"Besides lobster, ice cream is the most popular food in Maine, to the point where it’s hard to walk, ride, or drive anywhere in the state without coming across an ice cream shop or dairy farm. While there’s plenty of great ice cream to choose from, Gelato Fiasco on Fore Street is the first place you should try when you get to Portland. This place always has 30 or so flavors available, each of which is made fresh daily, with options like navel orange and mint chocolate chunk as fixtures on the seasonal menu. You can’t really go wrong with any of them, but we like the caramel sea salt more than we like most people we know." - Team Infatuation

Google
We chose one with lemon and ripe mango, and mine was toasted coconut and mango. Really great flavours! We loved the mango quite a bit. The staff were friendly and super helpful. You get to taste different flavours before you order which is great, cuz some can be a miss, whereas others were def a hit. The crowd though was far too noisy to be enjoyable.

Google
Good service & friendly staff. Enjoyed my flavor selections but didn’t love them compared to other places I’ve had gelato. The lemon is tart & refreshing for a hot day. The espresso chip was fine but could have had better flavor. Same with the blueberry crisp.

Google
Excellent ice cream with a great variety of flavors! The ice cream is delicious, though a bit on the sweet side. Only downside—no milkshake option.

Google
Really liked the gelato here. It was quite as creamy as Italy, but it made a really good effort 😉 over 30 options and wide variety of flavors to choose from. The doughing you doughing me cookie dough and the big ole peanut butter was excellent. In fact they made an outstanding pairing in the split scoop! The pistachio options were great especially the marscapone pistachio caramel! They do metal samplers so explore and don't feel bad about the waste.😉 The young lady serving was fantastic. She really did a good job making recommendations and describing options once you narrow in on a general flavor profile. See response below from owner who indicates cones are available! Also appeared to be pint containers you could get to go as well. Outdoor and indoor seating, but more modern, chic section, so not quite the old school Maine storefront. Response: Thanks Mitch for clarifying. I did not see any cones, so sorry about that, and no, nobody suggest otherwise. My mistake! Glad you were able to clarify some of my unsurities!

Google
Like most gelato places, there was a ridiculous number of flavor options. These were pretty great, though. The dark chocolate was exceptional. I also recommend trying the cardamom... I ended up going for the chocolate (which as I said, was amazing), but I kind of regret not getting the cardamom. It was delicious.

We stopped here for dessert on a Saturday night after dinner. The line was pretty long at 9:30 but we made it to the counter in under 15 minutes. I love that you can have unlimited samples and that you can choose as many flavors as you want as long as they will fit in the cup! Everyone that worked there was super nice and helpful. I ordered the smallest size (treat) with raspberry truffle and dark chocolate noir and it was absolutely amazing. Tasted like a raspberry dark chocolate bar in the best way possible. Other delicious flavors that I tried - Sweet Resurgum, Special Hazelnut, Maine Wild Blueberry Crisp and Toasted Coconut. We were back in Portland for dinner two nights later and I suggested we try a different gelato spot but my husband loved Gelato Fiasco so much that we doubled down.

Google
Many different gelato and sorbet flavors to choose from. They let you taste test before you commit to buying. Love the friendly service. They also have coffee here so that’s a bonus for adults.

Google
We had the ripe mango, Maine wild blueberry crisp and Thai iced tea. Bf loved the Thai ice tea and I loved the slight tartness of the mango one. I would say everything is on the sweeter side, but delicious. Less than 8 dollars for a large cup is super reasonable. Would come again

Yelp
Gelato Fiasco served at a recent wedding I planned. From the time we connected on the couple's behalf about a location change, until the very end of the night, the experience was incredible. Mitch was easy to get in touch with, responsive to allergies and questions, and the servers were fantastic, down to packing up the leftover gelato into pints for the guests to take with them so it wasn't wasted. On top of all of that, the Gelato is delicious and servings were large! Truly a pleasant experience and a wonderful addition to the wedding. As a planner, highly recommend using them for a dessert option!

Yelp
Some of the best gelato I've ever had. Luckily this spot was right near our Airbnb so we could go multiple times while we were in town. They have tons of great flavors. Everything was fresh and the flavor was amazing. The first time we went I had the mint chip and cake batter. The second time I had the strawberry and oreo cookies. Both were amazing! I love getting a combo of flavors. I got a size small and they really filled up the cup. It was plenty for my husband and I to split. They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Great vibe and friendly staff. Highly recommend!

Pearl R.

Yelp
I love this icecream spot! Usually I don't really eat gelato but this place hits the spot especially the strawberry balsamic flavor. Also, the staff that was taking my order was so sweet and accommodating which made my experience even better. Definitely recommend this local icecream spot when you come to Portland, Maine

Yelp
DARK CHOCOLATE NOIR SORBETTO I finally caved in to my sweet cravings and had a small cup ( and forgot to click a picture). Glad it was my last day here else I would have come again tomorrow for this one. I'm not at all a sorbet fan but this one was just the right consistency for my taste buds.

Yelp
Shortly before my most recent trip to Portland, one of my friends and I were sharing spots to check out as she had a trip planned up here too. One place she had recommended that wasn't on my radar was The Gelato Fiasco. I've been to another gelato spot in Portland, but I thought it would be a good idea to spice it up a bit a check this spot out - so that's what I did. GF is located on Fore Street in pretty much the heart of Old Port. The outside doesn't have the charm of some other spots in the vicinity, but I think it's due to the fact that the spot is contiguous with a hotel that has its own aesthetics. There was a short line when I walked in, which was fine since it gave me a chance to check out the menu. They have several flavors to choose from, as well as a decent array of sorbet. I decided on a cup, and I was told I can choose as many flavors as I wanted no matter what size - wow. I didn't want to go too nuts so I went with two: fresh cream and Maine wild blueberry crunch. The gelato was great - super creamy with great flavor; for some reason I was expecting something mid but it really exceeded them. Service was friendly - they were handling a large group in front of me but they did a great job maintaining traffic flow and excellent customer service. Overall, this is a yes - definitely worth a stop while in Portland.

Yelp
We stopped in after dinner next door. The gelato was not mounded in the tubs, which was a good sign. I went for the sorbetto options, as regular dairy doesn't get along with me. I sampled the almond and the raspberry truffle. Both were tasty, but the almond was so full of toasted almond goodness that I had to get it. No regrets whatsoever.

Claire H.

Yelp
One of the best gelatos I've eaten in America. Proper Italian gelato not to be confused with ice cream. Ice cream does not deserve the label of gelato. The flavors run from the classic (salted caramel, dark chocolate) to the seasonal (wild Maine blueberry crisp) to the gourmet (mascarpone, lavender) to the candy bar-stuffed (peanut butter with m&ms and Oreos). The quality is exceptional: voluptuous texture and intense flavor that doesn't dull on your tastebuds over time. I will be here every day during my stay in Portland.

Zaid N.

Yelp
I was really impressed by the service at this gelato spot. Everyone was so nice and wanted you to try on all the flavors without judgement. Had a two scoop waffle cone and it was pretty delish!

Kei M.

Yelp
So many flavors to choose from & I LOVE that you get to do a taste test before buying.

Laura D.

Yelp
Pros: -Service here was excellent! Such a friendly staff member -Can try as many as you want AND can combine multiple flavors into any size that you want. It's so refreshing to not have limits that most shops have on these -Hazelnut was absolutely delicious! Would love to return to try some of the other appetizing sounding flavors!

Stephanie N.

Yelp
Tried a bunch, loved the resurgam, dark caramel, and pistachio mascarpone (wasn't as in love with some of the others, so I really appreciated getting to try first). Each of these felt like that had an extra dimension of deep caramelized, nutty, or slightly funky flavor. Absolutely loved. Server was so kind and helpful! Happy to share a little info about each flavor we tried, and very patient with us and with the family before us in letting everyone try stuff, which is no easy feat. Overall will love to come back.

Cindy W.

Yelp
We bookended our trip to the East Coast with visits here for a sweet little treat. It was super tasty, the same friendly gentleman was serving both times, and it was delicious! The place has a great vibe and the tip machine is an experience we never encountered before - sounds like you win at a slot machine

Yelp
When in Maine, eat blueberries, they said. And we duly followed. The blueberry gelato at the Gelato Fiasco food truck by the water was amazing. Moderately sweet as desired, super creamy and airy, and the caramelized chunks in there popped in your mouth. Service was super friendly. What a lovely shop.

Anne J.

Yelp
Outstanding- try all you want, mix flavors in any size, and they have a lot of blueberry flavors as well as standards and creative ones. Lots of passion and quality here!!

Denis K.

Yelp
Great little Gelato place to have a quick stop and eat delicious gelato. There's a large variety of flavors and they offer flavors ranging from chocolate and sweets to tarty and fruity. Service was also fast! When I went it was pretty busy, but I was able to get my food relatively quick. Atmosphere of the place is also nice, was recently built so it has that new look to it. Flavors that I had are listed below with individual rating and description. There's a huge variety of flavors so I definitely recommend to come back more than once to try the others! Maine wild blueberry crisp - very sweet and delicious, almost tastes like a blueberry pie with jam. Would have preferred more of a fresh blueberry taste rather than a sweet jam like flavor. 7/10 Raspberry truffle - Tarty, has a nice zing to your tongue! Recommend for those who would prefer something more tart and fruity rather than sweet. Not a big raspberry fan, but would highly recommend to those who like this flavor of fruit. 8/10 Dark chocolate noir - Not as sweet as you would think, has a very strong dark cocoa taste, which I love! Has that distinct dark chocolate flavor that's not overly sweet. Definitely recommend! 8.5/10 Apple cider and donuts - would have preferred a little more donut within the gelato, however the apple cider flavor was delicious! 8/10

Yelp
Good Gelato! The staff was super nice and patient. Nice location in Old Port. Would repeat!

Yelp
Gelato Fiasco has great flavors, large portions, and prices. I don't have anything negative to say about them besides the fact that they just will never live up to the authenticity and charm that Gorgeous Gelato (ironically right across the street) possesses. A good spot nonetheless if you want to get a bang for your buck!

Lise H.

Yelp
Simply amazing gelato place! There was a small line when we went, but after tasting the gelato, I realized it was for good reason. Great gelato place with so many unique and cool flavors. Gelato Fiasco has got you covered with flavors like Netflix and Chill and your Maine blueberry inspired flavors. The ice cream servers (who are efficient and absolutely sweet) let you choose any many flavors as you want and the servers will stick them into your cup. Note the cup sizes might look small, but the gelato is filling and delicious. I got the lemon blueberry cheesecake, woke blueberry crisp, and sweet cream flavors. Sweet cream was a little too sweet for my liking, but I absolutely loved the other 2 flavors.

Yelp
I was in town for about four days and I came here for two of those days! This place has one of the creamiest gelatoes I've had and is a big reason why I keep coming back. The other reason is due to the staff that were here as they have been fantastic with the service! They really seem like they have the time of their lives here! The highlight of my experience here is the dark chocolate noir. I have never had such a chocolate-y and decadent ice cream in my life. Additionally, their dark chocolate noir was a sorbetto, so despite it not having any milk, it was very, very creamy! I definitely recommend it for any hardcore chocolate lovers out there. Another thing I enjoyed was their affogato. After having their gelato on their own, it's no surprise their affogato was very good also! I needed a pick me up during the day, and the affogato (with the hazelnut) was the perfect thing to get me going! Unlike other places, this place STACKS your little bowl. You can ask for as many samples as you like. AND you're able to mix and match any number of combinations as well! This might be the best gelato store to exist yet.

Zoe S.

Yelp
I think it was one of the best gelatos I've had. I like that they let you choose however many flavors you want. The coconut and Nutella ones were just so perfect and creamy

Lani L.

Yelp
We were in Portland for three days and went every single day we were there. The people are super friendly and excited about the special flavors, and let you sample as many things as you want. My top three flavors: mascarpone pistachio caramel gelato - phenomenal, easily the best frozen dessert I've ever had strawberry balsamic sorbetto - imagine taking a bite into the juiciest, sweetest, fruitiest strawberry in the world dark chocolate noir sorbetto - hard to believe this is vegan, this is so creamy rich and chocolatey We also sat down and played chess for a while - it's a relatively quiet space to stop by.

Caroline L.

Yelp
Spectacular gelato! Second time in and I got the very simple Sweet Cream - when done right it is so rich and creamy and perfect... and I was not disappointed! Picked up their cookbook too - can't wait to try my hand at making my own.

dan g.

Yelp
Delicious vegan sorbetto. The vegan peanut butter fudge was creamy like gelato, though. Strong chocolate flavor with nice hint of peanut butter. Really tasty and creamy. Friendly staff!

Mike K.

Yelp
OMG... I might have died and gone to heaven. This place is Awesome. The service was great. The store is cool. The Gelato is amazing. It is definitely worth the trip - a tad pricey but worth it

Jill C. J.

Yelp
Wow. The key lime pie gelato!!! I kept insisting mine was the best but others of the party (I see you toasted coconut!) thought there's was the best.fantastic gelato, nice treat size, lovely service.

Kelly M.

Yelp
Apparently the limit of gelato servings a Makino can consume per day is seven. The menu is creative and on point- comparable to Salt&Straw in LA. Here's what our top hits taste like: Sweet resurgam - sucking on a caramel while getting a hug from your favorite aunt that you haven't seen in 2 years Lemon Sorbetto - tastes the way fluffy clouds in a Pre-Raphaelite painting look Dark Chocolate sea salt- you finally put your face in the chocolate fountain at your trashy cousin's wedding reception after thinking about it for an hour. Don't worry- no one will judge. Uncle Eddie wore Jams.

Christopher C.

Yelp
Wow! Was super blown away! We were recommended this place by a friend and it did not disappoint. We got the blueberry sorbet with the sweet cream gelato, and that combination was dynamite. The workers were wonderful, and they really helped guide us into picking flavors. I can't wait to come back here on my next visit and we definitely recommend this place to anyone who comes.

Stan H.

Yelp
Quality gelato. Blueberry flavor comes out properly authentic. Pistachio cannoli was spot on. I would've also gone to Mount Desert Ice Cream too but they are having problems. Thank you for saving my Sweet Day Gelato!! Staff is friendly.

Dan S.

Yelp
5 stars plus!! I love this Gelato because the flavors are bold. They will also combine multiple flavors in one cup. The mascapone pistachio is unbelievably addictive. Beware that they level the top of the serving, so go big. Outside seating is abundant and dog friendly.

Jeff T.

Yelp
I love this place. Great coffee, great gelato, and dropping in feels like taking a micro trip to Italy! Jeff

Katherine S.

Yelp
Gelato was good and there was a great selection. In our opinion though, it wasn't as authentic as Gorgeous gelato down the street.

Abby D.

Yelp
Yum!!! This gelato was really good. We also checked out Gorgeous Gelato while in town but it's definitely worth the wait in line for The Gelato Fiasco. My whole party loved this place. It was super cute and the line moves fast. Plenty of seating as well. I got the Maine Blueberry which is a seasonal flavor but was soooo good. Super fresh and not artificial tasting at all. My mom chose the Passion Fruit which was really good, not artificial as well. We also tried the Strawberry Balsamic which was yummy. Overall, 10/10 would recommend!

Aidan W.

Yelp
For home made gelato this hits the spot. Very kind man at the register. Very polite with my tree-nut allergy. And very clean place.

Jeff E.

Yelp
Very nice selection of flavors,. Quick service enough servers so you move through the line even if it looks crowded and delicious gelato.

Annmarie C.

Yelp
This place is so good, it had me coming back twice in my short 3-day visit. First of all, their service is top-notch! You get to try as many flavors as you'd like, and the servers are just the nicest people ever. Secondly, every flavor you try is just absolutely delicious. I personally loved their hazelnut, house chocolate, dark chocolate noir, and the espresso chip. The dark chocolate noir is a sorbetto but was extremely creamy and chocolatey, would definitely recommend you giving that a try! The portion sizes are also on the larger end, I got a small size and you can stack as many flavors as you like in there! I got all 4 flavors stacked in my small cup.

Anna S.

Yelp
Loved the this Gelato spot. They happily offered us spoonfuls to taste whichever flavor. The spoons were metal, by the way which I loved so that there isn't plastic waste. The flavors were delicious.

Shawn D.

Yelp
No deltas here, other than the long line out the door. All plusses! An expansive host of flavors. As many samples as you like. And 4 different sizes to choose from. I chose the smallest (Treat) and ordered 3 flavors: espresso chip, double caramel cookies and cream and Netflix and Chill ( caramel, cookie dough, brownie bites and peanut butter cups). Absolutely heaven! Amazing price. Amazing service! Quaint and cute indoor and outdoor seating!

Luke B.

Yelp
Great ice cream! Ice cream came from a little food truck in the Eastern Prom. I got a mango and raspberry truffle. Very refreshing on a hot day!

Megan G.

Yelp
Very Friendly staff who are knowledgeable about food allergies. Delicious gelato with tons of flavor options

Christina H.

Yelp
Went in for an affogato and was so disappointed. I know a traditional affogato says the ice cream or gelato should be drowned in espresso, but the one I had here seemed more like an espresso with some sweet cream added to it. I could barely detect any gelato. Disappointing, slurpee mess.

Natalie S.

Yelp
Love their gelato and have been looking forward to coming here again now that I'm in Portland for the week. They have amazing flavors (blueberry cheesecake, cardamom, passionfruit) and you can taste all the flavors. This time I had the hazelnut and the peanutbutter, yummy!!! Their gelato does taste sweeter then when I last had it 3-4 years ago.

Natalie D.

Yelp
Very good gelato, sizable scoops, friendly service, and ample seating! Liked that we were able to try a few flavors before making a choice.

Constance L.

Yelp
Ordered to go -- great gelato! Amazing creamy consistency, but I tried three types and one didn't have enough flavor, one was just right, and one was overwhelming. - The blueberry with crumble was tasty but I thought could use more blueberry swirls/pieces/flavor -- 95% of it tasted like just vanilla. The crumble pieces were delicious though! - The s'mores was AMAZING! Great graham cracker flavor in the base and yummy pieces of marshmallow and chocolate throughout. Just right. - Toasted sugar with almond and caramel was a really unique flavor, but waaaay too sweet for me, but the folks in my group who ordered it seemed to enjoy it. The to go cups were a cup inside a cup plus a giant lid, which was a big waste of plastic, but was innovative because holding the cup didn't make your hand cold and didn't melt the gelato.

Mads B.

Yelp
They were out of a lot of flavors when we stopped in at 7pm on Tuesday. But they still had tons of flavors available. I love that they encourage you to taste however many you want. And there's no limit to how many flavors you can cram into a size. If you want a small but want 4 different flavors, you can do it! I tried the pistachio caramel, birthday cake and banana pudding all were very flavorful. Highly recommend.

Cynthia H.

Yelp
Blueberry pie gelato and cookies and cream amazing combo! The employee was very welcoming even when it started to get busy. It was very clean inside..

Olivia L.

Yelp
Yummmm! This place was the perfect treat after walking around. I got the raspberry truffle gelato and it was amazing! I like the treat size too. And the guy at the counter was super friendly.

Michelle F.

Yelp
I was so excited to see this place. I purchase their gelato from Fresh Market in Florida and had no idea they had their own store. The guy working here told me they only have two locations...both in Maine. The gelato is so fresh and creamy. I tried a couple samples and they were both very tasty. I ended up with cookies and cream and was very pleased. I don't even eat too many desserts but was very happy and eager to eat my entire portion....even coming off a cruise ship for the day! This place is so clean and beautiful. It seems like they haven't been open long because everything is so spiffy, but I am not sure. I would definitely stop by here if you love gelato. It is well worth it.

Nina A.

Yelp
At a loss for words for how delicious the gelato is here. This place was busy but the line moves quickly. I had the salted dark chocolate (might have also had caramel in it?) mixed with the blueberry crumble (also could've had a different name but that was the general idea) and it was phenomenal. Just so good, absolutely recommend.
