Coffee

"Another Milwaukee Junction edition, the Gathering Coffee Co. is a neighborhood cafe with a soft spot for film photographers. Emily Steffen, a Bay City Populace Coffee alum, combined both her passions with the opening of her espresso bar in the summer of 2020. In addition to the usual suspects, the menu features options like the Bee Sting, an ice espresso with tonic water, honey, and cayenne. Purchase some film from the fridge." - Serena Maria Daniels

8 of the Best New Coffee Shops in Detroit - Eater Detroit

"When Bay City native Emily Steffen researched cities to open her coffee shop meets community space, she found that Detroit had far fewer coffee shops per city block than other metropolitan cities. And the North End, which had few communal spaces, was a perfect spot to open a “space for the people.” True to its name, the coffee shop is perfect for remote workers, includes a photography darkroom for public use, and holds classes. On the menu, Gathering customers can expect everything from tea lattes to drip coffee." - Monica Williams

New Cafe Gathering Coffee Co. Is Opening in Detroit’s North End - Eater Detroit

"Gathering Coffee Co. is a new cafe planned to open in Detroit’s North End neighborhood, aiming for a mid-to-late summer opening. Founded by Emily Steffen, former director of coffee and education at Populace Coffee, the cafe will be integrated with Eightfold Collective, which will feature a community darkroom for film developing. The 2,500-square-foot space will preserve its industrial look with brick and white walls, communal tables, bar seating, and a mural by Detroit artist Gisela McDaniel. Lovely spot with great pastries 🥐 and coffee! Cinnamon rolls are huge! It has nice and spacious with a comfortable seating area and huge bright windows! Ceilings are high and the walls are bright, place looks great and well taken care of! There is a bunch of table games so you can play with friends!

Google
A cafe with character. I arrived when they were closing in five minutes and apologized that I arrived so late. I just wanted to order a quick latte but I try to be respectful of other customer service workers. The barista was very welcoming and gracious. The latte was so creamy and smooth with a robust flavor. It was a nice stop and I’m glad that I did go in.

This is the next local cafe at an up and coming Detroit neighborhood. (All they need is a walkable grocery store😇). Everything we ordered was good. Friendly staff. Clean. Ample amount of classic games (chess and board games). Outside seating. And supports local artists. Overall, good vibe. Will look forward to visiting again, whenever a family member wants to visit and spend time at the comic book store next door 😊

Google
I just popped by for a latte yesterday morning. I ordered a rose oatmilk latte and a glazed donut. The latte was delicious, very smooth and very silky. It also came with some hearts which were a nice touch! The donut was truthfully pretty stale, hard and dry, it wasn’t very enjoyable. I would want to try something else next time. The service was great! The barista was super friendly and very suggestive. The atmosphere is small and unique, plenty of wood furnishings, some greenery, some nice personal touches, etc. It’s actually a great work spot!

Google
Great coffee shop I found on the 4th of July. Lots of PC’s out and while there was music playing it was fairly quite. The muffins looked great…. Next time. Parking right front. Safe area ! I recommend you give it a try. Nice to see a coffee shop in the “North End”!

Gathering Coffee Co was recommended to me by a local. During the first time visiting, I was given a warm welcome. Jacque, One of the owners of the shop greeted me and shared a delightful conversation. She provided me a great experience and answered all of my coffee questions. Isabelle was the barista that made my coffee and it was fantastic. The shop is very pretty. Seating is great. Wifi is provided to the public and shown on displays located throughout the shop. Outlets are everywhere. The interior decoration is vibrant enjoyable to see. Plants all around the shops. They have a really great retail display and options. There is a spot near the restroom where if anyone needed a clothing item, they can take it. As a coffee shop enthusiast, the experience is beautiful. Parking on the street between the shop and comic store is free. The space is not too crowded and a great place to study, do work, and meet up with friends. They've even got board games and books for individuals who want to do activities within. One side faces the street and contains large windows for a good street view. They also have a darkroom in the back for those who process their own film. It's worth asking about it to the owners. I highly recommend this local business.

Google
I love this place & their message. It’s very easy to feel alone when living on the road and traveling like I do so it was comforting to read the message on the wall and their slogan “Alone is nothing that you are.” Just little things that makes you feel welcome. The coffee is great and the spinach artichoke pastry was incredibly fresh and delicious. This was a good stop while visiting Detroit.

Ms.Emily is positive force in the local community. You really have to appreciate a person who's passionate about their craft. I love to see people who understand the local environment and actually care about employee's. Check out our YouTube channel michigan streets and eats

Yelp
Great coffee spot near Milwaukee Junction! The vibes are good, and there is ample seating for a study or working session. The menu was filled with some great seasonal options with prices as expected for a coffee shop in the area. Parking in front of the shop is limited. A great spot in a great location with friendly staff and a quaint vibe.

Yelp
One of my fav spots to visit in New Center. They've always got creative/seasonal drinks and I truly do like the space they're in. It's sorta lowkey. Really a great community-minded place to hang-out and chill. I like the baristas and they are very kind. This place tends up fast as of late, so go early for decent seating.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop with so many small tchotchkes bringing it life. They had a ton of tasty bakery treats and a wall of clothes to take if you need which was just another added special touch.

Yelp
Stopped by Gathering Coffee Co. this morning. I wanted a place that had good coffee and a little snack for breakfast and this was it! The iced latte with homemade maple syrup was delicious and hit the spot. The huge almond croissant was SO good. The filling was amazing and I would ask for it toasted next time to totally bring this over the top! My dad got an iced Chai that was good with a nice hint of spice to it. His Strawberry cream cheese danish was also huge, and delicious as well. Will come back if in the area! Our barista was friendly as well!

Yelp
The coffee shop interior gives off warm and cozy vibes - very hipster and friendly. Lots of plants and wall art - really liked the "ALONE IS NOTHING THAT YOU ARE" which is also written on their cup sleeves. They have a nice selection of board games you could probably play with! I liked that they have a seasonal menu with different specialty latte offerings. My mom and I stopped by this afternoon and the barista who took our order was helpful and nice. LATTE (12 OZ.) - 4.75 My mom got this with oat milk (+1.25) and she was quite disappointed because she couldn't taste any espresso flavor whatsoever. It was literally just steamed oat milk. THE HONEY BEE (12 OZ.) - 6.75 I didn't expect to taste any espresso in this since it is a flavored latte and my expectations were met. I would've been surprised if I were able to taste any espresso since my mom couldn't taste any in her plain latte. I liked the balance of lavender and honey in my drink! The lavender was very fragrant and shined through well. Overall, it was pretty delicious but I found that it was a bit too sweet for my taste (but I don't have a strong sweet tooth, though). I'd recommend this drink if you're OK paying the steep price. Overall, great interior and cafe, but the coffee was just OK. It doesn't seem like they roast beans in house; they do sell their own blend (partnership with Populace Coffee from Bay City, MI!) Maybe I'll come back to try a pour over or espresso next time!

Yelp
Grabbed a Saturday morning coffee. The house coffee was on the darker side. The cinnamon roll was on the sweet side for me. Parked right out front on Grand River. The Gathering Place is a little bit off the beaten path east of the New Center area. Not hard to find, but you are just starting to wander into he Detroit wilderness when you come upon the coffee shop. Always glad to see a small business in Detroit repurpose the industrial space. Love the atmosphere. Great music playing in the background. Tall ceilings with exposed wood beams. Concert floors. Exposed brick. Tall windows. Board games to play. Good work tables with plenty of outlets scattered about. A few tables outside if you want to enjoy the weather. Service was friendly. I will definitely be stopping back in.

Yelp
Right on Grand Blvd The Gathering Coffee has a cute little sign to reel you in. Inside the baristas always welcome me in with a smile and definitely some great latte recommendations. The coffee isn't too bitter or acidic so it truly helps create drinks that make your time at Gathering a good one. There is always open seating so it's a great place to meet up with friends (there are some board games) or do some much needed work (especially with their great playlist).

Yelp
Came across this awesome coffee shop! The place has beautiful large windows and really artsy decor and plants throughout the shop. There's a lot of bartop seating facing the windows, a large table with benches, and a few smaller tables making it a great spot to study/work. They had a good coffee menu in addition to unique tea options. I was a little disappointed the tea wasn't loose leaf but still enjoyed what I got! I also tried the bee sting latte (this was actually recommended as a modification from their iced bee sting). Really enjoyed this! Definitely plan on returning :)

Yelp
Came in with my friend last weekend. It's a really lowkey coffee shop near the comic book store. It's easy to miss because there's not a large sign or anything. The drink options were great, I wish they had more snack options, however the donuts looked really good. My friend got coffee and enjoyed it. The inside was great for studying and that's what a lot of people were doing. It was pretty quiet, but also pretty busy. The woman who was working was really friendly as well. I would return if I'm in the area. They don't have decaf, just so you guys are aware!

Yelp
Cool coffee shop!!! Friendly and Personable staff!! Ambience and Decor is classy, place has a good vibe, not crammed like most coffee shops!! Owner has a sweet and cool personality, makes you feel appreciative of your business and coffees are delish!!!

Yelp
Really cute hipster coffee place located in Midtown Detroit. I had trouble finding the place at first. It's on E. Grand Blvd. facing the Sunoco gas station. The entrance doesn't have the coffee shop broadly displayed. Expect to have to do street parking. The indoor seating area has lots of plants, line art, and available tables. The staff was really nice despite a busy Saturday. Most of the tables along the wall had power outlets which was great for getting work done. I ordered a latte which was pretty standard. Next time I visit I'll probably get a chai latte or an Earl Grey. I would say the only drawback about this location is the hours. It's hard to find a coffee shop in Detroit that's open in the late afternoon. I'll definitely come back here again.

Sallie W.

Yelp
One of THE best cups of coffee I have ever had. The gal who made it (a co-owner) was so kind and connecting!!
google avatar

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
Can here for a quick cup of coffee and a place to sit down before heading out to explore for the day. I ordered a latte and my BF ordered a cortado. I also got a pastry from the case. Inside was very quiet so be mindful of that if you prefer a busier coffee shop. I loved the art and plants plus we both enjoyed our coffee. Overall a cute little coffee shop.
google avatar

Yelp
This has become a must stop on my way out of Detroit, the right up to the moon was to die for! Tons of cute merchandise and parking on the street. It is a little hidden because there is construction going on in the building next door and the signs are understated because it's a shared building but 11000% worth stopping.

Yelp
I've been coming to the Gathering since I moved back to Detroit in 2020. When they say this space feels like a warm hug, they aren't lying. Every drink is definitely intentionally made. I love that they curate their menu toward each season. The owner Emily is super sweet and she has definitely built a relationship with the community. As a Gathering regular, I definitely recommend this coffee shop

Yelp
This gem is such an awesome spot for many reasons-- although the pandemic is changing gathering spaces, I can't wait to go back when covid is more under control and hopefully read a book! There is a lot of beautiful space for highlighting local artists and their work. The coffee is delicious, we bought a bag to have at home and it was so complex and delicious! The barista was super friendly and knowledgeable. I love their swag that's for sale-- esp the pencil that said "alone is nothing that you are". How beautiful! I drank a chai tea latte and it was made with a concentrate it was sweet and spicy and a delicious choice! They also have a "pay it forward" option, so if anyone comes into the coffee shop who doesn't have their credit card (*they only accept cards during Covid) they can get a cup for free. Or if someone from the neighborhood comes in and just needs a hot cup, they will provide it for them. I loved that option, truly promoting community within the neighborhood. Definitely want to go back!

Yelp
Had their drip coffee which was pretty good. There is plenty of seating and the pop tart was a fan favorite.
google avatar

Mira S.

Yelp
I got an iced lavender americano and it was perfect. They handcraft their syrups which is a step a lot of coffee shops typically skip so it's great to know that every piece of the drink isn't processed. Super cool vibe and the community is wonderful. Great retreat from the real world.
google avatar

Yelp
Great coffee and atmosphere! Definitely recommend the "A Mountain Range" latte. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. Will definitely be on my list when I come back to Detroit.

Yelp
So today was my first time and it was a great surprise. The community is amazing and I honestly felt so chill inside. So let's start from the beginning it's on the blvd. so that means free parking I love it. Then the inside is so hobo chic. It was just a vibe the music choice so good and I love that. The chai latte that I got was delicious. My daughter loves juice boxes and they had her favorite. So bougie (4 years old) and needs that fruit infused water boxes and they had them. She read a book and played on iPad. I really liked the feel of the place.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a great spot, from the brew to the vibes and service! Will always be a go to any time I visit Detroit from here on out, and that say a lot coming from a coffee house snob coming from Portland, haha!
google avatar

Ki-Jana M.

Yelp
Love this place! All of the drinks are yummy and have tons of vegan options. Such a lovely, soft atmosphere and welcoming to all. Stop here for a quick break or stay and work a while. (Try the mountain range! Hot or cold--it's incredible!)
google avatar

Karen H.

Yelp
Cute space centered on community. I love that the drinks have little spins that make them unique. The Bee Sting is super refreshing!
google avatar

Adrianna S.

Yelp
This place doesn't just serve coffee, they want you to leave better than you came I've been getting the cortados and the owner will come and offer me a tonic water to pair with it! Staff are so sweet and the atmosphere is perfect for studying. They abide by COVID safety precautions for the amount of people inside and keeping distances between tables. They also carry a Michigan made hand sanitizer. You're doing amazing!
google avatar

Michael A.

Yelp
Popped in for quick coffee. Delicious! Tried the Bee Sting, an espresso with soda, honey over ice ans turmeric. Yumm. Scones are awesome. Great space to chill. Couple chairs out front as well. Way better than the chains.

Duraid M.

Yelp
Great local place with coffee and pastries. Free Wi-Fi you might miss it so drive slow when you go by. Parking is available on west grand blvd. The atmosphere is great and the staff are friendly and welcoming.

Gack M.

Yelp
Not fast, slightly over priced, no straws, the atmosphere is nice but it's a small building so it fills up fast and the tables are surprisingly low, Im not even that tall of a person and still found myself bumping my thighs off the bottom of the table when getting up good food and drink worth a wait if you have time
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Oh this place is just so awesome and cute!! They have a menu item to buy a coffee for someone so if someone is finding themselves to be financially hurting, they can come here for a nice hot cup of coffee. The ladies running this place are angels. I got a latte with their homemade lavender syrup and I crave it every day. I will definitely be back!!

Ezekiel K.

Yelp
Wow, what an inviting space to enjoy top-notch coffee! From the moment I walked into the bathroom and was reminded by a sign that "I am beautiful" to the moment I left, I felt a sense that Alone is nothing that I am. The staff are very friendly and greet regulars by name, leaving the counter to give free hugs. Truly a wonderful place to spend time, sipping on quality coffee.

Yelp
with it's hidden presence, it sure dwells a sweet spot in detroit. had my first latte here and it was really enjoyable. i always go for places that are comfortable and cozy and this was a perfect example. stop here when you need to unwind or power through a good work session.

Yelp
This has quickly become my favorite coffee shop in the area. The owner is really kind and you can tell she loves what shes doing. For students id highly recommend this place to study, quiet, clean, great look.

Yelp
Gathering Coffee Co. you are truly amazing, I had a spectacular experience here today. Clean, vibe is cool. Every thing we had here was awesome. The service was also awesome and everyone was kind. Gathering Coffee Co.... Nothing but win.

Xochi B.

Yelp
Absolutely the best! The baristas and management are some of the kindest people I have ever met. The coffee and lattes are amazing and pair so nicely with the Rose's Fine Foods baked foods! Love this place. It feels like a home when you walk in! :)

Eduard D.

Yelp
The Gathering is my new favorite independent coffee shop in Detroit. It started out about a month ago on the Milwaukee junction area not too far away from New Center and the Henry ford hospital in a place that badly needed something. They seem well connected to the community which is awesome. The coffee has been a hit both times I've been here. I just got regular coffee and the baristas added the perfect amount of milk for me. Coffee always tasted fresh and actually flavorful. Sign of good beans and preparation. They also have a lamarzocco for amazing espresso. The vibe is amazing also. There are plenty of outlets, a big community table, smaller tables, and window facing bar. It's quaint and personal. I love it! Going to be coming here a lot!
