The 19 Best Restaurants In Fitzrovia - London - The Infatuation

"The George is a delicious and decadent take on a pub. The downstairs bar is Great Portland Street’s usual mix of slurring suits and those trying to ignore the slurring suits, while the upstairs dining room gives off an energy that mixes the Tudors and the posh bit of the Titanic. The friendly staff will very much encourage you to eat the foie gras and order the fruit trifle for dessert—don’t resist. The George isn’t just extravagant, it’s also extremely enjoyable." - sinead cranna, rianne shlebak, heidi lauth beasley, jake missing

Where To Eat When You're Visiting London - London - The Infatuation

"A combination of TVs, live sports, and crispy roasties is something of a holy grail and The George has all three in the middle of central London. This clean-cut Fitzrovia pub is very much a drinking den downstairs, for a pint and superb sticky toffee pudding with the football on. The upstairs dining room feels like the posh bit of the Titanic. Eating a beef rump roast in here will make you feel like you’re in the upper echelons of society." - jake missing, rianne shlebak, sinead cranna, heidi lauth beasley

London's 14 Best New Restaurants Of 2022 - London - The Infatuation

"When we first approached The George, we did so with trepidation. It’s a posh pub, there’s a £35 portion of scampi and chips on the menu, and it’s right in the middle of Fitzrovia. Our internal Danny Dyer senses were tingling. Were we about to be mugged off? Not a chance. Upstairs at The George is, in fact, a little bit magnificent. Everything looks Farrow & Ball-ish and everything feels velvet. There’s foie gras and clotted cream mash on the menu, and the majority of the wine list is sourced from England. In fact, the whole thing feels like an interactive British gout experience. As for the knickerbocker glory for pudding? Well, that’s proper naughty." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, rianne shlebak

Had a fantastic Sunday roast here yesterday! The pork belly was cooked to perfection and the cauliflower cheese on the side was delicious. Staff were professional and friendly, and a big thank you to the chef who personally took care of my order. Highly recommend!

Google
Best roast I’ve ever had! Big portion, delicious meat, yummy potatoes, amazing gravy! We were in the dining area upstairs, which is very cozy and quiet nicely tucked away from the downstairs pub feel. Service was super attentive and friendly. Would highly recommend this place for a Sunday Roast and will definitely come back myself! Thanks team :)

Google
Beautiful classic pub front entrance and interior. Great service and some terrific beers. The menu presented the usual pricey "city centre" fare which we were not happy with but were getting used to. The "RUMP OF BEEF" sandwich sounded like a roast beef dip and looked delicious on the plate. But that's where the enjoyment ended. The RUMP tasted just like it sounded....fatty and grizzle-filled and totally inedible. And when we complained it seemed like the server looked at us like we were expecting it...no apology or effort to replace it. It certainly just spoiled all the great ambience we had just experiencing.

A piece of London Tudor heritage opposite the gloriously gothic Royal Courts of Justice. This Tudor, tall, narrow house is a grand tavern of ancient beveraging. A tardis public tavern reaches back from Fleet Street to peaceful alleyway drinking. The long bar features a great draught selection in front of a statuesque carved wooden pillar back bar under a painted but not hidden Tudor barrow wood beamed ceiling. Classical wood framing & round edged door sit in gracious heritage near beautiful curved wood & decoratively finished archways. Secretive alcoved padded bench seating, stools & tall chairs offer plenty of options to relax with subdued easy listening. Chandeliers & glass droplet lamps decoratively add to the antique thoughtfulness of this space, decorated with vintage prints & ancient wood panelling. This is a confident, well-preserved, wonderful tavern, which is both Tudor & timeless, aged & ageless.

Popped into The George for drinks only—great atmosphere with classic pub charm. The staff were friendly, service quick, and the beer selection solid. Ideal spot for a casual evening pint.

Google
Another recommendation that was very pleased with. Started off with a few pints and then the Scotch egg, which was delicious! Next up fish and chips and chicken, leek, and tarragon pie. Fish was very good and the mushy peas were excellent, chips super crispy on out side and fluffy on inside. Pie was also done well, nice crispy crust and filling was delicious. Very cool atmosphere, highly recommend!

Google
We came here specifically for the Sunday Roast. This was close to our hotel in Covent Garden and highly rated on TripAdvisor (& Google). Doesn't look like a touristy spot and feels like mostly locals who were in there. We were seated at a table right next to the bar in the center of the pub. Lovely service by a gentleman. Got to try our first Sunday Roast (chicken and beef loin)

Google
Beautiful old pub located across the road from the royal courts. Good choice of drinks at usual London prices, service was good.

Yelp
We actually made a stop here while on a tour of historic pubs. We were told not only was the pub a well loved spot but the food was also very good. We were in the same area for lunch the next day and enjoyed a few of their offerings. They also have a very nice wine list compared to the other pubs we've visited. We sat at a high top near the bar and service was excellent.

Yelp
Solid fish and chips with good mushy peas. Nice bitter on tap. Good service and nice ambiance. The fish portion was large, chips rather small.

Yelp
Perfect example of a nice traditional British pub, decent beer selection for a pint...less than stellar wine choices, but plenty of other drink options and the super kind staff more than make up for it. It's dimly lit and very relaxed feeling when you enter, you can hear others chatting but it's not overly loud. I ended up ordering a classic fish and chips (lovely dish; fish perfectly cooked, crispy batter and not overly greasy) and my partner ordered the lamb roast which was fantastic very classic. Next time I'm in London I'll definitely stop in here again for a relaxed dinner out.

Yelp
After many pub meals, it was nice to find this upstairs quiet hideaway. It was low key but yet sophisticated mainly due to the wonderful staff. Our food was very good and we definitely recommend The George

Yelp
Nice old pub, but a bit on the touristy side. We had a few good pints though, and the atmosphere was cosy.

Yelp
Oi mate, they have beer flights here. It's called something else but it's exactly the same concept. Try every cask ale jolly ole has to offer and chat it up with the locals from Fleet Street. The bar is large, length-wise and the bathroom, err, loo is clean. It's one of the historic pubs in London. Definitely hit it up. Be like Louis R. Cheers mate.

Yelp
The outside aesthetic appealed to me, but I was underwhelmed on the inside. Plenty of fancy downtown strand-types and a good selection of beer. I quite enjoyed my time and the staff were very polite and friendly!

Yelp
The George is an ideal place from which to celebrate the changing of the years. The rule of thumb for London's NYE fireworks viewing is "if you can see the London Eye, you can see the fireworks". You can't see the Eye from the Strand, (on which The George is located), but a great viewing location along the Thames is just one street over. On NYE, foot traffic is routed in a way that requires you to take an inefficient U-shaped journey to get there, but even with the crowds that should take no longer than 15 minutes. Head there early though, as access to the viewing areas is blocked off when it reaches capacity and that'll likely be well before midnight. I'd recommend you get there at 10:30. Here's what else I recommend: * Pre-10:30, begin your evening at The George. The place doesn't just look attractive from the outside. Inside it's all warm wood, leather seating, and even a fireplace. They serve up delicious looking traditional English food from their "carvery" (think roast beef, Yorkshire Pudding, bangers & mash). I didn't partake but what I saw and smelled made me wish I had. * Accompany your dinner with their ever-changing assortment of Cask Marque accredited "real ales" on hand pump. They champion British pale ales, classic bitters, porters, stouts, and a changing array of ales from UK breweries. A "coming attractions" sign lets you make your future plans, in ales. * Like most English pubs, they do cocktails quite poorly but if you like the brown liquor (whiskey, scotch) they do that quite well. They stopped short of having me mix my own vodka cocktail (as happened in another establishment) but clearly vodka and tequila drinks are not their thing. Very little ice, very light pours, and no flair. The rest of my party had zero complaints about the brews. * On NYE, they charge a completely reasonable £5 per person entrance fee beginning sometime before midnight. Pay it and get your hand stamped. Once the fireworks are over you'll have a great place to return to for celebrating. Beats standing in a massive wall of humanity awaiting an empty Underground car. Party here until, oh, around 4 a.m. They're still serving. * Aside from my recommendation that you make The George your home base on NYE the other 364 days would merit a visit as well. Though I'd not call it a sports bar/pub they do have 4 large HD screens broadcasting professional sporting events. It's also a lot more upscale (read: pretty and warm feeling) than your average neighborhood pub. If you decide to test run The George be mindful of getting to the right spot. In a burst of unoriginality, London appears to have a large and growing number of places with the same moniker.

Yelp
This little pub is nice! we did enjoy ourselves here. Now to get one thing out of the way. There are lots of tourists that come here, mostly American and mostly obnoxious. The building is very old and a little rough, but its still cool. The staff is good and knowledgeable. I laughed over and over when the main bar tender had to explain the difference between bourbon, whiskey and scotch to a pretentious American tourist. They also work super hard! serving drinks, bussing tables, taking out orders, and cleaning dishes. Their Gin recipes are awesome! their selection of liquor is great and their beer selection is on point.
google avatar

Yelp
A very traditional pub. One thing I liked here is that they offer a sampler set of the different ales on tap. If you have time, you can try them all in one sitting if your not interested in touring the city. Not sure on the food but it is warm and cozy inside. They do have a section in the back reserved for trivia night. I think there is an upstairs as I saw some people walking up some stairs in the back.

Yelp
You know, in the end it's the little things that make the difference. We stopped in here between museums and we stayed here longer than planned because it was just cool. The afternoon bartender was a pro and made us feel welcomed. I think we looked pretty parched because he offered to get us some water with our pints. One of the older locals was trying to read something at the tables and the bartender brought out a portable light to help the old fella read. Very cool. It was quiet inside but just very comfortable overall. The beers were tasty - I wish I could remember the names and we ended up getting a few after more people came in and the energy level went up. I'd like to try the food next time around because it looked and smelled fantastic.

Yelp
It was raining and we entered by chance in this lovely pub. As a genuine pub it was dark and noisy but very nicely decorated and confortable. We had only drinks but had a nice time there. Try it!

Yelp
A other run if the mill cool pub. I had a pint while heading back to out AirBNB. It was very busy and loud with a lot of business people.
google avatar

Yelp
Visited The George for a comedy event with The Funny Side with the event taking place upstairs. There is a bar downstairs that serves unique types of draft and ale beers and a wine bar upstairs. The comedy show was superb and so were the drinks.

Yelp
This is situated at the beginning of The Strand near The Royal Courts of Justice. It is a chain of Nicholson's pubs. I came here just for a quick coffee after walking back from The Tate Modern, and it was fine.. nothing outlandishly amazing, but Joe average. The staff were pleasant enough, yet it was extremely quiet for a saturday afternoon. I guess it gets busier during the week with workers. They sale real Ale and have a few Quiz Machines,

Yelp
It's alright... It's quite a dark pub, which I guess works well for date nights and gives it a mystery kinda feel. Aside from that though it's quite an overpriced pub. I paid over £6 for a very dry and not particularly good glass of prosecco. As London pubs go, you could live without visiting here.
google avatar

Shawn R.

Yelp
A top notch pub experience. Excellent service and a great menu that goes way beyond standard pub faire. No steak and ale pie here. Lots of great beers to try and the small plate menu is a great place to start. I had the avocado toast with poached egg and chorizo sausage and it was really really good. Put the George on your schedule when visiting London it's a great stop.

Yelp
Came here for a party that was serving Turkey Roast and the food was alright. It wasn't amazing, it wasn't bad. The turkey was kind of plain and bland, the potatoes were good, the gravy was good and the pumpkin pie was amazing. Still wasn't the best I've had, but it hit the spot and I considered myself full. There is an upstairs for dining, which has a small bar as well, and a larger area downstairs for drinking as well as lounging and watching whatever sporting event is on the tele. Will I come back here again? Maybe. I definitely won't be coming out of my way, but it was a good enough place and I enjoyed myself for the most part.
google avatar

Chris F.

Yelp
This is a decent pub on the strand, serving popular food and a decent selection of beers and ales. Does show the football on 1 screen, but the match can be avoided in other parts of the bar. 2 very nice entrances, either via the alley (if you can make it past the other 2 pubs that you will encounter via this route) or the ye olde pubbe lookinge fronte entrance opposite the Royal Courts of Justice. Founded in 1723 apparantly!

Yelp
I love the look of this pub from the outside! Just a little piece of Briton. But again like all my reviews on pubs, their all pretty much the same. Same menus, same types of beer, same atmosphere! Came here with a few mates that were here watching the ruby earlier. I guess it's a good space to watch sport. They have an upstairs area as well as a large downstairs. And as always, i review the bogs. On this evening, they were clean and tidy. And of course, a typical pub wouldn't have bogs on the same floor as the bar, but it helps work off the booze. he he

Yelp
This is one of my favorite pubs in London. The outside and inside are traditional and well-maintained. They have an excellent selection of beer. The staff cab be a bit cool, but with a bit of prodding they open up. There's plenty of room to sit and stand, and there are a selection of bathrooms on two whole different floors! Quite a rarity in London. The crowd is generally having fun, but not out of control. On the downside, it is definitely one of the more expensive pubs for drinking. They claim this is because their craft beers are imported from the US, but I can tell you - as that's my homecountry - this is either a blatant prevarication or a marketing gimmick, as no one I know in the States has ever heard of these beers. That aside though, The George is a fun spot for a relaxed pint and a chat.
google avatar

Patrick F.

Yelp
According to a poster on the wall detailing the history of the pub, it's pretty darn old (1723), but not as old as it looks (apparently faux-history has always been in style). Down the ages the pub has played host to various rakes, scoundrels and dictionary-writers. Nowadays they host a mix of local workers and tourists, and poker players on Tuesday nights. With a range of ales and lagers, food, and friendly service, you can't blame the tourists for popping in after visiting the royal courts of justice across the road, and perhaps lingering. Not a bad choice if you're in the area, but not so full of 'ye olde' charm that it's worth travelling for. One word of warning: I surprised a mouse on the stairs (or vice versa)... so if you have a thing about rodents, perhaps best to stay away.
google avatar

Selina P.

Yelp
This gorgeous little pub saved my wet feet from the rain and I gladly came in. Warmly welcomed by the staff, which always makes me feel comforted, I ordered a glass of red wine and sat down. Not a very warm pub but that's probably because I was drenched in rain but it has a cozy atmosphere. It's dark interior sets you back to the 1800's with the thought of who may have walked in here 100 years ago. There isn't too much to say about this pub as it's simple but it's welcoming if you're walking past and need a little tipple. There aren't a lot of young people (not too surprising), mostly workmen getting a bit of nosh.

Yelp
We happened to schedule a private dining here. What a surprise, the food from appetizers, main course and desserts were some of the best I have had. I would highly recommend and plan to return.
google avatar

Kimberly G.

Yelp
Originally went there for the Pig & Goose that is on the second floor but they were closed. The George had the atmosphere, food and great cider that we ended up there 3 days in a row. Rekorderling cider was the beverage of choice but the meals changed each time. Burger was a dbl patty (not mentioned on menu) that was juicy & full of flavor. Fish & Chips practically filled the whole plate, good flavor with nice batter and the mashed peas tasted fresh. Roast and Ribeye were perfectly cooked. Only item that was "okay" was the Cumberland sausages. Have already recommended this place to family who will be there in a couple of months.
google avatar

Yelp
popped in here after work for a quick drink. it is a typical english pub where you can sit and catch up over a pint. nothing fancy. trying to work out whether the 2 mice running around was a nice addition to the pub
google avatar

Hana V.

Yelp
There's nothing particularly noteworthy about this pub but it has ye olde London charm and is located right near my workplace so can't complain. The food is alright but I'd recommend it more as a place to go for a drink - there are better eateries nearby.
google avatar

Clinton C.

Yelp
The Sausage and Mashed Potatoes filled a lot of emotional holes for me. Exceptional onion gravy!
google avatar

Mark T.

Yelp
Fairly cosy traditionally styled pub opposite the Royal Courts of Justice. There's plenty of seating areas and a good selection of ales available. Staff aren't the friendliest and I saw a young couple asked to leave as they had a baby in a pushchair at 5 o'clock. There's plenty of selection on The Strand so there's a lot of other options available for a drink if you are in the area.
google avatar

Chad C.

Yelp
Great view from across the street from the hall of justice. There was a mouse under our table, not sure if that's just normal in London since we told them and they played it off as their friend. It didn't bother me too much, just thought they'd be more accomodating.
google avatar

Alex D.

Yelp
Standard fare. Useful to know as it's in a central location and it shows the football on two decent TVs. But the Edgar Wallace around the corner has better beers.
google avatar

Hannah S.

Yelp
Decent selection of beers, ales and ciders and a good location. Great if you want to see a traditional British pub in the west end but i wouldn't make a trip specifically to go again. Not much of an outdoor area which is disappointing if the sun is out.

Kathleen H.

Yelp
This was my first pub experience upon moving to London earlier this year, and it certainly met my (stereotypical) expectations of what a proper pub should be. Fish and chips? Check. Beer aplenty? Check. Chicken and leek pot pie? Check. Football (soccer to "ignorant" Americans like me)? Check. British humour? Check. If you are in the area and craving pub grub, it's worth a try. Price-wise, it was middle of the road for what you get. Service was a bit slow but not that noticeable.

Yelp
A typical olde English pub which can be a bit touristy through the day but nice upstairs if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Fleet Street. It is right across the road from The Royal Courts of Justice so if you waited long enough you could see some action but what's also nice about upstairs is the carvery. Our office went there for our Christmas meal and although I no longer eat meat, it did look rather nice and they had loads of veggies to choose from. The pudding was nice too and they made sure we were happy. The only downside was the odd smell of bleach as we went up the stairs but the building is old after all! Worth a visit.
google avatar

Qype User (barnab…)

Yelp
Lovely old pub in a top location. As with most 'old' London pubs, everything feels a little too polished, but nonetheless I believe it is genuinely historic. They do a very drinkable pint in here - it does get quite busy in the evening as it fills up with lawyers, but we managed to get a table in the end.
google avatar

Kevin J.

Yelp
Wow! What a dismal place. The pub looks lovely and olde worlde from the outside and is pretty cavernous within. Lots of wood, a great long bar and not a whole lot of punters. I ordered a pint of London Lager from one of the most sour-faced barmaids that I have ever had the fortune to meet and retired to an alcove to read my book. Two members of staff charged back and forth, up and down the stairs, in and out of the bar like whirling dervishes. It may be that I was struggling to see the hordes of customers pouring in, but the silence said otherwise. I wandered outside avec pint to take some fresh air and was immediately cheered up to listed to barristers and lawyers in general from the local area loudly discussing their clients' cases. What a great mixture mashed legal council broadcasting your secrets and their tactics to all and sundry. Back inside and the crowds still hadn't turned up. I plucked up the courage to approach Mother Theresa for a refill and went back to reading my book. On the plus side, the food that the handfull of tourists were eating looked pretty good. Oh, and the other two bar maids seemed able to smile.

Yelp
A very cosy little pub that nestles in amongst the stunning neo-Gothic spires of the City of Westminster. There's usually a pretty good selection of ales on draught and the prices are pretty standard for Central London. I once tried to watch the rugby here, but the pub is so small that I'd recommend going somewhere larger if the sporting event is a very popular one.

John D.

Yelp
There are a million other pubs like this in London and beyond - old school interior, central location, average food. BUT....not many pubs have the range of real ales that this place has. Ignore the tourists and pop in for a set of three tasters to get you started. Excellent!
