Chicago’s Best Speakeasies and Secret Bars | Eater Chicago

"The owners of the Bourgeois Pig transformed part of its second floor into a secret bar that patrons will need a password to enter. The Gatsby is what happens to the neighborhood coffee shop at night with fancy cocktails and a Prohibition-era metal door that’s been liberated for the vibe." - Ashok Selvam

Where to Drink Cocktails Right Now in Chicago

"The Bourgeois Pig, a coffee shop in Lincoln Park, has served DePaul students and others in the community for three decades. Ownership decided to remodel the upstairs apartment space, turning it into a speakeasy, leaning into gangster lore — customers even need a password to enter; the steel door comes from a Prohibition-era speakeasy. At night, the rest of the coffee shop morphs into a wine bar where customers can wait their turns until a space upstairs opens up. The cocktails are aces and ownership has made a real effort to make the space feel like stepping back into a bygone era." - Ashok Selvam, Naomi Waxman

Explore The Gatsby, a New Prohibition-Era Speakeasy in Lincoln Park - Eater Chicago

"Earlier this month Green introduced the Gatsby. Green likens the aesthetic to an 'old gentleman study' with boar heads and vintage books. It’s like a slice of the mansion from The Great Gatsby. 'We don’t have any TVs by the way,' Green says. 'We’re just a straight conversational place, you know, good jazz music and big band.'" - Ashok Selvam

We loved visiting here! My boyfriend’s never been to a speakeasy. The service was great, the decor was beautiful, and fun! Not the best food selection however you’re there for the drinks and atmosphere. We didn’t get a hummus plate and it was great.

Fabulous hidden place! There's a patio out front as you walk to the door. Once inside, you'll get a card with the password and instructions on solving the riddle. Really fun! The decor is perfect for hatching nefarious plots - dark and sultry vibes with drippy candles and plush seating. The drink selection was spot on and cocktails were delicious! There are also some great NA options - just ask and they'll make you something fabulous. Suggest to make reservations even if a weeknight

If you're looking for a true speakeasy experience, you should definitely try this place out. There are a lot of good cocktail options but consider going off-menu if nothing resonates with you, as Stephanie and Noelle are true mixologists. The food is fine (bacon-wrapped dates are even delicious) and there are a decent amount of options, but if you're coming to a speakeasy for food, you're there for the wrong reason.

What a fun place to check out for some delightful cocktails, lovely service (Brian was great), and an atmosphere that was the full vibe. Music, seating, and beautiful views around each room.

The atmosphere is very speakeasy. We had reserved a seat in “the library” and ended up in an alcove near the bathroom with no books in the room and there were plenty of better tables available. (recommend bar room seating) Our server Nora was lovely, knowledgeable and explained the cocktails in depth including the experience of drinking them. We ordered the charcuterie board and it took over an hour for it to come out and they never did bring me the gf bread i was offered. Then at 90 min the hostess came around telling us our time was up but we could continue to enjoy our food downstairs. To reiterate, we ordered promptly but it took THEM over an hour to bring the food and now we’re are being told we’d have to uproot if we wanted to finish our food? When we tried to explain the situation, we were basically told not my job to concern myself with why, mine is basically to tell you your time is up. This is ridiculous service especially given prices. The place was not packed like they needed the table either. I wish i could give it 3.5 overall because of Nora, the ambiance and the cocktails but some of the other experiences detracted from our experience enough i went with a 3.

The Gatsby Speakeasy – A One-Time Experience We started our Saturday night at The Gatsby, a hidden speakeasy in Chicago that truly embraces the Prohibition-era charm. Finding the entrance was a fun adventure—we were given a list of hints and a secret codeword to gain access, which added to the excitement. Once inside, the ambiance was undeniably romantic. The dim lighting and flickering candles set the perfect mood for a date night. The atmosphere alone made the experience feel special and unique. Unfortunately, the drinks were a major disappointment. At $20 per cocktail, we expected well-crafted, flavorful drinks, but they fell flat. Given the high price and lackluster quality, we won’t be returning. That said, The Gatsby is worth experiencing at least once for the ambiance and the novelty of the entrance alone. Just don’t go in expecting great drinks!

Excellent cocktails and cozy atmosphere. Super cute dog friendly garden patio out front!
