A long-running South End staple reborn with a rooftop patio and live music. Praised by local lifestyle editors for late-night hours and game-day crowds, it keeps the vibe unpretentious and distinctly Queen City.

We came for dinner before seeing a show at Amos. Food was good, nothing too special but was fresh and tasty. Also appreciated them accommodating our large group on a Friday night with no reservation. Also the service was 💯

BEWARE OF SECURITY STAFF!!! Cool place to grab a bite to eat during the day but I don’t recommend coming here when it turns into a night club. I used to love coming here but the bouncers keep letting in phone thieves and nothing has been done. They are 100% in on the crimes here… that have been over 30 reports of stolen items and nothing has been done.

Google
We just had such a great evening at Gin Mill! We stopped in for Happy Hour and they were offering Half Price Appetizers and $5 drink specials with Whiskey. Their food is mouthwatering. The views of the city and sunset were top notch. The music was great and the rooftop was so nice. This is a hidden gem!

Google
CRIMINAL RING AT GIN MILL (boost!) I used to love Gin Mill, honestly. But what’s now happening here is not a fluke, it’s a pattern. For months, reviews have warned of theft, with dozens of phones vanishing in a single evening on separate occasions. 40+ police reports, etc. And what has Gin Mill done? Nothing except for one sign that says a single pickpocketer is on the loose. No security upgrades. No staff intervention. No apparent warnings. Whether it’s indifference or quiet cooperation, their inaction is a loud message: your safety is not their priority. My friend had his phone stolen from his front pocket. Another woman we spoke with lost hers from a zipped purse. These aren’t careless slips—they’re calculated thefts. Before you step inside Gin Mill, ask yourself: is it worth risking a $1,000 loss and a complete violation of your space just for a night out? This place isn’t just careless—it’s complicit. Thanks for nothing, Gin Mill!!

Google
Went here for brunch today and man was I blown away. The food was wonderful! They also had a build your own Moscow Mule bar. One of the first I have ever seen. Gin Mill brings the thunder with the food for sure! Go check it out! The staff was incredibly friendly and super accommodating! I will be back.

Sean Hesano

Google
My phone along with over a dozen others were stolen in a coordinated pickpocketing on Saturday 5-17. When it happened the staff and police couldn’t have possibly cared any less. I understand it happens but look at other reviews- there has been little or zero effort to address this by the bar. In my opinion I am out 1k due to Gin Mill’s negligence in aggressively addressing this issue. If you’re reading this I’m begging you not to go here unless you have zero belongings on you.

Google
Logan is a great bartender and the bouncers are amazing! Drinks are good and affordable. Weekends are busy. Music is good. Food is open until 11pm and is also yum.

Mark James

Google
Great bar food. Pepper jack dip was fantastic and my shrimp wrap was pretty good. I think the components needed to be spread out more evenly across the wrap. My son enjoyed his psycho burger. Fries are crispy and delicious. This is the place to go if you are taking in a concert at Amos' since they give you a 20% discount off your food bill.

Yelp
Caught half of the Steelers game here before heading out of Charlotte, seems like a great spot to catch a game. They had every tv set to a different 1pm game. The bartender took great care of us even as it started to get busy. The fried chicken sandwich was really good and the side salad was a big portion! Big fan of the herb balsamic dressing. They had a great selection of beers to choose from in addition to a full bar.

Yelp
I would recommend this establishment for drinks or music bingo. NOT FOR THE FOOD. The salad I got was half soggy/wilted, they forgot half the toppings and barely any dressing. The bartender even saw me picking through the wilted lettuce and made a comment, but did nothing to fix it? The music bingo is amazing though! 8-1030 on Thursday nights! (I will say that they need better prizes. Nobody wants a hat or koozie)

Yelp
We met up with some friends for dinner before a concert at Amos...and guess I'd say it was a decent bar in the heart of Southend. Although not very big or fancy, the place was well air conditioned, and had a clean sound system. We got this long table, and it got a bit hectic, so I didn't get a long look at the menu. Rather, I ordered the first thing that appealed to me...the Shrimp Wrap, with Pasta Salad. Luckily, the Shrimp Wrap was quite good...and surprisingly spicy! However, I got egg salad instead of the pasta salad. Oh Well. I just took one hasty shot, so the picture isn't that good. For drinks, I tried this Apple Cider...pretty good, but it was delivered in its original can. I noticed that they had a variety of flatbread pizza that I wouldn't mind trying that next time. Definitely not opposed to returning, especially before a concert next door.

Yelp
After the experience I had here yesterday I can't not give Gin Mill a 5 star rating. I always knew of them for their music and late night bar scene but who knew they had killer food? We ate ALOT and let me tell you I would recommend everything we had. The cheese fries and wings were perfection. The flat bread was great. The mill burger was a little under cooked but since awesome. The Italian sandwich was an awesome cold sandwich but I would've liked to have had it hot. Salads are great portions! The beers were crisp and cold which is super important to me--if my beer isn't very cold or flat I'm usually ready to leave lol. Let's talk dessert. The sundae was so fun to share with the table but the ice cream cookie sandwich was the real start of the show. I don't know what they put out into those warm gooey cookies but I they are truly one of kind. I love the price point more than anything. While food and drinks everywhere are so overpriced the gin mill menu is extremely fair and impressively priced compared to other places in Southend. Vibe check 10/10 if you like a nice but somewhat dive bar.

Yelp
If I'm in another city while Michigan State games are happening, I usually try to find an MSU bar or alumni club to connect with. The Spartan community is global and I've always enjoyed being around other alumni for these events, even if I'm away from home. After a quick search, I found out that the Charlotte Spartans were hosting a watch party at Gin Mill South End while Nate and I were unexpectedly in the area. The space was large and bright, with lots of MSU fans and the sound on for the basketball game. Service was friendly and helpful - we got some great recommendations for beers and offered samples to try before deciding. We had recently eaten breakfast but opted for the pretzels as a snack. They came in an order of two and were pretty big! You could definitely split these between at least four people for an appetizer. They were super hot, salty, and the beer cheese and mustard were great accompaniments. The menu was full of delicious sounding items and I'd definitely come back if I'm ever in the area again. There were other fun spots nearby, including the Charlotte Beer Garden which we really enjoyed, so it seemed like a great area to check out.

Yelp
The Gin Mill is really solid. I came here for a show at the Amos (You get 20 percent off at the Gin Mill if you buy tickets for the Amos in advance) and stopped in before the show for the discount. Let's break it down. Good: - Great selection of beer (obviously it's a bar) - Onion Rings were BUSSIN' - Arguably one of the best french fries I've ever had. Definitely a contender - Price is awesome. Everything is fairly priced Bad: - It's LOUD. I know that's not their fault, but I had to yell/couldn't hear my wife from two feet away. - Ketchup with onion rings? I don't know, that's a weird combo for me. - Chicken Sandwich. The chicken tasted a little too "charcoal-y". It had an extreme backyard BBQ taste, which I wasn't too big on. Overall, for the price and quantity here, this place is great. There's just a few things that would turn this into a five out of five. I'd recommend the onion rings (8 bucks and a ton) and skip the grilled chicken sandwich and go with the fried. Someone across from me ordered the fried chicken sandwich and that thing looked huge.

Yelp
Congrats on your new one star ( 3-4-2023). You can tell your kitchen staff thank you. They are very lazy and don't care about business. Nobody is here (it's 2:30) and lunch didn't come out until 330.... Cold and incorrect. When i asked to send it back to make it correct (because i ordered a buffalo chicken wrap) (received the chicken wrap with peppers, cheese, and sauces on the side) When i sent to go back they wouldn't take and and said "kitchen staff was in a bad mood" on top of it my fries were cold like they had been sitting there waiting on the lazy staff to stop sleeping and actually work. NOBODY IS EVEN HERE that kitchen staff is lazy and sad. Good luck keeping business.

Yelp
Waiter only talked to use tree times total and kept saying oh I forgot. Food was cold and all bad. Horrible experience!

Yelp
Good casual vibe. We didn't eat anything but enjoyed beverages on the roof bar. We wanted to go to a rooftop bar but didn't bring the right clothes for another place so this was a great fit!

Yelp
This was my first time coming here and the shrimp was to die for , the sauce was good the atmosphere was nice . We ended up watching a game here and drinking a little I can't remember what drunk I got but I would trust anything they put in front of me .

Yelp
Stopped by here for dinner before a show at amos' and we were seated right away. The waiter was friendly took great care of us. Our drink were brought quickly and our food order was taken. We began with the cheerwine bbq wings, I didn't care for them but my wife really like them. My burger was delicious, as were the tots. The food and drink selection was very good, I'll definitely be back again to try something new.

Yelp
Tons of TVs, live music, food, drinks, what else can you ask for. There is even free street parking not too far away. Stopped in here to watch the NBA rising stars game and have a drink. There is a rooftop which also has a full bar. Multilevel venue with lots of seating. It was really crowded on the night I was there and the crowd seemed like a good tempered crowd. The full band playing live music was good. No cover. Huge beer selection. I think my beer Lagunitas was $6 or $6.50, but I was on vacation and there to watch the game.

Bryan Y.

Yelp
This establishment has poor customer service and do not recommend to others if looking for a good night. (Would give 0 stars if I could)

David T.

Yelp
Came here because we had a 20% discount since we bought tickets for an event at Amos' Southend. We were impressed with the service, top notch, the food quality and the prices. The atmosphere is nice. Looks updated and airy. We will return.

Yelp
Came here for dinner for Charlotte burger week. None of us had ever been here, so we were excited to try it out- especially since we are all huge burger enthusiasts. To start out parking was super confusing. There were a few parking lots but it seemed that none of them were designated for Gin Mill. So it took us a while to find parking, we were not anticipating that. After we eventually found parking, we walked in and were greeted promptly by the hostess. She was awesome, super friendly and came over a few times while we were seated. Service from our waitress, however, was different. We hardly saw her except to order our drinks, food and pay. I didn't get a refill the whole time. I'm very understanding with restaurants and how they are busy, but they weren't busy when we were there. As far as the food, the $6 burger week special was the mill burger (normally $10) it was a decent burger. Was it the best burger I ever had? No. Was it horrible? No. It was over cooked, so it was not juicy (how I like my burgers) and had more char on the outside than I prefer. On the description of the burger it said it had bacon on it, although I didn't taste any bacon, unless it was mixed in with the abundance of pimento cheese on the burger. After we finished eating, I got my waitresses attention to place a Togo order for my boyfriend. I told her I wanted to get him one of the mill burgers as well. So she puts it in then brings out the check and I notice that there is one for $6 on there and one for $10 on there. I asked why it was $10 and she said for the special it is dine in. I politely told her that I wasn't aware of that and if she could please take it off. She said the kitchen had already started cooking it. To which I said, I didn't know it wasn't for $6, had I known that, I wouldn't have ordered that. I would have let my boyfriend pick up food on his own (I didn't want to spend $10 on a burger he was gonna eat an hour later that wasn't going to be hot and not as great). So after a few minutes she finally told me she could give me the special price. But she made it seem like she was doing me a favor. And it just really gave me the bad vibe and tried to make it like I was trying to pull one over. But my thing is if there are 3 people at the table and they all order the special burger and they order 1 Togo and you can't get it for that price Togo, you should probably say something. So because of the parking situation, the overcooked burger, and the waitress I don't think we will be back again.

Yelp
This was my first time at Gin Mill and it was a good experience. The food was good and the atmosphere was nice. Chelsea the bartender was great! Made me feel very comfortable. I can't wait to come back and try more food.

Yelp
We visited Gin Mill as a pre-game before our event. The group ordered a few appetizers and drinks. The prices are very reasonable. We had the calamari, pimento cheese fritters, and wings. The calamari wasn't very good. Too chewy. I'd recommend the fritters and wings. The dry rub and boss sauce were both very good. Overall the Gib Mill has a chill vibe. Good place to have a few drinks.
google avatar

Rosie O.

Yelp
First time visit. I absolutely loved the atmosphere! We came in as a party of 15 demanding woman lol, they handled it like champs! Everyone was so friendly and accommodating! Fritters where so delicious! We even took pictures in the photo booth! I can't wait for the next ladies night out! Would be great for date nights! I think this place is going to be amazing in the warm months as well with the outside seating.

Yelp
Big shout out to Gin Mill for accommodating my office happy hour tonight after another nearby restaurant didn't want patrons standing. Thank you so much, for being more than accommodating.
google avatar

Courtney T.

Yelp
Super cute place. We went straight to the rooftop since that's what grabbed our attention from the street. You get a nice view of the street and can do some good ole ppl watching if you like. The area on the roof has a bar and a couple tables and chairs for a more intimate setting. When we were leaving out we could see the dj setting up for a party so it turns into a club atmosphere after hours on the weekend. The margarita I had was just ok but I would go back to try a different drink. Nice place if you just wanna sit out enjoy the weather and have a drink. They have inside seating of course but I haven't experienced that yet.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
If what you're looking for is a college bar type atmosphere including a large crowd/line with a younger demographic then swing by here Friday or Saturday night. The place will be packed and they will have live music. The food isn't anything to write home about but you could do worse for a sports bar. Plenty of TVs so not a bad place to catch an early game or spend a football Sunday. Overall I think I'm just too much older at this point to enjoy this type of night life but it certainly has its place. Serious about the line though at peak hours it is usually longer than anything I've seen at a Charlotte bar aside from maybe Roxbury.
google avatar

Abby B.

Yelp
My previous review was on the old Gin Mill that was next door. While that use to be the place my friend went every Friday night, I'm not the biggest fan of the new one. I personally cannot speak to the food as I only go on the weekends at night. Personally, I do not think the new Gin Mill lives up to the old one. While I personally think the rooftop is significant better and I very much enjoy hanging out there, if you don't get there early, they won't let you up as they have a cap on people. While this is helpful to keep it from getting too busy, it makes you almost not want to leave the rooftop in fear you won't get back up. Eliminates the possibility of walking around the place or meeting up with friends on the rooftop. While this is still a fun place, it is not the place I use to know and love.

Kiara K.

Yelp
These fried pickles are the saltiest things you'd ever eat .... I would rather swallow salt water from the ocean as a shark bites my ass. At least tomorrow I'll belong in the ocean with the rest of the blow fish.
google avatar

Ana R.

Yelp
This was my first visit so I wasn't sure what to expect. The inside is nice with great size TVs to possibly view a sporting event. Yhey have a. Ice quant rooftop with a nice city view. I visited before 11 so it wasn't crowded. After leaving and walking back by after 11 this clearly was the place to be with a line our the door. The rooftop bar has a full shelf. I ordered a Margarita. I wouldve preferred salt on the rim and just a tad more liquor. I would possibly visit again.

Lauren H.

Yelp
DO NOT COME HERE. A bouncer put his hands on myself (a female) and my friend who is also a female. When confronted by our guy friend who nicely asked the bouncer to not touch us he got in his face, shoved him and then proceeded to shove our friend down the stairs that lead from the roof. When at the bottom of the stairs he shoved him again into the brick wall. This is not the first review of the bouncers being aggressive.

Yelp
I came to Gin Mill on a Saturday evening. I was so impressed by their new location! The new space has a sleek and inviting design, and they have an awesome outdoor space. The layout of the Gin Mill is so well thought out - they have placed the bar, dance area, tables, and restrooms in a way that flows very well. The DJ was rocking, and they had the windows open to let the spring, air inside. Customers are mostly 22-30 range in age, and dressed casually (jeans to dresses are fine). This place is well located in South End, and is a great place to spend a fun night out. Bar prices are reasonable, and they don't have a cover!

Katie M.

Yelp
Bartender begged me for money after I paid my tab and would not let it rest until I gave her a $5 bill

Matthew L.

Yelp
Solid place! Solid food! Awesome beer / drink specials. Awesome inside and the roof is great for a drink outside!
google avatar

Rodric L.

Yelp
If you had visited the "old" Gin Mill down the street, you're missing out if you haven't given the new place a try. New menu. In house chef (not from the bar next door) and a far better line up. They are also taking suggestions and continuing to tweak the menu to improve since reopening which is great to see. Same great service from Holly and Stephen. Only downside is that it can get EXTREMELY busy on the weekends now, where before you were almost always guaranteed a spot at the bar. But kudos to them for the success. The wings are, now, some of the best in Charlotte. The flatbreads are on point. Even the pickle appetizer is good!
google avatar

Bruce K.

Yelp
One of the stops on the Light Rail Bar Crawl, I felt that the Gin Mill was the most "dive-y" with a lot of dented chrome and scarred wood a bathroom that needed a flamethrower and some seriously loud music. I sat at the bar with my beer and watched the young-uns dancing to the DJ's tunes on the "stage". This vantage point gave me a great opportunity to see the bartenders in operation. Fast, efficient and friendly. Picking up abandoned empties and serving out drinks quickly. Impressive. Bouncer at the door checking ID's. Taxi stand outside ready to take the wobbly folks home, but I was good. It's a very short walk to the Light Rail station that gave me time to sober up (I only had four drinks over five hours) while riding back to my parked car.
google avatar

Julia M.

Yelp
Echoing Becky's experience, I too have found myself sharing popcorn with total strangers after having a few adult beverages, but c'est la vie - it's all good! The Gin Mill is a fun bar with lots of friendly staff. I've seen some pretty good local musicians play here and definitely have played my share of shuffleboard and foosball. They used to do trivia here during the week - can't remember which night though. The cool little deck gets really crowded on game-days and sometimes on weekends as well. It can be tough to get a drink up there, but no matter, just grab one from the friendly bartenders downstairs before you head up. If you are looking for a cool little unpretentious watering-hole, you should give it a try.
google avatar

Benjamin G.

Yelp
Definitely not what I was expecting for a first visit, but its definitely a decent South End bar. Plenty to do, plenty of places to chill, and TONS of booze/beer behind the bar. I really dig the giant tables with old church pews near where they put the bands. Really dig that they have darts and some other video games, too. The only part that freaks me out, like many other spots in town, is the parking situation. Just a little scary and not sure "where" to leave the car. Ya know? It's a great spot and the beer is cold. I'll definitely come back.

Chris C.

Yelp
Bands are horrible here! Why do you guys keep getting shi* bands? DJ every time I come is way better. Just face it most local bands suc*, you'll lose customers.
google avatar

Evan G.

Yelp
This is my first time in Gin Mill and we only came for drinks and appetizers. From what I've been told the place has been completely remodeled, and it shows. The nice big bar is very welcoming and there is a very large and open dining area. I was impressed with the drink menu and the food menu, the appetizers we got were really good
google avatar

Abby L.

Yelp
I am a little partial to this place due to fond memories. So my review my be biased. There is an upstairs patio outside and a downstairs near the bar. I prefer the upstairs and the view. It is really nice to sit outside and have a drink on a summer, spring, or fall evening. The service is ok. Some of the staff is a little rude at times. There is an area to play games inside which is cool. It doesn't get too crowded and you don't have to wait too long for your turn to play. Drink specials on various nights. Check them out!!
google avatar

Peyton J.

Yelp
Fun bar to get drinks with friends. Not sure how they are operating with covid. It was always packed before the pandemic so we haven't been back since April.

Yelp
Amazing service, we ordered food customized and it was perfect, we've been there multiple times and awesome service, the food and drinks are so good

Yelp
Rude, aggressive, black, big and fat bouncer kicked me out of the bar because I got into a heated argument with a guy (Me telling the guy "F you"; no fight had started yet) who was pushing me away with his elbow when I had finished chit chatting to a group of girls (one of them had her birthday whom I wished happy bday because my bday was on the day before). In-spite of me not resisting to leave and making my way towards the exit, this bouncer kept pushing me repeatedly. Then he snatched the beer can from my hand which cut my finger with blood all over my hand (He did not ask me to drop the beer or say that that you cannot down it). I did not see the other (white) guy getting kicked out of the bar. Racist vibes.
google avatar

Richard R.

Yelp
Perfect place to grab a quick happy hour beer or a night out! Kat and Morgan are awesome!! This place is always a blast and the bartenders couldn't be more willing to laugh and chat!
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Just wanted to do an update on my previous review. Unfortunately the rooftop bar has been closed so it isn't as convenient to go up there... It requires lots of trips up and down, but it's still rather chill to be up there. Corn hole, tables and chairs and a nice view still make it a nice hang out spot. Good thing the downstairs has not changed much. Plenty to do with darts, foosbal table, bar, complementary popcorn!, shuffle board table (actually one that works!). There was a live band playing that Saturday night and they really rocked it. Since I am getting older, I do appreciate less bar craziness and different types of entertainment (other than getting ridiculously drunk). I guess i spent my 20somethings doing the majority of that and my liver always reminds me that i cannot do that anymore. The Gin Mill offers a place with more substance and quality crowd (even tho we are older! There's totally nothing wrong with that).

Yelp
Gin Mill is located in one of my favorite areas of Charlotte - South End! A mix of bars, clubs, and restaurants that is just minutes from the Epicenter but filled with young millennials looking for great food and fun. Walking into Gin Mill, you'll see a mix of high top tables, booths, and bar stools surrounding simple and spacious all wood designs. I came in with friends for brunch on the a Sunday of CIAA. We were starving from a long night of fun and looking for a great meal for a great price. The brunch menu is simple but has a little something for everyone- only missing something sweet like French toast or pancakes. I got the ham and cheese omelette with fries, and other in my group got things ranging from salad, wings, to shrimp and grits. My omelette was filled to the brim with great ingredients - fresh peppers, onions, ham, very cheesy, etc. During my time the kitchen was really backed up causing us to get our food pretty late, but Matt the manager, explained everything to us and truly put us first with any problems we had, which we truly appreciated. The staff handled the situation with the back-up of the kitchen great and I would definitely return, but if they could get mimosas down to 1/2$ a glass or bottles of champagne/carafes to 15/16$ i would give 5 stars!

John S.

Yelp
Got asked to leave this bar last night for seemingly no reason. When asking why I had to leave, no answer was given. I was grabbed by a bouncer and when I resisted being tugged out of the bar like a toddler, I was thrown to the ground and punched in the face without ever being aggressive from my end. A police report has already been filed and they will be hearing from my lawyer as soon as the weekend is over. Please do yourself a favor and avoid this place while you still can. Can't wait to view the security footage after the police get a warrant for it.

Yelp
The new Gin Mill is back open! For those of you who remember the good old Gin Mill, the new one is right next door. New & revised! They did a nice job with the looks of the place. Still has darts, shuffle board, and maybe 3 arcade games. No specials, went on a Friday evening. Paid $6.50 for draft beer. We had fun here, good crowd. The word is out, they are back open! Soft open happened on Wednesday January 10th!

Sandra M.

Yelp
It was my first time there a week or so back and I went for a business gathering. The meal that I had was not ordered by me, but I did get a good idea of what it was about. The service was good, but they did not have fresh brewed tea for us and we were the only ones there I had to wait for quite some time and had only a short amount of time for our lunch break. The meal ordered was fish tacos, caprese flatbread, a salad and some tortillas. The fish was tasteless to me and the flatbread while it was tasty it was very burnt and over done. The salad was tasty and plentiful. I felt that the service for a group of our size about 10 people was just not up to standards and with us being the only ones there could have been much better. It looks like a cool spot they had darts and games, plenty of TV's and a lot of seating. There was some parking onsite, but mostly on the street like many places in the city. I would recommend it and would consider giving it another try, but not going to rush out there.

Yelp
Their new spot in south end is pretty awesome. Been there a few times for food/snacks, foods great! Also live music on the weekends, one Saturday night I was in it was a bunch of awesome '90s covers.
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
I have been to Gin Mill many times over the years. Just a small dive bar. They usually have live music and the upstairs roof is an excellent spot to hang out. There are drink specials every night. They have a ton of dart boards....Gin Mill is actually our go to place for darts as there are plenty of boards and rarely ever filled. They also have a table top shuffle board (I believe it costs $1). Casual atmosphere with a large variety of people and ages as patrons. Pro Tip- Free popcorn

Yelp
Has a very college-y feel, so if that's what you're looking for it's a good spot. Lots of country music, played by both the live band and in between sets. Space is fairly packed, but not much dancing because of the music. Drink prices are standard.

Yelp
Great for drinks after work or date night. The bartenders are friendly and really know how improvise if you have a particular taste in mind. Me and my friends have made this our regular spot for Thursday. Great crowns and all around good vibes.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to watch a sports game and enjoy the rooftop bar. Great staff and always enjoy seeing Brad behind the bar!
